40 easy ways to make money quickly

2015-02-09T04:15:00.002-08:00

On this page you’ll find all the best ways to make money in your spare time whilst at university based on our own experience. We’ll keep adding new ways to this page so go ahead and bookmark it. And please do share your own ideas in the comments!

Top ways to make money online and offline

No-risk matched betting

Hands down the quickest way to make a lot of money (well, without breaking the law). Lots of students have genuinely made £100s from this technique. It’s completely legal, risk free, tax free, and anyone can do it.

It works by taking advantage of free bets regularly offered by betting sites (such as PaddyPower.com) through ‘matching’ them at a betting exchange. Matched betting eliminates the risk (you are betting both forand against a certain outcome).

This leaves you being able to squeeze out the free bet, which can be as much as £200! Multiply this by how many betting sites there are and you can quite easily come away with a profit of a few hundred pounds.

Owen walks you through how to make your first £15 profit (using a real life example) in this gem of a guide to matched betting. If you know of any better way to make £30/hr sitting at home, please let us know!
Online surveys

An increasingly popular way for students to make money is to fill out online surveys in their spare time. Research companies are always recruiting new members to answer surveys and test new products.

For a few minutes of form filling, you can make a couple of quid which is paid as cash or in rewards. You can make up to £3 for some surveys!

A few good ones to try are: Toluna, Vivatic, The Opinion Panel, MySurvey, Valued Opinions, iPoll, SurveyBods, Global Test Market, Hiving, PanelBase, Harris Poll, YouGov, Opinion Outpost, Pinecone, IPSOS, New Vista.

Also sign up for Swagbucks.com which rewards you for surveys as well as simply surfing the web, watching videos and playing games.

Update: See our new full guide to the best paid online surveys!
Paid for searching the web

Interested in earning cash for doing what you already do online? This has to be one of the easiest methods of making money online without really any effort or change in your behavior.

This innovative idea by Qmee.com rewards you for searching in Google, Bing or Yahoo. You just install a simple add-on to your browser and when you conduct a search there may be a few sponsored results alongside your normal search.
Each Qmee result has a cash reward attached – if you are interested in it simply click on it and collect your reward.

The best thing is there is no minimum to cashout – our first one was just 72p wired to our Paypal account. You also have the option to donate it to charity.

Social Investment Networks

The historically hard-to-break world of investing in stock markets and currencies has been cracked wide open. Today there is no need to be a fat cat or fund the yachts of Wolf of Wall Street style stock brokers. You can do it all yourself with the help of free online market trading platforms.

Having spent many hours researching this new opportunity, I’ve been experimenting with eToro.com which has over 4 million users worldwide. It was recently featured in the BBC 2 documentary “Traders: Millions by the Minute” and the Financial Times.

One of the best things on eToro is the CopyTrader feature. This lets you literally see, follow and copy the investments of other top performing traders. There’s also lots of training material and videos to help you out, and it’s free to create an account and use.

Start trading with a reasonable deposit and learn the ropes slowly. I think $200 is a good amount to get the most out of the learning curve by trying out a few different markets. If nothing else you’ll learn a great deal about various investments and industries.

Warning: trading can be volatile and you can lose money, so don’t throw your life savings into it!
Mobile phone recycling

See how much you can get for your old mobile phone using our in-housemobile phone price comparison tool! Maybe ask your parents if they have any lying around too.

You can get some good money and help the environment by recycling mobile phones with certain companies listed on the comparison tool. Most phones are shipped off to Asia to be dismantled and we know of at least one student who received a £120 cheque in return.
‘Get Paid To’ sites

Similar to making money from online surveys, GPT sites reward you in cash and vouchers for completing various offers or activities online.

The most popular sites today are Toluna,Swagbucks.com, InboxPounds andPaidOffers.

Exciting update! We’ll soon be launching our own GPT service for our readers. Invites will be limited and UK only, please join our mailing list if you’re interested in hearing once it’s live:
The ‘Disney Vault’ secret

To keep demand high across generations, Disney Studios carefully restrict the supply of some home release classics. They are locked away in the ‘vault’ for 8-10 years before being released for a short unspecified time.

Buy them in this window at normal retail price and you can turn a nice profit when they go off sale for another decade or so.
For example, in 2011 you could buy Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray 3D for just £24.99. In just a couple of years it’s now on Amazon for a staggering £74.99!

Importantly, not all Disney releases are subject to the vault and only the true most popular classics will maintain such demand.

Right now there are just 2 titles out of the vault which I would recommend snapping up. They are Bambi Diamond Edition Blu-ray for just £13.50 and Cinderella Diamond Edition Blu-ray for £14.
Start your own website

If you’ve ever seen the film The Social Network then you’ve most likely had your brain spinning as to what website you can start-up to make you billions.

