I just received my Polar FT80 HRM. I wanted to do some testing on the watch: run the Fitness test, relaxation test, and things of that nature. So I did. I also wanted to see how the Polar FT80 HRM calculated Maximum HR. Well, apparently it uses Dr. William Haskell’s formula of 220-age as the default setting. According to this formula, my MHR is 176 bpm. On a side note, this calculation has always been way off for me. At the best conditioning of my life, my Maximum HR was 205 bpm. This was about 5 years ago. Using Haskell’s formula suggested my MHR was 181 at that time. I determined my Max HR with an all out run and it was consistent every time I ran at that CV level. 205. Yes, we are 5 years removed and I am just getting back to that level of training and beyond, so I need to find my MHR in order to set THR for future training. Here are my HR Zones in 2006 when I was 39 (recorded with a Garmin 305 HRM):

The Haskell formula was approximately 13% off for me by 24 bpm. According to NESTA (National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association), “there is a large range of error with this formula. Approximately 2/3 of the population will have maximum heart rates that are within 10 bpm.1/3 of the population will have maximum heart rates more than ±10 bpm (in fact, 5% of the population will by off by more than 20 bpm!).” That being said, I am 5 years removed from this chart so I need to re-find my MHR in order to create training zones that are more efficient.

But, back to..

How to Reset your Polar FT80 HRM

After I played around with my new HRM, I decided to reset it to factory settings. I found it a little difficult to find out how, but discovered it on the Polar Forums: and even then it took a while to find the process. The thread is here: (http://forum.polar.fi/showthread.php?t=13556)

If that thread ever gets lost, you can follow these directions with the caveat: Do it at your own risk!

If you found this article, you can get right down to it: You can ‘soft reset’ your Polar FT80 which will save all your data except for the time and date.

So, before you Factory Reset, you need to do a Soft Reset:
Legend:
UL: Upper Left Button
BL: Bottom Left Button
UR: Upper Right Button
BR: Bottom Right Button
MR: Middle Right Button

How to Soft Reset your Polar FT80 HRM:

Hold the 4-corner buttons down simultaneously for 4 seconds.

UL+BL+UR+BR

The watch should appear asleep – press a button to wake it up and the setting menu will come up. Your Polar FT80 has just went through a soft reset.

Press the BL and it will ask you to choose the Language for your watch.

Next: proceed to do a Factory Reset of your Polar FT80 HRM

Now you have to get into the System Menu: In this order, you need to press one at a time:

BL – UR – UR

You may have to do this a few times because you have to do it quickly. Once you are able to accomplish this you will leave the Language setup and you will be in the Service Menu. You will see the firmware version of your Polar FT80.

Here’s where you can do a Hard or Factory Reset of your Polar FT80 HRM.

Press: BR

Then: BR again and it will ask to “RSET”

Press: MR in order to confirm the reset.

You just did a Factory Reset of your HRM!

Once done, push BL and your watch will restart and you can proceed to enter all your basic settings.

And that’s it: The only hard part is getting to the System Menu because you have to be fast with the buttons!

Don’t start that script until you can answer question from beat to beat, scene to scene, act one to act three…  But how do you get from nothing to beat to beat? A loose outline that blueprints the story from beginning to end, even if its three sentences long, is better than an idea without a story!

I’ve had people come to me about the great story they have. They tell me about the idea but then I ask a crucial question: “And then what happens?” their story comes to a dead end. An ‘idea’ is far from a story.  If nothing really happens to propel the story forward in order to answer another “And then what happens?” so what right?

Ask this question three times and if you can answer it three times from the beginning of the story to the end, start working on building the story and your movie script!

Example: “Thelma and Louise”

What is your story about?

It’s about Thelma, an abused wife, and Louise, a waitress in a dead end job, who, take up an offer to use a friend’s cabin over the weekend in the mountains.

1. And then what happens?

Louise kills a guy who is trying to rape Thelma!

2. And then what happens?

Thelma and Louise have to escape from Arkansas to Mexico.

3. And then what happens?

A hitchhiker steals all their money and the FBI are closing in on them finally catching up to them with no escape.

