BART GOT A ROOM, the 2008 laugh-out-loud film festival favorite, comes to DVD on July 28, 2009 from Anchor Bay Entertainment (pre-book June 25). Written and directed by Brian Hecker, the offbeat comedy stars William H. Macy (Wild Hogs, Magnolia), Cheryl Hines (Waitress, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Jennifer Tilly (“Family Guy,” Bullets Over Broadway), Alia Shawkat (the upcoming Whip It!), and newcomer Steven Kaplan as the film’s centerpiece character, Danny Stein. BART GOT A ROOM also features YouTube sensation, Brandon Hardesty. SRP is $29.98 for the DVD.

BART GOT A ROOM debuted at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival to sold-out shows and critical acclaim.  Most recently, the film received the Best New Filmmaker Award at the 2008 Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival and the Best Fiction Film Award at the 2008 Asheville Film Festival.

Nerdy high school senior Danny (Steven Kaplan) has spent six hundred bucks on the hotel room, the limo, and the tux for his prom.  He’s only missing one thing—the girl.  Hampered by well-intentioned but clueless advice from his newly-divorced parents (William H. Macy, Cheryl Hines) and unsympathetic mocking from his best friends (Brandon Hardesty, Alia Shawkat), Danny battles peer pressure, teen angst, and his own raging hormones as he desperately searches for a prom date.  “What other evening in your life is as big?  Maybe your wedding night, but odds are that’s gonna end in divorce anyway,” muses Danny’s friend Craig as the two pals lounge poolside in the decidedly unhip retirement community town they call home.

Danny’s luckless quest turns to panic when he learns that even Bart—the school’s biggest dweeb—has secured not only a date, but also a hotel room for the night.

We’ve spent the past eleven years following Harry Potter’s life in text, and in the past eight, we’ve seen the characters coming to life and growing up on screen—and growing up really is the key phrase when it comes to the latest magic-filled film to hit the theaters (at precisely 12:01 AM on July 15th), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  The actors are older and more skilled (and still quite attractive), but it’s more than just that. What was once a fantastical children’s series dealing with witches and wizards, friendship, and the forces of good and evil has matured into something darker and more complex.

Given the heavy nature of the content, the Half-Blood Prince does a marvelous job balancing comedy with coming-of-age, light-heartedness with loss. There were moments when the whole theater was roaring with laughter—at others, the entire audience seemed to be collectively (and anxiously) holding their breath. The actors, young and old, appeared to have genuinely enjoyed themselves while filming, which can be credited as much to them as to director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves. In short, things have progressed beyond a mere adaptation of a beloved book—the movie has taken on a personality and a life of its own.

Similarly, the movie’s plot has also deviated more from its corresponding book than did the previous films in the series. While some of the novels’ devotees may find this upsetting (or at least kind of annoying), it also means that the Half-Blood Prince can hold its own as a movie with a story rather than a movie retelling a story. The film adaptation doesn’t follow the text to the letter, but the changes not only allow movie goers (particularly those who haven’t read the book) to understand what’s going on, but they also set the tone and create the atmosphere as effectively as pages and pages of descriptive text.

The characters, too, are growing up, and it’s amusing to watch the young wizards and witches struggle to deal with puppy love and infatuation (with less dexterity and confidence than when they face Death Eaters). As far as the awkward romantic sub-plots go, they’re just that—supremely awkward. On the other hand, it’s another context in which the much-loved characters are maturing, and truthfully, all young crushes and relationships are awkward, whether they’re within the magical realm or the Muggle world.

So what’s our verdict? Go! At the very least, you’ll get a good laugh seeing Loony Luna Lovegood in her psychedelic shades.

Broken Embraces stars Penélope Cruz and is directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Broken Embraces will open in New York on November 20th, 2009 and in Los Angeles on December 11th.

A man writes, lives and loves in darkness. Fourteen years before, he was in a brutal car crash on the island of Lanzarote. In the accident, he not only lost his sight, he also lost Lena, the love of his life.

