1 // Pick out a killer outfit the night before

No girl likes to rush in the morning -  it can result in throwing together an outfit that you end up hating for the rest of the day (yikes!). Luckily, that regret can be easily prevented: Pick out an outfit the night before that’ll make you feel beautiful from dawn to dusk. Might we suggest some animal print? 2 // Wear sexy sleepwear

One of the best recipes for waking up feeling beautiful is - you guessed it - going to bed feeling beautiful. 8 // Have an earlier dinner

Going to bed feeling bloated is never fun, and having dinner at 9:00 PM is no way to fight that. 10 // Treat your lips

Forget someone’s name? Use your friend as bait

1. All your shoes are scuffed or dirty

There’s nothing quite like a new pair of shoes to make you feel your best! Similarly, there’s nothing like a dirty or scuffed pair to make you feel your worst.

Warning sign number one is glaringly obvious: if all your shoes are scuffed or dirty, it’s time to go shoe-shopping!

2.  Somehow your shoes are a size too big

Over time, shoes tend to conform to the shape of our feet and then stretch out as we wear them. So if you find that your shoes are mysteriously a size too big for your feet, you know it’s time for a new pair.

(And if you've had babies, shoes may have become too small!)

3.  You don't own any black flip flops

Take a peek in your closet and report back: do you have at least one pair of nice black flip flops? If your answer is no, then you know this is a huge warning sign that you’re in need of  a shoe makeover.

4.  Your shoes are interestingly noisy

Heels are wonderful; but worn out heel tips are terribly noisy! If the endearing click of your stiletto heels has transformed to an annoying clunk, you have two choices: you can spend money on getting your heels repaired or you can just opt for a total shoe makeover. We’ll let you decide!

5.  You've gone three seasons without buying new shoes

Shoe trends are ever-changing, and while most shoes can get you through several seasons before they start to show signs of wear-and-tear, it’s ideal to always have one or two fresh, trendy pairs in your wardrobe at all time. If you’ve gone three seasons without buying at least one pair of new shoes, we think it’s time for a makeover.

6.   Your shoes don't offer support

As in shoes outgrowing your foot size over time, the same can happen with the arch or the insole of your shoes – over time, the support tends to wear out. If you find your shoes to be mysteriously uncomfortable, this could be a sign that your shoes aren’t offering enough support anymore, which means you definitely need a shoe makeover!

7. Your beach flip flops don't sparkle enough

It can be difficult to really stand out and feel/look your best during the summer with boring rubber flip flops. What about closer to home? How often are you (and I) guilty of gossip about people we supposedly care for?

For example, you were upset, you said some things you shouldn’t have, and your best girlfriend caught wind of the gossip and now refuses to talk to you. You’ve been in fights with others over your lifetime, but this one you surely don’t know how to handle.

Don’t fret: here are three ways to repair a relationship when your friend hears you gossip about her.

     1.  Be Honest

You’ve been caught red-handed doing something very bad, but the worst thing you can do in this terrible situation is be dishonest and try to cover up the mess with lies. Instead swallow your pride and fess-up, darling.

But be sure to let your girlfriend know how sorry you are, which definitely involves the words “I’m sorry,” maybe more than once, but don't end it there. Tell her why you were gossiping in the first place and explain what, exactly, had upset you that had caused the "friend crime." 

     2.  Don't stop trying

Chances are your friend isn’t going to forgive you right away. But remain calm: if this friendship has good roots, she will forgive you eventually. She may just want to see you suffer a bit first (which you surely deserve).

Take this cold-shoulder, silent-treatment period as an opportunity to show your friend just how much you care about your relationship.

Call, text, email, write. Don't give up. If you need some friend-forgiveness inspiration, think Miranda and Carrie’s breakup in Sex and the City Movie 1. Be Miranda, and yes, wait in the cab “17 dollars long” if need be.

