I find it intense, very original and in between genres, with a very interesting melodic part in the middle, with spoken word parts reminding me of Phil Anselmo and some Fates Warning vibes. Both performance and production are top notch, the riffs sound massive.

When Neal Morse first announced Neal Morse & The Resonance in 2024, fans and critics were surprised to see the celebrated prog rock visionary collaborating with a group of exceptionally talented yet relatively unknown musicians. The resulting album, No Hill For A Climber, was met with overwhelming praise, showcasing a fresh creative chemistry that resonated strongly with audiences worldwide.

Now, just two years later, the band continues that journey with River of Light, an album that expands upon the musical and spiritual foundations established by its predecessor.

Reflecting on the project, Morse explains:

"Following the success of No Hill For A Climber and some really great live shows in the summer of 2025, we knew that we wanted to make more music together. We started kicking around ideas in October 2025 and ended up spending much more time on this record. At one point it looked like it might become a double album because we had so many ideas. Eventually, we trimmed it down to a single album, and I think it works great."

At its core, River of Light is a concept album centered on a spiritual journey, a theme familiar to Morse's longtime fans. This time, however, the inspiration comes from the often-overlooked biblical figure Terah, the father of Abraham.

"Terah signifies someone who begins a journey with God but gets tired and allows sadness and resignation to keep them from going all the way," says Morse. "However, his son completes the journey."

Musically, River of Light represents a true collaborative effort. While Morse remains the band's creative anchor, the album highlights the significant contributions of guitarist Andre Madatian and vocalist Jonny Bisaha, whose influences bring a fresh energy and perspective to the material.

"On this album, you can really hear what these guys have brought to the table," Morse says. "Partly because of their ages, they're influenced by bands like Rush and 90s rock, which I think is really cool. We had so many ideas that simply fitting everything together and creating the right flow became a challenge in itself."

Canadian metal maverick Devin Townsend released his long-awaited, ambitious, orchestral-metal opus ‘The Moth’, earlier this year in May. Now, Devin is pleased to announce a new stand-alone live version of the album, titled ‘The Moth (The War-Live in Groningen), from the live premiere of this magnificent work in March 2025. An album over a decade in the making, it existed in the back of Devin Townsend’s mind as his “life’s work”. Then, about six years ago, after an acoustic show in Amsterdam, Townsend was approached by the head of the North Netherlands’ Orchestra and Choir with an offer; and with that moment The Moth stopped being an idea and began to become a reality. Featuring the full orchestra and choir conducted by Jukka Isakilla, principal conductor of the Metropole Orchestra and long-time collaborator with mutual friend Steve Vai, on the 27^th & 28^th March 2025, The Moth was premiered live in its entirety. It is this performance documented on ‘The Moth (The War – Live in Groningen). If The Moth has a central gravitational theme, Townsend names it plainly: true self-acceptance. Something sturdier than slogans, closer to a practiced willingness to face what is uncomfortable without turning away. As Devin explains: “The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable—only the spirit.”

At the hardest moments, when abandoning the project might have seemed rational, Townsend points to the team as the decisive factor. A host of incredible musicians and contributors participated throughout the course of this process, as well as the North Netherlands Orchestra & Choir and orchestrators Joseph Stevenson & Niels Bye Nielsen. Long time band members, that are well established names in their own right; Darby Todd (drums), Mike Keneally (guitars/keys) and James Leach (bass) all played a huge part in this performance, as well as vocal guests Anneke van Giersbergen and Lynn Wu (Ou). Even Steve Vai is credited with co-writing the delicate ‘Intermission’. Devin himself freely pays tribute to the substantial team that helped him land this behemoth of a plane at this special, and so far singular, performance from Groningen.

HOPE serves as a timely meditation on a turbulent time in the modern world. Without venturing into overt political commentary, its songs reflect on an era often marked by division and diminishing empathy while ultimately offering a message rooted in hope, acting as a roadmap, how to get there and re-ignite love in our hearts and our society.

The album's compositions come from Stolt and keyboardist Lalle Larsson, with its centerpiece being the nearly 30-minute epic "The Gods of Rome." Originally conceived from orchestral ideas developed more than a decade ago, the piece took an unexpected creative journey, at one point nearly becoming the musical foundation for another Anderson & Stolt project before ultimately finding its true home with The Flower Kings. Reimagined for the full band, it has evolved into a powerful reflection on contemporary life, using the imagery of ancient Rome to explore enduring themes of power, conflict, and the human cost of ambition.

Joining Stolt and Larsson once again are Hans Fröberg on vocals, Michael Stolt on bass, and Mirko DeMaio on drums. Supported by heartfelt performances from every member of the band, along with a number of special guests, the resulting album unfolds as a rewarding listening experience that reveals new details with each return. Stolt explains, “Like I said 37 years ago - 'This is the band I will be in for the rest of my days' - but I wouldn't dream of us making one of our finest albums ever in 2026!”

Turning Jane - Be A Doll

Dear Jane is a rock band from LA, and their new single “Be a Doll” is a big FU to the people who refuse to take no for an answer in a bar.

The song captures the frustration of unwanted attention and the exhaustion that comes with having your boundaries repeatedly ignored. There’s nothing wrong with being polite and setting boundaries, but once those boundaries are crossed, there’s no reason to keep playing nice. At its core, “Be a Doll” is about taking ownership of your voice and telling that person to simply leave you alone.

