Mark Tipple, a documentary photographer from Australia, has an ongoing project to shoot amazing photographs underwater. 2012 marks his third year of the Underwater Project. The images are stunning to say the least. From Mark’s site:

As the principal photographer of The Underwater Project; an ongoing reportage showcasing Australia’s relationship with the ocean, Mark aims to connect the different areas of his work to bring light to stories traditional media shies away from.

A gorgeous illustration of a conductor’s gestures. I’ll be honest, when I first saw this I thought, “when’s the next Tron coming out?” I’ve seen a lot of data visualization in my days, but this is by far one of the more creative ones I’ve seen, breaking down The Conductor’s hand gestures through a performance.

From the artist:

He defines the rhythm and the melody by his hand movements. He draws an abstract creation in the air with his hands with the goal of communication and that is how he becomes the composition visually and formally in the end. This way he creates a fusion between musician, artist and designer.

Quite simply one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Suren Manvelyan has been an avid photographer since his teens in the late 80′s early 90′s, and in 2006 he went professional.

From his bio:

In parallel to photography, for the past ten years Suren has also enjoyed teaching physics, mathematics, projective geometry and astronomy at the Yerevan Waldorf School. From 1997 to 2011 he served as a scientific researcher at the Institute for Physical Research of National Academy of Sciences.

Suren received his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the Yerevan State University in 2001 where his research focused on Quantum Chaos. He received the President Award of the Republic of Armenia (the) next year for his research work in the field of quantum technologies.

Pretty impressive. ‘Your Beautiful Eyes’ has been featured in a plethora of publications, and rightly so. He has a similar gallery featuring animal eyes, but this gallery is far superior. Be sure to check out his other work, particularly his Rainy Day series.

In our quest to find the most remote and interesting places on earth, we came across Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland with a population under 500.

From Wikipedia:

Ittoqqortoormiit was founded in 1925 by Ejnar Mikkelsen and some 80 Inuit settlers (70 persons from Tasiilaq and four families from western Greenland). They were brought on the ship Gustav Holm and settled 400 km south of the last known Inuit settlement in northeastern Greenland

The houses in this small town are literally picture perfect.

Getting to Ittoqqortoormiit is not exactly easy. According to East Greenland’s website you can only get there by air. All three airlines listed there are Icelandic airlines, however after a few searches we couldn’t find a single flight (not even from Greenland’s capital, Nuuk). According to Wikipedia, ” it is served by Ittoqqortoormiit Heliport, with Air Greenland helicopters shuttling passengers between the settlement and Nerlerit Inaat Airport, the latter also reachable by boat for a few months a year”… Good luck.

Every video and set of photographs that Willy posts are nothing short of breathtaking. His new set, ‘eeerry days lost in Berlin’ doesn’t disappoint.

Berlin is an amazing city, so much history crammed into such a small area..Most of it is so recent its hard not to feel a little uneasy. We managed to jam about 10 years of study into our 3 days there. To be honest we didn’t even really scratch the surface.

I was lucky to have visited Berlin for about a week back in 2006 and it really is one of my favorite cities. Willy is right, so much history packed in such a small place; World Wars, Check Point Charlie and the wall, the memorials. If you ever have the chance for a layover here, do it.

I recently visited Gold Bug in Pasadena, CA where they have an over abundance of strange and gorgeous hand-made art and accessories. Snooping around I found this amazing North Star Compass made by Authentic Models.

What I like most about this compass is the weight. It pretty heavy for an object of its size. It also feels thick and very well put together. The inner print and design is beautiful. I currently use it as a desk decorative piece, but measuring only 2.5″ in diameter it’s an easy accessory to cary.

Inner text:

The compass opened the world to exploration and discovery. Invented in China thousands of years ago, it was primarily used by fang-shui priests, hired to advise on how and where to build. Today the compass still is a basic tool, a magnetized needle rotating on a vertical pin, pointing at the Easth’s magnetic North. 16th century sailors accustomed to following coastlines, could suddenly cross oceans. Sailors now devised a compass course, while still using their age-old knowledge of steering by fixed stars, ocean currents and prevailing winds to establish position.

Just found this awesome book from the 50′s written by Ann and Paul Rand. The illustrations range from collage to pencil and every page is insanely unique.

