The public is invited to the “Drawing for Competition Playing Order” for the St. Joseph International Guitar Festival & Competition, Thursday, May 14, 9:00 AM at Missouri Western State University, Lea Spratt MC Building Lobby.

A “Competition Drawing” is a ceremony when the international competitors receive their playing order for the first round of a musical competition.

The event also gives the public a chance to meet the international players and judges who will be involved in the competition.

Following the first round performances (which are not open to the public), the Final Competition Round will be held Sunday, May 17, 3:00 PM and is open to the public. It will be held at the “DUC,” Downtown University Campus at 515 N. 6th (the former Scottish Rite) in Downtown St. Joseph. Entrance is $5 / $10 general public and seating is limited.

In the final round, the audience (18 and older) will have a chance to hear the top three competitors in a concert setting and vote for placement and the division of over $7,000 prize money and gifts.

The Final Round will be followed by the award ceremony, with the post-concert jam session and closing party held at the St. Joseph Terrible’s Casino beginning at 7:00 PM, hosted by the Jason Riley Trio.

The 6th annual ST. JOSEPH INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL & COMPETITION, sponsored by Missouri Western State University, is currently taking applications for home-hosts for the US and international musicians that will be in St. Joseph from May 13-17, 2009. Home hosting is an opportunity to become personally involved in the festival and get to know some of these brilliant artists on a personal level in exchange for 4 full complimentary tickets valid for entrance to all festival events (a $160. total value). More importantly, this is a chance to introduce our tremendous community to the foreign and US musicians that come to St. Joseph every year for this monumental event. Former guests to our festival have come from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Uruguay and throughout the US. Naturally, hosts with varied language skills are a great asset, but a majority of our guests speak English fluently. The prize money and gifts for this year’s competition are in excess of $7000 which places us among the top 5 classical guitar competitions in the US so the festival is expecting more competitors than ever before.

website
MySpace

Classical guitarist, Samuel Klemke of Weimar,
Germany, will be giving two house concerts in St. Joseph on:

Monday, March 9, 7:00 PM,
and,
Tuesday, March 10, 7:00 PM.

The performances are free but a $10. donation is suggested. Due to
limited seating, reservations are required. House concert address and
information is available by contacting: Maria Windisch, (816) 279-0283.

Mr. Klemke is one of the many international guitarists who have
visited St. Joseph for Missouri Western’s, St. Joseph International
Guitar Festival and Competition, and in 2006, Klemke was awarded 2nd
prize in the St. Joseph Competition.

While somewhat rare in the US, “house concerts” became highly popular
musical and social events throughout Europe from the early
19th-Century, when concert
halls were used for orchestral performances
and the “drawing rooms” of musical patrons were for solo concerts.
House concerts remain today one of the most revered activities in
European artistic circles. A house concert offers the audience a
chance to hear professional international artists in a more personal
and casual setting.

Mr. Klemke is one of the many competitors from Missouri Western’s
International Guitar Festival who periodically returns to St. Joseph
during their US concert tours.

You can listen to a feature program of Mr. Klemke’s recordings on-line at:

St. Joseph Music Foundation Radio

every evening from 8:00 – 9:00 PM beginning
Friday, February 27 through
Tuesday, March 10
as well as Sundays, 2:00 – 3:00 PM.

Missouri Western’s St. Joseph International Guitar Festival &
Competition is one of the premiere international guitar festivals in
the US. Performers have come to St. Joseph for the festival from
Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Costa Rica, Cyprus, France, Germany, Holland,
Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Poland,
Serbia, Uruguay and throughout the United States.

Past St. Joseph International Guitar Festival Competition winners:

2004
1st Prize: Isaac Bustos (Nicaragua)
2nd Prize: Munhk-Orgil Turbold (Mongolia)
3rd Prize: Nenad Savic (Serbia)

2005
1st Prize: Alieksey Vianna (Brazil)
3rd Prize: Joseph Williams (US)

2006
1st Prize: Alexandr Tsiboulski (Ukraine / Australia)
2nd Prize: Samuel Klemke (Germany)
3rd Prize: Robert Sharp (US)

2007
1st Prize: Eduardo Minozzi Costa (Brazil)
2nd Prize: Austin Moorhead (US)

2008 (festival not produced).

2009 To be announced May 17, 2009.

Klemke alone conjured so wonderfully on six strings
that the listeners asked loudly for two encores.
He intoxicated his audience with his phenomenal playing!
