“Briggen wore a Gahlia Lahav dress purchased from Anjolique Bridal in Cornelius, North Carolina. The style was G-203. The dress had to be shipped in from Israel for me to try on because it was no longer being sold in stores or as part of the Gahlia Lahav trunk show, but I knew I had to try it on when I saw it. It ended up being the one!”

“When planning our wedding, I knew I wanted something classic that I would look back on and love for years. I also knew I wanted there to be elements of things I loved, fairy tales, reading, and whimsical romance. I had always wanted a spring wedding, and I wanted a fairly neutral color palette.”

“We went with white and green as our primary colors, and a light pink and gold for our accent colors. I even wore a gold crown to tie into the colors and to keep the whimsical, fairytale energy! I built an entire vision board in Canva to get the vision to reality, which I would be happy to share!”

“It is so hard to pick any of the favorite details – we worked so hard with our vendors to curate the event, and it is all our favorite! We had a choreographed dance to Austin Giorgio’s “You Put a Spell on Me” which we loved, we had a “Spicy ‘Mango’ Margarita” as one of our signature drinks for our dog, Mango, we had handmade resin bookmarks as our favors for our guests, my crown was one I had used previously in a cosplay of one of my favorite book characters – the list goes on and on!”

“One thing that stuck out to us both was how much fun we had dancing with our friends and family! The energy was incredible, and it was so much fun to see everyone reveling in the party we spent so long planning and sharing in the love we have for each other. The first time I cried that day was seeing our reception space laid out and set up – it was incredible seeing the vision come to life, and I will never forget that feeling of relief, gratefulness, and joy. Our first dance was incredible, and our last dance was just the two of us in the reception space. It was so special to have that moment to close out our night in such a peaceful way where we could focus on each other.”

It was a very emotional day filled with so much laughter and tears at every corner. It also had detachable, draped sleeves, so I was able to have two looks wearing it! Before I went dress shopping, I knew that I did not want a ballgown dress, and that’s exactly what I ended up with… It sounds very cliché, but I just knew that the dress was for me once I put it on!”

“My dad was our officiant, which was very special!”

“A design detail that was really close to my heart was honoring the women on both sides of our families. Pat and I both come from amazing, strong families, and I know the two of us would not be here today without them. We decided to display both of our mothers’ wedding dresses and one of my grandmother’s dresses on mannequins on the stairway. We also pinned a picture of each couple on their wedding day on the sides of the dress!”

“Get a good wedding planner!! Alex Bovee was truly amazing in all aspects, and she made the planning process so easy.”

“My favorite part of our wedding was our cake! I love to bake and cook, so I wanted something that would represent the love I have for creating in the kitchen on our wedding day. When I was brainstorming cake ideas, I thought of having a giant circular cake that Pat and I could decorate with berries and powdered sugar. The only downside to my big idea was that no bakery in Nashville would create a cake that size.

So, one of my family friends, Patricia Frawley, decided to create the massive cake on her own. She spent eight months trying out different recipes, cutting and building a board for the cake to sit on, and mapping out how the cake would all fit together. Having my idea come to life and knowing it was created by someone who means so much to me was definitely one of my favorite wedding day details.”

“We had such a combination of colors that were blended together so perfectly. We got married in the round, which was a first (and hopefully not last) for the venue!”

“We also had our escort wall be seed packets so guests could plant flowers when they got home, and we get the joy of seeing them bloom! Our cocktail hour had our string trio play Taylor Swift songs due to my love for her. We love to travel, and instead of a standard guest book we got a mailbox and Italy (our honeymoon destination) themed post cards that people could write, which will then be turned into a scrap book with honeymoon photos and memories.”

“I wore “The Violeta” designed by Lea Anne Belter, which I purchased at Gamberdella Bridal (the same place my mom got her dress, and it is owned by my childhood friend’s cousin). I only tried on 4 dresses. It was a stunning classic gown in off-white and embroidered flowers that were “Spun of sunlight and morning-glory embroidered tulle. “ I loved the spaghetti straps and the back that was a deep scoop with sheer sides, a few buttons, and a full skirt with a chapel train. I wore my sister’s veil and my mother’s earrings.”

“I have known Father Lou Bianco for a long time, since my youth group days. It was special to have him marry us. He shared some anecdotal stories and painted marriage in such a lovely way, and we were moved by his sermon. The readings were read by 2 of my dear friends from Camp Seafarer, and Dan’s brother did the prayer of the faithful.”

“The biggest inspiration to me was my parents’ property, it is just breathtaking and so unique. Since our wedding was in mid-October, we wanted our wedding to appreciate the beautiful foliage that surrounded my childhood home, embracing nature and the architecture. I drew inspiration from rich colors that embraced the shift from summer to fall- dusty rose, steel blue, sage green, and burnt oranges. My color palette also happened to match my childhood room. This created a warm, nostalgic vibe that felt both natural and personal.”

“Our signage to let guests know what table they were sitting at was so fun, another brilliant Lee idea. I love camp, I went to Camp Seafarer for years, and still work as a nurse during the summers. I wanted to incorporate camp somehow, and we opted to play a little on the long walk to the tent with our signage saying, “Welcome campers, let’s take a hike to dinner…” We had a little corner where we had photos of my grandparents and parents, nodding to the love that came before us!”

“The tent, oh the CLEAR TOP Tent! I was skeptical at first, but Lee never let me down! The tent allowed the surrounding nature to shine through, perfectly highlighting the color scheme inside. The clear top tent allowed nature to truly shine though. The night was clear as can be, falling a night or two after a full moon. We were truly “dancing in the moonlight.””

“I believe music is the backbone of any great party, and it was a priority for our wedding. My fondest memories of my childhood home are the late-night dance parties, a lot of which my bridesmaids were a part of, Christmas karaoke, and playing the guitar on the back patio. Both of our families grew up with music filling our homes as children! The music also had this lovely summer-to-fall transition feel as well.”

“It was important to us to honor both Madelon’s Catholic upbringing and Shalev’s Jewish heritage in our wedding. We had a Rabbi as our officiant, who helped us transform the iron arbor into a chuppah. Our ceremony included Catholic readings before we signed our Ketubah. We topped off our reception with the Horah and held on to our chairs for dear life!”

“Our flowers and table settings were some of our favorite details. We had a hanging installation in our reception tent that was nothing short of magical. Our centerpieces were whimsical arrangements of flowers with plates that echoed our floral motif.”

“One of the highlights of our night was dancing with our guests to Meghan Trainor’s, “Criminals.” We saw a show on Netflix where the cast did a choreographed dance to the song at a wedding and thought it was so cool. We wanted to bring awareness to the charity and use our wedding day as a way to donate a large sum of money to this charity. It spoke to both of us at a worship night that we attended at a church a few years ago, and it was very meaningful for us to incorporate it into our wedding day.”

“We had greenery hanging on the chandeliers and branches along the aisle that created a tunnel effect that made us feel as though we were walking through a garden. The table florals during the reception were large and extravagant and made our indoor garden wedding feel as though it turned into a party that you would see on ‘Bridgerton’.“

“We loved the reception first look so much that we just started dancing on the dance floor out of pure joy and happiness at how everything turned out. The shoot took place at the Shirley-Eustis House in Roxbury, a historic 1700s estate that carries the weight of stories of the enslaved. It was chosen intentionally to honor the many shared histories of cultural resistance and solidarity. Rather than leaning on red, a color often associated with Asian weddings, Arly chose green to symbolize prosperity, renewal, and rootedness. This palette expanded into soft shades of peach, yellow, and pink, redefining the standard of Asian beauty. The menu featured a traditional eight-course Vietnamese wedding meal, with each place setting anchored by bamboo flatware, symbolizing the resilience to bend but never break.

A Vietnamese watercolor artist hand-painted abstract umbrellas for the linens, which served as both art and metaphor: umbrellas shield, tear easily, and require the same tenderness and care as relationships and marriage. Florals included bitter melon vines and trailing green beans — culinary staples and bold visual elements meant to be seen, unapologetically.

Hire someone you’re comfortable with

Your photographer will be by your side for nearly every part of your wedding. That’s why it’s so important to find someone whose energy puts you at ease.

Mary Angelini, Owner of Key Moment Films, notes, “Your shooter’s personality is the one thing most couples overlook that makes a big difference to their experience and wedding images. You should take their presentation and personality into consideration. Weddings are the biggest family dinner you’ll ever host, and you want your photographer to be a good fit for everyone. If you wouldn’t feel comfortable having them at a family dinner, they are not the best fit for your wedding day.”

When you genuinely like and trust your photographer, it shows. You’ll feel more relaxed, and that comfort will translate into natural photos that capture your true selves.

Have an engagement session

Think of your engagement shoot as a low-pressure dress rehearsal for the big day. It’s a chance to get used to being in front of the camera and see how your photographer works.

“Book an engagement session and treat it like a warm-up, not a performance,” recommends Craig Peterman, Photographer & Videographer at Craig Peterman Photography & Videography. “You’ll figure out how your photographer talks you through movement, which side you prefer, and what actually feels natural when you’re together.”

“To be more comfortable on camera for your wedding, you should communicate your insecurities early,” suggests Sam Savat, Photographer at Sam Savat Photography. “We photographers can’t read minds… we might think that you have a really cute jaw, but that could be your biggest insecurity, so if there’s something you’re self-conscious about, tell your photographer before the wedding to avoid feeling that awkwardness when we ask you to do a certain pose.”

Bring along a speaker

Music can do wonders for your mood. Bringing a small speaker to your photo sessions can help set the tone and make you feel more comfortable.

McKenzi Taylor, Founder & Owner of Cactus Collective Weddings, shares, “One hack I like to use is to bring a portable speaker along during photo sessions. Music brings out emotions and adds energy to an otherwise lifeless moment, and can put a nervous couple at ease. Timid couples are sometimes able to vibe with the tunes rather than worrying about their camera shyness.”

Having music playing in the background also helps break the silence and gives you something else to focus on besides the camera. When you’re laughing and singing along, those candid moments come easily.

Move around

Stiff poses can make anyone feel awkward, so don’t be afraid to move! Movement brings life to your photos and helps you forget the camera is there.

“One useful approach is movement,” emphasizes Amos Gott, Chief Event Architect at AmosEvents. “Instead of holding a static pose, couples can walk slowly, turn toward each other, or interact naturally. This creates more candid frames and reduces stiffness.”

Your photographer will guide you through prompts that get genuine reactions, so trust the process. The more you move, the more relaxed and spontaneous your photos will look (and that’s where the magic happens!).

Focus on your partner

Your wedding photos are all about connection. So when the camera starts clicking, focus on your partner instead of the lens.

Nicole Back, Photographer at nicole&photo, says, “As simple as it sounds, remember to take a deep breath! Focus on your partner, and be present with them instead of having your eyes on the camera!”