And of course there are lots of stories out there about successful students who have started a site while at university, or even bought a domain name and later sold it for 1000s.

In fact, Save the Student is one such example of a website started at university by Owen Burek in his first year, which has since grown into a full-time and successful enterprise.

Read Owen’s 4-step guide to setting up a website if you’re interested in finding out more. It’s really not that difficult to get started and there are plenty of opportunities to make money online.
Write and publish a Kindle eBook

If students are good at anything, it’s researching and writing. With theAmazon Kindle store, anyone can publish an eBook and make money.

And the Kindle app is now available on almost any device (laptops, iPads, smartphones and yes, Kindles) so your global market is huge!

List your book for £1.49 – £6.99 and you earn 70% of the sale. Considering Amazon is the ultimate selling machine (and remember people are looking to spend), that is a fantastic deal.

The key to success with eBooks is to create value, and write non-fiction. Simply bundling information you have researched and complied on a common problem (eg. ‘secrets’ to finding a job) and then presenting it in an easy to digest format (an eBook) justifies someone spending a few quid on it.

Another big tip is to have a great cover designed so it stands out, and once your book is live on the Kindle store (approval takes less than 48 hours) it’s really important to get some reviews so it shows up higher in results. Encourage readers to leave an honest review at the end of your book.

The best thing about this lucrative idea is that once you’ve invested the time (say 20 hours), you’ll earn a passive income for years to come! For a step-by-step guide to publishing and earning with eBooks, see “How to write a nonfiction eBook in 21 days“.
Affiliate marketing

If you’ve got a good presence on social media or perhaps you even have a blog or website, you can start bringing in money immediately by promoting all sorts of companies, products, services and offers online.

Sign up to an affiliate network such as Affiliate Window, check their offers blog or browse the merchant listings to find something you think your friends would be interested in, grab your affiliate link and share it. If someone buys (can be within up to 90 days) using your link you’ll make a nice commission.

To take it a step further, set up a website (read our guide) or a topical Facebook page and invite all your friends to join it and post your affiliate offers on there.
Review music for money

If you love music, make it your business by reviewing unsigned bands and artists online for cash with Slicethepie.

It can take a while to build up your reputation but some users of the site have said that they earn £40 a month. This may not sound like much, but if it’s something you enjoy then it shouldn’t be hard work and is another thing for your CV. Money you earn will be in $US but anyone can sign up and review. To get started, head over to Slicethepie now or read our quick guide for more info.
Competitions

Entering competitions of course comes with no guarantees, but there is a growing community of so-called ‘compers’ in the UK consistently making up to £50,000 a year through all sorts of competitions.

Types of competitions available to enter range from simple registration forms and Facebook page liking to answering questions correctly over the phone to being a TV game show contestant. Imagine you made it ontoDeal or No Deal instead of just watching it!

Start by entering our very own monthly student competition (Like our Facebook page to see when our next one is)!

Then head to our active competitions page to enter other free competitions that we have found. Just note that some of these sites may send you spam so use an alias email address and opt-out of as many of the offers as possible.

For loads more tips on achieving success and making money from competitions, read our guide to entering competitions.
Claim tax back

Many students work part-time or during the summer months, and others will be on placements or paid internships. More often than not, if you are a student working during the year, you will be overpaying income tax.

Why? Simply because few students reach the personal tax-free income allowance each year but are put on an emergency basic tax-code by their employers meaning tax is being paid when it shouldn’t be.

Use our student tax-back service to help you reclaim any tax you should not have paid. Just enter your details in the calculator here to work out what you may be owed. Otherwise for more information read our guide on claiming tax back here.
Get cashback when shopping

I earned this much in 2 years

This is not only a way to make money but also to save money as a student. If you look at it in a different way then you are making money with every purchase you would have made anyway, whether it be 10% or 0.5% cashback.

There are a number of cashback sites out there which pay you the commission they otherwise would have earned.

We recommend signing up with both Top Cashback and Quidco.comwhich are free and offer the best selection of retailers and exclusives.
A part-time job

A part-time job is the obvious first choice, opted for by most students looking to supplement their student loan. It provides a pretty steady flow of income and can enable you to gain valuable work experience.

However, depending on where you live, jobs are not always easy to find. Check local classifieds, our student job search, student job websites and your university careers service for vacancies.

It’s also worth signing up with the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, a free service which will match you with both part-time jobs or graduate opportunities.

Read our guide to finding a part-time job whilst studying for more tips.
Gigs on Fiverr

Fiverr is now the world’s largest marketplace for people to make money selling small services (known as ‘gigs’).

