Fused Glass "Happy Stone" Pendants with a Stainless Steel Wire Finish

20 Years ago I took my first class in glass fusing with Jaunita (no this is not a typo) Deck at the Art Studio in Cape Coral. One of my friends in class, Lucille S. played with stacking glass - fused it - cut it apart and fused it again standing on edge. Whenever I see this technique shown online, I remember our beautiful stones we created. Lucille also was an avid wire wrapper and tried to teach me some wire wrapping. But back then the traditional style of wire wrapping was too ornate for my taste.

Now 20 years later - and 20 years older - sorry I meant wiser - I see myself adding more and more wire to my glass. Finally I found a way to use those stones in Jewelry. Since we can not predict their outcome, I like to call them:

"Happy Stones"

It took me only 50 yards of stainless steel wire of trial and error.

But I think I found a way that holds the stone.

And also adds interest to the piece without taking away from the beauty of the "Happy Stone".

And yes, I will show the how to technique in any of my classes. Just ask for the

A different way to use your Laser-Printed Decals!

The last few weeks I experimented a bit with Decals! And with the technique I will show you below, you can use any laser printer on our decal paper.

Are you trying to add a realistic element to your glass work but are not really good in free hand drawing? Here is what you can do. With transparent glass you can place any printed design under your glass and follow the lines with some high fire enamel paint.

I'm using Multi Pens - they fire glossy even at around 1400 degrees and are easy to apply. But what can you do when you want to transfer a design onto an opaque glass?

To use this technique, you can actually print your design on the laser decal paper with any laser printer, since you do not want to retain the actual print.

Print your design on a sheet of Laser Decal Paper

Soak the decal for a few seconds in clean water

Transfer the decal to your glass - carefully - do not rip the fine transparent film. I used a single layer of Wissmach Prisma glass, in the size of 10" x 8".

Shake the paint in your multi pen. Our multi pens come with fine metal tips. But I found an even better bottle at a craft shop and am now transferring the enamel paint from the big bottle to the little one. If the paint is too thick, you can add a few drops of water.

Shake well and start applying the paint. Keep the tip on the design while following the lines.

When you are done put a pin in the metal tip to keep it free of paint. If you forget, the paint gets really hard and you might not be able to clean it out again.

Place your glass on a Kaiser Lee Board Mold and fuse and shape it in one firing.

600° F to 1000°F hold :10

Full to 1430°F hold :10

Full to 950°F hold :45

100°F to 700°F hold 0

Step Down Bowl Project with Wissmach Red and Kaiser Lee Board

Materials

Wissmach glass, 3 mm in 90-01 Clear, 90-10 Orange/Red, 90-13 Dark Red, 90-09 Violet, 90-03 white
A few Vitrigraph stringers (instructions are in the Fuse It Book which comes with the kit I have linked to at the end of this tutorial)
Multi Pen Glass Enamel
Kaiser Lee Board Multi Tasking Mold, KLB kiln shelf and 8 small stoneware tiles.
Kiln Wash Powder

Step 1

Set up your mold and measure the outside perimeter to determine the size for your clear glass base. I used an 8” x 9” x 1” KL-board to create this step down mold. Kaiser Lee Board does not need to be kiln washed, but you should give it a nice dusting with kiln wash powder. You will find a lot more information about this type of mold set up in our Multi Tasking E-book which you can order by itself or in a kit with Kaiser Lee Board.

Step 2

Cut your design elements and place them on the cleaned clear base glass. I used the multi pen with the little application bottle and added some dots to my flower petals and used the groziers to make a small amount of frit.

Step 3

Place your mold set up in the kiln and place your designed clear glass on top and full fuse and slump in one firing. This is one of the advantages you have with molds made from fiber. This process works as long as you do not stretch the glass more than 3/4”.

Hot Tip

When you fire red glass, we recommend a full fuse temperature not higher than 1420°F (770°C).

