Hello, friends!

Welcome to a new membership year—and another opportunity for Girl Scouts to connect, explore, and unleash their limitless potential. Lately, I’ve been reflecting a lot on what it means to belong. Finding belonging is central to the Girl Scout experience, and it’s a sentiment we all take to heart. When Girl Scouts feel welcomed, valued, and accepted, their confidence soars and they discover they can achieve anything.

One of our signature programs that exemplifies belonging is our camp programming. At Girl Scout camp, future leaders come into their own in spaces where they feel safety, community, and belonging. Girl Scout campers take risks, harness their strengths, and become stronger—physically, mentally, and emotionally. In doing so, they strengthen their connection with fellow campers, with their bodies, and with our beautiful land.

This is where their leadership skills begin to develop and shine.

Yet generations of girls and gender-expansive youth have missed out on the opportunity to experience the magic of camp due to racist and misogynistic exclusion to the outdoors. We continually strive to ensure that every Girl Scout who wants to experience camp has the opportunity to do so.

Since I joined Girl Scouts of Western Washington, we’ve launched Umoja Day and Weekend Overnight Family Camp programs, designed for Black, African-American, and multi-cultural families to enjoy camp and all its benefits. We also created an annual LGBTQIA+ overnight camp experience. I love that this program embodies everything Girl Scouts is about. Courage. Confidence. Character. All the things that help our youth grow up to be incredible humans.

Additionally, we’re excited to welcome Girl Scouts from across the country next summer for a Pacific Northwest Adventure Destination where they will spend 12 days at our primitive Camp Towhee in the shadows of Mt.
I will never forget the commitment that GSBB showed us during some of the toughest years of our life and even beyond those gates. The commitment to bring Shelby in once a month, the awesome sleepover slumber party they put on yearly, the commitment even outside of the walls, the camps and field trips. I am forever grateful. Thank you, Cheryl, Ani, the rest, of the GSBB team, and our Girl Scout community; your commitment is very much appreciated and helps change lives.”

“During the weekend of May 19-21, Girl Scouts of Western Washington had the privilege of hosting over 100 people with Black/African American identifying family members at Camp River Ranch! This amazing opportunity was our inaugural Umoja Family Camp! Attendees participated in the traditional camp activities (tie-dye, archery, canoeing, etc.), a super fun toddler area equipped with water tables, coloring, and various outdoor play activities for families, and experienced a theatre program put on by Beyond the Stage Youth. We are excited for next year and years to come!”

Ayrion Shields, Community Development Manager
Africa Diaspora Employee Resource Group Member

Check out a behind the scenes recounting of one of our signature aviation programs, Girl Scout discovery flights!

Girl Scouts’ history of aviation goes all the way back to 1913 when the Flyer badge was introduced just one year after founding the organization. The Wing Scout program was developed in 1941 for Senior Girl Scouts who were interested in flying and aviation and wanted to serve their country or pursue a career in aviation. Like our current WING Girl Scout Squadron (WINGGSS), the original Wing Girl Scouts designed their own uniforms.

Today, we offer over 25 different aviation and space science programs for all age levels. She would always come in, and the entire company bought [Girl Scout] Cookies. He came up to me when I first started working here and asked if there was a way to get the Girl Scouts flying. We rallied the troops, got a bunch of volunteers, and got some airplanes donated. Everyone donated their time, and I convinced Avian to donate the equipment for the flights so we could provide the experience for a minimal fee that essentially just covered fuel. At our first Discovery Flight Day, we had 24 Girl Scouts. I am so excited to see it grow into what it has become today. Most people don’t realize that every airline pilot, every Navy pilot, every pilot out there started in a small plane like this. So it’s very cool for Girl Scouts to take these first steps and follow in those footsteps.

