Building a Successful Craft Business in an Online Craft Mall

Opening a store in a Craft Mall is just the beginning, building a successful online business is a slow process that takes work and commitment.

You start by creating content for your new shop, customers coming to your shop cannot touch and feel your unique handmade crafts like they would in a brick and mortar shop, so it is extremely important that your images are crystal clear and your descriptions are detailed. It is also very important that you tell your customers about you and your craft and maybe even add your picture so that your customers can see who you are, this makes the customer feel like they know you.

Being in an online crafters mall can give you an advantage because there are already customers coming and shopping there, but that doesn't mean that you can sit back and do nothing, "well actually you can" and you might even get a few orders, but if you really want your business to succeed you will have to work at it.

So where do you start!

You start by focusing on getting traffic to your shop. By spending just a few hours a day promoting your new shop, you will find that little by little the customers will start coming and buying.

You can start by writing a couple of small adds about your unique handmade crafts and post them in online shopping classifieds, in your local newspapers and in online craft directories. You can place ads on sites like Craigs List or Kijiji for free. Join forums relating to your craft, start a Facebook page, open a Twitter account, post to Craft Blogs, start your own Craft Blog. Tell everyone you can about your unique handmade crafts and your new shop. It might take a year to build your business but in the end your hard work will pay off and you will have a steady flow of loyal customers coming and shopping in your online store. At this point you can start expanding your business.

There is no overnight success in any business on or off line, but with a little effort your handmade craft business can and will succeed.

Linda Heslop makes her home on the West coast of Canada where she is as rooted to the land as the stones, sea stars, and sandy beaches that she paints with vivid realism.

Tutored by her artist/architect father (who was one of the architects responsible for the design of Victoria's Royal BC Museum), she has drawn and painted since early childhood. She began painting in earnest before entering her teens, foregoing any formal art training as she had a strong sense of direction in her art at an early age.

Finding illustrative work somewhat confining Linda took a change in direction in the late 1990s and turned her focus to fine art almost exclusively. Honing her skills in watercolour, a medium she loves passionately, she began in earnest to capture the natural beauty of BC's wild coast. "I sense a connection with the geology of this part of the world", she says, "and an humbled by the timeless beauty of our coastline and its abundant shorelife." And indeed many can relate to her paintings of strolls along the beach and find calmness in having their own memories revisited.

Linda's work is in personal collections worldwide and in keeping with the conservationist motto "take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints" she enjoys the fact that her paintings are an invitation to safely take a little of the west coast home whilst leaving it undisturbed for others to enjoy.

Fundraiser for various programs i.e., Open House Ministries, Share House, Feed the Children, Covenant House and Living Hope Church. Handmade gifts are one of a kind and 100% of the "Profits" are donated to these organizations which provide housing, clothing, food; job skills training, child care services and preschool. These services primarily help homeless kids and young adult families. Please let me know if you would like your purchase donated to a specific organization.

All supplies are out of pocket, I am a 24 year retired Golf War Veteran and this has been my dream to give back to kids, and to join an organization like this solely for crafters.

Items for sell are handcrafted gifts, i.e., stained glass, metal, wood, and jewelry. Art work includes handpainted eggs, boxes, coasters, slumped glass items and beading. Some of the ingredients are created from recycled materials.

It is extremely important for every craft business big or small to have an internet presence. In today’s market having your craft business online means having your store open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. For the crafter who operates from home it is a perfect outlet for your crafts, you now have a place to send your regular customers to view your new products without them having to wait for the next craft show.
Having an online store gives your craft business creditably, because now when your customer wants to purchase that special gift they don’t have to wait until your next craft show, your customer can now contact you directly to make a purchase, or to order a custom made product. Having an online presence also gives the crafter who would normally just sell their crafts locally the opportunity to sell their crafts globally.
Some crafters have the ability to build their own e-commerce web sites while others are overwhelmed at the thought of hiring a web designer, finding a host, learning how to manage and promote their new site, not to mention security issues and merchant accounts. All of the above is time consuming and can prove to be very expensive.
There is another option to consider!
Online Craft Malls have been around for a long time and they might be your answer to having an online presence, but be careful and do some research before signing up. In the larger malls although they may look good you are going to have a lot of competition and your small craft shop may get lost in the mix. Some malls charge a flat monthly fee, no commissions, no product listing fee and in my opinion this is the best way to go, some charge commission plus a monthly fee, some charge a monthly fee plus a fee to list each product and some charge a product listing fee and a commission.
Most crafters want to handle all aspects of their business, so when researching the online malls make sure that you are going to have your own control panel where you will be able to add your products, product descriptions and product images easily. Also make sure that all orders and payments are going directly to you, in some malls payments go to the mall owner and you will have to wait to get paid for the product you just sold.
In every business craft or otherwise it takes time to grow your business and even though opening a store in a craft mall brings you instant traffic this does not mean you will start selling right away. It takes time and hard work to build your business, so at first use your new craft shop to send your regular customers to view your new and existing crafts and in time you will start getting new customers from around the world.
