Blogger Hack: How To Remove Banner Border (for Courtney)

Courtney from BeautyandtheBride just installed my 3 Column Minima (Wide) template and had the following question:

I am in the midst of uploading the Minima wide three column template you created for blogger (Thank you!) and have a question. I have a banner/image that I would like to install on my blog. In the fonts and colors area I clicked on the border color to white, so there would not be any lines around my image, but one gray line still remains. Is there any way to get the gray line out from around my image? Thank you again for a cool template! ~ Courtney

OK, Courtney. This is pretty simple and I'm going to break it down in 4 easy-peasy steps. If you need more clarity simply click on images to embiggen.

First, let's establish our goal: we want to remove the double border around the top banner. See the "before" and "after" photos below.

This is pretty cinchy! Here we go:

First of all, head to your Blogger dashboard and go to Layout → Fonts and Colors (see above).

In the colors box on the left scroll down to "Border Color" and change the border from "Pink" to "White". (See above).

Then hit "Save Changes".

In some templates this should do the trick. But Blogger is funny and sometimes there's a little code monkey running around in your code that will only allow you to remove just one border outline (not both). I don't know how it got there and I don't know how to get rid of it. However, I can tell you how to remove the second border. But I have to tell you now: you're gonna have to go into the HTML code. But don't panic! We can do this! Here we go:

Go to Layout → Edit HTML (see above)

Scroll down until you see the following code:

#header-wrapper {
width: 1000px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid #cccccc; ← CHANGE THIS VALUE
}

Change the part where the hexidecimal color code* (aka HEX) says #cccccc (gray) to #ffffff (white). (See above).

#header-wrapper {
width: 1000px;
margin:0 auto 10px;
border:1px solid #ffffff; ← TO THIS VALUE
}

And voila! The color is now white, blending in with the background of your template. (See above).

Hit "Save Changes" and you're good to go!

OK all you crafty vixens. I think you're gonna like what I've got to blog about. Because today it's all about Aviary, an on-line multi-media suite that allows anyone to create, edit, and remix digital content directly from their favorite web browser.

Each application on Aviary is named after a bird (hence the name) with programs such as Phoenix (an on-line image editor that's comparable to PhotoShop), Peacock (an effects editor/pre-visual laboratory), Toucan (a color swatches and palettes creator), Raven (a vector editor) and many more! The best part is Aviary is free as a bird!

The tutorials Aviary offers are a great place to start if you're new to this digital-techie-sorta-thing. I know it's been awhile since I've done a featured artist video so it was with a very happy enthusiasm that LuLu Kellogg from CoastalSisters.com commissioned me to make this piece featuring her latest collection of dark and nefarious art! It just love how goth it all is. Bua-ha-ha!

What's also cool is LuLu was unable to decide which piece of music to go with her video so she ordered two -- one for each piece of music. Murakami's Short Film "Akihabara Majokko Princess" with Kirsten Dunst

This fabulous video of Kirsten Dunst performing a cover of "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors was part of the Tate Gallery’s “Pop Life” exhibit by Takashi Murakami, an artist and author who’s explored the otaku phenomenon. He also produced this video. Click on the image on the left for details from the exhibit's pamphlet. Note: This is video is a 95 mb size file. Please be patient.

A week ago I repeatedly attempted to post this this video on my Tumblog but every time I found a live link it got pulled. It looks like the version above is self-hosted by the site that's allowing it to be shared. There's also a high quality copy that you can download here. This video is for mature audiences. While there's nothing really super explicitly pornographic I feel it's worth mentioning that there are some topless anime/manga cartoon characters in the opening sequence. They're hand drawn, not photos. That short bit is certainly NSFW nor appropriate for kids. But for those of you ready to risk enchantment, I think you will find this video epic! I sure did!

I just read that my friend Susie from 1stFloorFlat is mighty pretty in pink when she blogged she's all clear from a recent breast cancer screening procedure. Go, Susie!

As it so happens, my paternal grandmother passed away from breast cancer although at the time of her death also she suffered from the ravages of Alzheimer's. She was highly combative during the course of her struggle with this horrific disease and so her breast cancer went undetected until it was too late.

In memory of my grandmother and in support of Susie I extracted this clip of Kay Thompson's performance of "Think Pink" from the film "Funny Face" starring Audrey Hepburn with Fred Astaire and directed by Stanley Donen.

Today I went traipsing into my local Tandy Leather store because I'm ~~working~~ experimenting on a top secret crafty project. If it works, I can't wait to show it to you here. But if fails I'd rather not share it with you my lameness so...let's pretend we never had this conversation, mkay?

Moving forward....

Like I said, I was at my local Tandy Leather store and as I was leaving this super gorgeous 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe' parked right next to me. At first I was kinda of embarrassed to go over and ask the driver if I could take some photos, but I thought to myself: "Anybody who drives an exotic car like that had better be used to getting a lot of attention."