This man uses two names: Harry Caine, a playful pseudonym with which he signs his literary works, stories and scripts, and Mateo Blanco, his real name, with which he lives and signs the film he directs. After the accident, Mateo Blanco reduces himself to his pseudonym, Harry Caine. If he can’t direct films he can only survive with the idea that Mateo Blanco died on Lanzarote with his beloved Lena.

In the present day, Harry Caine lives thanks to the scripts he writes and to the help he gets from his faithful former production manager, Judit García, and from Diego, her son, his secretary, typist and guide.

Since he decided to live and tell stories, Harry is an active, attractive blind man who has developed all his other senses in order to enjoy life, on a basis of irony and self-induced amnesia. He has erased from his biography any trace of his first identity, Mateo Blanco.
One night Diego has an accident and Harry takes care of him (his mother, Judit, is out of Madrid and they decide not to tell her anything so as not to alarm her). During the first nights of his convalescence, Diego asks him about the time when he answered to the name of Mateo Blanco, after a moment of astonishment Harry can’t refuse and he tells Diego what happened fourteen years before with the idea of entertaining him, just as a father tells his little child a story so that he’ll fall asleep.

The story of Mateo, Lena, Judit and Ernesto Martel is a story of “amour fou”, dominated by fatality, jealously, the abuse of power, treachery and a guilt complex. A moving and terrible story, the most expressive image of which is the photo of two lovers embracing, torn into a thousand pieces.

Who wants to be a contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Here’s how to apply for the highly-anticipated 10th anniversary edition hosted by Regis Philbin and running for 11 nights in August, Sundays-Thursdays at (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) from August 9 to August 23 on the ABC.

There are multiple ways to become a contestant on Millionaire, including the original phone game that was used when the show premiered in 1999 and video submissions — an all-new method that will enable people to upload videos of themselves directly to the show’s producers. Would-be contestants can use more than one method to try to get on the show but will only be selected one time. No former “Hot Seat” players are eligible, and you must be at least 18 years old, a legal U.S. resident and meet all eligibility requirements.

Call the 800 number and attempt to answer general knowledge questions by putting the 4 answer choices in correct order.  People who correctly answer all 5 questions will select one of the 6 available tape dates.  A random drawing will be held from among all the people who selected the same tape date to receive an eligibility call to qualify to become a finalist on the program. If a person meets all eligibility requirements they will be flown to New York City with a companion for the opportunity for the chance to play in the hot seat.

Producer will select from among those who received a passing score on the online test to receive an Eligibility Call to qualify to become a finalist on the program. If a person meets all eligibility requirements they will be flown to New York City with a companion for the opportunity for the chance to play in the hot seat. REGIONAL AUDITIONS
Millionaire producers hit the road during the month of June to conduct contestant auditions in Nashville, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Tampa and Kansas City, Missouri.  Auditions will also be held in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, July 1. No advance sign up is required for road auditions but space is limited, people are seen on a first-come, first-served basis and not all people may be seen. Capitalism: A Love Story is the newly unveiled title of Oscar-winner Michael Moore’s latest documentary feature.  Overture Films will release the film domestically on October 2, 2009, and Paramount Vantage will handle international distribution.  As previously announced, Moore will return to the issue that began his career: the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world.

On why he chose to make a ‘love story,’ Moore stated that it was time for him to make a ‘relationship movie.’  “It will be the perfect date movie,” said Moore. “It’s got it all — lust, passion, romance, and 14,000 jobs being eliminated every day.  It’s a forbidden love, one that dare not speak its name.  Heck, let’s just say it: It’s Capitalism.”

The woman who created an imaginary world for millions, Rowling allowed cameras extraordinary access during the year before the seventh Harry Potter book was published. From the one-bedroom apartment in Scotland where it all began to a hotel room where viewers watch her type the last words of the Potter saga, Rowling lets millions of fans into her world. The documentary exposes her childhood sorrows, visits the church where she and her sister worked after-school as janitors, and allows people to see her now as both the queen of a magical, alternate universe, and an everyday mom. Cameras also travel back to her hometown and discover where many of the characters of Harry Potter originated. Elizabeth Vargas takes viewers on a journey into the life of the woman who came from “nothing” and created all of her own success.