From Amazon:

Through harmony and rhythm, resonance and pitch, Ann Rand inspires readers to listen to the tuneful play of her text as it sings off each page. Illustrated with graphic designer Paul Rand’s colorful, witty artwork, Sparkle and Spin is a children’s classic (now happily available again through Chronicle Books) that reveals to young readers the power and music in the words they use every day.

Months ago I set out to completely redesign and revamp Gjunkie. I wanted to not only come up with a new look, but also with a responsive layout and iPad/Mobile specific themes. This is what I came up with.

The first thing I attempted was to make the site as modular as possible. This is definitely something I still need to polish, but it worked out pretty well. Making the site modular (as much as possible) was immensely helpful in building a responsive layout, and way speedier to finish overall.

Desktop

I’m using media queries, of course, to style the site in different ways based on your browser window’s width. Go ahead, resize your window! Here are some samples of what you should see at every stage:

You’ll also notice that if there are any videos on the page while you made the window smaller, the video will be replaced by its screen cap.

iPhone and Mobile

Typically, responsive layouts are great for mobile design. However, the issue that you’ll always run into is that even though your layout is properly loaded on a mobile browser, the full sized images are still being loaded. This is really slow. So what I wanted to do was to load different content altogether if a user is on a mobile device.

The easiest way to do this is by detecting the browser’s user agent. It’s not an end all solution by any means, but it works quite well. Using PHP I’m looking for three things; Mobile, iPad, and iPhone. Now, all three of these have “Mobile” in their user agents, but I also want to be able to sniff out iPhones and iPads specifically. Here’s what Gjunkie looks like on an iPad:

Rather than displaying full sized posts on the home page, as well as the archives, I’m displaying a wall of thumbnails. Additionally, if a user is on an iPad or mobile phone, I load a small bit of javascript that allows you to tap a thumbnail to see an overlay of its title. On a desktop browser I do this with CSS3.

Finally, the iPhone/Mobile version of the site looks like this:

There are still plenty of things for me to work on. Particularly, Internet Explorer support. It’s basically not here unless you have IE9. Also, broader mobile support for screens of lower resolution.

I don’t typically like the idea of adding bluetooth keyboards to iPads or making them look like iPads because I think it defeats the purpose of an iPad. But these are awesome.

This is truly amazing. Never mind the fact that graphic designer and creative coder Frederic Brodbeck used the best movies ever made for this example, this is one of the most creative ways to see films I’ve ever encountered.

The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia has created this amazing self sustaining house. It sports a layer of solar panels on its roof which feed power to a battery on its underbelly. That energy can then be used, saved, or shared. The house is selling for €45,000 plus VAT ($64,000).

The house’s control system is designed to provide detailed real-time monitoring of its behavior and its interaction with the environment, creating historical profiles and sharing these socially.

The company produces and sells a range of solar homes of sizes from 12 square meters to 96 square meters. Watch a video of the building process at the bottom of this clipping.

An online shop of awesome animal doodles run by Stacie out of Springdale, Arkansas. Her art is both beautiful and original.

Gingiber is my online shop, where I create darling doodles for quirky kids (although I find that many adults enjoy my art as well). My work has been described as whimsical and expressive, but I like to think of it as having a touch of “POW” and a splash of “ZIPPA-D-DOO”. By the way, Gingiber is the Latin word for “ginger”. I just liked the sound of it.

This fantastic company in Texas will inspire you to build something with your hands and live within your means. They build small houses with a Pure Salvage Building concept, which is construction from 99% salvaged material.

That means that everything from the doors, floors, windows, lumber, porch posts, glass, door hardware, and even the siding has been saved and re-used to create houses that we hope will last for a century or more.

This particular house is 336 sq. ft. and is occupied by a young couple in their 20′s and their 3 year old son. It’s got a bedroom in each loft upstairs, a full kitchen, bathroom, and so much more.

John Frame, a Southern Californian, started making sculptures in the early 1980′s. Since then, his work has traveled the world to places like Europe, Japan, and Taiwan. Not only does he sculpt amazing pieces, he creates short stop-motion films and produces his own music. I was lucky to go check out his exhibit at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, CA, and what I saw was amazing. The film, In Medias Res, is not yet complete. You can watch what he’s got so far. The stills below are from the film.