“One of the best hacks couples can use is practicing poses together beforehand,” confirms Alicia Igess, Owner and Operator of Alicia Igess. “Spend time in front of a mirror or take practice photos to discover which angles and expressions feel most natural. This preparation helps eliminate awkwardness and allows you to relax and enjoy the moment when it truly counts.”

Practicing can also help you build confidence and shake off any camera jitters. By the time your wedding rolls around, posing will feel familiar, and you’ll be able to focus on the day instead of overthinking how you look.

Remember: you don’t have to perform

“I had warned John for years before getting engaged that I would not want a white dress. I think friends, family, and even John thought once we got engaged, I would change my mind, but I was steadfast in the idea that I wanted to get married in something blue or green. I don’t have a good reason for this, frankly, call it a gut feeling, or the whims of a moody creative, I have just never liked the color white and am pretty much always wearing all black, so a colorful dress would still be well outside my normal color palette. I realized quickly enough, though, that my dress set the tone for the color palette, so I needed to get it sorted quickly in order to start fleshing out ideas for our big day.”

“My mom and I began the hunt for a colorful wedding gown. We stood in her massive bathroom, carefully trying on dresses, and when she zipped me into the green one I wore on my wedding day, I instantly got emotional. It had the most beautiful floral embellishments and reminded me of the forest scenes from Sleeping Beauty. From there, I used colors from my dress to make a palette that Angie and I were working with: a myriad of greens, gold, black, and white. To keep it easy and not give too much away to our guests, I asked them all to wear black and/or white so that I would still stick out in my own way like a traditional bride in white would.”

“Angie, our planner, knows that if she couldn’t find me on the wedding day, it’s because I ran away with the tablecloth. I was in love with it. From the moment I laid eyes on it at our tasting when she brought a sample, I was giddy to have it be the focal point of our table display.”

Here’s what a handful of seasoned pros suggest adding to your winter wedding checklist.

Create a plan B (and C)

If there’s one thing winter loves to do, it’s surprise us with a snowstorm or icy roads at the most inconvenient times. That’s why every couple planning a winter wedding needs a backup plan (and sometimes even a backup to the backup!).

Loni Peterson, MLS, Owner of LP Creative Events, notes, “One thing that will always win for a winter wedding is over planning and preparing a risk mitigation strategy and plans B, C, and D! Also, making sure you hire a qualified team to execute, meaning, a planner who has experience working on mountain in the winter and vendors who have staff who can ski/snowboard to get to remote locations.”

Talk with your vendors about how they handle weather delays or cancellations, and work with your venue to understand your options. Knowing you’ve thought through different scenarios allows you to focus on enjoying your big day, no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.

Add touches of warmth

Winter weddings already have that comfortable, intimate vibe built in, so lean into it by adding thoughtful touches of warmth for your guests. Think hot chocolate bars with fun toppings, mulled wine stations, or spiced cider served as a welcome drink.

“Warm hands = happy guests,” reminds Craig Peterman, Photographer & Videographer at Craig Peterman Photography & Videography. “Offer hand warmers at the door, add a hot drink station the moment the sun drops, and stash a couple of fleece throws by the photo spots.”

Offering blankets or pashminas is a sweet way to show you’re thinking about everyone’s comfort. Bonus: these items double as memorable favors guests can take home.

Look into wedding insurance

It might not be the most glamorous part of wedding planning, but wedding insurance can be a real lifesaver, especially for a winter celebration. Weather can be tricky this time of year, and insurance helps protect your investment if a storm or unexpected issue forces a last-minute change of plans.

Lucy Struve, Owner of Lucy Struve Photography, shares, “Winter weddings often come with more unpredictable and volatile weather, depending on where you’re located. For this reason, I always recommend couples have wedding insurance, which protects their investment in the event of extreme weather conditions.”

Think of it as peace of mind. You hope you’ll never need it, but just in case, you’ll be grateful to have that safety net in place.

Have indoor + outdoor locations for photos

Winter weddings give you a chance to capture two very different (but equally stunning) looks in your gallery. The outdoor setting offers that frosty, fairytale vibe, while indoor spaces bring out the cozy side of the season.

“A common mistake is assuming outdoor photos will work out without issue,” admits Natalia Zuk, Co-Owner of Lilac Studios. “Even if couples can handle the cold, their skin will react by turning red, blotchy, and uneven, which doesn’t photograph well. That’s why I always recommend having a beautiful indoor location lined up for portraits. We can split time and take some romantic portraits outside, capturing the beauty of the season, then move inside where everyone’s comfortable and looking their best.”

That’s where mapping out multiple options is smart, as it gives you the flexibility to move between outdoor beauty and indoor comfort as the day unfolds.

Amos Gott, Chief Event Architect at AmosEvents, agrees, adding, “While snowy outdoor portraits are stunning, it might simply be too cold, or too icy, for extended time outside. Scout indoor spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Spaces like a cozy lounge with architectural charm, a sunlit conservatory, or even a hallway with vintage wallpaper and soft lighting can become your photo magic zones, especially if the weather turns. Bonus tip – coordinate with your photographer in advance to build a shot list that maximizes comfort and minimizes travel.”

Balance is everything. Once you’ve soaked up the outdoors, having an indoor option means you can keep the photo fun going without worrying about frozen fingers or uncomfortable smiles.

Wear layers

You’ll be surprised how quickly the chill can sneak up on you when you’re in formalwear. Brides, think about layering with a chic wrap, cape, or faux fur stole, while grooms may want to consider heavier fabrics or an extra undershirt.

“Dress in layers for outdoor ceremonies and photography sessions,” recommends McKenzi Taylor, Founder & Owner of Cactus Collective Weddings. “If the sun comes out in January or February and the wind dies down, it can feel like a warm spring day. Be prepared to shed a heavy overcoat and toss aside your mittens.”

And don’t forget your wedding party! Making sure your bridesmaids and groomsmen are dressed for the season means they’ll stay comfortable and happy.

Budget for space heaters

Outdoor ceremonies or tented receptions are dreamy, but no one wants to shiver through them. Space heaters are the unsung heroes of winter weddings, keeping guests comfortable while ensuring the vibe stays festive.

Emily Reno, Owner of Elopement Las Vegas, explains, “One thing couples almost always forget is space heaters or some kind of outdoor heating. A lot of winter weddings still include an outdoor ceremony, cocktail hour, or even just a space where guests can step outside for fresh air. Without heaters, it can be too uncomfortable for guests to enjoy those areas. The good news is that heaters are usually easy and inexpensive to rent locally, and they make a huge difference in keeping everyone comfortable.”

Ask your venue or rental company about the best options for your space, and make sure you’ve got the right number to heat the area properly. It’s one of those details guests might not notice outright, but will definitely appreciate when they’re comfortable without being bundled up in their coats.

Build a cold-weather emergency kit

Just like a summer bride might pack blotting papers and sunscreen, a winter wedding calls for its own emergency kit. Pack accordingly so any seasonal surprises don’t disrupt your day.

“Your emergency kit needs to match the season,” emphasizes Natasha Cardinal, Photographer & Owner of The Cardinals Elopements. “In winter, that means hand warmers, fleece lined tights under your dress, moisturizer, nose-blush concealer, clear umbrellas, and weatherproof mascara. A little cold weather prep goes a long way in keeping everyone comfortable and looking like themselves in photos.”

Your wedding planner (or a helpful bridesmaid) can keep this kit on hand, so you’ve got everything you need if the weather takes a toll. It’s all about being prepared for little hiccups so they don’t steal the spotlight from your celebration.

Plan for extra travel time

Between snow, icy roads, and holiday traffic, winter travel can be messy. Build in extra time for you and your guests to get where they need to be.

Liney Castle, Planner at Twickenham House and Hall, reveals, “Another mistake that I see is not factoring in extra time for travel during the winder months, especially in climates that often have snowfalls. This can be avoided with better planning when the planner, who is familiar with the area and/or venue proposes a transportation schedule that takes adverse conditions into account.”

If you’re providing transportation, make sure your drivers know to leave ahead of schedule and communicate clearly with guests about timing. Giving everyone a cushion helps keep the day running smoothly.

Don’t forget about your lighting

Winter weddings often mean shorter days, which can catch couples off guard. If your ceremony or photos are planned for late afternoon, you’ll want to make sure you’re set up with the right lighting.

“Most brides planning winter weddings think about ways to keep guests warm, but too often they forget about incorporating lighting into their designs,” highlights Tracy Autem, Owner of Tracy Autem & Lightly Photography. “The sun sets so early during the winter, that you’ll need to plan how to best utilize the natural light you will have, but also how to compensate with creative lighting options, especially during your reception. A first look or early ceremony are the best ways to ensure beautiful natural light portraits during the winter months.”

A glow of candlelight or strings of fairy lights can make your reception feel incredibly inviting. So when you’re planning, think of lighting as both a necessity and an opportunity to elevate your party.

Planning a wedding in the colder months may feel a little daunting, but it’s also what makes a winter celebration so memorable. The key is to simply be thoughtful about the challenges so they don’t overshadow the magic.

“I found my princess dress while scrolling on Pinterest one day. I had my Neiman Marcus bring the sample in store because they just so happened to be having a trunk show. I had actually wanted the dress in pink but ended up going with the traditional white as the pink washed me out. It’s a Monique Lhuiller design, 15 lbs in all. “I knew I wanted a very grand dress because the Corinthian is such a grand venue. I have always dreamed of having a very long train with an even longer veil. After visiting Ivory Bridal in Houston, I found the perfect dress by Anne Barge. It was a V-notched bodice with full ballgown skirt of hand beaded floral embossed jacquard. The dress, while stunning, did not have the long train I had envisioned. To fulfill my dream, we extended the train to add a touch of drama and elegance to the gown. This extension ended up being the longest train extension in history at Ivory Bridal, Atelier. To complement the dress, I selected a 100% silk veil, which was also extended, creating a cohesive and breathtaking bridal look.”

“For me, the day was a mosaic of favorite parts, from the awe-inspiring sight of the venue, bathed in the soft glow of white candles lining the red-carpeted stairs, to the profound and tender first look with Colton. The year-long wait to reveal my dress culminated in a moment of pure joy and connection. As I walked towards him, and saw the emotion in his eyes, it was then that I realized that this was the moment I had waited a lifetime for! It was a scene of profound intimacy and love – a private interlude before we spent the remainder of the day with our family and friends celebrating the most important day of our lives.“

“Colton and I both share an appreciation for a timeless elegant style, which inspired our wedding theme. I aimed for a classic look with white floral arrangements accented by a touch of color. Believing that marriage symbolizes unity, we incorporated this concept into most wedding details to reflect both of us rather than just one or the other. If we chose pink it would solely represent Erica, instead we opted for light blue, a favorite color for both of us, creating a harmonious blend that complemented the spring floral theme beautifully.“

“Instead of a regular bar we had a custom ice bar brought in. The main bar, an impressive 8-foot structure, was a work of art in itself, it showcased a breathtaking display of florals, meticulously encased within to create a frozen tableau. At the heart of the bar, a personalized monogram “E&C” was etched with precision, adding a touch of elegance and personalization to the setting. The bar’s most innovative feature was the shot luge. This turned into the social hub at the wedding with guests gathered around imbibing in libations.”