So I just screwed up my courage and asked him: "Dude, do you mind if I take pictures of your car?" He was super cool and said "Yes!" with a smile. He then opened up the hood for me to take a look. The photos I've featured in this video can be seen on Flickr here.

Turns out, the guy is porn star (::blush::) Jack Lawrence! With a little bit more research I learned that not only can he do donuts in a parking lot, but he used to bake donuts for a living. In fact, that was his very first job! Su-weet!

Jack, if you're reading this: thanks for showing me your hot rod! ☺

Vermont for Valentine's!

Here's some photos I took from my week in Vermont visiting with my friends Simone and Seano. If you're a fan of my other blog, you'll remember them from a piece I did for an interactive art project they created entitled "Green Shoes" for Burning Man '07. It was a ginormous piece that a crew of at least a dozen volunteers including me came together to help them build a few years back.

Well, I ended up celebrating my birfday and Valentine's day with Simone and Seano this year due to another interactive art installation that Seano had received some grant monies for. The idea was that I would act as a courier for several pieces of audio/video equipment that I picked up in L.A. on Craigslist for a super duper deal. It worked out that the cost of my ticket pretty much evened out with what it would have cost to ship these items alone across the country so this was a total win/win.

Both Simone and Seano were super busy during my stay. Simone is a full-time student at Dartmouth and Seano is a freelance graphic designer with several jobs lined up. But that didn't stop us from good times! Thanks to my SAG membership I brought with me a stack of award nominated dvd's to watch which we did so almost every night. And practically every morning was an amazing breakfast cooked up by Seano and/or Simone. I made my famous Broccoli Obama pie (or reasonable facsimiles of it) two nights in a row!

The night before Valentine's we had a DJ music slam where we took turns responding to love songs with other love songs while making hand-made valentines. Then for V-day Simone's classmates came over to swap secret valentines (think Secret Santa). We also held a screening of "Inglorious Basterds" . Yes, it was the perfect non-Valentine movie!

Throughout the duration of my visit, every day was like Valentine's: full of love, joy and friendship. My deepest thanks to Simone and Seano for making my birthday festival so marvelous!

Dartmouth's Winter Carnival Polar Swim

This week was my birthday and what better way to spend it than with my friends in Vermont. On Friday we took a jump in the lake at Dartmouth's Winter Carnival Polar Plunge which has been described by the school's newspaper as a "pseudospontaneous event" in which participants leap into a large, rectangular opening cut into the pond with chainsaws that measures 10' wide by 20' long. There was a two hour wait and when we finally got closer to the head of the line I thought it would be better to put away my film equipment and just do it. This video is about the before and after.

I'm going to be gone for a week. They say Vermont is for lovers and while I don't have a Valentine, I do know two really cool people there who love each other. The husband is an artist and his wife is a getting her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Dartmouth. Together they're gonna teach me how to snowboard for my very first time! Woo hoo! So maybe I'll meet somebody suave and debonair like Cary Grant on the slopes! (Fingers crossed!)

This is a rough edit of what I thought of Apple's new iPad that was announced yesterday. In my rush to post, I failed to smooth out the audio. I know it sounds funny at some point, but oh well.

Basically, in a nutshell: I want an iPad! Oh yes, I do! But I think it's a glorified iPhone but it doesn't make phone calls. It's not Apple's answer to the netbook. At least, not yet. Maybe as it evolves.

Conan O'Brien wrapped up his final "Tonight Show" episode with these heartfelt words. Below is the speech in its entirety. It's the last sentence that will leave an indelible impression of what a class act Conan is.

"Before we end this rodeo, a few things need to be said. There has been a lot of speculation in the press about what I legally can and can't say about NBC. To set the record straight, tonight I am allowed to say anything I want. And what I want to say is this: between my time at Saturday Night Live, The Late Night Show, and my brief run here on The Tonight Show, I have worked with NBC for over twenty years. Yes, we have our differences right now and yes, we're going to go our separate ways. But this company has been my home for most of my adult life. I am enormously proud of the work we have done together, and I want to thank NBC for making it all possible.

Walking away from The Tonight Show is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Making this choice has been enormously difficult. This is the best job in the world, I absolutely love doing it, and I have the best staff and crew in the history of the medium. But despite this sense of loss, I really feel this should be a happy moment. Every comedian dreams of hosting The Tonight Show and, for seven months, I got to. I did it my way, with people I love, and I do not regret a second. I've had more good fortune than anyone I know and if our next gig is doing a show in a 7-11 parking lot, we'll find a way to make it fun.

And finally, I have to say something to our fans. The massive outpouring of support and passion from so many people has been overwhelming. The rallies, the signs, all the goofy, outrageous creativity on the internet, and the fact that people have traveled long distances and camped out all night in the pouring rain to be in our audience, made a sad situation joyous and inspirational.

