We picked our Sauvignon Blanc this week. Check out our photos of Picking and processing the fruit.

Great flavours and natural acidity 11.0 Be and 10.1 TA. Lime green juice with lovely tones of capsicum and gooseberry. Cant wait to taste the wine!

The Battle with the Birds begins!

The last few weeks at the vineyard have been spent on trying to stop the birds getting the fruit! Crows and Parrots are the biggest problem and the relatively dry season means the birds are all looking for easy feed!

Also the wild deer and pigs have been having a go at the fruit.

Our solution is to net the vineyard, hopefully this will give us really great quality fruit for the 2012 vintage.

Granite Belt Wine Tasting Roadshow Toowoomba

14 premium wineries from the Granite Belt. Great crowd. Great night.

The Granite Belt premium wine producers showcased the regions fantastic wines at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba last night. Thanks to all the people from Toowoomba who came along. The roadshow event is a great way to sample the gems of the Granite Belt wineries all under one roof. More events are planned so keep an eye out for other events.

The event was put on by the Granite Belt Wine Tourism group www.granitebeltwinecountry.com.au and sponsored by Maxi-Tours and the Toowoomba Chronicle.

Our Gold medal winning Chardonnay was a popular choice for tasting as was our new release Sauvignon Blanc and of course our Sparkling wines.

Represented at the Roadshow were Pyramids Road, Girraween Estate (that’s us!), Ballandean Estate, Golden Grove Estate, Granite Ridge Wines, Ridgemill Estate, Felsberg Winery, Hidden Creek Winery, Twisted Gum Wines, Symphony Hill Wines, Lucas Estate, Tobin Wines, Jester Hill Wines and Summit Estate.

All great Granite Belt producers, some great wines to be sampled and a really supportive and informed wine loving crowd.

Girraween Estate 2011 Chardonnay wins Gold and Best Queensland White Wine of the Australian Small Winemakers Show

A great result for our very first entry into a wine show. Our newly branded Girraween Estate 2011 Unwooded Chardonnay has been selected by a panel of industry expert judges under the Chairmanship of David Morris of Morris of Rutherglen as worthy of a Gold medal in last week’s Australian Small Winemakers Show. The wine was also selected as the best Queensland white wine of the show – an amazing achievement!

The Australian Small Winemakers is a highlight of the Australian show circuit and attracts boutique producers from all around Australia and New Zealand. The quality of the wines was very good this year with 1750 wines entered.

What to expect in the coming year…

This year we are rejuvenating the vineyard with new trellising and the addition of a new exciting variety – Petit Verdot.

The other main change will be new viticulture practices aimed at lower yields and higher quality to put our vineyard into the top echelon of Australian boutique vineyards. Try our wines in the coming years and you will see the results!

This year we have designed a range of delicious, crisp and refreshing sparkling wines to enhance the tasting experience at our Cellar Door.

The sparkling wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Rosé. All of the wines are in an easy drinking style, especially for the Queensland palate. We like to think of our wines as a Queensland Sparkling wine styles.

Come to our Cellar Door and Lisa and Karen will show you some really fun wines.

A New Beginning

2009 heralded a new chapter in the Bald Mountain Vineyard (now Girraween Estate) history. This year Denis and Jackie decided to retire and sold the vineyard to Steve and Lisa Messiter. It is a bit of a Clayton’s retirement though as both Denis and Jackie are staying on to train up the new owners.

Bald Mountain Vineyards is recognised as a premium single vineyard producer due to the remarkable efforts of Denis and Jackie over the past 25 years. We look forward to continuing the tradition of award winning wines and adding some exciting new products to the Bald Mountain range.