“Unaware of the Southern tradition of a groom’s cake, Colton was in for a treat. I embraced the opportunity to blend his passion for Star Wars into our celebration. My quest for the perfect cake led me to Good Gosh Ganache in Houston, where the artisan crafted a life-sized Stormtrooper cake that was nothing short of a masterpiece. The cake, a true work of art, stood proudly next to elegant floral arrangements, its intricate details mirroring the iconic armor. It was not just a dessert; it was a symbol of joy and surprise that illuminated Colton’s face, capturing the essence of the celebration and among the guests’ favorite detail. There was a constant flow of people taking photos with the Stormtrooper cake all night long.”

Finally, as a petite person, the key to getting the perfect fit was finding a tailor who knew how to alter European dress sizing into a petite frame.“

“We were inspired by the lives we lived when we lived in New York, both before and after we had met. Our goal was to create the kind of fun, hip restaurant we’d spent so many of our nights at over the years, with a mix of narrative, and surrounded by our families both biological and found.”

I love it because it can add whatever element you desire based on the color you pick: vibrancy and fun, warmth and grounding, happiness and joy, creative and wow-factor. There are so many options.”

If you’re worried about going too bright, balance is key. Pair bold hues with grounding neutrals like cream, black, or soft gray so the colors shine without overwhelming the space.

Warm brown

Earthy and grounding, warm browns are making a strong return in 2025 fall weddings. They pair beautifully with textures like wood, linen, and leather, creating a palette that’s warm yet timeless.

“We continue to lean into the Pantone Color of the Year Mocha Mousse,” states Casey Cannon, Owner of EBJ & Company. “Pairing this with mauve or even taupe and blush makes for a romantic palette that is still soft and inviting for guests. For our couples that appreciate a neutral palette but want it to have a little color, this is a perfect palette that can be used for a fall wedding.”

Brown also works as a versatile anchor color, complementing everything from soft neutrals to bold jewel tones.

Kelley Nudo, Client Relations & Operations Director at Momental Designs, confirms, adding, “With Mocha Mousse being the 2025 Pantone color of the year, we are seeing a departure from the gray tones; instead, couples are beginning to favor shades of brown.”

“I’m also seeing couples use deep jewel tones—like aubergine or emerald—as visual punctuation: not the whole story, but the moment that makes you look twice,” notes Natasha Cardinal, Photographer & Owner at The Cardinals Elopements.

Dried or pressed flowers are making their way into all facets of the wedding design. Instead of fresh or sugar flowers, I’m seeing a trend of dried or pressed flowers on cakes. Dried flowers give a unique visual twist and speak to sustainability and budget-conscious design.”

Couples love them not only for their one-of-a-kind look but also for their longevity. Unlike fresh blooms, dried flowers can be kept long after the wedding day as a keepsake, or even repurposed into home décor.

Mono-Floral

Sometimes less really is more. One of the freshest trends for 2025 is spotlighting a single bloom and letting it steal the show for the ultimate modern monochromatic vibe.

Jacqueline Vizcaino, Owner of Tinted Events Design and Planning, notes, “We’re seeing couples fall in love with the idea of one bloom, done big. A full ceremony aisle of white tulips. A baby’s breath cloud in the couple’s color choice suspended over the dance floor. It sounds simple, and maybe it is, but it also makes everything feel so focused. It’s like the flowers know their role, and they’re not trying to do too much.”

By focusing on one flower, you create a theme that feels personal without needing dozens of varieties.

“Top trends I’m both seeing and predicting for 2025 and going into 2026 are more design-driven personal florals i.e. instead of the traditional bridal bouquet, brides are going for more of an artistic and effortless look like carrying a bunch of florals in their arms or being wrapped with a large ribbon and hanging from their arms, same thing for bridal party, if they choose to even have one, I definitely see those beautiful floral purses still taking over,” says Michelle Fernie-Oley, Owner of Michelle Elaine Weddings.

Breaking tradition also means not feeling boxed in by what’s “expected.” Love protea or anthuriums? Use them. Want to mix flowers with unexpected elements like feathers or fruit? Go for it. This trend is about letting your personality guide the floral choices, rather than sticking to a formula.

“Despite expecting to leave the bridal stores with a sleek, modern and geometric-detailed dress, I fell in love with a multi-layer lace gown with a neutral undertone and a full train. This gown has different lace layers, like Swiss dot, and a gorgeous, detailed floral top layer, which highlights the overall vintage design. Pearls were my accent, including pearl drop earrings, a pearl veil, a simple pearl necklace, and a custom-designed pearl bracelet that my parents had designed and gifted the night before. One of the first items purchased for my bridal look was my olive green suede classic pump shoes, and a matching pair of olive green suede Vans to change into for party-mode paired with Wifey Socks.”

“We wanted to bring together touches of vintage with a splash of modern to match the sleek style of our venue, while incorporating our love for vintage. Our color palette featured olive green, champagnes, golds, and creams and whites. The florals created a pop of color to evoke a garden party, with corals, yellows, and pinks. Utilizing lots of florals and candlelight for the tables created an intimate, cozy, but sophisticated garden party feel.”

“I think my favorite detail was bringing my vision to life for a book-based seating chart. I spent months curating vintage and antique books within our color scheme that were displayed on a lovely bookshelf. The stacks of books were organized per table, and each guest had a custom bookmark with their name and table assignment, which was also a takeaway from the wedding. The bookmark incorporated my favorite shape, a tassel matching our color scheme, and featured our custom monogram that we created with our stationer. Some of the stacks of books had little Easter eggs / nods to the associated guests, like a Sherlock Holmes book in the stack for the brother of the bride and a Colorado book for the groom’s family.”

“We loved listening to a jazz trio while playing a round of cornhole together as new husband and wife, and enjoying appetizers during cocktail hour. Another favorite moment was the First dance as husband and wife with butterflies in our stomachs.”

“My wedding gown was Monique Lhuillier, and it was actually called the Carter dress!! I purchased it in NYC at the ML store on Madison Avenue. I loved the tails in the back. I wanted it to feel more traditional, and so we worked with an incredible ML seamstress to design a jacket to go over it, which was my favorite part. It was the Royalty Jacket with Honey Lace. I loved that it was illusion over the front of my gown, so it didn’t alter the neckline, but evolved into these very elegant sleeves and was tailored to match the back of the dress. It turned out perfect for me!”

“I wore my grandmother’s veil, which was the most beautiful thing ever! I am blessed to have had her there to see me wear it.“

“The ceremony was very special. We got married in a pretty small church, so there was a good bit of overflow with guests standing out front. Walking out of the trolly with my dad and up towards the front doors of the church, seeing so many friends standing outside felt like a magical moment.”

“I live by warm colors, and I would say the way we decorated our home is a mix of masculine and feminine items/colors/textures, but everything is warm in nature. I wanted the wedding to feel like a continuation of our home. Linville is so beautiful on its own, so I tried to just enhance its beauty with flowers and not overdo it. We incorporated a lot of chartreuse, salmon, melon, peach, brown, and leaned into bolder colors instead of pastels.”

“I think the seated dinner was my second favorite part. Sitting next to Kevin, with our closest friends and family at our head table, and just looking around together at all of our other friends and family, inside this venue that is so special to me, with my brothers across from me giving me a hard time about the wine, everything just felt so perfect I thought my face was going to break from smiling so hard.”

The ceremony was held beneath vaulted ceilings, vintage lighting, and rich historic detail, offering a timeless atmosphere. Abby wore a halter gown by Antonio Gual, featuring lace and beading — an elegant look perfectly suited to the setting.

For the reception, Abby changed into a sequined dress that caught the candlelight as she stepped into the celebration. Union Station was transformed into an elegant dinner party, softened by spring floral arrangements, flickering candlelight, and thoughtful details of printed green floral plates and subtly embossed tablecloths. The space radiated charm and tenderness, an elevated yet heartfelt reflection of the couple’s vision. Abby remembers, “We never lost sight of the purpose of the event,” as they planned each decision and took on each challenge together.

If there are children at the wedding, it’s a good idea to seat them with either other children or with families that have children there as well. Putting people together who are in a similar age bracket will ensure there is plenty to talk about and connect over during the wedding.”

“While dancing is typical for most wedding receptions, some couples might consider other forms of entertainment for the guests,” highlights Kelley Nudo, Client Relations & Operations Director at Momental Designs. “Some receptions include roving magicians, artists creating illustrations of the guests, photobooths, communal art pieces, yard games, and even appearances of animals; one couple of ours had alpacas for the guests to visit with during the reception. Every entertainment option provided will encourage the guests to get out of their seats and will likely result in more engagement with one another.”

“Wedding day schedules depend on a wide variety of factors, and while you can certainly take aspects of someone else’s wedding day flow that you loved and incorporate them into your own day, expecting your day to look just like someone else’s is unrealistic and sets you up for unneeded stress,” says Elena Markwood, Owner and Lead Planner at Adoration Weddings & Events.

Neutrals are having a major moment in 2025, but they are being done in a fresh way. Shades like sandy beiges, chocolate browns, and deep greens bring organic elegance to this year’s weddings.

Alex McClard, Owner & Lead Planner of Vision in White Events, states, “We’re seeing some earth tones coming out this year. Greens, browns, tans and other neutral colors, mixing in vintage colored florals with mauve and other pinks.”

These shades all pair beautifully with rustic, boho, or minimalist styles, but you can also dress them up for a more refined, romantic feel.

Loni Peterson, MLS of LP Creative Events, agrees, sharing, “Knowing that Mocha Mousse is the color of the year, we are starting to see more monochrome neutral wedding designs happen and embracing the full spectrum of neutrals.”

The key with earth tones is to layer shades and textures for a cohesive look that feels both timeless and modern.

Red Hot

2025 is all about bringing on the drama. Nothing screams this more than the bold red hue that has been trending.

“The biggest fresh color trend that we’re seeing everywhere right now, which is bold, punchy reds and corals,” shares Elena Markwood, Owner and Lead Planner at Adoration Weddings & Events. “The ‘cherry-coded’ wedding is definitely having a moment, and since couples who are currently planning their weddings can’t get enough of this bold, unapologetic hue, I expect that we will be seeing cherry-coded moments throughout our events well into 2026.”