What you offer could be absolutely anything, from writing and translating, social media posting, playing pranksand teaching to creating music, voiceovers and short video clips for people all around the world!

The default price is $5 (hence Fiverr..), but you can attach extra services to gigs for more money. Whilst it might not seem like much, it can quickly add up and there are plenty of examples of people making a really good living from the site. The key is to get a system in place which minimises the time spent on each gig.

But there is another way to profit even more from Fiverr for potentially far less work. How? By simply reselling gigs elsewhere. For example, find a decent logo designer then reply to jobs on Elance or even local classifieds. A $5 spend can easily become $50+, and it’s repeatable!

If you’re not interested in selling at all there’s SO much good stuff you can get done for yourself. Have a browse and get inspired!
Sell second-hand course books

One great way to make money is to buy other students’ text books at the end of the year, and then sell them just after freshers’ week – when the new intake of students know that they need them!

You can either advertise on campus or list them online very easily onAmazon.co.uk Books Trade-In (just bear in mind they take a commission on books sold).

For more tips on selling items online click here.
Become an Amazon ‘Mechanical Turk’

Don’t ask us what this means, all we know is that it’s an easy way to make fast cash from your sofa. The concept is based on ‘internet crowd-sourcing’ where businesses advertise specific, scalable tasks they need completing quickly.

There are a variety of tasks (known as HITS), but most commonly they involve mindless data entry or form filling. You are rewarded in cash (though $USD) for the work you do, and you can choose for what and when you work. Give it a go [Update: Currently US signups only, tryClickWorker].
Buy and sell domain names

A domain name is just a website address (eg. ‘savethestudent.org’ or ‘mysite.co.uk’) and there are lots of extensions (.com, .net, .co.uk etc).

They cost as little as £1.99 to register with 123-reg.co.uk or GoDaddy.com yet premium domain names can fetch £1,000s if not millions when sold on. In 2007 VacationRentals.com went for a cool $35m!

Now you’re probably not going to come across anything like that, but you can still turn a quick profit with a bit of searching. The trick is to find available domain names which have some commercial value, snap them up and then list them for sale on a site like DomainLore.
Be an extra

Do you fancy yourself as a budding young actor or just that person that walks past in the background shot of an episode of Eastenders? It could be you if you apply to be an extra.

The pay isn’t bad either – £60-80 a day on average, and you hardly have to do anything!

You can apply at Be On Screen for a number of opportunities or 2020 casting is another agency (just know they take a cut from your earnings).
Sell all your old CDs, games and movies

If you are looking to make a very quick buck, then selling your old bits and bobs that are cluttering up your room is a good idea.

The best thing about it is that you can rip all the songs and films onto your laptop or external hard drive before selling them. This means that you are only really selling the plastic and artwork!

You can earn anything from 10p to £20 per item, and the earnings can really add up if you have a large collection. Whilst you’re at it, see if your parents have any ‘clutter’ they’d be happy to see the back of.

You can also sell almost anything for free on Amazon Trade-In orPreloved and sites like MusicMagpie will pay you instantly for sending in unwanted items.

For more tips and places to sell check out our guide on selling DVDs, CDs and games.
Sell on your education!

Become a tutor to local GCSE or A-level students (find out more about tutoring here). There are now a few online tutor sites too, so you can go also global without too much hassle.

You may feel as if you aren’t qualified to be a tutor, but seeing as you are at university you will most likely have the qualifications to tutor for GCSE or even A-Level. Some parents may feel that their child will react better to a younger tutor, and it can be great experience, so why not give it a go?

You can advertise on SchoolsTrader or sign up withBright Young Things & UK Tutors. You can expect to earn around £10 an hour. However, make sure you don’t have to do too much tutoring around your exams!
Sell your photos

If you think you’ve got a good shot and a little creativity, try uploading your photographs for free to stock websites. A good starting point isFotolia or istockphoto.

Make more money selling photo subjects that people are demanding, and there’s a great resource to find this out here. It might be a good idea to test them out in print first yourself (get free photo prints here).
Rent out your car parking space

Some student accommodation comes with a drive or garage. If you aren’t using your parking space and you live in a busy area then you might be in luck. There are plenty of people that may work in the city centre and are fed up of paying through the roof for daily parking.

Advertise your space on Gumtree, Parkletor Just Park.

Or, check out our full guide to renting out your parking space.
Work as a charity collector

Ok so this job takes a certain kind of person, as you’ll have to take a lot of rejection and be persistent.

But if you are bubbly, personable and reckon you could sell ice to an Eskimo then this could actually be a great student money making idea. You get paid commission on new sign ups (typically around £20).

