1943 Poolside Glamour

This image above is from a magazine from 1943 and as always you can click the image to enlarge. The swimsuits (and models) are all lovely, the one on the right is a pink Jantzen two piece, the middle two are possibly Catalina and the one that Ester is wearing? That's a Cole of California, and she's got the matching skirt in her hands. And that iconic suit, one of my favorites, was designed by Margit Fellegi. Esthers' suit has a small print pattern to it.

And the reason I share this with you today is look at the lovely Yvonne De Carlo, I could swear that's the same suit, only the one Yvonne is sporting has a long skirt and it looks as if there is no pattern to the orange fabric. And I'll take a pair of those shoes that Lynn Bari is wearing above and pair them with that fabulous suit. Which one is your favorite?

Isn't she pretty? This is Daphne Selfe in the 1950s. She is still modeling now in her 80s and is considered Britain's oldest supermodel. I applaud this woman, she has never had any cosmetic surgery and considers her hair her fortune.

The Merry Widow, the garter belt, the girdle, stockings, and numerous other confining, uncomfortable, and erotic relics of our past are glorified in this exhibition of black and white photographs by Lillian Bassman. Originally seen in advertisements and Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, Bassman has transformed her work into mysterious, evocative images with her signature darkroom manipulation, highlighting her photographs with light and shadow to create unique works of art. Lillian Bassman’s career as a photographer began at Harper’s Bazaar in 1948 working for the great art director Alexey Brodovitch. In the early 1990’s Bassman manipulated these early images in the darkroom and transformed them through bleaching and blurring techniques into original works of art, investing them with poetry and glamour. notice the progression from yesterday? The 1940s were conserving fabric for the war years and may of the styles we showed were two pieces, not so with the 1950s, many many one pieces and a few two pieces. We could go on and on with the images, but that's a good variety to give some eye candy for 1950s Cole of California ads. With one major exception, Christian Dior.

Christian Dior designed and debuted a swimsuit collection for Cole of California in 1955. At first Dior was reluctant, pleading that he knew nothing of swimwear, to which Cole responded, "you're a designer aren't you? So design." Unable to argue with this, Dior complied and produced his one and only swimwear collection. His ensembles of floral printed swimsuits with halter necks and ties around the waist, with marching billowing beach coats for wearing over the top, followed his New Look silhouette.

Two models pose in Christian Dior beachwear in 1955. The sitting model wears a ribbed bathing suit with a halter neckline and flared skirt, which would have been worn for swimming. The standing girl is in a white poplin blouse designed to be worn over the top.

We're spending some time this week sharing some of our Cole of California archives. I say some, because I'm sure I've posted a few of these before, and I have to keep some surprises for the future to share right? Right! So let's start in the 1940s.

I want this suit! Look at that print. And what is that she has her hand on? I'll be it's a skirt! Note the reference to the parachute in the copy, and again called out below.

This is the Swoon Suit that came out in 1944, you can read more about this particular suit in our Swoon Suit post. It really is an iconic piece. The war years had a definite impact on swimwear .Cole of California produced parachutes for soldiers, available in 'parachute colors' that laced up the sides, thereby conforming to the wartime regulations on he use of rubber and fabric.

Note the cut out midriff? That's Margit's design. Margit Fellegi was the head designer at Cole of California from 1946 - 1972. That a pretty long reign. She is credited with many fine achievements at Cole. We've written an article on Margit and her design innovations which you can find on our website here.

What the heck? Color me confused. This image is from 1967 for Brunswick wool yarn. No mention in the copy about swimming, summer, sport, etc. So why the swim cap? Does it help to sell the product? Oh the grails we have. I've been a-lookin and a-searchin but can't seem to find either of these. Can anyone help me? I'd really prefer the top one from 1931. Both of those prints are divine, and I like the back view too. Ah the quest continues. And another thing, I've always seemed to think that the correct spelling of a beach pyjama was with a 'y'. But perhaps they are in fact interchangeable? Can anyone clarify for me?

Last weekend one of my fabulous finds was this framed print of a Vogue cover from July 1, 1919.

A woman in a black dress, white turban, and printed pink scarf holds an orange umbrella while walking in the surf. Helen Dryden's elaborately imagined beach scene appeared on the July 1, 1919, cover of Vogue.

It's pretty special to me.

Ok, all I need now is a beach house. I've got plenty of artwork and swimsuits to hang!

PRECIOUS BABY LEARNS TO SWIM

Eleven month old Sherry Lynn Whitford can also dive, even though she is still unable to walk.

The wide eyed infant scooting through the water is the worlds most precious swimmer. She can't walk but she can swim several times a day as she dog paddles across a 30 foot swimming pool in Los Angeles. Sherry Lynn revealed aquatic talent at the age of 6 weeks, and early instruction consisted of teaching her to use her arms for propulsion. She caught on after they were moved back and forth some 500 times, and she was able to swim for the first time at the age of 7 months.

Baby Sherry Lynn Whitford dives 2 feet under water, keeping eyes wide open as she gets ready to paddle back to the surface.