“Red is making some big movements right now in the wedding space,” agrees Cayla Cummings, Owner of Carhart Photography. “There’s a trend toward warm reds with deep wine-toned accents that are being used not just as accents but as a primary, bold central color.”

A little nervous about going cherry overload? Try it as an accent hue.

“I like the pops of bold colors we are seeing for the year,” says Penny Haas, Owner of Penny Haas, LLC. “The mocha mousse color is great for a neutral, sophisticated look, but adding in pops of cherry cola red or a deep purple will make a dramatic statement.”

Pop Culture

There’s no denying it: Pop culture tends to shape our aesthetics, and weddings are no exception. Fan-favorite movies and shows are constantly weaving their way into our celebrations.

Jen Avey, VP of Marketing at Destination Weddings Travel Group, says, “Wicked has captured the hearts of many and we’re predicting couples will be inspired by the whimsical elements of the movie, one of which will be incorporating the iconic duo of emerald green and millennial pink into their wedding color palette.”

“Barbiecore is still having its moment,” confirms Elena Markwood, Owner and Lead Planner at Adoration Weddings & Events. “Weddings in every shade of pink are still making their rounds on social media as well – funky venues like vintage motels in Southern California seem to lend themselves well to this type of aesthetic.”

It’s all about capturing that over-the-top, dramatic elegance in a playful and sophisticated way. And if you’re not into Wicked or Barbie, think about what other shows, movies, or music might influence your creative vision.

Pretty Pastels

If you’re dreaming of romance, you can’t go wrong with pastels. They may be a tried and true color palette for weddings, but 2025 will see couples using these soft shades in new ways.

“We are seeing shades of pastel yellow pop up more and more in and out of the wedding industry,” notes Loni Peterson, MLS of LP Creative Events. “You can also see this color on the red carpet for awards shows and premiers!”

Zhaun Frias, Owner & Lead Photographer of Zhaun Frias Photography, agrees, sharing, “For 2025, we’re going to find color palettes that give a Bridgerton vibe, a feeling of royalty. I am predicting a lot of lilacs and dusty blues. Ethereal lilac communicates soft and dreamy. Its pastel hue is perfect for springtime and garden weddings.”

Pastels aren’t just for springtime. These subtle hues can be gorgeous in any season, especially when paired in unexpected ways.

“Another growing trend is mixing soft pastels, such as blush pink, delicate lilacs, and muted sage, for a dreamy and romantic palette,” confirms Natalia Zuk, Owner of Lilac Studios.

Feeling Blue

It is clear from trending reds and yellows that primary colors are having their heyday. The same goes for blue. From bold and bright to deep and moody to soft and subtle- this hue is a versatile and tried and true wedding color.

McKenzi Taylor, Founder/Owner of Cactus Collective Weddings, notes, “It’s clear to me that everything from florals to jewelry to attire is trending dark blue and dark green.”

“Dusty blue communicates elegance and sophistication,” adds Zhaun Frias, Owner & Lead Photographer of Zhaun Frias Photography. “Its versatility makes your day feel timeless and serene.”

Even if you don’t necessarily have a specific look in mind, it’s important to consider guest comfort, location, and having everyone generally coordinated so that no one feels (or looks) out of place. 

First, figure out your ‘why’ + the vision

Before you start creating mood boards and sending out guidelines, consider what your ‘why’ is for establishing a specific dress code. Are you hoping for some coordinated photos, for example? Once you nail down the vision, then you can start getting to work on ironing out the details.

Kati Kons of Portrait of a Bride on Fire suggests starting from square one — your reasoning. “Find the reason or reasons that you are setting a dress code at all. It could be so the vibe is cohesive throughout, you want to be helpful to folks, or you want guests to feel involved. Starting with your reasoning for setting one in the first place will provide clarity for what you really want to see and help communicate it to guests in the best way.”

Loni Peterson of LP Creative Events adds, “When you close your eyes, and you envision your guests showing up to your wedding – what do you see? This exercise is so helpful in articulating the look you are hoping to achieve. Once you have an idea, I would start writing down key descriptive words to help identify what aesthetic you are going for, then hit Pinterest to find images that look like what you are going for.”

And if you want to keep everything organized while you brainstorm, Michelle Jackson of Bambino International favors tech. “A tool that is helpful for staying organized regarding your style vision is the app Notion. One of the tools we provide for our couples is a custom wedding planning template that allows couples to stay organized and have a streamlined way of communicating their wedding vision in order for it to truly come to life. It helps you put your vision on ‘paper,’ rate it, link it, connect with a mood board, and use it as a fun tool to help your fashion inspiration develop. This is a great way to discover the right dress code for your wedding.”

Your checklist for tailoring the best dress code

Now that you’re getting a feel for what vibe you’re after, you’ll want to take some other factors into consideration to make sure your dress code passes the test.

For starters, Alex McClard of Vision in White Events recommends looking at your venue and season to make sure you’re on the right track. “If you are inside a formal ballroom in the colder months, formal and black tie are great options. If you are doing an outdoor garden wedding in July, you may want to consider more of a cocktail or semi-formal attire. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to have a black-tie dress code at a rustic barn venue.”

Ceremony attire versus reception attire is also worth noting, according to Jaime Coast of Cotton & Bow. “Don’t forget the ceremony. If the ceremony is being held in a place of worship, make sure the dress code reflects what is appropriate at both the ceremony and reception location.”

Make sure to think about your dinner style as well. Casey Cannon of EBJ & Company notes, “If your dinner style is a bit more casual like a buffet or stations without a seating chart, your dress code should align with this. The more formal the dress code, the less that guests should be walking around your reception holding a plate of food. A plated meal should be served when choosing black tie attire.”

Don’t forget the weather! Emily Reno of Elopement Las Vegas says, “Expecting guests to wear black-tie attire in such extreme heat is not ideal and could even lead to medical issues from overheating. A great solution would be to either adjust the dress code to something more weather-appropriate or move the ceremony indoors to a climate-controlled space with air conditioning.”

Attainability is often overlooked; your best-laid plans might be out-of-season if a guest doesn’t already have something in their closet that fits the bill. “If you’re giving your guests a color scheme, be sure to be mindful of the time of year. Requesting your guests to wear bright colors in the dead of winter could be more challenging for them to find something that they feel comfortable in,” says Meaghan Cody of Sweet Pea Events.

Lastly, Carmen Hinebaugh of Evermore Occasions also encourages you to ask yourself an important question: will your guests be comfortable? “If you have family members or close friends who may not own or be comfortable wearing or purchasing formalwear, take that into consideration. It’s your wedding, and you should have the dress code you want, but you also want your guests to feel at ease and able to participate. If a particular dress code is important to you but a challenge for some VIPs, consider gifting their wedding outfits as a thoughtful way to ensure they feel included.”

Dress code trends on the horizon

Stumped for inspiration? Micro-trends have you overwhelmed? You’re not alone. Let’s dive into some evergreen tips, whether you choose to go extravagant or stay more lowkey.

Leah Black of Leah Black Photography suggests starting with your personal style if you aren’t sure where to begin. “Your wedding should reflect you as a couple. Use the dress code to express that. Give guests some guidelines, but let them bring their own flair. Phrases like ‘black tie with a twist’ or ‘cocktail attire with a garden-party vibe’ can spark creativity. This way, you’ll get lively pictures and make everyone feel included.”

Looking for a viral, photogenic moment? “Something similar we are seeing going viral is ‘Outdress the Bride,’ where couples encourage guests to go all out with their attire—think red carpet glamour, avant-garde, and extravagant looks. Unlike traditional etiquette, which emphasizes not overshadowing the bride, this trend flips the script, inviting guests to embrace high-fashion moments and show up in their most dazzling outfits,” says Mary Angelini of Key Moment Films. “It can be dramatic gowns, bold colors, or couture-inspired ensembles for both men and women. The goal is to create a visually stunning celebration where everyone feels like a star.”

If a luxurious, pulling-out-all-the-stops dress code isn’t in the cards, Craig Peterman of Craig Peterman Photography & Videography notes, “A big trend right now is ‘formal but comfortable.’ Allow for some flexibility, like pairing fancy outfits with stylish sneakers or opting for dressy jumpsuits instead of traditional gowns.”

For beach weddings and all other specific destination locales, we recommend keeping things light and comfortable.

According to Lisa Radlovacki of Lisa London Events, “I have done many beach weddings that are black tie optional; we make sure guests know the ceremony will be on the beach so they are prepared to kick off their shoes and dip their toes in the sand, and for those that aren’t, we often have flip flops waiting for them.”

Whatever you decide, Rachel Ceaser of Savoir Fête reminds you to gauge guest accessibility. “If you know your crowd is unlikely to own a tuxedo, I love ‘black tie welcome’ as a note that no tuxedo rentals are required, but anyone who wants to dress to the nines will not be out of place. For multicultural weddings, adding details to your wedding website that include more notes about attire expectations or even resources on where to purchase appropriate outfits would be a very thoughtful gesture toward making everyone feel welcome at the celebration.”

Communicating with your guests (visuals are key!)

Now that you’ve nailed down your dream dress code, it’s your sole responsibility to ensure that you give guests plenty of notice so that everyone is on the same page.

It can be tempting to repeat the name of a micro-trend you’ve seen on TikTok (re: blueberry milk nails and cowboy copper hair), but when communicating your dress code aesthetic, it’s better to stick to universal terms. Lucy Struve of Lucy Struve Photography says, “Clarity is considerate. Avoid the urge to coin a new term that describes your wedding aesthetic and instead stick with the more well-known language.”

Stationery expert Kelley Nudo of Momental Designs wants your dress code information to be clear and accessible — everywhere. “Plan to include dress code information on BOTH the invitations as well as the wedding website. Making it clear and direct is best, but even then, you might still have to field a few questions about attire, so be prepared. Keep the dress code as simply stated, or if you decide to go into more detail about the attire, keep it lighthearted.“

Nudo also recommends confirming the dress code(s) for other wedding festivities, including brunches, welcome parties, or otherwise.

Guests will inevitably need a little reminder (or two), especially in this era of attending multiple weddings in a year. To keep your dress code at the top of mind, Peterson continues, “You should communicate your dress code preferences several times with your guests through a variety of channels. We are all different types of learners, so we all absorb information differently! You can do this by adding the words on the save-the-date, a larger and more visual description on the wedding website, and event-by-event dress code outlines on the formal invitation.”

In the same vein, if there are outfits or accessories you want to leave out of your big day, Struve adds, “Be specific if there is anything you want your guests to avoid. No black, no jeans, etc., are all reasonable additions to a dress code memo.”

Guests who aren’t in the wedding party will typically also need a little bit of inspiration if you’re giving a hyper-specific dress code. 