Safety is always our number one concern. We teach them how to preflight the aircraft and make sure it’s in tip top shape. Unlike cars, we can’t just pull over to the side of the road if something goes wrong, so we want to make sure that everything’s safe. We get them buckled in. They get to sit in the left seat and actually take the controls. We teach them how to steer the aircraft on the ground—a lot of people don’t realize you steer with your feet. We teach them how to take off and climb, then we’ll level off if we can, go to a local airport, and land there.

Today’s flight was from Bremerton to Tacoma Narrows, which is a towered airport, so they got to hear and see a tower, then fly back. Along the way, they learn how the flight controls work: what the ailerons, elevator, and rudder all do. More than that gets overwhelming for people, but if they want to learn more about that, they can. And if they decide that they want to pursue aviation, we have a student orientation. We sit down, go over goals, and create a pathway to achieving those goals. Every Girl Scout here gets a logbook with their very first flight logged in it—or second flight for some of them. Every hour that they log counts toward their total flight experience.

Leilah: The first time I flew, it was like seeing the world from a whole different view. It was amazing. And I just fell in love with it. I love aviation, but my favorite thing is flying. This is my second year doing the program and it’s made one of my dreams come true of actually getting to fly. I love all the opportunities I’ve gotten from this. It’s amazing.

Qiji-li: Flying was fun and exhilarating, I felt like I could have spent a few more hours up there. Flying in a tiny plane, and in the cockpit, no less, was very different from flying as a passenger in a commercial plane. It was an experience that I will never forget. I also really enjoy my WING Squadron opportunities to listen and talk to subject matter experts in the aviation industry every month. Getting special access to aviation events like Seafair Weekend and Alaska Airlines Aviation Day is a big plus, too!

Even with the discovery flights we like to show them our airframe shop and our engine shop—the number of female airplane mechanics is extremely low. It’s important to show them the possibilities.

We’ve done a lot of Boy Scout adventures, but it was very, very rewarding to have the Girl Scouts come in and want to participate. It’s been amazing to see the program grow and gain support over the years, and now it’s fully funded. It’s really, really nice to see. Avian is committed to the Girl Scouts. Leading this company, we’ve had a lot more girls and women participate in the aviation program. Hopefully they’ll continue to discover the world around them, even from 500 feet.

Qiji-li: I think it’s important for girls to have access to aviation programs because most of the aviation field still mainly consists of men. Girl Scout aviation programs help to make more women in the aviation field a reality.

Leilah: Aviation is something that I’m passionate about. My mom signed me up for the WING Girl Scout program. I’ve always had an interest in planes and engines and stuff like that, so when she offered me the opportunity, I was thrilled to be a part of WINGGSS. I feel it’s important because women are often underrepresented in this field. Girl Scouts offers us the ability to learn and explore the field of aviation.

In the WING Squadron, we get to hear from guest speakers and see presentations from actual women in the field of aviation. I’ve learned a lot from them, and I’m so glad I got to meet a lot of them. I hope to one day have a female mentor.

Why Girl Scouts?

I joined Girl Scouts in third grade. At the time, I lived in a small town in Oregon and there were not many people my own age to play with. I thought it was a good way to get out of the house and make friends. I really liked being able to give back to the community, and I loved the camps and the activities. When I moved to Washington at the beginning of sixth grade, Girl Scouts was still an easy way to get to know people. I’ve made a lot of friends through Girl Scouts, and troop meetings and activities are a good way to consistently see them and hang out with them.

Becoming a Leader

When I was younger, I went to Girl Scout camps in Oregon. I thought the camp counselors were really cool and I looked up to them a lot. When I was old enough, I became a program aide (PA) and found it a lot of fun. The first year I was a PA, a lot of younger Girl Scouts told me they looked up to me. I just remember thinking that I had those same thoughts about my camp counselors, and it made me really happy to see that I was influencing younger girls in that same positive way. I’m so honored to be someone they can look up to, talk to, and strive to grow into as they go through their Girl Scout journey.