In this class you will have the opportunity to make your own mold from an 1" x 8" x 8" KLB and create your own shape for a technique that is known as open face casting. We will discuss the shape options and how to finish them, to create beautiful free standing sculptures. When you make shapes with KLB you will find that you can make them with very little cold working effort.

2. Kaiser Lee Board Mold Making - Dec. 10, 2016

In this class we will provide you with a 1" x 12" x 12" piece of Kaiser Lee Board and you will learn how to make the most versatile molds for your projects. Yes, you heard right, you will make several molds out of one piece of board and by combining them you can make an array of projects. You can bring your own design or choose one of ours. Each Kaiser Lee Board can be carved and shaped so each piece will be one of a kind and truly your own mold. KLB is re-usable countless times and should you get tired of the same old, you can re-vamp it by carving away from it or adding a few more pieces of KLB and make it into a complete different project.

3. Design your own Glass - January 14, 2017

First you will choose the mold for a final project, than we will provide you with glass design elements like frit, powders, glass lace, glass paints and stringers so that you can design your own art glass. Your piece will be fired in our studio on our molds you will be able to pick up your finished art work the next day.

4. Drape Baskets - February 11, 2017

This class is for those of you who own a kiln and like to make the most versatile drape mold system on the market. Yes, I'm talking about our drape triangles. You will make your own triangles and than I will show you how to create interesting baskets with pre-shaped strips of glass.

5. Dishes for Foodies - March 11, 2017

In this class we offer tow options: Option one, you can make your dream mold for your dream dish and create it while you are here (one 1" x 8" x 8" KL-board is included in your price).

Option two is, you can use 2 of my molds and create a set of two dishes. If you like to add more dishes to the set you can do so for an additional fee.

6. Make a Lamp - April 22, 2017

Right now I'm working on a new webinar about lamps and light objects. It is a fascinating theme and we will see which additional ideas I have developed until then. You will definitely learn how to create a light object from scratch. But we can also help you to realize a ceiling lamp or a chandelier.

Yesterday I got a phone call from M., an artist who loves her Microwave kiln so much that she even bought the next size up. I personally have not gotten into the business of Microwave kilns. They were not around when I bought my first kiln and I guess after you own your first "real" kiln it is kind of difficult to deal with a Microwave kiln. So this article is not about selling any Microwave kilns. It is for those of you who are already working with them and who would like to add some more fun to their creativity. M. told me that she was searching all over the internet for a mold material that would be working in a microwave kiln and she was very close to giving up when she found our website.

We got to talking and I was amazed about her enthusiasm and how much fun she had with her little kiln. M. wanted to know if you could carve shapes into the board to cast glass pendants. And of course my answer was yes. But you can also carve the board so that you can add texture to your creations. Kaiser Lee Board does not absorb any heat and it also will help to insulate your glass a bit during the cooling process. So you won't crack any molds and the best part, you can cut the board any size that would fit your kiln.

But the board alone does not make any exciting glass pieces and since we have so many small glass pieces in our store, we put her a little "Goodie Box" together.

I will keep close contact to M. to see what she will come up with and hopefully she will share some of her pictures with us.

And if you like, we can assemble one for you as well.

Glass Fusing Tutorial - Working with Wissmach Luminescent Glass

In today’s project I will demonstrate how Wissmach Luminescent Glass™ behaves in different firing situation. Our preferred method is the reversed fusing. I have to admit, since we can full fuse and slump in one firing when using Kaiser Lee Board™, the luminescent coating stays on very reliably in this type of firing.

This is the KL-board mold set up for the “reversed” plate. I used a carved board and added two building blocks to each side. The building blocks are carved down on an angle which will create the curved up “handle” for the plate.

The luminescent coating does not act like a release (only irid and dichro coating do not stick to KLB) therefore we recommend either shelf paper or kiln wash powder. Since we are working with a relief, I prefer Thinfire™ paper over Papyrus™ paper.