Coast says enlisting the help of tech to provide some examples on your wedding website can be a game-changer. “Couples are more and more using tools like Canva and AI to visualize their wedding party attire and guest dress codes together to create mood boards and color palettes for the dress code.”

For the stragglers who may not be in the loop: “No matter how much guidance you give on the dress code, there will always be a few who ignore the memo. To avoid these guests looking out of the box in photos, offering favors such as pashminas, parasols, custom sunglasses, or other accessories to help them look cohesive among the other guests,” advises Carin Hunt of Coconut Palm Inn.

A fun dress code makes for some memorable and shareable social media moments, but it also connects your loved ones and gives everyone equal footing to dress to impress. Dare to think outside of the box, or let your hair down and encourage comfort — the choice is yours.

Alexandra’s bridal look exuded regal style, with lacy long sleeves, a high neckline, and a fitted crepe skirt, complemented by floral Chanel heels.

The ceremony was held amidst a room of visually impressive details: boldly printed carpets, wood-paneled walls, and ornate ceilings. At the altar rested a Chuppah made entirely from ivory fabrics, with a family tallit hanging from the center. Officiated by a Rabbi from their temple in Atlanta, the ceremony included Jewish traditions like breaking the glass, as well as Catholic traditions, with a Father from their local church leading a blessing of the rings.

The parlor room was dedicated to desserts, featuring plates of macarons and three separate wedding cakes decorated with unique floral touches. The couple was mindful to keep the guest count smaller, providing them with more quality time dedicated to each close friend and family member, and to each other.

Here are four ways to fill your big day with meaning, value, and lots of love. 

Make your ceremony your own 

It’s all fun and games at the wedding reception, but let’s not rush past the whole purpose of the day! Wedding ceremonies might be the shortest part of the day, but they’re undoubtedly the most significant moment for everyone involved. After all, it’s when you get to make your marriage official! 

Instead of using a pre-set ceremony script off the internet, add meaning to your ceremony by working with an officiant to craft your own. Include readings, songs, and quotes that hold significance in your relationship. “Personalized vows are also a great way to add some of your heart and love to the ceremony as well,” says Craig Peterman of Craig Peterman Photography & Videography.  

Feeling shy? Peterman suggests exchanging personalized vows in private before the ceremony. Consider scheduling an intimate first look where you can share your thoughts and soak in the moment together before the festivities begin. 

Ceremony rituals offer another great way to personalize your big day. “A unity candle, hand-fasting, or sand jar can be a great way to show that commitment between you and your partner,” Peterman adds. If you want to honor one or both of your heritages, you can incorporate cultural traditions like breaking glass, foot washing, or jumping the broom. 

Tie personal touches into your design 

You don’t need to sacrifice aesthetics to plan a wedding day that feels like it truly belongs to you. All it takes is a dose of creativity and the help of experienced vendors! 

Ashley Allan of Your Jubilee Weddings encourages couples to “infuse their story into the day through intentional details.” How you interpret that is open to your imagination! 

A few ideas to spark inspiration include “using the names of mountains as table assignments, including photos of family members on their wedding days, and incorporating different cultural and religious elements in the ceremony that are inclusive of both families,” Loni Peterson of LP Creative Events offers. 

Another crowd favorite is when couples incorporate their four-legged friends in their wedding day design. Think “custom figurines on the cake, naming cocktails after them with a portrait on the bar sign, or even a ‘doggy bag’ from the dogs to take desserts home,” Allan adds. “We love these little touches to include your furry family in the day.” 

Reflect on your journey together and pick significant moments and elements to highlight on your big day. Maybe it’s a shared love for a sports team (or even a household rivalry!) or perhaps it’s the movie marathon you enjoyed on your first date — there’s plenty of inspiration to gather if you know where to look. 

Craft a meaningful playlist 

It’s hard to imagine a wedding reception without music. Curating a soundtrack for your love story is the perfect way to set the tone for a purposeful, heart-led celebration. The right playlist will keep guests on their feet while offering a taste of your personalities. 

“Music sets the mood for your entire day, so choose songs that mean something to you as a couple,” Peterman affirms. “Don’t only play music your guests want to hear, but play music you love to hear! A song from your first date or a tune you both love, these intentional selections will evoke emotion and keep your day authentic to who you are.” 

Sit down with your partner to create a list of meaningful songs. Then, work with your DJ or band to fill in the gaps with tunes that fit the sound and style of your selections. If you prefer a certain genre, be sure to consider that as you build your wedding day playlist! 

Show your appreciation 

If you wanted to tie the knot alone, you’d elope. But if you’re reading this, chances are you can’t wait to celebrate your nuptials while surrounded by loved ones! Your family and friends are a big part of your story, so showing gratitude for their presence means a lot. 

While putting in face-time with your guests is a good start, Casey Cannon of EBJ & Company notes that it can be hard to greet everyone personally on your wedding day.  

“Writing each guest an individual note is an intentional way to share your appreciation for their attendance at your wedding,” Cannon suggests. “Consider using this note for their place card or seating chart for a dual-purpose detail that is practical and meaningful.” 

Sending guests home with a personalized gift is another sweet gesture to show your thanks. Luggage tags, wine glasses, and koozies are all popular choices, but Tracy Autem of Tracy Autem & Lightly Photography recommends taking favors to the next level with a hands-on experience. 

“A branding or embroidery station is a fun way to involve your family and friends in the favor experience,” Autem shares. “They get to pick out their monogram brand or select a name for their embroidery. When a detail at your wedding is fully customized for your guests, they will treasure it for years to come.” 

It’s worth noting that a token of thanks doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag to hold meaning for your guests. You can show appreciation with a simple, thoughtful keepsake they’ll treasure for years to come! 

As you navigate the planning process, remember that the most meaningful celebrations are those filled with intention and heart. The most important part of your wedding isn’t the decorations or the menu — the beauty is in the purpose and sentiment that shine through in every moment from your ceremony processional to your final farewell.

My vision was very airy, romantic, and earthy. Timelessness and simplicity were two key themes. We looked for an outdoor venue that could bring in different tropical elements from Florida: a garden setting and European influence with neutral and earth tones. Our color palette was taupe, ivory, blush, peach, and rose. The house near the banyan trees has an Italian/Spanish look and the tropical vibe made it feel like a different world for guests to walk into.

I choose my dress with my mom. After trying on a million dresses, I narrowed it down to this one because it fit like a glove. It was exactly what I was looking for – something that hugged my curves, had some beading and intricacy while also being simple in some regards to the crepe material on the lower half of the dress, and a beautiful train that had a feminine air to it, while also being sexy with the beautiful back. I knew for an outdoor wedding, I did not want a large train to carry around, and this dress was absolutely stunning. It hit the mark for everything I could have ever wanted.

Selby Gardens is absolutely breathtaking and has so many hidden areas. I loved the variety of backgrounds for all my pictures (mixture of tropical palm trees, bay, lawn, banyan trees, etc.). The florals were gorgeous – delicate and romantic mixed with the table settings. I also really liked the furniture we had for guests and the chandeliers, which created a fairy tale look under the stars.

One of the highlights was my Aunts, who flew in from Jordan for the wedding. We played a couple of Arabic songs, and they had so much fun dancing with everyone. We also played Portuguese music to honor my mom’s side of the family. Being that both my parents were born in different countries and we celebrated both Arabic and Portuguese cultures growing up, this was one of my favorite memories. To showcase my heritage and have my friends/family come together to share these pieces that make me unique. Ultimately, having everyone we love in one place – celebrating our union. That is the most special thing I could have asked for.

Beyond that, hometown weddings offer practical benefits. For one, your familiarity with the area will make planning a large event much easier! You’ll also make it easier for guests to attend without worrying about travel expenses, which could mean having more loved ones at your side on the big day.

If you’re considering hosting a wedding in your hometown, here are four things to consider as you begin the planning process.

Expect a longer guest list

When a wedding involves travel, couples can expect to hear “no, thank you” from some guests. But when most of your loved ones live locally, you’ll likely have many more RSVPs to attend — the more, the merrier!

“Typically, 75 to 80% of invited guests show up at a wedding,” wedding planner Penny Haas shares. “A hometown wedding may have more attendance because of less travel, accessibility, location, and community.”

Of course, hosting a hometown wedding can come with the added pressure of extending your guest list to more people. But Haas assures couples they “do not have to invite everyone from their hometown.” However, if the whole purpose of tying the knot close to home is due to a local community, “consider a little cushion in the guest count,” she adds.

If you envision a wedding full of friends and family members, hosting a hometown celebration won’t disappoint!

Anticipate local changes

If you haven’t lived in your hometown for a while, you may find that your dream venue or favorite restaurant isn’t how you remembered it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate your favorite things about the area!

“Try to remain flexible and fluid with your planning,” encourages Craig Peterman of Craig Peterman Photography & Videography. “Keep an open mind and be prepared for unexpected changes. Flexibility will make the process much less stressful and help you focus on what matters most — enjoying the moment.”

Before booking anything, Jen Sulak of Weirdo Weddings recommends “getting updated information on basic costs, new businesses in town, and if anything has changed spatially.” If you have friends and family in the area, see if they can scout some of your ideal locations and ask around for vendor recommendations.

Guests still need accommodations

You might think you can forgo the traditional room block if most of your guests are local, but that typically isn’t the case. Most couples expect at least a few out-of-towners to attend, so helping them secure accommodations is always a good idea.

Even so, Kelley Nudo of Momental Designs notes that “some guests who are local might want to stay overnight if they plan to enjoy the open bar, so having some rooms reserved is still something that should be done.”

Pick a hotel close to the venue to simplify transportation, allowing guests to use ride-sharing apps or taxi services at an affordable rate. Better yet, consult with your venue to see if nearby hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service within a set radius.

If you get a room block, “be sure to add an enclosure card to each invitation detailing the accommodation options,” Nudo says. “Add this information to the wedding website, too!”

Pre- and post-wedding festivities are optional

With destination weddings, there’s an expectation for the celebration to span several days with welcome parties, excursions, and farewell brunches filling the itinerary. Since everyone is a visitor, couples are inclined to keep them engaged throughout their stay.

When you host an at-home wedding, there’s less need to entertain guests beyond the wedding day. As such, “couples can use this advantage to skip them all together and save on costs if they prefer,” Nudo assures.

However, if you’re looking forward to spending time with loved ones, you may still want to host a few wedding-adjacent events. It’s also common for parents to throw a welcome party or farewell brunch to take advantage of the time together. 

To keep it simple, Nudo suggests “leaning into the local favorites, like hosting a welcome party at the best pizza parlor in town, which can be an easy and cost-effective idea.”