Now, as the oldest member of a multi-level troop, I have constant opportunities to lead and look after the younger Girl Scouts. In meetings, I help out the troop leader, guide younger Girl Scouts through examples, jump in and encourage them to try new things, and make sure they’re being safe. It feels less like a club and more like one big family because we try to do most things together and work on badges that are similarly themed. Since I’m the youngest girl in my family, Girl Scouts provides a way for me to play an older sibling role and be a leader. I think of all my younger troop mates as my little Girl Scout sisters. It’s important to me to give back, show them how to be good Girl Scouts, and be a torchbearer who keeps them motivated to evolve into leaders—like I have done.

Proud to be a Girl Scout

Even beyond my troop and local camps, Girl Scouts has given me opportunities to lead, travel, and do things I’m proud of. During the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, I earned my Silver Award by creating a tech-inspired superhero comic book warning kids about too much screen time. I’m excited to start working on my Gold Award soon. I don’t know how many badges I’ve earned, but I did just buy a new sash to put my badges on since I ran out of room on my vest.

Last summer, I was able to go to Europe with a neighboring Girl Scout troop. We visited two Girl Scout Centers, Our Chalet and Pax Lodge, where we learned about the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), and international friendship, and how Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the globe positively impact their communities. I also participated in the Climate Summit for three years, learning about how we all can make a difference to save the earth.

I have also been a top cookie seller repeatedly during the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program. I like to use booth sales as time to educate the public about how older Girl Scouts are the glue that keeps programs running for younger members. This year, I also got to share about my badgework, cookie success, and Girl Scout leadership in an interview on New Day Northwest alongside Andrea Anderson, our council’s CEO. That was definitely a super highlight!

Thanks to the generosity of the Girl Scout donor community, Lara was actually able to go to camp sessions at both Camp Robbinswold and Camp River Ranch. I don’t know how we got picked for an extra week of camp; I was just very grateful.

The financial aid experience with Girl Scouts has always been very accessible and dignified. I’ve never felt like we’re having to provide a lot of information or put ourselves in a potentially embarrassing situation. It’s just very direct. “Will your child benefit from this? Can we make it easier and more accessible for you? Then here it is.” It’s now part of my personal Girl Scout mission as an adult participant to help people understand how accessible it is.

It was great to have a full regular school year plus summer experiences. When we first joined Girl Scouts, we were really, really looking forward to camp, but then it just wasn’t an option, partly because of COVID-19 and partly because of Lara’s age. Finally being able to go made it feel like Lara had a whole, good second-grade year, especially ending with something
exciting to look forward to during the summer.

Lara: I went to art camp and mermaid camp last year. At art camp, we made fairy houses in the woods. I went together with my friend, Petra. It wasn’t my first time away from my mom and dad. I’ve stayed with my grandparents. But it was my first time going to an overnight camp. I was nervous that I wouldn’t make any friends besides Petra. But we did.

At mermaid camp there was a tank with lots of fishes and stuff. We got to touch the crabs and starfish and learn about them. There was a starfish named Bobby. Some of the other fish had names, but not all of them. The counselor let me and my friend name one of them. We went to the beach with lots of rocks and found tiny crabs underneath that we got to pick up and hold. We also did a special badge with our counselor, Huckleberry.

Veronica: As part of her Gold Award, Huckleberry was finishing up marine biology educational programming. She created ways for the campers to learn about whales, including experiments demonstrating how whale teeth, baleen, and blubber work.

Mermaid camp was a hit for a lot of different reasons. Lara didn’t swim as much as we thought they would—they’re usually all about going in the water, but it ended up being too cold. They did a lot of learning, boating, and dock surfing. Lara has still slowed down a bit on swimming, but I’ve noticed they’re much more adventurous in general. When we go outside, like to a
park or field, they go farther away from us and climb trees, which isn’t something they used to do. Whenever Lara’s around friends with similar interests, they’re even more adventurous. It was really good for them to be in a place like camp with like-minded kids, adventuring and testing their limits together.

Lara: At mermaid camp, I got scared. We were in kiwi kayaks that only fit one person. I got nervous when there were waves, and I was nervous about orca whales. A friend I made there got scared because her boat felt tippy. I helped her be less scared, which felt good. I feel much braver after going to camp.