Are there things that happen during the movie other than this? Of course! But from start to finish, this through line tells it all doesn’t it? If Louise never kills the guy who tried to rape Thelma, so what right?

Example: “Star Wars”

What is the story about?

It’s about a Luke Skywalker, a country boy living with his aunt and uncle, who wants desperately to be a pilot for the Rebel Alliance.

1. And then what happens?

He comes across and old Jedi Master, Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi, that knew his father.

2. And then what happens?

After his aunt, uncle and home are destroyed by the Imperial Army the old Jedi Master takes him under his wing to mentor him and teach him the secrets of ‘the Force’.

3. And then what happens?

He becomes a pilot and leads an attack against the Imperial Army in a do or die intergalactic mission relying on the secrets of ‘the Force’ to lead the final assault.

Isn’t that basically what happens? Do you realize that this through line represents the hero’s ultimate want (or ‘super want’) and by getting it avenges his family’s death?

What if his uncle and aunt weren’t killed? Then, so what right? The hero carried the weight on his shoulders as he led the attack.

This is how to write a movie script. Have your answers first, then, work to build an outline, beat sheet and the script from it. Your movie script and all movies you watch all have answers to: “And then what happens”, from beginning to end! If you start there, you will have a great start on writing your script!

Procrastination is unavoidable – so we think. To overcome procrastination, just make a list of all the things you could have accomplished if you had not procrastinated!  This is your list of failures! Are you a failure? No! If you aren’t, then work on that list and turn them into a list of goals! Successful people have goals! Winners have goals! Goals lead to success!

One day of procrastination can lead to a month of failures – because one day of procrastination as a writer will lead to another day. That day will lead to a week, then a month. Once a year of procrastination sets in, how hard do you think it is to get back on track? It is hard!

Be accountable to your responsibility as a writer. Wear the title well – if you do not writer, you are not a writer. It is plain and simple. If you want to be a writer you need to write instead of procrastinating!

If you are accountable to your mortgage, and you have to write to pay your mortgage, you have hung something on that responsibility and now have to take ownership for it. Hang something on your responsibility as a writer and take ownership for every page written and unwritten!

That list of failures you put together are the products of your procrastination. It is now the list of goals to achieve by starting on number 1 and going down the list. That list of failures will be your new list of goals and eventually a list of successes. Each one is a goal, and each one will lead to a more productive you – a more productive writer!

As a writer, don’t let life and the lack of fulfillment be the product of your procrastination. Take ownership of your writing and be accountable for it. That way life and all its potential will be the reasons why you write.

If you want to continue to fail, by all means, procrastinate! If you want to succeed, then write. If you write, and even if you write poorly, at least you are active and can wear the title of ‘writer’ well. If not, wear the title of ‘procrastinator’ and live with your failures.

The sermon at church today caught my interest. How often do we really think about what Christmas is all about? And what does it really mean to you (or me) personally?

So often we forget what it means – or what it is – and if you really think about it, you don’t have a quick answer on what Christmas really means.

We, as a society, tend to get caught up with the commercialization, the stress, the parking, the hectic sales and scrambling to get shopping down. We think about debt, and that the year went by so fast… and we never really contemplate or ponder one simple very important thought.

What does Christmas mean to you personally?
In the Christmas Movie Classic, “It’s Christmas Charlie Brown” Linus does a speech about Christmas.

For me – Christmas means all of the above. Its a depressing time, a time filled with too much debt, and a reflection of a year of goals that weren’t accomplished that you’ll start all over again on January 1st.

Yes, that’s the honest truth. That’s what it means initially.

But deep down – Christmas always means to me, personally, a time to see my family all together and happy that its Christmas. It means deep emotional pleasure to see and be a part of the excitement when Jessica comes home for a visit. It means that we nod and agree to take the corny family picture in front of the tree for a Christmas Card that rarely ever gets sent. It means, as I grow older, that its about the happiness and pleasure I receive when I see my family open up their gifts.

Christmas means to me, personally, the gateway to the start of something newer, better, and happier. A time of year of reflection of the year past. And to look forward to 12/31 to celebrate a new year.