Cut a piece of Clear (COE 96) Glass the size of the mold (18” x 9”) and a piece of Thinfire™ paper the same size as your clear glass. Now cut several pieces of Wissmach Luminescent™ in the same COE (96). Place the paper on the mold and then place your luminescent pieces, luminescent side down, on to the paper. When you are happy with your design place the clear glass on top and fire your plate. I fused my plate at 1425 °F (770°C).

This sample shows a black luminescent fired coated side up with a little square of clear in the center. In darker colors the luminescent coating seems to stay better. The clear glass cover in the center is a good sample on how the luminescent vanishes when covered with clear glass or any other colored glass.

While reversed fusing will give you the best sparkle for your money, I also love to use the lighter transparent colors. I fire them luminescent side toward the mold or shelf and it will shimmer through to the top.

Powder Wafers™ Experiment with Kaiser-Lee Board

When I first saw the Powder Wafers™ glue film from NO DAYS I liked the idea of being able to create any shape in glass that you could cut out of the glue film. You can use scissors and even paper punches.

What kept me from trying it was the recommended firing schedule and having to keep the kiln vented for all those hours.

150°F dph to 300°F - hold :45
250°F dph to 600°F - hold :45
250°F dph to 1000°F - hold :45
Continue to fire as normal

Yes you can program a kiln and not worry about it. But somehow I shy away from long firing schedules even more so now, since I heard about those relay problems people have encountered. Knock on wood, so far I have not had a relay break on me in 17 years.

Below is the mold I used for my trial. It is a small piece of Kaiser-Lee Board with an indent. I place it in the big kiln with everything else and took the risk of not even venting my kiln. In the future I will use my firing schedule (see below) and fire the pieces in a different kiln which I can vent easily until it reaches a 1000°F.

This is the Kaiser Lee Board mold, I used for my trial.

Sorry I did not take any pictures before the firing, but here are the steps.

First I placed a piece of Papyrus shelf Paper™ in the size of the glass on the mold. Then I placed the 2 Powder Wafers™ butterflies on the paper with a piece of clear glass on top.

This is the small dish after firing. Yes, it is a single layer of glass with the butterflies fused to the underside.

Here is my firing schedule

600°F dph - to 1000°F - hold :10

Full - to 1410°F - hold for :10

Full - to 950° - hold for :15 (it's only 2.5" x 2.5")

Let cool to room temperature

This is the mold and the Papyrus Paper™ after the firing. Everything is as usual. No glue residue or anything else and I'm really pleased with the crisp look of my butterflies.

Thanks for getting back to me so soon. I'm pretty sure I'll use 2 layers of glass. Will the iridescent show well if it's used on the bottom. I didn't even know how much I love the piece I made in class until I ran into it a few days ago. I'm super excited. I also have totally unused, uncut Kaiser Lee board.

Dear Dona,

Thank you for your permission to use your picture and our conversation in this glass forum blog. Here are your questions and my answers.

If I do a full fuse of 2 thicknesses of glass, how should I slump that?

We recommend to fuse two solid layers of glass first before you slump it.

But if you cut your second layer into pieces - which will add to the design of your work, you can full fuse and slump in one firing.

All in one with none solid second layer

Question, what is Primo Primer. Would that be Bullseye primer?

No, Primo Primer is a different product. It turns to powder after the firing process and therefor does not stick to your glass. We have had problems with some other primers sticking to glass and then the fibers of the KLB will stick to the primer and rip holes into the mold or shelf.

Liquid or sprinkle on the dry. I've heard both ways.

But you can use any primer in a dry version and sift it on with a nylon sock as I show in my book Introductions to Glass Fusing.

Will my board last as long if I use primer on it?

Your KLB will last with or without primer as long as the primer does not stick to your glass. Even if it does stick, you can always use the other side of your board or use it as a chance to carve a design into it. Kaisr Lee board is hard to ruin and some of our molds and shelves are over 15 years old.

I use Bullseye glass, do I need other schedules?

No, I adjusted the above schedule to the Bullseye recommended annealing temperature.