Veronica: We sent Lara to camp with pre-addressed envelopes and stamps so when they had downtime, Lara could just write a card and send it off. It was really funny because Lara came home and the next day, their letter arrived. It was so cute because Lara was telling us how much fun they had and how they couldn’t wait to go to camp again, but in the card they
were saying how they were scared and going to miss us. It was really nice to be able to show that back to Lara and be like, “Look, you had so much fun! You didn’t have to be scared.” It was an awesome opportunity for them to just be themself.

We’re trying to send Lara to camp again this year. It’s part of their cookie goal, so that’s what they’ve been leading with when people ask how they’ll use the money. Hopefully, Lara can do the Water Crazy unit, and they’ve said they want to bring mermaid tattoos this time. I’m hoping there
will be more kids from our troop going to Girl Scout camp, too, now that we’ve got a good endorsement and felt so comfortable and confident with everything Lara experienced.

Lara: I want all my friends to be able to go to camp. It’s fun, and I want to go together. Camp is more fun than school. We get to do lots of activities. Next time I want to try making food at camp.

Veronica: The Seattle area and the Western Washington area have a lot of transplants. We came from a completely different climate. As much as we try to get the kids to go and enjoy being outside, camp brings it to another level—they can’t avoid nature when they’re playing, sleeping, and living in it for a week. At camp, Lara gets so much more knowledge about where we live and the diversity of plants and species. I think it’s really important for kids to have that, especially if they’re newer to the area.

Camp is really practical, too. As a working parent, your kids need something to do in the summer, and a lot of close-to-home group care is just about having a safe place to be. At camp, they’re learning life skills, making friendships, creating their own memories and traditions. I think it’s a really awesome opportunity to provide a place for your kids to go and have a really enriching experience.

Hey, Girl Scouts!

I am so honored and humbled to be at Girl Scouts of Western Washington. This month marks my one-year anniversary at this remarkable organization. In that time, I have learned so much about the transformative experience we provide for the young people we are so lucky to serve. Our work could not be possible without the outpouring of generosity from all our donors, the tireless dedication of our volunteers, the unwavering commitment of the staff and board, and finally the spirit, creativity, leadership, resilience, and absolute brilliance of the young people themselves.

I am amazed by all of you and your dedication to ensuring that Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges.

Many of you have asked about my vision for the future, and from the beginning I have said that I could not develop a strategic vision for Girl Scouts of Western Washington without you. I want to personally thank everyone who has carved out time to meet with me, participated in focus groups and surveys, or emailed me directly. Your collective wisdom, lived experiences, and deepest desires for the future of Girl Scouts will be the foundation for the strategic work our team will do at Macy* in May. I promise to bring this shared vision back to you in October so we all have a clear path to advance the incredible mission of Girl Scouts.

This winter, I had the privilege of championing the efforts of local Girl Scout Cookie sellers taking part in one of the largest youth-led and the largest girl-led entrepreneurial program in the world. In my first cookie season as CEO, I was blown away by the creativity, growth, and commitment of our youth and volunteers alike. And I was lucky enough to see many local cookie sellers in action!

This year, an astonishing 74 Girl Scouts sold over 2,000 packages each! Additionally, over 1,500 Girl Scouts demonstrated their digital storytelling expertise by creating their own cookie commercial and uploading it to their digital storefront. While these stats are undeniably impressive, numbers don’t begin to explain the confidence, critical thinking, teamwork, and entrepreneurial savvy that Girl Scouts develop through the cookie program. These tangible business skills, particularly the real-world experiences Girl Scouts gain in digital marketing and online sales, will help local youth grow into visionary leaders in an increasingly digital business world.

Thank you for your partnership as we support the next generation in making the world a better place. From camping trips to international travel, from taking flight to making change, you make it all possible. We couldn’t do any of this without you.

With gratitude,
