Bupleurum Chinese is an herb native to East Asia and central Europe; its presence has even spread across the United States. Although the plant has long, thin leaves that resemble dill and small yellow flowers that develop into fruit, the root contains the plant’s most beneficial compounds. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s known as the “harmony herb” because it supports balance and synergy. This designation has lead to its inclusion as an overall support agent within many herbal remedy formulas.

Why is Bupleurum Effective?

Bupleurum root contains several active compounds, including sterols, saponins, and saikosaponins. Saponins and saikosaponins have an antioxidant action that helps to support the immune system, reduce redness and swelling, and stimulate the liver. ^[1] One specific saikosaponin, saikosaponin C, has even been shown to induce the growth of human umbilical vein cells and may have potential to support the development of new blood vessels. ^[2] Bupleurum also contains a compound called rutin, which helps strengthen capillaries. Mimosa Pudica is a small evergreen that grows in Brazil, Asia, Africa, and India. The plant has a number of nicknames, including shameful plant, touch-me-not, and sensitive plant. Mimosa Pudica earned these names because of an interesting quality- its leaves close when they’re touched.

In Ayurvedic medicine, Mimosa pudica is known as lajjalu and its inclusion within the system is not because of its dancing leaves, but the therapeutic benefits the compounds within the plant offers. Many hemorrhoid sufferers have experienced relief as a result of this special plant’s pharmacological profile and antioxidant activity. ^{[1] [2]}

Mimosa Pudica and Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids describe an uncomfortable problem in which the blood vessels in the anal area swell and become very sore. Hemorrhoids can originate from straining during bowel movements, pregnancy, being overweight, and other factors. Swelling, discomfort, and even bleeding are common indications of hemorrhoids and they’re all miserable for the person experiencing them. Mimosa pudica has similar styptic qualities to stop bleeding. This can be invaluable for bleeding hemorrhoids. A topical paste made from Mimosa pudica leaves has been known as a hemorrhoid therapy since at least the 16th century. ^{[1] [3]} Additionally, mimosa pudica’s phenol content and antioxidant action is believed to help wounds, like bleeding hemorrhoids, heal faster. ^[4]

Supplementing with Mimosa Pudica

If the uncomfortable presence of swollen, burning hemorrhoids is ruining your day, natural herbal therapies like Mimosa pudica may be an avenue for relief. Hamamelis virginiana, better known as witch hazel, is a tall shrub native to the United States and Canada. It has a long history of use by the Native Americans as a traditional phytotherapy for hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and other circulatory system problems. Subsequent research has shown that the benefits of this special plant are the result of compounds and antioxidants contained within its leaves and bark. ^[1]

How Does Witch Hazel Work?

You may have seen witch hazel listed as an ingredient for facial cleansers and skin toning products. This is because witch hazel contains tannins, which are astringents. An astringent can dry and tighten tissue, this may help with acne and oily skin.

Also, because witch hazel contains antioxidants, it can help battle aging. Stressors like pollution and unhealthy food can produce free radicals, which are pollutants themselves that cause aging and wreak havoc within the body. Antioxidants patrol through the body to sniff out and neutralize harmful free radicals.

Psychiatric drugs are serious business, they have repeatedly been linked to horrible side effects and over 42,000 deaths every year. Unfortunately, psychiatric drugs are also big business. “It can be difficult to pick a diagnosis.”

“Diagnoses are sometimes kind of muddy.”

“We don’t always make the perfect diagnosis.”

“It’s hard, we’re wrong about half the time.”

Butcher’s broom, or Ruscus aculeatus, is an evergreen like shrub with a long history of use in Europe for promoting circulatory system health. Among other benefits, butcher’s broom helps tighten blood vessels and capillaries, which has generated interest for use against varicose veins. It’s also been shown to relieve fluid retention and other symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.

How Does Butcher’s Broom Work?

According to American University in Washington, DC, butcher’s broom activates receptors that stimulate the release of noradrenaline to increase vascular tone and constrict blood vessels. The constriction helps to get the blood moving and reduce pooling. Butcher’s broom contains flavonoids that also support normal circulation and strengthen blood vessels. ^[1]

Butcher’s Broom, Varicose Veins, and Hemorrhoids

Varicose veins and hemorrhoids are common and associated with a loss of blood vessel integrity. Thus, supplementing with herbs, such as horse chestnut and butcher’s broom, that support the vascular system may help. Butcher’s broom is believed to improve both conditions by promoting healthy microcirculation, capillary flow, and strengthening connective tissue. It’s even been approved by the German Commission E (Germany’s version of the FDA) as a remedy for hemorrhoids and a 1999 clinical trial supported butcher broom’s reputation as a hemorrhoid remedy. ^{[2] [3]}

The Research: Does Butcher’s Broom Support the Circulatory System?