Frame has been artist in residence, visiting artist, or guest lecturer at more than 50 museums, universities, and art-related institutions around the United States. He has also taught at the University of California at Los Angeles, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and at the Claremont Graduate University. He lives and works in Wrightwood, California.

The biggest challenge was cloudy nights and the wind. There were very few nights, when I could shoot, that were perfectly clear, and often the wind was blowing 25mph +. That made it hard to get the shots I wanted. I kept most of the shots low to the ground, so the wind wouldn’t catch the setup and cause camera shake, or blow it over.

There’s a lot of artwork out there most as posters, lithographs or prints so I wanted to do something different. While watching The original Star wars I realized that talk of money is thrown around quite a lot but you never actually see it (other than Han flipping the bartender a coin after shooting Greedo). I thought it would be cool to design a piece of Imperial currency as I saw it. I designed it mostly after American money but used some European influences as well.

It is probably no coincidence that around age ten I had a large, elaborate model train layout that my father built for my brother and me. Everything about it was meticulously detailed. Especially with this train set, there was an infinite number of people, cars and buildings one could arrange on the landscape of a perfect little world.

The Immersive Cocoon is a future concept study by Tino Schaedler with design collective NAU; an idea to push the envelope and provoke a new conception and evolution of computer interaction.

I’m a huge Stanley Kubrick fan, and this beautiful teaser pays homage to his masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. The teaser actually features Keir Dullea, which makes the whole experience that much more amazing. But what is the Immersive Cocoon? From their website:

Imagine a digital experience that is intuitive and holistic, where your interface is not reduced to a mouse click and two-dimensional analog of a writing desk. A surround display dome complemented by the sophisticated motion-sensing software that inspired the technology depicted in the film ‘Minority Report’. With natural, intuitive movements, your entire body becomes the interface.

Check out some of the behind the scenes shots. There are a ton more over at their website.

One of the coolest looking helmets I’ve seen in a long time. The Optofonica Capsule is a futuristic design/architectural object, featuring a mechanized structure whose parts form an autonomous immersive audiovisual environment. The shell-like shape of the capsule envelopes the body of the visitor to optimize the experience of Surround and Tactile Sound. Low frequencies are fed through a specially constructed floor, directly into the bone system of the human body, thereby converting the sound into hyper-perceivable vibration.

The capsule was built and designed by Maurizio Martinucci, an Italian interdisciplinary artist and producer currently working in Amsterdam. He uses technology as a means to explore perceptual effects and the relationship between sound, light and space. He focuses primarily on generative compositions with spatialized sound for live performances and installations.

I would love to have one of these in my living room.

Do you see all the little tails that each piece of cardboard has attached to them? Those all spin at a continuous speed making it sound like it’s raining. The piece features 200 DC motors and 2000 cardboard elements. The total dimensions are 49.2 x 29.5 x 14.7 ft. Check out the video to see it in action.

Pe Lang is one of the most creative people I’ve seen in a very long time. He creates wonderful machines that do the coolest things. This particular machine places 441 water drops ø3.3 mm arranged on omniphobic material. From Pe Lang’s biography:

Pe Lang’s poetic and elegant hand built sculptures combine mechanized systems with new materials to mandate and manifest a different approach to kinetic movement.

Check out this awesome machine in action over at his website.

What can pliers, microchips and a bit of soldering get you? The happiest machine ever built. Physalia is a motion-graphics and visual effects studio based in Barcelona. They bought themselves a cheap, used electromagnet, filled plastic balls with some crazy, black magic microchips, and came up with this. Watch how the plastic balls float in mid-air as if they were in water. Insane.

Henry Jun Wah Lee has shot a stunning collection of short films. This one was shot over the 2011 New Year’s weekend. The footage he captured is nothing short of breathtaking.

Shot over the 2011 New Year weekend when a winter storm arrived in Yosemite. Overcast skies the first day, followed by heavy snow on the second day, partly cloudy the third day and sunny the fourth day. You’ll see a mixture of shots from the different weather conditions.

Of course it doesn’t hurt that his choice of soundtrack happens to be one of my favorites; Xibalba by Clint Mansell from The Fountain.