Casey Cannon of EBJ & Company notes that couples can also host wedding weekend events at a family home. “While this is not a necessity, it is a lovely way of showing hospitality,” she states. Before inviting people over, “make sure your home is in tip-top shape and set up to care for guests in regard to parking, bathrooms, and places to sit.”

Pre- and post-wedding events are wonderful opportunities for everyone to make even more memories from your big weekend! And for couples, it’s an extra chance to get face-time with loved ones outside of the busy whirlwind of the wedding day. But if you don’t want to plan anything beyond your ceremony and reception, there’s no obligation!

In planning their wedding, Carley and Rocco wanted to celebrate Aspen’s natural beauty while infusing elements of their personalities. After an outdoor ceremony under market lights, their historic hotel venue was dressed to the nines with floral-printed linens, mirror signage, and warm candlelight. Roses and dahlias in shades of blush, magenta, and crimson were filled in with greenery, adding rich fall-inspired hues to every corner of the space. For guests, a custom newspaper told Carley and Rocco’s sweet love story and featured vintage photos of the two growing up. Ever the fun-loving couple, the newlyweds revisited their childhood together by wrapping up the night with a good old-fashioned pillow fight. Talk about happily ever after!

We wanted our wedding to be authentic and true to our style and energy. We wanted to celebrate Aspen’s natural beauty while adding elements of our personalities.

I found my dress by accident. The week after our engagement, I was walking with my brother-in-law to lunch, and he suggested that we go into a bridal boutique for fun. I spoke with the receptionist, and she said that they were having a trunk show that was beginning the next day, but the dresses had arrived, and if I could come back in an hour, I could try them on first. We came back in an hour with my sister, and I tried on five dresses for fun, each in a different style, so I could get an idea of what I liked. The 6th dress that I tried on was selected by the bridal consultant and didn’t have much hanger appeal, but it was the last one in the dressing room, so I decided to give it a shot. I put it on and said, “whoahhh…” My sister and her husband agreed that we did not need to look any further. I put on a veil and facetimed my parents, and the rest is history!

We loved being together with all of our closest family and friends in our favorite city, seeing everyone sharing in our joy and emotions and feeling so much support. Knowing how present everyone was made us feel even more special.

We loved walking into the ball room and antler room for the first time. As we did not participate in the wedding planning, we were seeing all of the decor and details with our guests for the first time.

If family means everything to you and your partner, you’ll love exploring creative ways to tie your family’s history into your wedding day. Here are eight ideas to get you thinking! 

Photos 

Family photos are a sweet way to pay tribute to loved ones and show guests a glimpse into the stories that led to you and your partner falling in love.  

“Your wedding is the newest addition to your family’s love stories,” Kelsey Strickland of Twickenham House and Hall explains. “Incorporate wedding photos of loved ones at your ceremony or reception. These photos can be on a memory table or line your aisle.” 

You could also integrate family photos into your wedding decor by using them for escort cards, table numbers, or a guest book to save as a lifelong keepsake. You make the rules! Your family members will love seeing vintage shots of their parents, grandparents, siblings, and other relatives woven throughout your special day. 

Jewelry 

Add a touch of timeless elegance to your wedding day look with jewelry that keeps your family close to your heart. Whether it’s Grandma’s necklace or Mom’s vintage earrings, heirloom pieces can make you feel more connected to your loved ones on your big day. 

“Wearing a family member’s jewelry in a unique way gives a personal and memorable touch to the heirloom,” wedding photographer Melani Lust confirms. 

For a modern twist, reimagine how the jewelry is used. For example, “earrings used as necklaces, necklaces used as bracelets, and many other combinations,” Lust suggests. “The most creative I’ve seen is a bride wearing her grandmother’s two diamond brooches as hair pins for her veil.” 

And heirloom jewelry isn’t just for the ladies — grooms can sport meaningful pieces, too!  

“Gentlemen can get into the heirloom trend by wearing sentimental items like cuff links, tie tacks, or rings,” wedding photographer Tracy Autem assures. A family member’s wristwatch or pocket watch can also serve the same purpose! 

Attire 

Wearing an heirloom dress or suit is one of the most personal ways to honor a family member, but that doesn’t mean your fashion sense needs to go back in time. If you don’t like the fit or style, consider asking permission to tailor it to your preferences. 

Autem suggests altering a family gown to suit your style. “Your Mother or Grandmother’s dress could be re-designed into your own wedding day attire or shortened for a fun and sentimental look for your rehearsal dinner,” she says. 

Or, if you’ve already picked your dream day-of outfit, EBJ & Company’s Casey Cannon recommends “cutting a piece of fabric from their attire and sewing it onto yours.” That way, you can dress how you’d like with “a sweet touch only you and a select few will know about, making it an intimate reminder of those loved ones.” 

Whether you wear an outfit passed down through generations or add a subtle piece of fabric to your attire, these touches are a beautiful way to carry your family history throughout the day. What better way to enter a new chapter of life than with a reminder of the legacy you’re continuing? 

Furniture 

Nostalgic for weekends spent lounging on Grandpa’s vintage chaise? Can’t imagine growing up without the well-loved dining table in your childhood home? 

Wedding photographer and videographer Craig Peterman recommends using heirloom furniture in your wedding design. “This is a great way to incorporate a personal touch of family history into your wedding by using a table, couch, or chair,” he says. 

From ceremony seating to your cake table, there are many ways to add an intimate, homey feel to your celebration. Sit in your favorite plush loveseat at the sweetheart table, turn an antique bookshelf into a seating chart, or set a funky armchair out for photo ops — endless opportunities await! 

Bouquet 

Your wedding bouquet offers a subtle yet special way to incorporate family heirlooms into your ceremony, keeping your loved ones close as you exchange vows and say, “I do.” 

“If you have a handkerchief, doilies, ribbon, charm, etc., a super easy and meaningful place to incorporate these is around a bouquet,” Loni Peterson of LP Creative Events confirms. “Being able to hold these special items with you as you walk down the aisle will ensure those loved ones are with you in that moment.” 

Small keepsakes, like a locket with photos or a vintage brooch, are easily tied into a bouquet’s wrap. But you could also wrap your bouquet with a sentimental swatch of fabric, like lace from a grandmother’s wedding dress or an uncle’s favorite tie. 

Invitations 

Your wedding invitations are the first teaser for your celebration, so imagine your family’s surprise when they recognize a nod to your heritage! 

“This is an area where couples can get creative and incorporate some very special heirlooms without having to actually bring them to the wedding,” explains Kelley Nudo of Momental Designs. From beloved pets to flowers from your parents’ garden, dig into your family history to find significant elements to infuse your wedding day with symbolism. 

“Our team has often illustrated family homes that have been passed down for generations,” Nudo shares. “We have received requests to develop floral patterns inspired by a china pattern that has been passed down through the family. Some couples have asked our artists to illustrate a vintage car that has been around for decades.” 

If you’re coming up short, consider creating your own! Work with an artist to design a custom family crest or motif to serve as an heirloom for future generations. 

Guest book 

Instead of a traditional blank guest book, consider using a beloved family volume, such as an old novel, a cookbook with notes in the margins, a worn atlas, or even a treasured journal. Guests can write their messages and well-wishes anywhere, turning the book into a cherished keepsake that spans generations. 

Emily Sullivan of Unique Weddings and Events shares about a couple that honored a late grandmother with a special guest book from her collection. “[She] loved jewelry, so we repurposed one of her old jewelry coffee table books as a guest book,” she shares. 

Guests will love flipping through the pages to find the perfect spot to leave a note. And the best part is that you can continue filling this heirloom guest book with new memories and love for generations to come! 

Food 

Most families have a special recipe or two that has been passed down from generation to generation. Whether it’s a hearty pot roast or freshly baked cookies, you can certainly consider family recipes as heirlooms! 

“Couples have chosen to share coveted family recipes by asking the catering staff to prepare a dish or two just as beloved family would make, which can be specifically noted on the menu,” Nudo says. (But only share the secret ingredient with your caterer confidentially!) 

If your family has a sweet tooth, lean in with a tasty dessert spread. Consider recruiting loved ones to help prepare their signature treats, making your day all the sweeter! 

“We have seen couples gift their guests with other homemade favors such as jams, wines, and other confections that have sentimental meaning to the couple,” Nudo adds. 

Food has brought people together for centuries, so it’s fitting to tie family traditions into your wedding day menu. They say food is love, so why not celebrate accordingly? 

From displaying family photos to sharing your favorite recipes, incorporating heirlooms into your wedding will make your guests feel like you’ve invited them into your home. We originally were trying to have our wedding in Massachusetts or Rhode Island but quickly became discouraged when we heard the prices. After a phone call with my sister, she mentioned a destination wedding in Puerto Rico, where Abe was born. I had always been so against destination weddings because I thought no one would come, and I was a person who valued friends and family so much that I didn’t want anyone to be missing. I swear that after this phone call, God had changed my mind on this. I stayed up late looking at PR venues online and fell in love, there was no going back. The next day, I met up with Abe and told him I was “highly considering having the wedding in Puerto Rico” to which he stood up and put both his hands up and shouted “YES!!” I then showed him two of the venues I had found and liked, and he loved my top choice, too; we booked it within that week and had our date set! June 30, 2023 in Río Grande, Puerto Rico.

I wore a form-fitted long lace dress with a customized lace edge/train. The back had a deep V, and Lacey’s edge looked like vines growing up. The straps were thin and also looked like vines growing up. The front was also a v shape. The lace was a tropical floral print that faded out to a vine print. My veil was long, and the bottom edge was lined with the same lace as the dress. The edge of the dress was to fade out to it, and the veil lace would grow in to meet it. My shoes were ivory with a low heel and pointed toe that was sheer and topped with lace from my dress. My something borrowed was a gold ring that my Vovo gave my mom when she got married.

I loved seeing Abe’s face at the end of the aisle, seeing my dad’s face at our first look, and my sister giving me a family ring as my something borrowed. Our vows were so special. I surprised Abe and said my vows in Spanish, his face was priceless! Abe also loved seeing both me and my dad crying down the aisle.

Another big theme we really wanted to make sure was prominent (besides our love for each other) was God. He has played such a major part in both of our lives and we also strongly believe that He brought us together so we wanted to make sure he was intertwined with our ceremony.

As soon as I saw that venue, I knew I wanted an antique and island styles intertwined. I immediately thought of antique gold candle holders everywhere with stacks of antique books and dried florals and palm leaves. I began researching tropical wedding bouquets and found the flower “king protea) and fell in love, I had to have them. We have always said that “our color” was olive green because it looked best on our skin tones and we both loved it, so our color choice was easy! Olive Green, Sage Green, Ivory, Beige linen, and gold.