I love Christmas. I love being with my family. I love being a part of love and happiness.

What does Christmas mean to you – personally?

Goals and Success are directly related to a written list. No, not the one in your head, the one that is ‘literally’ written down as a task list. If it’s in your head, it’s just an idea fading away.

Task lists, whether its a daily ‘to-do’ list which includes grocery shopping and/or an hour at the gym, a list will help you get things done. Getting things done is how to succeed in anything in life.

Here are 5 things you should create lists for in order to achieve goals and succeed.

1. Getting better Grades in college
2. Personal Health & Fitness
3. Daily Chores
4. Work “To-Do’s”
5. Personal Time

Each of these ‘listable’ things will create more balance in your life and help you achieve goals which, in turn, will make you more confident and create a habit of accomplishment!

1. Getting Better Grades in College

Do you want better grades? Make a list! Create a daily study appointment. Don’t make it a haphazard study period, not knowing what to study when you get to the library, and just ‘winging it’.

Example of a 4 hour study session:

1st hour: Statistics- understand a specific concepts.
2nd hour: Literature- comprehend and learn to ‘like’ your project
15 minute break
3rd hour: Science – Memory exercises
4th Hour: 15 minute review of all 3 subjects starting with 1st subject.

This routine will give you a specific time frame (without pressure) to accomplish a goal. This habit of creating a ‘written’ study list will keep you on track on a daily basis. Accomplishing the goals you set out (the list), will create a habit of success throughout your college life!

2. Personal Health & Fitness

If you aren’t crossing things off a personal health and fitness list, you aren’t getting healthy or fit! If you create list on personal health and fitness goals, you are well on your way to a healthier and happier lifestyle.

So what should you do? Create a time frame – much like a study list with specific hours of study, you need to create time goals.

It could be like: Lose 5 lbs by April 15 (4 weeks).  And within that goal you create a list.

-Buy health related food for the week to establish daily consumption of no more than a recommend calorie count a day.
-3 hours of cardiovascular workouts at a ‘fat-burning’ heart rate every week for 4 weeks.
-Drink eight 8-ounces of water a day.
-Work on a different ‘core’ exercise every day for 4 weeks.

3. Daily Chores

Your daily chores, believe it or not, are the tasks you actually need to succeed on in order to have a successful life. The most successful people do not let the daily chores go by the wayside, only to pick up on them later due to procrastination.

If you want to include a nap in your day, that nap should not conflict with the list you set for that day. Each daily task or chore needs to be accomplished, needs to be done at a specific time, and needs to be ‘stuck to’ as much as possible. “Playing it by ear” on a daily basis leads to daily failures. These failures, much like successes, are habit forming – and are incredibly hard to break!

4. Work “To-Do’s”

Do you have a stack of paper on your desk that needs to be filed? Do you have 50 emails that are turning into 100 that you need to review? Do you have 5 things your boss asked for but you don’t know where to start?

It’s simple: create a list, put the easiest one on top, and start knocking them off your list.

If you put the easiest task on top, it will create momentum of success, a daily momentum you will need to get through the day in order to accomplish all your goals! Once you get the feeling of success, the next task becomes easier and easier, and by the time you get to the most difficult task on your list, it’s not that much difficult because the other tasks aren’t looming and weighing you down!

5. Personal Time

Do you have a day off to do ‘nothing’ but relax? Well, you will get the best relaxation time if you make sure to create a list! If you don’t, you’ll find your day gone and you’ll say to yourself, “I didn’t even get to do (fill in the blank)”. How many times has that happened?

If it’s a day at the spa, an hour in front of the TV, reading a book, taking a nap, create a list of all the things you want to do during your personal time, and get them done! This is not added pressure at it may seem; it is added relaxation knowing that your head is clear because you are getting whatever it is you want done on your day of personal time!

Create habits that lead to daily success! These habits will lead to bigger accomplishments for your bigger goals! If you follow one or more of the above suggestions on a daily basis, you will accomplish more, feel more confident, and have a full, success oriented lifestyle!