Have a look at Wesser as well as charity websites like Oxfam.
Babysitting

Advertise your services locally. It’s a classic money-maker, and for good reason. You get paid (well) to watch TV and not very much else!

Be warned that you will need a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check to look after small children, even though some parents may not ask for one. If you are wondering what to charge, then look at local ads but you can expect to be paid over £6 hour even if you aren’t trained in child care. It really is easy money (unless you get stuck with the child from hell!).
Become a freelance interviewer

Do you have ambitions to take on a career in HR? Do you love asking questions? Believe it or not, there are companies that will ask you to carry out interviews for them and pay you for your time. It couldn’t be simpler.

You could make £185 a week plus have your travelling costs covered. The downside is that you will have to commit to at least 20 hours a week, so make sure that you have the time! Apply at NatCen.
Mystery shopping

Becoming a mystery shopper is easier than you think. You can get paid to spend money in shops, usually in the form of a voucher for the shop in question.

For more info on where to apply check out ourguide to becoming a mystery shopper.
Dog walking

Dog walking may sound trivial but it’s big business. Just think that as a student you’re likely to have free time during the day when others are out at work and worried about their pets at home.

You could make around £7 a dog for a 1 hour walk, and it’s also a great way to keep fit. Sign up to and try sites like Tailster that match you up with dog owners. Alternatively advertise your services locally with fliers or on classified websites such as Gumtree.
Rent out your house for filming

Directors for TV and film are always on the hunt for houses to film in. For instance, a scene forCoronation Street was recently filmed in the student house one of the Save the Studenteditors used to live in!

Not only can you make good money but it’s crazy seeing your own place on TV. Start out by looking at film-locations.co.uk.
Rent out your body

Ok, ok – this isn’t what you think. “Renting out your body” can go as far as you want it to go. For example we reported on a story a while back about students who are turning to lap dancing to make a quick buck.

If you are comfortable taking off your kit for a more acceptable cause then why not try life modelling. Sit there in the buff while budding artists capture your every curve (or pokey bits) in frightening detail! Try RAM, a website especially designed for these kind of jobs.

You could also get involved in clinical drug trials. If this scares you a little then you can find more information here about what’s involved.

Warning: Do not do anything you are not comfortable with, no matter how desperate you are for money! There has been an unhealthy rise in student prostitution in recent years – do not fall victim to it!
Freelance work

Perhaps you enjoy writing, managing Facebook pages or doing a little bit of graphic design in your spare time. There are so many freelance jobs out there that require simple skills or just time that someone else might not have.

And the best things about freelancing is that you can work for clients in the UK and around the world with just an internet connection from home, to your own hours whilst developing valuable skills.

A great place to start is with the leading freelance site Elance.com. Or try using our student job search to find freelance jobs.
Busking

If you can sing or dance then this is your time to shine baby! Did you know that Justin Bieber started off busking? That’s right, with a little work you can be as annoying as him.

There are really no tips for this except choose a good spot with high footfall, make sure you are good and play your heart out. Some buskers in the past have been known to make upwards of £20 hour.
Sell clothes on eBay

Everyone’s best friend when it comes to getting rid of junk is eBay. Online auctions are a sure-fire way to turn that sleeveless jacket (which came in and out of fashion in a week) into hard cash.

Some eBay sellers look at trends and try to predict what will be big ahead of the market. If you are good and don’t mind taking a risk then you can buy early in bulk and sell on when the craze hits.

For lots more tips on selling on eBay read this guide.
Sell your stories and videos

If you have an interesting story then you could try selling it to the papers. It could be anything from sleeping with a professional footballer to getting caught in a clothes horse!

One of the Save the Student team was unfortunate enough to have a pigeon fly through and smash their window at university and sold the story to The Sun for a tidy £50.

You could also film your mates at all times and send it into You’ve Been Framed to net yourself £250 and a few seconds of fame.
Sign up for psychology experiments

These are the things you may get to your student e-mail inbox from your university or careers service every now and then. They aren’t dangerous and usually don’t require too much effort or time. They tend to compensate you quite well (around £10/hour), and they may even interest you!

It’s worth bearing in mind that these are different from the medical or body experiments/horror stories that you hear about. There will (hopefully) be no strange probes involved!
YouTube videos

According to recent stats we now watch more videos on YouTube than searches on Google. And with the recently introducedYouTube Partner Program you can now profit from making and uploading videos. You will receive a percentage of the advertising revenue collected per 1,000 views.

Depending on how successful you are (virality, subscriber base and topic) you can make a lot of money, and there are plenty of stories every week of more and more YouTubers making it their career.