     3.  Come bearing gifts

If you can’t get through to your wounded girlfriend with your frequent attempts at communication, it may be time to show up on her doorstep bearing gifts. A bouquet of flowers, a bottle of her favourite lotion, a BIG sorry note, and perhaps some additional goodies you know are her favourite treats - chocolates? champagne? jewelry or shoes?

She might just crack up laughing with these black flip flops  when she reads the quote on the insole – “I believe in hard labor, my fingers lift precious rocks all day” – which will only help your forgiveness cause.

Undertake this period of forgiveness and perhaps you'll be even better friends before you know it. We know you’re a good friend at heart, and surely you’ve learned your lesson.

Preparing for the First Dance

Focusing on What's Truly Important

I did not love my wedding shoes. I chose ones that were inexpensive, matched the dress, and were relatively comfortable. But they were completely forgettable and ugly in any context other than being worn with my awesome dress. I wish I had gone with shoes that were funkier and more fun. I could have loved wearing them long after the wedding and been reminded of how awesome that day was every time I put them on my feet. -Erin W.

I had super fabulous, stroppy, high heels with an ankle flower. My dress was short so the shoes mattered! I remember standing at the top of the aisle, waiting to walk down to my husband and thought, uh oh, it's been 30 minutes and my feet hurt! Today’s G-list girlfriend interview is with Leah Goard, my go-to business and life strategist who continually coaxes, challenges and holds the space for me to thrive and become my very best self. She's a girlfriend at the top of my speed dial list! I first met Leah at an event in San Diego six years ago when in a crowd of a thousand, we sat next to each other and immediately hit it off. Leah has been a serial entrepreneur for over 20 years, owning businesses in Australia, England, Japan and Canada in health and wellness, marketing, import/export and education. 

Today, she is wildly fascinated by what makes us groove. She is in hot pursuit of the multi-layered answer to the question: What does it mean, and what does it take to truly thrive in our life?

I asked Leah some fun questions: 

1. Tell us about a favourite ritual.

My current morning ritual includes: journaling, oil pulling, hot water and lemon, matcha tea, 10 minutes of yoga, quality time with my son before he leaves for school then I throw the ball for my dog or head to the beach with him, work out (Pilates, running or weight training), down a Vega Shake and sit down to work. I know it sounds like a lot to jam into a morning but I don’t do it all every morning – based on how I’m feeling and my work schedule. It’s all about getting into a rhythm and setting yourself up so it’s easy. 2. Perfect activity with girlfriends?

Last year, I made a decision to really focus on nourishing my relationships with my close girlfriends. Life gets so full that it’s really easy to let them go and pretty quickly you realize that you’ve lost a whole level of connection and fun in your life. Life happens in the moments in between running the kids to soccer, cooking dinner and launching new products. I just don't get twisted up about throwing a big fancy shin digs (although that can be fun too – just not for those of us who missed the Martha Stewart gene)!

Instead I focus more on the small ways that I can reach out to connect and have fun on a daily basis. I am often sending notes, photos and sharing inside jokes or funny videos.  And when I do get together with girlfriends: we go for a hike, plant in the garden together, go out for a simple dinner or find something different to do together.

3. Secret vice?

I’m in better shape now at 42 than I was in my twenties (as a personal fitness trainer) and at the core of that is Pilates on my reformer. And switching from coffee to Matcha tea a couple of years ago made a huge difference in my skin, energy and moods!

Vices – oh so many but my staple vice…amazing chocolate, my favourite is La Petite Souris.

4. How would you describe your style?

Simple, casual and a little edgy. Black, white, grey and browns make up most of my closet. Jeans and t-shirts, sexy flip flops or a great pair of boots.

6. What is something fun in your business that you're working on right now?

I’ve just relaunched my new website which I am super stoked about. 7. What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?

Honestly, I don’t know that I really believe in failure. Failure is about our relationship to what didn’t work and the reality is that if you want to create an amazing life then you need to take risks. And if you live outside your comfort zone, chances are things aren’t going to go how you might have wanted them to all the time – but this isn’t failure – this is (as a good girlfriend of mine would say) just another f***ing growth opportunity!