So, just to start things off with great tips and tricks with the iPhone 4s, I’ll start with…

7 Favorite Siri commands to use on my iPhone 4s

First, lets go over how you use Siri. Well, if you were using Voice Control and read some of my tips on Voice Control here: (Secret Tips on your iPhone 4), then you will now be accessing Siri. Holding the “Home” button for 3 seconds puts you in touch with Siri!

But here’s another cool way to ask Siri for some assistance: and this is the coolest way.

If your iPhone 4 is on, just hold it up to your ear, wait a second for the tone, and start your request! Yes, it’s as simple as picking up the phone and talking! How does Siri know? I still have to find out.

So let’s go on with my favorite Siri Commands.

1. Tell my wife “I Love You”
2. Play Run Music Playlist
3. Wake me up at 6:30 AM tomorrow
4. Note: 3 Short Forms – Straight Punch Attack, and Slanted Elbow, and Outward Sword
5. Tell my boss “I’m going to be a little late”
6. Email Dale “Email me the script so I can review it!”
7. Remind me to buy milk

Okay, it’s only been one day since the iPhone 4s release, and it’s only been, maybe, 10 hours that I used Siri… so this is a short 7 list favorite Siri commands I have discovered, and, am using!

Let’s start with #1!

1. Tell my wife “I Love You”

This is an all encompassing type of #1. yes, tell my wife, “I Love You” is a great way to start my day, but notice who I’m telling it to: “My Wife”. This will lead right into #5, but I left that for later. How does Siri know to tell “my wife” that I love her? Well, you set up ‘relationships’.

I activated Siri and said, “Donna Magas is my wife”. And it confirmed Donna’s contact information and now Siri knows, Donna is my wife. More on that when we get to #5.

2. Play Run Music Playlist

Forget looking at your iPhone 4s while on a run. It’s tough – especially when it’s on the side of your bicep in a sports strap. So just speak to Siri and say, “Play Run Music Playlist” and you’re off and running… literally. Simple, easy, and less cumbersome fumbling through iTunes while running, while your iPhone is strapped to your arm!

3. Wake me up at 6:30 AM tomorrow

Okay, generally, when I’m about to fall asleep, I remember I have to set my alarm. And I think about setting my alarm for a wake up sometime during the day when I think, I better wake up at 6:30 AM tomorrow. So, if I’m in my car driving home and I’m thinking about it, I might as well set it without having to ‘set it’… I just activate Siri and say, “Wake me up at 6:30 AM tomorrow”.

Now if I can request, “Kick my ass if I hit snooze” that would be awesome!

4. Note: 3 Short Forms – Straight Punch Attack, and Slanted Elbow, and Outward Sword

So I want to use Notes and start some sort of list. Well, Siri is more than welcome. Activiate Siri and say, “3 short forms Straight Punch Attack and Slanted Elbow and Outward Sword.

5. Tell my boss “I’m going to be a little late”

And here we are at #5 – Tell my boss, “I’m going to be a little late”. Yes, it’s all about relationships again!

Just like #1 above, activate Siri and in this case I would say, “Ted Wang is my boss”.

Siri will respond with something about Ted Wang being my “manager” and once you confirm you have set the relationship.

Another relationship: “David Magas is my dad”, “Jerida is my mom”, “Jessica is my oldest Daughter” and so on and so forth.

6. Email Dale “Email me the script so I can review it!”

You can what? Dictate an email?

Well, I haven’t tested out 100 words but I did test a few words. Siri will ask you to confirm the email recipient as well as to state a ‘subject’.  And then your email is sent! Mobile computing while driving has never been easier!

7. Remind me to buy milk

One of those cool upgrades with iOS5 is the ‘reminders’ app. And yes, you can set reminders like buying milk at 10AM tomorrow!

You know the drill, activate Siri and say, “Remind me to buy mile at 10 AM tomorrow” and at 10AM, you will get a friendly reminder from Siri!

Of course it doesn’t have to be milk it could be, “Remind me to request my paycheck from Helium at 9AM on the 14th of every month”.

Guess what, Siri confirms that she will ‘start reminding me’ and to validate the request I checked the reminders app. And sure enough, it is set for 9AM monthly on… THE 14th!!! Incredible!