For more tips read our guide to making money from YouTube.
Network marketing

Also known as Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), this is a business model that allows you to generate ongoing income in two ways: by making a commission selling products and by recruiting other members who go on to sell. The later allows you to make money from the sales made by those you have recruited.

Importantly, this is not a pyramid scheme (they are illegal) because there is an end goal which involves a customer buying a product or service of value.

It’s also not a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. You will have to work I’m afraid! However with the growth of social media, network marketing is becoming easier and lots of people are now making a decent living from it.

This is a serious way of making good money on your own terms and it’s well worth reading up on it. I recommend getting “The Business of the 21st Century” by Robert Kiyosaki.
Source property for wealthy investors

We all know how much money there is in property, but on the surface (with house prices as high as they are) you might be thinking this market is off-limits.

Truth is, lots of people make a great deal of cash simply sourcing suitable properties for wealthy investors who simply have no time.

The trick is to find properties below market value (BMV) by avoiding estate agents and instead flyering your area with your contact details offering to buy houses. Then approach investors with a no-brainer offer to pass on the details of cut-price property in exchange for a % of the sale value.

Most cities will have monthly networking events for landlords and property investors. Track these down, sign up, put on your best suit and go along with lots of business cards. Or you could start on LinkedIn or even Twitter to build some initial contacts.

As you might imagine, this isn’t necessarily a quick way to make money but once you’ve got a few investors in your phone book it can prove to be very lucrative in the long run. If you’re interested, I recommend readingthis book.
Advertise your other skills

What can you do well where others struggle? Fix bikes, computers, write articles, create websites, make cupcakes or fresh lemonade?!

The key is to be creative and think outside the box. A writer at Save the Student actually made small models out of beer cans and wire and sold them to other students. Great idea with big profits!

There are many other creative ways to make money as a student. With any luck you’ll be on the road to making millions! Please feel free to share your own ideas by leaving a comment below.

5 Tips to Keep Your Home-Based Business Legal

2012-12-14T06:53:00.002-08:00

The end of the year is a time when people contemplate starting their own business. Whether that contemplation is triggered by an end-of-year layoff or a new year's resolution, home-based businesses will be on the minds of many.

A home-based business can be anything from a single programmer or consultant who virtually hangs a shingle to a vintage clothing company, jewelry maker, window washer, or cupcake baker.

"When I was between companies, I started a tye-dye clothing business at home," says Nellie Akalp, CEO of legal document provider CorpNet.com. Since her business these days is to help people creating companies, she shared some simple rules for making sure that you're protecting yourself while starting a business.

1. Pick the right business name.

Make sure you do a search for your businesses' name, and clear the trademark. "Check first with your Secretary of State's Office for the use of your businesses' name in the state and county, and then do a national trademark search," says Akalp, whose company provides free name searches. "If you find someone else using the name, consider paying a service for a comprehensive name search to make sure you're not going to impinge on another company's trademark--the last thing you want to do is to have to change your business name after you've starting doing business."

2. Pick the appropriate business structure.

Consult with a tax professional before you determine your businesses' legal structure. While you can start doing business as a sole practitioner today, there can be tax advantages to forming an LLC or an S-Corporation. Additionally, having a corporation can provide you with an air of legitimacy--you're no longer "some dude working out of his basement."

The decision to form an LLC or a Chapter s corporation can also be based on your comfort with formality. "An LLC provides maximum legal protection with minimum paperwork," says Akalp. "An S-Corporation is good for a company who can handle the paperwork and you can qualify to be on the payroll as an owner. If you're not ready to incorporate, create a fictitious business name, also known as a "DBA" or Doing Business As name."

3. Get a tax ID.

While a sole proprietor can give a social security number to vendors or customers for their records, it is best to get a tax ID, also know as an EIN, which issued by the IRS. "You don't want your Social Security number floating everywhere," Akalp states. It is also more professional to have an EIN. These are required for an LLC or Corporation.

4. Obtain a registered agent.

If you're working from home, you may not want clients to know it. Since the legal address for your corporation is made part of the public record, you may want business and legal notices to be delivered someplace other than your home. For an LLC or S-corporation, a registered agent's address is substituted for yours for purpose of public notices. Additionally, says Akalp, if you're not incorporating, you can get a P.O. Box or use a mailing company for a DBA entity.

5. Get permits or licenses.

As home-based business owner, it is your job to check on local permits. You may need a business license. A cupcake baker may have to undergo a health inspection, and there may be zoning rules as well. Akalp advises, "Handle them from the start rather than dealing with it after the fact, as you may have back payments or penalties for ignoring the rules."

The Best (and Hardest) Way to Start a Company

2012-11-30T07:36:00.001-08:00

This article is quoted from http://www.inc.com for Jeff Haden.