I thrifted all of my gold candle holders and green antique books for the tables as well. I made our table numbers using gold edge see-through frames, put dried florals inside, and then used a gold paint pen to do my own calligraphy. I also DIY-ed my table numbers by doing calligraphy on big palm leaves that we picked from Abe’s Abuela’s yard. I also designed our wedding programs and invitation suite with every detail I loved because I am a graphic designer!

Our sweetheart table was both of our favorites. An ivory cheesecloth was draped over with candles all along, gold details, green antique books, the palm leaves draped over the edge and my our feet, the florals from our ceremony. We sat on a gorgeous antique wooden bench that was carved with florals and swirls. The candles had greenery and flowers melted into them, giving tropical vibes.

We both had a moment after dinner where we made sure we sat there and soaked the whole moment in. The lights above the dance floor lookied like stars, the castle-look of the venue and all our loved ones around us was just truly, truly magical, we couldn’t believe we made it!

Whether you’re blending music tastes, film genres, or preferred cuisines, finding a harmonious blend of your individual styles can set the stage for a day that truly belongs to both of you.

In any case, combining your interests shouldn’t turn into a matrimonial tug-of-war. Wedding photographer and videographer Craig Peterman encourages couples to embrace the wedding planning journey as an extension of their relationship.

“Often, I see the bride or the groom planning the wedding entirely, without enough input from both sides, which can lead to tense moments or small resentments on the day of the wedding,” Peterman shares. “This should be a fun experience shared together and a way to showcase your personalities, both together and separately.”

From blending design styles to incorporating subtle nods to your interests, keep reading to learn how to craft a wedding that celebrates the differences that make your love story one of a kind.

Talk about your priorities

Identical preferences don’t make a marriage last, but effective communication does! Wedding planning is one of the first challenges you’ll face together, so remember to approach it as a united force.

Carol Guedes of Flying Little Birds recommends starting the design process by “sharing your views, expectations, and how you envision celebrating your big day together,” ensuring both of you understand the other person’s priorities.

It doesn’t need to be a formal sit-down at the dinner table (though you’re welcome to open a bottle of wine!). House of Joy’s Samantha Leenheer suggests treating it like a casual interview with a loved one. 

“Gather all the details you could possibly pull from,” she says. “Think of asking about your favorite places to shop, go-to foods, best beverages, and even questions like how you want guests to feel at your wedding.”

You’ll likely find plenty of overlap between your preferences, but don’t shy away from the differences! Those make your relationship unlike any other, so that’s where you can lean in and find a happy balance between the two of you.

Jen Sulak of Weirdo Weddings encourages couples to keep an open mind, even when disagreements arise (and they will!). “One of you may feel stronger towards your ideas than the other; let it be what it needs to be,” she urges. “Don’t force something to happen. The simpler you keep it without forcing someone to conform, the more fun the designing process can be to include you both!”

Once you’ve worked through your preferences and ideas, it’s time to move on to the fun part: bringing it all to life with meaningful details that honor each of your interests.

Blend interests with a destination wedding

Many couples find a destination wedding the perfect middle ground to merge their design styles. Since you’ll travel to a new place, you get to choose a destination that marries your interests — and you get a vacation out of it, too!

For example, “If one is a beach lover and the other is a history buff, we recommend getting married in Tulum, Mexico, where you can walk down the aisle with your toes in the sand and then take a tour of ancient Mayan ruins nearby,” says Jen Avey of Destination Weddings Travel Group.

Likewise, if you’re trying to blend the preferences of an adventure lover and a beach bum, “an all-inclusive resort could be the perfect fit,” Avey adds. “There’s a spa and endless opportunity to relax by the beach or pool, and also plenty of excursion/watersport activities to keep you entertained.”

When you broaden your horizons to consider overseas destinations, you’ll have an easier time finding the perfect location to fit both parties’ expectations for a dream wedding.

Embrace creative subtlety

Your interests don’t have to be a loud, splashy part of your wedding design to make an impact. In other words, there’s no need to be heavy-handed with themed elements unless you want them to be a big part of your design.

“Your hobby or interest does not have to be super literal or obvious when represented in a theme or decor,” confirms Katy Padilla of Scarlet Rose Events. “Consider incorporating small elements and simple details in your table decor, guest favors, menu cards, table numbers, etc., that subtly nod to those interests that are special to you and your partner.”

Wedding photographer Rachel Maloney agrees that “the best way to combine interests is mainly in the little details rather than the larger ones.” Think “fun matching socks or ties for groomsmen and even unique earrings for bridesmaids,” she offers.

Other fun, low-key ways to tie in your interests include wedding invitations, day-of signage, song selections, ceremony readings, and signature cocktails.

Here’s another cute idea: Mary Angelini of Key Moment Films recommends “placing an ‘easter egg’ (a hidden secret feature or message) into the cake” to tease a special interest or hobby. “Incorporating hidden elements like initials, a paw print, or a ‘hidden Mickey’ can give a nod to the couple’s unique interests.” Bonus points if you surprise your partner with it when it comes time to cut the cake!

If you ascribe to a “go big or go home” approach, have at it! But if you prefer a wedding design that doesn’t feel too thematic, don’t be afraid to infuse your personalities through small, subtle details throughout the day.

Design a custom emblem

What better way to blend your interests than with a custom design? While initial monograms have a long history in the wedding industry, graphic designers have gotten more creative with custom wedding logos that capture the essence of your joining.

“I have seen clients incorporate their quirks into their wedding designs and invitations by camouflaging them into the backgrounds or through monograms,” adds Loni Peterson of LP Creative Events. “For example, if you love dinosaurs, we can create a negative space design that, from a distance, looks artistic, but up close, people can decipher the dino!”

Kelley Nudo of Momental Designs agrees, noting that a custom monogram crest can be carried through the stationery and decor for a consistent wedding design. 

“The monogram crest can essentially serve as branding for the wedding,” she explains. “It can also pay homage to the interests of the couple. We have created custom monogram crests that include food icons, beach imagery, and even the couple’s pets. The options are limitless when choosing personalized elements.”

The best part? Your custom emblem design will last long past your wedding! Once you’re married, you can incorporate it into your home decor, stationery, and other areas where you want a sweet reminder of your big day.

At first glance, merging two distinct sets of preferences might seem daunting — especially if your tastes differ significantly. However, with the right professionals in your corner, pulling off such a feat is easy! Seasoned vendors have encountered various styles, themes, and challenges, giving them the expertise to handle whatever your big day requires. “Find a planner who is excited to bring your ideas to life and help you create a compelling wedding creative brief with an inspo board,” urges Vijay Goel of Bite Catering Couture. “You need a planner and venue that are excited about creative concepts and have a flexible approach that allows for interesting elements to be expressed.”

My favorite season, fall, and an array of my favorite colors inspired us. It melded well with the changing colors of the leaves as well as the crisp weather that we really love! Visiting the venue many times while on our previous visits to the property, we had a lot of inspiration on how to make our vision come to life there.

I wore a custom, one-of-a-kind, Prina Tornai designed dress. I went to Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City, where I tried on dresses and met Pnina. We had a sketch drawn up and came back for a week’s worth of fitting!

Morgan Marie loved the trip down in the elevator to the first look, and the first look was very special for us both. Lawson loved seeing Morgan Marie coming down the aisle, as well as seeing her in the window as the music started. The first dance was an incredible memory. Even though the tempo was half the speed we practiced for and we danced for 8 minutes!

Some of our favorite details were the pops of red and orange in Lawson’s tie and Morgan Marie’s bouquet matching her ruby necklace. We loved the string quartet, the floral arrangements, and the lanterns on the aisle.

We handmade the save the dates and invitations. We made the signature drink sign as well as seating arrangement signs for the reception and ceremony. We also made menus that were placed on the plates before dinner. And a ring pillow harness for our ring bearer/dog, Poppy!

Our advice? Have fun and be creative with your planning. Don’t be afraid to pick something you’ve never seen or try to add a personal touch.

I wanted to feel like a princess without any of the stuffiness. We fell in love with the Commodore Perry when we visited it because we felt transported out of Austin while staying in the heart of the city. With a venue like the Commodore, the details were easy to fill in; I wanted flowers that enhanced the garden, a band that could transform the Commodore’s chapel and food that everyone would enjoy.

I wore Monique Lhuillier, the Theodora gown, and I purchased it at Neiman Marcus Bridal in Dallas, TX. I always knew I wanted a ballgown dress, and I have always loved Monique. Funny story — I didn’t pick the dress out! My Sales Associate (shoutout Kennedy!!) picked it out. As I was pulling it on, she mentioned it was a drop waist. My cousin and I locked eyes in the mirror and made a face as if to say, “No way is a drop waist gown going to look good on me.” And then — like magic — it was stunning on me. I fell instantly in love.

I DIY’ed my wedding programs and our party favors/seating assignments. My family is Greek, and I wanted to pay homage to that side of me, so I hand-filled glass bottled with Greek olive oil (called Mr. Papou’s, which felt like a sweet tribute to my late Papou who I [and all of my family] loved so dearly). My mom used a hair dryer to shrink-wrap all of the black labels on! I made a custom stamp online of our wedding crest and a custom stamp of a little slogan (“Opa! Enjoy a taste of the homeland”), and I hand-stamped every single card and attached it to the bottles. I did the whole project with my mom and cousin, and it was such a fun Saturday — so memorable.

I picked my florist (Antonio Bond, an absolute artist) because of his art and his personality, and I let him have a lot of freedom with the pieces after we had walked through the shop together and pointed out colors/flowers I liked, etc. I’m so glad I let him have creative control because I was just as surprised as everyone on the final day about the flowers, and it was a truly beautiful surprise. No centerpiece was the same!! I told him I wanted the head table to look like you stumbled onto a fairy feast in the woods, and I think he nailed that.

Don’t feel pressured to do things the way that everyone else is doing it. It’s so easy to consume so many stories via social media about other people’s weddings. But all that matters is what brings you joy. No matter where you get married or what you wear, you and your partner will be the most beautiful people there. And everyone will have a good time because they are there to celebrate y’all!!

Regardless of your favorite genres, the right design decisions can make your big day feel straight from the pages of a romance novel. From your venue to your menu, there are many ways to incorporate your love of reading into your wedding day. Here are seven ideas to inspire any bookworm!

Set the scene

Save-the-dates and invitations allow couples to tease their wedding theme, so don’t be shy about infusing your stationery with lit-inspired details. 

Kelley Nudo of Momental Designs recommends “using both words and imagery inspired by the chosen literature” for a fully immersive experience. 

“Wedding invitations can give a subtle nod to the couple’s favorite story or novel by taking excerpts or quotes from the book and incorporating them into the invitation suite on items such as paper wraps, accent tags, or envelope liners,” she confirms.