I love the energy and mood of the song. There are no unnecessary frills, just catchy vocal lines, a super-solid rhythm section and some genuinely inspired guitar work. Lady - Down to the Water

Star Circus - Masquerade

London rock band Star Circus fuses classic 70s and 80s rock swagger with a collaborative modern edge. Fronted by Dave Winkler and Sophie Aurelia Young, the band built on the acclaim of their 2022 Tony Wilson-produced debut by returning with their sophomore album, From The Wreckage (via Renaissance Records).

Masquerade is the first Star Circus track that features bassist Sophie Aurelia Young stepping up to lead vocal duties, and also her first solo writing effort.

"The masquerade is a metaphor for feeling like you have to hide a part of yourself in order to be accepted. The lyric ideas came from my own experience of spending my youth feeling like I should try to fit in, and never really finding a place where I felt accepted. The song ends on a more positive note as I did eventually find 'my people'; my partner Dave and friends on the London rock scene who are unapologetically themselves and encourage me to be the same. I wanted the outro to keep a melancholy and slightly ominous feel as a reminder that life will always inevitably consist of both highs and lows."

Masquerade features relaxed (but intense) verses exploding in a super catchy chorus. The guitars are always very inspired and there is a great solo section toward the end of the song. The Wildfires - Talking To My Baby

The Wildfires may only be 19 years old, but one spin of their new single “Talking to My Baby” reveals a mature, seasoned rock sound that feels crafted by lifelong veterans. The band commented on their new single. "I Am" is written from the perspective of the one within you who leads to your own destruction. The one within you who seems to lead you to make the wrong decision, even though you know what the right thing to do is. It is a song the reflects on the nature of humanity; with the ability to choose right or wrong, good or bad, and is sang from the perspective of the "bad guy" within you that wants to lead you astray. Hayden Birmingham - Rude Mood (2026)

Australian instrumental guitarist Hayden Birmingham delivers an unapologetic storm of blues-metal swagger, high-octane hard rock, and technical shredding. Fusing blistering lead work and intricate solos with heavy, riff-driven grooves, Birmingham’s sound channels classic rock heavyweights with sheer guitar virtuosity and satirical glory.

After releasing a couple of singles like “Getcha Pull” and “A Day Late, And A Dollar Short”it's time now for his debut album. Rude Mood comprises of 12 songs for 36 minutes of music.

The album opens with a relaxed, Western feel on "If I didn't have Bad Luck, I had no luck at all," setting up a great entry point for the two energetic and punchy singles that follow, which recall Ritchie Sambora in both mood and guitar style. "Spilt Milk Under The Bridge" brings Joe Satriani to mind and will instantly get your foot tapping, while "Chilli Bomb" delivers a similar vibe paired with very cool basslines and riffs reminiscent of Use Your Illusion-era Slash. Bringing a distinct change of mood, "Miura & Manolete" introduces stunning Spanish-inspired guitar work.

Among the other standout tracks, "Act in Haste, Repent at Leisure" features incredible solos, "Angry Mama" hits with a bluesy groove, "Barracudalou" shines through its tight rhythm section, and the atmospheric "Lullabies for A Broken Fretboard" closes the record in much the same mood as it began.

Overall, Rude Mood is a eclectic album with a top-tier performance and an amazing production quality as well. Every song has something genuine to say while staying straight to the point, a rare and welcome quality in an instrumental record.

Funus - Dreamless Water (2026)

Founded in 2006 by Dutch multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Ruben Vermeulen, Funus crafts dark, introspective soundscapes by weaving together shoegaze, doom, and post-metal. The project’s latest offering, Dreamless Water, is a nine-track descent into total shadow, expanding its sound into deeper, more claustrophobic territory. Built on an early-’90s production aesthetic, the album collides moments of fragile introspection with massive, crushing walls of guitar. Drenched in dense layers of reverb and chorus, it stands as a slow-burning wall of sound tailor-made for fans of bleak, immersive atmospheres.

The album comprises of 9 songs for 43 minutes of music. Dreamless Water (the title track) starts the album in a very atmospherical way, with calm vocals and a relaxed but dark arpeggio. The music becomes very intense towards the middle but the interesting aspect is that the vocals remain calm. A very interesting and peculiar contrast. The following Still Circling Downwards features a fantastic and dynamic rhythm section combined with classy guitars (check out the fantastic solo section) and shoegaze vocals.

The third track Between Future and Shadows is uptempo and energetic, with 90s alternative rock vibes, with a very intense bridge, in the middle of the song and Caged Liberty keeps that direction with a frantic drumming, synths, inspired bass lines and heavy riffs, until an unexpected change in the middle of the song, with some Pink Floyd vibes. This was released as a single and it's my favourite track on the album, if I have to choose one. Check it out on the video below.

Among other songs on the album, I like the melancholy mood of Hum of Nothing (the longest track with its 7.30 minutes), the rhythm section of Fractured Calm (the bass sound fantastic!) and the intensity of the final track Across the Bridge of Echoes.

Dreamless Water is a very interesting album, combining lots of influences and styles flawlessly. Also amazingly performed and produced.
