In this tutorial I show you the basics of moving, sizing and creating blocks in the Grid area of the Headway 3.0 visual editor.

It’s been almost two weeks since Headway 3.0, the premium theme for WordPress, was released.  Since it released the day after Thanksgiving, it took me awhile to make time to play with the newest version of one of the most flexible and comprehensive themes out there.  But finally, this past weekend I got the opportunity to do so and all I can say is “Wow!”.

For me, someone who loves to get creative with the sites I build, it’s taken WordPress site designing to a new level. I can literally put ‘blocks’ anywhere I want!  Blocks are the next generation of what prior versions of Headway called ‘leafs’. The name change makes sense, as the new blocks are a bit different from those leafs, but in a good way!  These blocks and the new Grid system combine to allow me to create just about any layout I can think of.

That alone would be an amazing change, but Headway goes above and beyond by morphing their original Design Editor from the prior version into the new Design screen with options for borders, colors, background images, font settings and more.  I was absolutely thrilled to learn that when I add a block, I can choose to change the design options for just that individual block right from the visual editor!  So when I have two or three custom code blocks on a page but only want one of them to have borders I no longer have to use CSS code to make that change.

In fact; although prior versions of Headway had already allowed me to build sites with very little custom coding; this new version is going to whittle that down to practically none.   I’m sure I still have plenty of new things to discover about the latest and greatest version of my favorite Headway theme, plus add-on blocks are already in the development stages to add even more functionality.   Once again the folks at Headway have given creative junkie’s like me reason to celebrate.