To all the people watching, I can never thank you enough for your kindness to me and I'll think about it for the rest of my life. All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.

A few days after I got back from the Bahamas my laptop took a big dump and had to be looked at. As a result I lost all photos that I had just transferred to my hard drive including all my cool photos from my day trip to Nassau. I saw some really awesome graffiti art there and it's all gone now. :(

The good news was: I still had footage from my Flip and some shots on my iPhone. Oh, and I kinda stole some photos from the gals I worked with. I hope when they see this, they'll be happy. I think this is a really cute video!

Ukulele Underground's Huntington Beach Jam

It was a super wet rainy day for a meet up with Aldrine Guerrero from Ukulele Underground who's here in SoCal to attend NAMM. Since I don't play the uke (and have no plans to) I thought I'd just come to see his live show on Tuesday at DiPiazza's in Long Beach. But then I saw that there was going to be meet up and since it was MLK Day which meant I was free I was like, well why not go? Eddie would! :)

At first I hesitated 'cuz like I said, I don't know how to play. But I could tell from the website and fanbase that Aldrine's got a tight and friendly community so I thought why not? I'll go, take some video and see what happens. So I shot this footage and came home to edit only to find that my Internet is down. Now here I am throwing all together in the blender of my local coffee house because I really want to spread the word about tomorrow's show. If you're in Long Beach tomorrow night come join me not only to see Aldrine play but all the lovely people I met today. Hope to see you there!

I'm Back!

Yesterday was a travel day for me as I flew home from my adventures in the Caribbean. Google was offering free wifi on my layover at Fort Lauderdale and Virgin offered free wifi in-flight! While I blogged a bit to do my part to promote volunteering on behalf of the Haitian plight I mostly vegged.

Now I've got lots of photos and vids from my trip so I'm going to have to make time at some point to organize those. But for the moment I want to share this silly video I made while waiting for my connecting flight in Fort Lauderdale. A friend and turned me on to site called TagGalaxy.de in which you type in a tag and then it generates this "planet" of photos on Flickr that have been tagged with the same. It's fun and interactive so if you're bored hanging out an airport, I recommend checking it out.

I don't know when I'm going to get back to regular blogging yet. I got to get settled back in and take care of business, but I'm back and while I had a really great time I'm really happy to be home!

Person Finder: Haiti Earthquake

As many of you may know, I spent the last two weeks in the Caribbean working a gig at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, which is 887 kilometers/551 miles/479 nautical miles South/East of Haiti. I was on the job in the casino when the hotel management advised that everybody on the premises stay inside due to a tsunami alert. I had no idea what would cause such an announcement so at my earliest convenience I Facebooked and asked my network what happened. Seconds later I was apprised of the horrible catastrophe that had struck the people of Haiti.

It was a rather surreal juxtaposition to be amidst a world of high roller gambling and family vacationing when others were suffering but at the time there was not much more I could do but complete my assignment. Now the gig is over and at this time I am free to assist and volunteer in any capacity to the people of Haiti although I realize that the situation there is chaotic and somebody with my skills would be more of a hindrance than help. When I return home I am going to roll up my sleeves once again and volunteer at the American Red Cross. I know everybody is donating money to the Haitian cause but may I gently urge you all to put your money where your mouth is and volunteer in some capacity to a charity of your choice.

Has anybody missed me? No? Oh well...boo!

December is turning out to be a crazy month as I prepare to close up my real-life business in here Los Angeles. Unfortunately it has become the poster child for the new economy so I've got to downsize things a bit and find myself a real job! Then of course, it's the holidays so there's family to see, parties to go to. So yeah... my dance card is getting chockerblock and I haven't had a moment for blogging.

Funnily enough, the day I gave notice to my landlord an amazing opportunity to travel for work has come up beginning the day after New Year's. It's a two week stint so it looks like my blogging ambitions won't be back on schedule until mid-January.

I was hoping that I'd at least have the newest video portfolio of my latest contest winner to post on this blog but alas, poor girl, her laptop died and along with it all her images of her art work and then some.

Featured Artist: Tammy Sprinkle + New Contest!

Today's featured artist is Tammy Sprinkle, a wonderfully talented mixed media artist and photographer that creates wedding guest books, custom journals, keepsake boxes, jewelry and pendants. Tammy especially loves to do custom work, hence her Etsy shop is entitled "Design4U".

I get the feeling that if I ever met Tammy in person we would really hit it off. She's got a warm and bubbly personality that comes through in her blog. Not only that, we have so many things in common not the least of which is being fans of the color "red", loving a good cup of coffee, meeting new bloggers and of course: art, art, art and more art!

Tammy also appears to have an affinity for birds as evidenced in her work and well, as matter of fact so do I! Hummingbirds to be exact. Anyway, I really enjoyed working on her video and got so inspired by all the sweet birds flitting throughout her work that I found a free birdie giveaway from MyGrafico.com that I want to share.