For example, lovers of Jane Austen may incorporate silhouettes into their invitations, while Fourth Wing fans can include dragon artwork. Or, if you bonded over Lord of the Rings, you might add a secret message in Elvish that only Tolkien fans will understand. This is your chance to have fun and go all out with your passion for books!

Select a storybook venue

Your wedding venue defines the look and feel of your celebration, so consider spaces that fit into your thematic vision. If you have a particular book, series, or author in mind, Story Alley Photography’s Monica Garcia suggests looking for a venue that connects.

For instance, Harry Potter fans may consider a destination wedding at Alnwick Castle, which was used for exterior shots of Hogwarts in the film series. “If you can find a venue with historical or literary significance, you’ll set the mood for your theme wedding from the moment your guests walk through the doors,” Garcia confirms.

Or, find a venue that matches a specific vibe from your preferred literature, like a grand mansion for a Gatsby wedding or a whimsical garden grove akin to the Shire.

Garcia notes that couples shouldn’t overlook more obvious venues for readers either. “If you’re a book-loving couple, having your wedding at a library or a bookstore would be a fun way to instantly convey a literary theme to your guests,” she affirms. “Some libraries are grand, historic, and just as awe-inspiring as any church.”

In any case, most venues can be transformed into a storybook setting with the right decor and lighting. If you can’t find the perfect venue, trust that your vendor team is ready to bring your vision to life in any space.

Add it to your ceremony

It’s common to include readings in your ceremony, but it doesn’t have to be a favorite poem or scripture. Jen Sulak of Weirdo Weddings encourages couples to pull from their favorite novels for a literature-themed wedding.

“Consider reading a passage from your book in the vows or having someone you love read a paragraph,” she says, recommending a physical book instead of a tablet or e-reader. “Holding the actual book makes it really special! Book lovers understand the difference between holding the pages or flipping a digital screen.”

To make it even more meaningful, you could get a special edition to inscribe with your wedding date and sweet notes to each other for a wedding keepsake. Don’t worry — you can still take your Kindles on the honeymoon!

Decorate with literature-inspired pieces

Now, it wouldn’t be a wedding of bookworms without decor that highlights your shared love of reading! There are countless elements of your day-of design to consider, so you have plenty of opportunities to get creative with your favorite stories.

For a classic touch, “consider bookmarks or old-school card catalog entries as clever escort cards for your guests,” wedding photographer Lynne Reznick offers. “The bookmarks can be displayed or set at each seat, and using a card catalog is a fun, experiential way for guests to find their tables!”

Nicole Chan of Nicole Chan Photo & Video notes that couples can also incorporate favorite books and quotes as part of the table numbers and place settings. Better yet, “select books that are meaningful to you and use them as table names,” she says. “It’s a bonus if you’re able to find the books and use them as part of the centerpiece decor.”

Drawing inspiration from literature isn’t limited only to books! If you want a more artistic approach, look for other props that fit the theme. “Elements like calligraphy stations or old typewriters can channel creative energy that can tie into the feel of your event,” adds Vijay Goel of Bite Catering Couture.

Whether you source from your personal collection or scour a used bookstore, make sure the copies you use as decor are clean, and consider sticking to colors that match your wedding palette. (Though it’s your day, so you make the rules!)

Spice up your menu

A culinary experience fit for your favorite book characters will add to your guests’ immersion, whether they’re enjoying hors d’oeuvres or grabbing a drink from the bar.

“Give the entire menu a literary theme with dishes and drinks named after a book or character,” Garcia suggests. “Or, include iconic dishes from your favorite story. A wedding inspired by Jane Austen, for example, wouldn’t be complete without including the ‘exemplary vegetable,’ the potato. For Harry Potter fans, include a treacle tart.”

Other fun ideas include Anne Shirley’s favorite raspberry cordial, Hogsmeade’s famed butterbeer, or a spread of tea and tarts that would make the Mad Hatter proud.

Rethink your favors

Skip the mints and matchboxes — if you want to hand out favors that are both personal and useful, why not send your guests home with a book of their choice?

Megan & Kenneth’s Megan Breukelman shares about a couple that hosted a book bar in place of traditional wedding favors. “They collaborated with a local bookstore to line up their favorite books for their guests to choose from and take home,” she shares. “The couple also had bookmarks that were unique to their wedding for guests to put into the books. Guests have raved about it long after the wedding.”

In addition to books or personalized bookmarks, you can also find inspiration from the last section by giving out literary sweet treats as favors. Think chocolate frogs, Turkish delight, or gourmet “Eat Me” cookies!

Wear your favorite books

You probably won’t have time to read on your wedding day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your favorite novel close! Wedding photographer Melani Lust recommends incorporating literary elements into your wedding day attire.

“I loved this purse that one of our brides had custom-made as a beautiful cover of Pride & Prejudice,” she shares. “I could see creating your favorite literary covers for members of the wedding party to carry in place their floral bouquets.”

You could also incorporate paper flowers made of book pages, which can be a fun craft for DIY couples. Or, if you want to take a different approach, consider dressing in a way that ties into the overall aesthetic of your favorite genre, series, or book.

“Let your love for literature shine in what you wear and how you capture the day,” encourages Craig Peterman of Craig Peterman Photography & Videography. “Dress in styles inspired by your chosen book’s era or aesthetic. Work with your photographer to plan shots that highlight your theme, like reading your vows from a beautifully bound book or posing with literary props.”

For instance, Bridgerton brides can opt for a square neckline to embrace Regency-era fashion, whereas LOTR fans may prefer a flowy gown inspired by Arwen’s style. But you don’t have to go big to make a statement. Subtle details—like a Mockingjay pin or Velaris’ stars in your hair—can be a low-key way to honor your favorite stories!

Let your big day be the prologue to a love story that unfolds with every new chapter! Just as a great book captivates its readers, your wedding (and marriage!) will be filled with beautiful moments that make your story uniquely yours.

There are many ways to make your wedding ceremony feel like a celebration tailor-made for your love story. Sharing heartfelt vows, selecting meaningful songs, including pets, and incorporating rituals are all excellent opportunities to add a personal touch. But don’t overlook the power of a hand-picked reading delivered by a loved one!

“Ceremony readings are a great opportunity to really let your personalities shine,” explains Lynne Reznick of Lynne Reznick Photography. They’re also “a lovely way to include family members or dear friends who are not in your wedding party.”

So, if you want to give your grandmother, cousin, or brother-in-law a special role, you can’t go wrong by asking them to share a reading at the ceremony.

That leads to the question: How do you pick a reading that captures your shared love? While there are countless sources to draw inspiration, Orsella Hughes of Serenity Ceremonies by Rev. Orsella notes that whatever you choose “should be in alignment with your beliefs, your energy, and your intentions for the ceremony.”

Whether you want to make the room laugh out loud or bring tears to everyone’s eyes, the right readings can set the tone for your wedding and future marriage. So, as you plan your ceremony, keep these tips in mind to find the poems, verses, excerpts, quotes, or lyrics that speak to your heart.

Incorporate your favorites

There’s no better way to personalize your wedding than by looking to your life together for inspiration. Look to your favorite authors, poets, philosophers, and musicians for ideas.

“Pull readings from the writings or speeches of people you love to listen to or read from,” suggests Brian Franklin of Vows & Speeches. “We recently wrote a ceremony script that pulled romantic lyrics from Bruce Springsteen, and have done the same with Taylor Swift and Beyonce.”

Reznick also recommends “turning to your favorite movies, songs, and books for quotes you love and that inspire you.” Perhaps it’s the movie you saw on your first date or a book you read together — relive your love story together and highlight special details that stand out to you.

Mary Angelini of Key Moment Films adds, “a reading doesn’t have to be about love at all — it can pull from a part of your history or talk about your shared personal beliefs.” So, if you have a favorite piece of scripture or literature that feels right, don’t hold back if it doesn’t seem overtly romantic. The only thing that matters is its meaningfulness to you!

Use an original piece

If nothing seems to resonate with you, consider opting for a reading written just for your ceremony. You’ll get to tailor the message to fit your desires, and you’ll love knowing it’s a never-before-heard reading made just for your wedding.

Plan a romantic date night with your partner to craft a passage together over dinner and wine. Or, if writing isn’t your thing, “search for local poets or writers to create a piece of literature curated for your love,” Hughes suggests. 

Alternatively, Nora Sheils of Rock Paper Coin and Bridal Bliss suggests looking to your loved ones if you know a master wordsmith. “Ask them to write a poem just for you that you can frame after the wedding,” she says. Or, for a bit of levity, “don’t be afraid to add humor by asking that light-hearted friend who knows how to keep everyone laughing!”

If you plan to hire a pro or ask a loved one, make sure to set expectations for the final result. Explain the intended message for your reading and provide specific details about what to include (and what to leave out!). It’s also wise to request with plenty of notice, allowing time to review and adjust as needed.

Keep them short and sweet

It might be challenging to narrow your selections when so many lovely options are at your fingertips. But Cathy O’Connell of COJ Events assures that less is more when it comes to ceremony readings. “Two to three are plenty, although one is just fine, too,” she states.

Too many readings can impede the flow of your ceremony, leading to delays in your overall timeline and making your cocktail hour and reception feel rushed. Plus, “you risk losing guests’ attention and undercutting the meaning behind the readings you choose,” Reznick adds.

As for length, Angelini recommends keeping each reading to two minutes. “It’s typically substantial enough to convey its message but not so long that it disrupts the flow of the ceremony or causes guests to become restless,” she explains. That’s why scripture and poetry are common choices, as they are designed to express much meaning in a compact format.

Can’t bear to leave out a lengthy piece you love? “If you have one that is longer, consider doing fewer readings,” O’Connell adds.

If you’re concerned about the length of your ceremony, lean on the pros for support. Your planner and officiant can help you create a script and timeline that includes your must-haves without pushing back the rest of your wedding day. They’ll also help you stay on pace on the big day!

There is no “right” or “wrong” choice for your ceremony reading. And with unlimited options out there to choose from, you’ll no doubt find the perfect selection for your big day. “Just make sure it is relevant to your love and your commitment to each other, but most importantly, that it resonates profoundly with you,” says Juls Sharpley of Juls Sharpley Events.

The main inspiration for this shoot was a dinner table at a hotel in Florence, Italy. Ness was vacationing with her husband when she found herself enchanted by the persimmon-patterned tablecloth and etched lace ceramic plates. That moment was rich in old-world romance. While pulling together the look for the shoot, that Italian memory fused with other recent color inspiration of corals and oranges. Instead of neutrals, we see the Boathouse color story of aquas and seafoam melt into the corals and oranges in a perfect harmony of “opposites attract.” The bricks and tiles of the boathouse are contrasted with the layered tulle ballgown, as soft as the filtered lighting. The blush-toned dress flounces through the grandiose hallways as the bride enjoys moments at her whimsical table setting and, later, floats along the waterway.