Diving was possible after Sherry Lynn had learned to extend her arms to break the shock of hitting water. Instructor Crystal Scarborough, who is Sherry Lynn's cousin, considers her the most promising of 40-odd babies she has taught to swim and thinks she is a sure bet for the 1964 Olympics.

Baby dives by being dropped into the water headfirst by Miss Scarborough. To get into the pool by herself she sits on the edge and simply flops off.

Look at those swimsuits!

Baby swims, she has no sense of direction but will follow instructor. not strong enough to raise up for a gulp of air, she crosses the pool on one breath.

Right now exactly one third of Sherry Lynn's vocabulary concerns swimming. She says "Mama," Dada," - "dive."

Marilyn Makes Any Outfit Look Fabulous!

Marilyn Monrore can make absolutely anything look good. Here she is wearing an outfit made of burlap potato sacks and she looks as captivating as ever.

Back in the early years during world war II, our fore mothers would use feedsacks as fabric and fashion them into clothes. Feedsacks have a whole interesting history of their own.

I found Sharons Antiques on line and they offer a simply fabulous variety of feedsack fabrics. I'm very very tempted to choose one of my vintage patterns over at Glamourstitch and try my hand at this. What would you make?

Vintage 40s Gantner Coldfire 'Glo Suit' - A Patents Tale

Fabulousness, right? I'm so excited to share this two piece high waist swim suit with you. This suit dates to the late 1940s and was made by Gantner. Many people think that these bright neon colors only came out in the 1980s, but they have been around for much longer than that. I've been curious about the process, color and naming of this suit so I was tickled 'pink' when I looked up the trademark patents on the label and found some fabulous information.

The patent information is available on line, I had to go install an applet to make the images work, and then voila, I was able to copy and show the info to you here. As always, you can click on the image to enlarge it.

There are two patents on this suit, we focus on only one of them today. A few snippets from the information provided:

"Another object of invention is a swimming suit having one or more panels of a luminescent fluorescent or a phosphorescent material."

"Inexpensive to manufacture, attractive and striking appearance, increased visibility in and out of water, and a resulting increase in safety factor."

"Because the use of a florescent material as a substantial part of the garment, ultra violet light rays received by the material are converted into visible light, with the result that the converted rays are given off by the material as added illumination."

And they were fairly inexpensive in 1948.

The other patent explains the process and fabric in more detail. So there you go, perhaps more info than you ever wanted, but the info is there if you need it. And for gals like me, I just love it and get all fired up! We just listed this swimsuit on Glamoursurf, go have a gander. Oh, and did I forget to mention that the sides of the suit are adjustable?

I've been searching and searching for the artist in this picture. Yes, it's classic Veruschka, and I love her outfit by the way. Does anyone know who the artist who is painting her is? I know the image is from 1967.

Veruschka took many shots in body paint and got quite famous for it. Here is a fabulous video of her in Africa with Peter Beard. Beautiful body paint here.

Two images of Marilyn, from the same shoot. Frank Powolny is credited with the top image so I can only assume the back view of Marilyn is the second picture is by him as well.

But that suit with the little bubble bow on the back. I want to learn more about that. Cute right? I don't think I've ever come across anything like that before, but it sure is flirty and feminine at the same time. What do you think?

Put Two Promises Together

It's 1963, and check out the undergarments that women wore. The bullet style bra and that high waist long line pantie girdle. These were the correct foundations to wear with 60's fashion to keep you in the shape you want but also to provide the silhouette that 1960s fashions needed. This ad is for the Promise Bra and Promise High Waist by Poirette.

"Millions of women trust the power of a Promise-High -Waist to slim away inches, smooth away figure imperfections. Here's another Poirette ad from 1961 showing the undergarments and then fully clothed

The Piorette Promise was trademarked in 1951, but has since expired. The "Promise" term did start being used in the 50's Here's another ad from 1952.

So Poirette successfully used the promise trademark for quite a number of years and eventually abandoned it. But, it really does help to wear the proper foundation garments under your vintage fashions, promise.

1963 - Follow The Sun in a Lee Swimsuit

Here's a fun ad from 1963 for Lee Swimsuits. It identifies the fabric as Creslan knit, a miracle of figure moulding. An interesting side tidbit when researching Creslan on Wikipedia, I found out it's an Acrylic fiber which has since ceased production in the US.

"All US producers have ended production. Former U.S. brands of acrylic were Acrilan (Monsanto), Creslan (American Cyanamid), and Orlon (DuPont). Other brand names that are still in use include Dralon (Dralon GmbH)."

Love the high waist two piece in white, about $12.00 in 1963 ($90.00 in today's dollar). I'm seeing lots of this type of high waist swimsuit being reproduced from today's manufacturers as well, but I prefer the original vintage garments. Something about the fabric, the shapes, the support, the figure enhancing fit and the definitive silhouettes of the periods just can't be matched today.

This is a small icon from the ad above. Fun right? This will make it's way somehow into something I do soon.