How to live the entrepreneurial dream while minimizing your risks and maximizing your success. (Warning: This ain't easy.)

Starting a business is easy. You can do it in a day.
Starting a business that lasts is a lot harder, even if you put all your time and money into it. And the all-in approach is a lot riskier, since the more time and money you invest the more you put at risk.
So if you haven't yet taken the entrepreneurial plunge, how can you live your entrepreneurial dream while minimizing your risks and maximizing your chances of success?
Simple: Start your business—and keep your full-time job.
Except in rare cases, keeping a full-time job is the best approach for first-time business owners.
It's also the hardest approach, since sacrifice, discipline, and a massive amount of hard work will be necessary. But that's okay; if you aren't willing to work hard and sacrifice, your new business will fail whether you keep your full-time job or not.
Here are six steps to minimizing risk while building a solid foundation for small business success:

1. Live like a college student.

Almost every business venture requires spending money before making money. (And if money isn't required, time certainly is... and time is money.) Some small businesses take years to turn a profit.
A huge percentage of start-ups fail because they run out of money, and even if you do not, chronic money problems can lead to making poor long-term decisions.
Never assume personal savings will see you through. Eliminate every bit of personal spending that isn't necessary.
Before you start your business, cut all your personal expenses to the bone.

2. Work incredibly hard at your current job.

When small business capital and cash flow are tight, losing your income is the last thing you can afford. Be a superstar. Work as hard and efficiently as possible. Get more done than anyone else you so you can leave on time without regret—and without raising concerns about your performance and dedication.
Work incredibly hard at your job so your evening and weekend time is yours, not your employer's.
You'll need it.

3. Set a daunting schedule.

When your "normal" work day ends, your start-up workday is just beginning.
Decide how many hours you think you can spend on your start-up every evening and add 25 to 50%.
Then commit to that schedule. Write it down, and if your schedule says you will work from 5.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every evening, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends, work those hours.
See the schedule you create for your start-up the same way you see your schedule for your current job—as non-negotiable.
Then work that schedule.

4. Ignore the temptation to whine about your daunting schedule.

Say you start a consulting business. Once you land a few clients you'll be working every evening and most weekends.
That's not a bad thing; it's a good thing. Landing clients means you're generating revenue.
You may have to get up early every day to take care of emails and voicemails before you head off to work. In large part your clients will choose your work hours for you.
Don't whine. Don't complain. Keep reminding yourself that having demanding clients is great because it means you actually have clients.
Resist the temptation to complain or feel sorry for yourself. Happily pay the price—it's a price most other people won't pay.

5. Be Ebenezer Scrooge.

At first you'll be tempted to spend your profits. That's natural.
Don't. Reinvest every dollar you earn. Use profits to set up the business infrastructure you need (not the one you want, but the one you need.) Buy supplies. Buy equipment you've been renting. Advertise. Or save cash to tide you through inevitable revenue downswings.
Don't think of profits as income; think of profits as a tool to further establish your business.

6. Keep your full-time job longer than you want.

Deciding when to quit your job and go into business full-time is the hardest decision you will make.
It's impossible to make an objective decision when you're tired, stressed, sick of your full-time job, sick of your boss... or when you just want your life back.
But don't quit too soon. When in doubt, hold out. Always focus on numbers, not emotions.
Your financials—personal and business—will tell you when it's finally time to quit your job.

This article is quoted from Paul Smith journal, a technology editor based in Sydney's newsroom.

Paul Smith

Rapid evolution of technology and frequent disruption wrought by the internet on established businesses will dramatically reduce the number of companies looking to list on public markets in the coming years and see a rush of listed players looking to go private.

This is the prediction of Deloitte Australia’s top technology, media and telecommunications expert.

Damien Tampling says the emergence of new and niche players in many market sectors has left incumbent players lead-footed. But nervous investors and the “short-termism” engendered by frequent reporting requirements means many companies are too fearful to make the bold moves needed to change course.

News last week that Google is partnering with MasterCard to launch its own credit card is a precursor to an era of joint ventures between incumbent and insurgent players, Tampling says. In a period of mutually beneficial co-operation, established players in various sectors will benefit from partnerships with more agile and innovative players.

Meanwhile, technology-focused companies will seek to piggyback on the reputations of established names to make an impact in new markets.

“In the next decade we are going to see an unprecedented level of joint ventures and alliances, and an increased preference for companies being privately owned,” Tampling says.

“Listing a company worked in the context when you could see a settled and positive outlook for the following three to five years, or even longer. Unfortunately the business environment and the speed that things are evolving doesn’t afford you that luxury.”

Companies need to react, and change direction quickly, if a new competitor emerges, he says, but admits that successfully managing a business in this manner would make any chief executive unpopular with investors.

