Oh by the way ....(see above)

You get a discount like I did if you already own a drobo
I saved $250 for providing my serial# of my 4 bay firewire 800 drobo.
Many of you are probably asking ..."Do I have to send back my Drobo"

No...You still keep your Drobo

I now have mine connected to the Imac storage (aperture/Logic)
Remote desktop makes life so easy now.
Now looking into a Esata -10bay enclosure to Connect direct to the G% server for TimeMachine backups of :
- G5 Server
- DROBO
- DroboPRO
- IMAC
- MacPro

I think you guys are missing the point and the technology behind the product.
The Drobo share is usb to Ethernet adapter, and is slow as slow can be.
Drobopro is designed marketed at a iscsi product, all though it does have usb 2.0 and Firewire 800. It screams speed using the ethernet for iscsi.
If they had just made it a nas with gigabit Ethernet you could only expect 20-45 mb/s
DroboPro + ISCSI = 70-95 MB/s

Look at the Qnap TS-809...8 bay nas/iscsi/raid on ebay.
Along with Drobopro, it too can add apps to the server.
TS-809 is around about $400 more than the Drobopro.

Iscsi is a protocol used over regular GiGabit cables and switches.
This is a "always on connection" and connects to a Single Server or client, Both MUST be on the same subnet. Speeds are accomplished because the Os thinks the drobopro is a local drive and communicates through iscsi protocol.
This is called a storage area network and it's the next best thing to fibre channel.

I used to use a firewire 800 drobo for editing HD on a MacPro but now I have the drobopro plugged into a old G5 running Os x Server.
I share my drobo with the Editing Bay (MacPro 8-core) and the Audio Production Workstation(24-Imac)
When we get busy we setup The 17 " Macbook Pro /24 led cinema as a effects Bay.
I run my entire network wired (Gigabit)

* (entire network must be gigabit--10/100 tx cards will not work.)*

Transfers are blazing between 70-95 MB/s. Hard to think I can pull 2 drives with safety. Beauty is scalability ...can add several to to my server just by upgrading my Gbe switch.
If you edit video and have a need for RAID speeds...this may be the one for you.

Cait: It would be near on impossible for Apple to put a 4GB module in the Air, they're super expensive - going for about $360. The Air only has enough space for the single module of RAM so putting two 2GB modules is out of the question.

We won't see 4GB in the Air until the price becomes a little more economic.

I'm with Andres. I believe the 4GB of RAM should be standard at the $1499 price point. The 13" MacBook Pro has 4GB of RAM for it's $1299 model. I know the MacBook Air is targetted at a different kind of user, but regardless, I feel at that price point...

I agree somewhat with what you're saying, but I have another thought on this.

I actually agree that the MacBook should primarily be sold to the education market. There should be an inexpensive notebook to take its place. I don't think the MacBook Air would do it. The MacBook Air is a subnotebook, like the Dell Adamo. Subnotebooks tend to go to the high-end. The MacBook Air has this feeling of high-end design that wouldn't be appropriate for a low-end Mac notebook.

Perhaps Apple should keep the MacBook to the general public. These rumors of a "media pad" could end up being an Apple version of those popular netbooks that are sold to the public, possibly running Mac OS X, or the iPhone OS (preferably Mac OS X). That would probably be a high-end netbook. It could cost around $750-800 US or the equivalent around the world.

I hope the idea that you presented becomes true. I actually want an Air, but it's still a little pricey for my taste. I just don't think that is realistic for a company like Apple, who likes to produce high-end products, to do something like that.

Hello,
I enjoyed your article and wanted to ask you a question.
I have a,
IMac
3.06
4 GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
IMac 8,1
My question is can and should I upgrade the RAM to 6 GB?
Apple said my model wont go for it but others have said it will.
I use Logic pro with Reason and Melodyne via the rewire application.
I do max out the cpu load sometimes as I use plug-ins that are
processor intensive. I've been banging my head over this and studying
every post I can ie (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1163865.html)

Not sure I agree, at least I don't think this could happen in the next two years. The MBA needs an SSD to actualize its full potential, and SSDs are still too expensive to be shipped with entry-level computers.
I really don't have a problem with the current lineup, and I think the MBA doesn't need to be "integrated" into the "main lineup". It deserves a place of its own.

Air should come with 4GB RAM. Even if soldered. At least the higher model.

Glenn, last night I wrote a post about how the MacBook Air may fit the bill of an "Apple Netbook" or at least the closest thing we're going to see to one these days. This idea sort of goes along the same concept I was thinking of. I don't believe the Air should be marketed at business professionals. I think it should be marketed towards those who would look at the white MacBook as an option. In doing that, Apple would need to lower the price of the MacBook Air significantly, but I do think it can be done. The MacBook Air changing into just the "MacBook" and the MacBook Pro line staying the way it was edited at WWDC would make for a very clean notebook lineup for Apple. Great concept, Glenn...

Exactly what I think. But I have some problems with the Air, for me it's not enough power under the hood — especially caused by picture editing. There for I'm considering to jump up to the 15" MBP but just because it features the better graphics card. If the 13" MBP would have maybe a 256MB Ram graphics card, I would be more than happy with that!

Like I sad, 13" MacBook Air would be nice but not enough power, 15" MacBook Pro is nice but for me personally it feels to big, 13" MacBook Pro is great in size but the graphics are not enough.

A 13" MacBook Pro with better graphics would be very very nice!

Great post though!