So there you have it… my 7 Favorite Siri commands to use on my iPhone 4s. I’m sure there will be more and I’m sure I’ll let you in on it!

Activating the iPhone 4s – Fail!

Guess what I received at 10am on Friday, October 14, 2011? The new iPhone 4s. While people were waiting in lines for their iPhone, and struggling to get their iPhone 4s activated, the iPhone 4s arrived at my front door while I had a cup of coffee in my hand.

Working from home had a two-fold reason: one to get some stuff done during lunch and two, to be there to receive my iPhone 4s.

If you’ve owned an iPhone you will understand the incredible pleasure of opening up the iPhone box to see a sleek electronic device that literally makes you drool. Yes, literally! And unlike past packages, this iPhone isn’t falling out of the box and onto the ground like a previous release way back when.

So, as current iPhone users are used to, seeing the iPhone come out of the box is a sight for drooling eyes. Yes, I drooled from my eyes too! That being said, I took a couple of pictures with my OLD iPhone 4 and got ready for some activation!

Here’s the slam on AT&T… First, I have to preface this by saying: I have no problems with AT&T coverage, costs of coverage, and connectivity issues. Even with the iPhone 4′s antennae issue. That being said… AT&T fails when it comes to servers failing when we need them most. Like iPhone 4s Friday!

Fail – Activating the iPhone 4s was not a pain, but a painful wait. Every few minutes of trying turned to every 15-30 minutes of trying. Now it doesn’t take much effort, just plug it in and let iTunes do all the work. Well, I tried that. And then I also tried the new activation process of using WiFi or Cellular in order to activate the iPhone 4s! Luck… NONE!

To make a long story short… I signed for the iPhone 4s at 10AM… It was finally activated at 4PM on Friday afternoon!

There’s a little more to the story…

I was over joyed and excited.

The best part of it all: syncing the iPhone 4s was quick and easy. Seriously! It completely mimicked my iPhone 4 setup and everything was exactly where I had it!

Games like Tiny Tower, Words with Friends, Hanging with Friends were exactly as I left them, and Social Networking apps like Facebook, Twitter, and HootSuite were all setup and ready to go!

The only ‘task’ was email. You have to re-enter your passwords and if you have several accounts, this can be tedious. I suggest after you enter your passwords, turn your phone on and off and everything will be good. Or else, you might keep getting messages that you can’t retrieve messages.

The iPhone 4s is an awesome piece of hardware. iOS 5 is, from what I’ve experienced thus far: a great upgrade! I expect there to be some glitches here and there and a few were: Twitter was not loading and I came across a few games that were not loading either. I deleted them and re-downloaded them and everything worked fine (so far).

So, to recap this monumental day… The New iPhone 4s is awesome. iOS5 is a great upgrade. I’m still working on Siri and can’t wait to let Siri ‘assist me’. Internet and download speed – noticeable upgrade from the iPhone 4!

iPhone 5 release Date!

Could it be true? A late 2011 release date for a new iPhone 5? I can’t wait! 18 months after the iPhone 4 made its debut to record sales, could an iPhone 5 shatter that mark?

From what I’ve heard…

The iPhone 5 will have a unibody – like my MacBook Pro! And this should relieve those cracks in the back you see so often on your iPhone4!

I was a little disapointed with the iPhone 4′s MP and believed it should match print quality photographs like the digital cameras of, at least, the early 2000′s… And now with an 8mp / 1080p camera, I think the iPhone is finally a ligit contender when it comes to quality photographs!

It’s funny though, most people who own an iPhone 4 have no idea how to use their iPhone 4′s camera to its fullest for 1) better pictures and 2) composition! Which reminds me, I need to write about the iPhone 4 and how to take pictures. But maybe I’ll wait on the iPhone 5 for that article.

Next up: iPhone’s new iOS5!  I have yet to be disappointed with an iPhone upgrade, and have always jumped the gun on every iPhone iOS and was so happy that during my vacation at Disney World that I was able to upgrade to iOS4 and use tethering (My Personal Hotspot)  instead of paying close to $10 a day on internet service. Stupid resorts should offer that for free! Related article: “Using My Personal Hotspot”

So, the iPhone 5 release date is coming upon  us. The biggest question for me is: Do I preorder? Or just walk in and get it?