Tampling says established retailers and media players are the most obvious examples of industry verticals being challenged by global technology players. But potentially smart moves to counteract the threat are likely to be punished by the markets.

“Investors may see bringing in a joint- venture partner as an admission that the business does not possess the necessary skills, and start selling off. Whereas it may be the best thing it could do for the longer term prospects of the company,” Tampling says.

“There is a degree of short-termism that exists for listed companies, but companies need to be able to think further ahead when making significant changes. They are being required to move quickly in so many different directions that I think being listed will just make it unnecessarily hard.”

Risk advisory partner at business advisory firm BDO, Stephen Coates, says he is yet to see a rush for the exit among listed companies.

But with more established businesses facing a make-or-break period, they need to reassess how they operate, Coates says.

He says there is an “alarming” under-representation of technology and internet experience on the boards of listed Australian companies. “[So] it is hard for established retailers to turn the juggernaut around when there is a speedboat running past them,” Coates says.

“A first step is for larger businesses to recognise that their market is broader than just the people that come and visit their stores, and to use their existing reputations to branch out online.”

Coates says businesses must boldly attack new product lines online, rather than protecting a perceived established reputation. For example, he says that while luxury retailers will struggle to compete for price online, that doesn’t mean they should ignore the internet.

“You look at Apple . . . they are a computer company that is essentially selling more cameras than anyone else in the world. I suspect if they sold scooters or wheelbarrows, people would go and buy Apple scooters and wheelbarrows, because they find a niche market and then retail to the customers in it.”

10 Effective Ways To Reduce Your Business Costs

2012-09-21T03:33:00.000-07:00

1. Barter
If you have a business you should be bartering goods and services with other businesses. You should try to trade for something before you buy it. Barter deals usually require little or no money.

2. Network
Try networking your business with other businesses. You could trade leads or mailing lists. This will cut down on your marketing and advertising costs. You may also try bartering goods and services with them.

3. Wholesale/Bulk
You'll save money buying your business supplies in bulk quantities. You could get a membership at a wholesale warehouse or buy them through a mail order wholesaler. Buy the supplies you are always
running out of.

4. Free Stuff
You should try visiting the thousands of freebie sites on the internet before buying your business supplies. You can find free software, graphics, backgrounds, online business services etc.

5. Borrow/Rent
Have you ever purchased business equipment you only needed for a small period of time? You could have just borrowed the equipment from someone else or rented the equipment from a "rent-all" store.

6. Online/Offline Auctions

7. Plan Ahead
Make a list of business supplies or equipment you'll need in the future. Keep an eye out for stores that have big sales. Purchase the supplies when they go on sale before you need them.

8. Used Stuff
If your business equipment and supplies don't need to be new, buy them used. You can find used items at yard and garage sales, used stores, used stuff for sale message boards and newsgroups etc.

9. Negotiate
You should always try negotiate a lower price for any business equipment or supplies. It doesn't hurt to try. Pretend you are talking to a salesman at a car lot.

10. Search
You can always be searching for new suppliers for your business supplies and equipment. Look for suppliers with lower prices and better quality. Don't just be satisfied with a few.

How to Stay Focused on Your Home Business Goals

2012-08-20T04:43:00.001-07:00

Hello readers,
Focus is the real key to success in anything... especially a home business on the Internet. There are so any distractions and competing influences, but if you can stay focused and keep putting one foot in front of the other, you can succeed!
Here's today's feature article:

How to Stay Focused on Your Home Business Goals?
When you are the owner of a home business, you will find hundreds of distractions that vie for your time, energy and focus.

Common distractions include: children, family, friends, neighbors, pets, phone calls, mail, household chores, video games, television, neighborhood children, visitors, and so many more.

As an owner of a home based business, you must always remember your purpose in bringing your profession home. What was your reason for wanting to own a home business? Was your goal to work
from home so that you can share in the lives of your children?
Was your goal to be out from under the rule of a tyrannical boss? Was your goal to have the freedom to work when it is convenient for you? Was your goal to make tons of money working
for yourself?

Here`s a few good tips that will help you stay focused on your home business:

TIP #1:
Whatever your reason for going out on your own, you must keep your reason in the forefront of your mind. If you forget your reason for starting your own home business, you will not be working for yourself for long. It is far too easy to let circumstance drive your activities --- and when circumstance is in the driver`s seat, you are more likely to crash and burn.

TIP #2:
Remember --- your own business is a lot like a real job. Some people go to work to play, some go to socialize, and others --- most often those who are paid in a commission or tip environment --- go to work to work and to make money. When you work for yourself, your salary is directly proportional to your productivity. Therefore, wouldn`t it make sense to stay focused on getting as much done in as short of a period as possible?