Every time I have “failed”, something greater was waiting for me on the other side. So, I keep challenging the stories of what I believe to be possible – every single day - and keep on moving forward. Two steps forward, one step back… I like to think of it like the Cha Cha.

If she's a foodie, take a baking or cooking class together to learn ethnic dishes, fusion dishes and the latest techniques. The benefit? Mom learns something new and you get a fuller stomach when she brings you her latest signature dishes. Yum.

Go see the latest movie or rent a stack of chickflick classics from Barefoot in the Park to Sleepless in Seattle, the Notebook to Bridesmaids. Add popcorn, wine, blankets and a cozy couch and you're all set for a girls night in.

22. Teach her online skills

Whether it's installing some apps on her phone like Skype or Viber that help you stay connected, or helping her set up a social media profile, Mom will appreciate being able to keep track of your life updates more easily.  Help Mom use technology to bring you closer.

23. Plan a mother-daughter weekend

Pack your bags and extend the celebration to a weekend away. It's just long enough to really connect and have fun, and short enough to avoid any arguments :-)

29. Take her car to get serviced

It can be a big gift like a set of new tires, or a service check up like an oil change, or even just a car wash and detail. This gift tells mom you care about her safety on the road.

30. Introduce Mom to the benefits of Juicing

My lovely mother-in-law gave us an Omega juicer over a year ago and it has changed our lives. At least once a week we make a batch of juices and add it to our diet. The Green Juice (kale, celery, cucumber, apple, lemon and ginger) is our favourite, followed closely by a very simple grapefruit and sweet potato concoction (it's a great breakfast drink). We feel healthier and noticed we haven't been as susceptible to illness, or seem to recover more quickly. Make it easy for Mom to stay healthy by giving her the right tools. 

31. Give a gift that arrives more than once

Subscription services are the gift that keeps on giving! Every week or every month whether it's a magazine, a fresh food box, a wine of the month club, whatever tickles Mom's fancy - she'll thank you and think of you every time her surprise comes in the mail.

32. Ask her about you

Do you know the story of when you were born? What you were like at 2, 5, 10 or 15. What are some of your mom's favourite memories about you? Only Mom can give you this insight and history.

33. Get to know your Mom at a deeper level 

Finally, how well do you know your Mom (and/or Grandma)? How and where did she grow up and what are her fondest memories? Who are the funny, quirky, or best-to-avoid members of your extended family? What do you need to know of her medical history for her, or your sake? What are her unfulfilled desires or what is on her bucket list? Could you help her fulfill something on that list?

There's a lot you can do, or buy for Mother's Day that doesn't cost much but would be very meaningful. Just remember that however you choose to honour Mom, the time you spend and the connection you make to each other is what will matter most.

The good news is cherry blossoms are in full bloom and we're ready to say goodbye to dark days and cold weather! The first day of Spring has passed, and we at Girl Two Doors Down couldn’t be more excited. Here’s what we’re looking forward to most for the upcoming  season.

1. Longer, sunnier days

Yup, Daylight savings means Spring and we know it was rough to lose an hour of beauty sleep. On the bright side, the extra sun in the evening is hardly a bad tradeoff - this makes more time for happy hour drinks on the patio and evening strolls with lovers and girlfriends. The best part? Leaving the office with a little sunlight to spare. Hurrah.

2. Fresh Spring colors

Not only does the grass get greener, but so does your wardrobe. Put away the dreary sweaters and heavy coats, and check out Pantone's color of the year or try a new snazzy color that you wouldn’t usually wear. You just might surprise yourself.

3. Relaxing with a pedicure

Winter is over, so it’s time to bring those feet out of layered-fuzzy-socks-in-boots hiding. Mostly casual. I have a pattern of wearing v-neck tees, jeans and flip-flops!
