Location: Glasgow Green/City Centre/West End

Tickets: Free to view. No tickets required.

The Road Race National Championships are coming to Glasgow for the first time ever!

Get yourself and the kids out for a few hours this June to see some of the UK’s elite cyclists taking part in the British Cycling National Road Race Championships; the biggest single day road race on the British calendar.

In 2013, for the first time in its history, the National Road Race Championships will take place in the centre of Glasgow with much of the racing taking part in the heart of the city, utilising part of the proposed course for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and providing a spectacular setting for the racing.

The 14.2km race circuit starts in Glasgow Green, going through the city centre to Kelvingrove Park and Byres Rd, and then back to Glasgow Green via the city centre once again. Both the men’s and women’s races take place on Sunday 23rd June with the women covering a total distance of 112km (8 laps) and the men a distance of 182km (13 laps).

The race brings with it the prospect of seeing elite cyclists such as Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, Lizzie Armistead and Kayleigh Brogan.

When to watch

The Road Race will take place on Sunday 23rd June. The Women’s race will start at 0930hrs and finish at 1300hrs approximately and there will be an anticipated 60 riders completing 8 laps covering a total distance of 112km.

The men’s race will start at 1330hrs and finish at 1730hrs approximately and there will be an anticipated 140 riders completing 13 laps of a 14.2K route.

Where to watch

Suggested viewing areas are within Glasgow Green (where the races start and end) or within Kelvingrove Park which the race goes through for almost a kilometer. Of course you can potentially view it at any point of the route. But be warned, thousands of people are expected to line the race route!

Road closures

Glasgow is the first major UK city to host the prestigious National Road Race Championships on an entirely city-based course. As a result of this great opportunity for residents and visitotrs to see the UK’s fastest male and female riders in action, some road closures and disruption to normal services will occur.

Residents and businesses on and around the road course route will be contacted directly by Glasgow City Council to advise of road closures, alternative parking and access arrangements, and any changes to council services.

For more information please visit the Glasgow City Council website. As final road closure plans are put in place, the council website will provide information regarding road closures and disruption, and you will be able to review details of alternative routes and parking.

Route map

Please find below the 2013 Road Race Championship route map, highlighng suggested spectator areas for you to watch the action. You can also download a pdf of the route from glasgowlife.org.uk.

As has been proven in outdoor festivals in many cultural capitals around the world, Shakespeare plays work very well in the open air. Glasgow’s beautiful Botanic Gardens provide the perfect backdrop for just such an event.

In these spectacular, historic and fragrant grounds, King Lear, Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing and Henry V have been performed to enthralled audiences and critical acclaim.

Glasgow Repertory Company’s annual outdoor Shakespeare festival is the only one of its kind in Scotland. 2013 will see the Bard celebrate their 12th year with an exciting programme of productions.

Bard in the Botanics returns in 2013 with a host of new productions that see some of Shakespeare’s most vivid creations embark on physical and emotional journeys that lead them into a new world and change their lives forever.

This year, the Bard will be performing Othello (directed by Gordon Barr), Much Ado About Nothing (directed by Gordon Barr), and Julius Caesar (directed by Jennifer Dick).

Othello With its racing, concentrated plot and intense dramatic detail, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most heartbreaking tragedies, a tale of uncontrollable jealousy, deception and murder driven by one of theatre’s greatest villains.

Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeare’s wittiest comedy gets a thoroughly modern makeover as two of his most famous characters are recreated as male couple Benedick and Bertram and this, the original rom com, is given a very 21st century twist.

Julius Caesar Performed in the intimate surroundings of the Kibble Palace Glasshouse by a cast of four, this electric new production offers you the chance to get up and close and personal with the ultimate political thriller.

Some outdoor performances can involve a lengthy walk through the grounds, but picnic baskets are available to sustain the hungry theatre-goer.

Performances in the main botanic gardens

Performances of both Othello and Much Ado About Nothing start at 7.45pm. There are no performances on Sunday or Monday evenings throughout the festival.

19th June – 6th July: Othello

10th July – 27th July: Much Ado About Nothing

Performances in the Kibble Palace Glasshouse

Performances of Julius Caesar start at 8pm. There are no performances on Sunday or Monday evenings throughout the festival.