The next question… Who gets my iPhone 4?

So… with a 30 minute wait for a table at Cheesecake Factory, Jake and I decided to blog from the Apple Store at the Americana!

Well, I decided to blog, Jake is watching some YouTube video on the MacBook Air.

And that’s what I’m using to blog – a MacBook Air.

I absolutely LOVE-LOVE-LOVE the size. It is absolutely incredible. The contrast between the MacBook Air and my MacBook Pro is so significant it makes my MBP feel like a clunker!

Yes, the MBP is bigger, holds a ton more memory, and is one of the best machines out there EVER… but a MacBook Air can go with me anywhere, it can do everything I need to do and with iPhone’s My Personal Hotspot, I can do just about anything just about anywhere.

Hmmm… maybe I should start a savings account for a MacBook Air.

They start from $999 for the 11 inch, which is what I am on right now!

Well, believe it or not, Cheesecake Factory is buzzing us. And that’s like 5 minute wait!!!

I’m ready for some Ahi Carpaccio and a glass of red…

I watched the finals match between Serena Williams and Samantha Stosur and, after being educated by ‘the call’, found Serena Williams absolutely wrong in her rant towards the chair umpire. The ruling was correct no matter what you think. And even if it was an incorrect call, Sereana Williams’ rant was an incredible display of poor taste and sportsmanship.

Yes, I believe you should be angry that what you did caused a violation. It’s a stupid rule. But a rule-nonetheless – and the Chair Umpire is there to enforce the rule. Taking it personally – well, Serena went just so far as to barely pull the race card in her stupid tantrum.

Let’s break down her ugly comments…

First… the call was correct. And yes, Serena should be upset… but NO… She shouldn’t have taken it out personally nearly threatening the Chair Umpire (and it’s not the first time she’s threatened someone). Hell, I’ve been in the ‘fight game’ a long time and never threatened anyone. And I’m in a sport where we kick and punch each other.

Now, what did she say?

“Are you the one who screwed me over last time?”

What’s that supposed to mean? That the Chair Umpire had something against Williams? You screw yourself over when you are behind and you lose the match because of your own anger issues. See below regarding the Clijsters incident.

“You ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way cause you’re out of control. Totally out of control.”

Huh? This sounds like a threat to me. Because if she looks at her then what? Let’s not beat around the bush, this is a blatant threat.

“You’re totally out of control. You’re a hater and you’re unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing?”

Hmmm… she’s on the verge here isn’t she? Hater of what? Skin color? Unattractive inside? Well that’s a big contradiction in my opinion. Serena Williams is portraying a very unattractive outside burst of anger and that, my friends, is coming from where she pointed: inside.

“And I never complain. Wow. What a loser.”

Are you kidding me? Never? Ever? NEVER EVER? You NEVER complain? Maybe she’s like a robot or something with a computer chip she can erase memories of threatening line judges! See below!

“You give a code violation because I expressed who I am? We’re in America last I checked…”

Okay, WHAT THE FUCK does being in America have to do with expressing who you are but getting penalized for “Hindrance”. It’s in the rulebook and everybody commentating on the match validated it.

Now this just pissed me off. You are mouthing off at someone and you say Don’t look my way?

Serena Williams DID not apologize. She did say she was sorry she lost the match.

Was I a fan of Serena Williams? Yes.

Am I now?

Hell no.

In another match against Clijsters in another US Open Semis, Serena said to the line judge:

“If I could, I would take this … ball and shove it down your … throat,” Williams said.

Seriously? If she could? Like if there was a rule that you can shove something down someone’s throat because you’re mad at them then you would? SERIOUSLY? How old are you Serena? What kind of world do you live in? It’s almost as if you can say “If I could, I’d kill you. But I can’t. So I’ll just threaten you!”

“I’ve never been in a fight in my whole life, so I don’t know why she would have felt threatened,” Williams said with a smile.

Oh my god. What a Bitch! – And I say that with a smile.
