Pople are already hijacking delivery trucks and stealing RAM out of floor models.

So 10-15 years ago, there was a Bourbon craze. There wasn’t enough of it and it was getting pricey. I remember reading at the time that tons of new distilleries were being built, and they’d have their first batches ready just in time for the craze to be over. That’s what’s happening right now.

Of course, that’s about trends and taste and not identifying by what you saw on your parents’ shelf.

But the new RAM fabs being built will suffer the same fate. Whenever AI crashes and burns (and even if it is sucessfull, it will crash), those fabs are going to to be cranking out more RAM than the market needs. And I suspect that software will get leander while RAM is scarce, which means the demand for it won’t be as big as it would’ve been had AI not fucked everything up.

And these fabs will be massive. The economics don’t allow for small fabs. They have to be gigantic and have to serve massive markets. There will be so. much. ram.

Possibly more interesting is the potential for non-cutting-edge fabs to pop up in the meantime. Right this moment, TSMC dominates everything. But as their capacacity is completely overrun, it opens the door for some scrappy (again, scrappy in fabs means the most gigantic, expensive thing you can imagine) fab to start offering something that can fill the gap. I suspect chip architects can come up with all sorts of interesting hacks, and they’ll all be valuable, but they’ll be absolutely nowhere with performance per watt. Heh. Maybe this is how Intel gets back in the game.

So mobile computing might stagnate for a bit, and high desktop performance computing might catch up in overall value to the user.

In order for sports to work, the owner has to have some emotional attachment to it because these are fabulously wealthy people. The amount of money the sports make for them isn’t enough for them to give a damn because they have so much money already. They’re doing it because they like sports.