Go to work to work and to make money. Leave playtime and recreation for when your workday has ended.

TIP #3:
When you are dealing with family in the course of your workday, it is important to schedule your activities as much as possible.
With small children, you must take time when you must, but you should also work hard to make sure you dedicate a specific number of hours to your workday.

With older children, it is much easier to tell them that you will be working between the hours of x and y. Your children and your friends must understand that certain hours of your day are devoted to the activities of your business.

TIP #4:
Don`t permit your friends and extended family to run over you. Many people get the blind idea that if one works from home then they are not actually working.

Well-meaning people may try to fill your doorway to bring advice about getting a real job. Others may simply believe that if you are at home, then you are fair game for chitchat and socialization.

You must stand firm. You must make certain your friends and family understands that when you are working, then you ARE working! If they wish to socialize with you, then they need to do it during the hours that are not dedicated to your home business.

You are the only one who can stand up for you. Your friends and family will seldom be able to appreciate your dedication to your home business, unless you make the effort to make sure that they have the same respect for your business that you do.

TIP #5:
You should allot a certain portion of your day to email and to regular mail. For example, allot one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon to handling your written communications.

Unless you dedicate certain times to the handling of these communications, you will soon find yourself on the downward slope of decreased productivity.

TIP #6:
When you find yourself spending too much time doing non-productive activities, then you should seriously consider finding a third-party service provider who will assist you in those non-profitable business activities.

As an example, you might be in the mail-order business. You might believe that your time is best spent writing ad copy and setting up your advertising, but you find yourself spending far too much time taking care of your books to take care of your advertising in the manner that you should. In this event, it might make more sense to hire a bookkeeper to handle your financial records for you.

CONCLUSION:
In the end, the success of your home business is entirely and completely reliant upon you and the decisions that you make.

You had your reasons for deciding to start your own home based business. You must always keep your reasons in the forefront of your mind. You must always be able to rely upon your own self and your dedication to the success of your business.

Your friends and family might be annoyed that they cannot come visit upon their own whim, but when success comes to you and your business, they will better appreciate you for putting your foot down when necessary.

Success is within your reach, if only you can stay focused on your goals. You must decide to reach for your goals, and then, you must have the discipline necessary to reach them.

"Give Money To Moms" Tips

2012-08-11T07:01:00.000-07:00

Moms know that staying home with the kids is an important job, perhaps the most important job that a woman can have. Unfortunately, few moms can afford to give up all of the income they've been contributing to the family coffers. However, finding the right work from home job can be a bit of a challenge. Luckily, moms can find ways to contribute to the household’s financial well being while they are hunting for the perfect work from home job. The internet provides easier ways to build a money making system.

Do your children have toys they've barely touched or clothing they’ve outgrown that is still in good shape? One great way to make a bit of extra money is to gather up all of the items you aren’t using anymore and hold a garage sale or yard sale. Make sure that everything is clean, well organized, and clearly priced before you hold your sale. You should have a sign that clearly announces the sale in your front yard and you may want to also place a classified ad in your local paper. To save on advertising costs and generate more interest, ask a few other neighborhood moms to chip in.

If you don’t live in a yard sale friendly location, you can still resell your children’s gently worn clothing as they outgrow it. Check the local yellow pages for the phone numbers for a few consignment shops. Be sure to talk to a few different shops to find one that has a low consignment fee and is also clean and well organized.
Of course, you can also earn money by going to yard sales and buying nice items at low prices to resell on eBay. Before you begin buying things, take some time to look at eBay auctions to see what sells and what doesn’t. Some of the oddest items, such as children’s weaving looms or fast food collectibles still in the bag, sell for a good sum of money. Other things don’t sell at all.

Another great way for moms to make money is to combine coupons, sales, and rebates. During the Christmas season, many stores have substantial rebate offers for everything from tools to pre-paid cellular phones. You can have a wonderful Christmas without blowing the family budget, which will make you feel just as happy after the holiday as your kids feel while they are opening their gifts. Of course, quite a few drug stores have rebate offers for hair dye, shampoos, and extension cords throughout the year. If you use these items, you probably planned to buy them anyway, but you may not have been considering buying them if you have no use for them. However, even if you don’t need something that is free or almost free after rebate, you may want to buy it to add to your yard sale stash.

Finally, if you’d like to be able to afford a few fun extras, you may want to consider doing a bit of mystery shopping. You can get free meals, trips to the movies, or clothing in exchange for information about your shopping experience. Just be sure you don’t pay for mystery shopper information. One of the best free places to find legitimate companies that offer mystery shopping is www.internetbasedmoms.com