Research suggests that botanical extracts such as butcher’s broom support healthy circulatory system function and help to improve symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency. ^{[4] [5]}

Swelling of the legs, or edema, is a major, problematic symptom of chronic venous insufficiency. German researchers organized a 3-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the efficacy of butcher’s broom extract for remedying leg edema. Reductions in leg and ankle swelling among participants were observed; leading researchers to conclude that butcher’s broom may have promise for people suffering from circulatory system problems. ^[6]

In 2007, researchers in Mexico conducted an 8-week study in which 124 patients who complained of discomfort, leg heaviness, and edema related to chronic venous insufficiency were put on a daily regimen of two capsules of butcher’s broom. Within two weeks, reductions in complaints were observed. By the end of the study, no complaints remained. ^[7]

Supplementing with Butcher’s Broom

Although butcher’s broom is largely thought to be safe (and inexpensive), there are two caveats to mention before you add it to your nutritional program. First, problems like chronic venous insufficiency usually have larger, underlying causes such as obesity or a history of blood clots. In such situations, it’s wise to consult and work with your trusted healthcare provider, rather than self-diagnose using Dr. Internet. Additionally, chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins can sometimes result from pregnancy, and pregnant women should consult with their healthcare provider before taking butcher’s broom, or any other herbal therapy.

Centella asiatica, also known as gotu kola, is a parsley-like plant that’s native to much of southeast Asia. Gotu kola has long been a staple of both Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese Medicine and is beneficial for the circulatory system. It improves the flow of blood while strengthening the veins and capillaries. Research suggests it has a positive effect on circulatory system inefficiencies.

Why is Gotu Kola Effective?

Gotu kola contains several potent compounds but its most active are called pentacyclic triterpene derivatives. ^[1] These compounds have several beneficial mechanisms. They are known to assist capillary filtration, they have potent antioxidant action, they help reduce swelling, they help in the production of connective tissue, and they assist with angiogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels. ^[2]

Gotu Kola: The Research

Studies that have examined the use of gotu kola have reported that it helps stimulate circulation and provides support against arterial problems. ^[3] The Irvine Vascular Laboratory at St. Mary’s Hospital and Imperial College in London conducted a prospective, randomized study to determine if gotu kola extract was effective at improving microcirculation and edema. The six-week study included forty patients with venous hypertension; participants were split into control and placebo groups. The placebo group indicated no improvements. However, the group given gotu kola extract reported significant reductions in leg volume, leading researchers to conclude that gotu kola helps to improve microcirculation and edema associated with chronic venous hypertension. ^[4]

Gotu Kola and Chronic Venous Insufficiency

A condition known as chronic venous insufficiency occurs when veins become weak or damaged and don’t carry blood back to the heart, causing blood to pool. The legs are most often affected and discomfort, itchiness, and swelling are the primary indications of CVI. When blood collects in the legs, varicose veins, sores, and even blood clots can result. Gotu kola contains two compounds, asiaticoside and madecassoside, which are believed to help strengthen blood vessels and improve the indications of CVI. A review of available information by the University of Malaya concluded that gotu kola may offer significant improvements in circulation and help to reduce the discomfort and edema associated with CVI. ^[5] Additionally, a double-blind study published by the American College of Angiology consisting of ninety-four patients stricken with venous insufficiency found that gotu kola extract helped improve edema, leg heaviness, and overall wellbeing. ^[6]

Supplementing with Gotu Kola

Chronic venous insufficiency and other circulatory ailments affect millions of people. Compression socks and pharmaceuticals are often recommended therapies, so are diet and lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, the latter two are typically met with compliance issues. Circulatory problems are really not something to be complacent about. If they affect you, it’s time to get serious about improving your situation. When circulatory problems are the result of a sedentary lifestyle, your number one course of action should be to get active and stimulate your body. If you need supplemental support, consider using gotu kola. Gotu kola is largely thought to be safe and most side effects are limited to an upset stomach or headache. It is worth mentioning that gotu kola can make you more sensitive to the sun and increase your chance of sunburn. Additionally, gotu kola contains a compound called asiaticoside which is not recommended for persons with a history of precancerous or cancerous skin lesions. People with liver disease should also avoid gotu kola.

Some of the world’s best medicinal plants are found throughout the rainforests of South America. One in particular, Pfaffia paniculata, better known as suma, is a ground vine whose root has been used for centuries to promote health. In Portuguese, Suma Root is called “para tudo” which means “for everything”. The name is likely in reference to use it being used to improve various ailments including fatigue, anxiety, erectile malaise, and stress. ^[1]

Much of suma root’s traditional use has been as an aphrodisiac and evidence suggests it helps to support balanced hormone levels. The use of suma is widespread throughout South America and has even spread to the Caribbean. ^[2] Only recently, however, have the benefits of suma root gotten worldwide attention, and it’s become a primary ingredient in many formulas that support men’s health and hormone levels.

Why is Suma Effective?

Suma is very nutritionally rich. It contains antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins A, B, E, and K, minerals, and electrolytes. The electrolytes and B vitamins provide its energizing effect. Suma root is sometimes called “Brazilian ginseng.” A slightly misleading name though, as suma is not actually part of the ginseng plant family, it just has similar, energizing qualities. Suma also contains germanium, which boosts the immune system. Perhaps most interesting is that suma root contains two anabolic agents, allantoin and ecdysterone, that have been linked to muscle growth support and enhanced endurance.

Suma Root, Testosterone, and Muscular Health

Suma root contains ecdysterone which helps to support healthy hormone levels in men. When hormone levels are in check, the body is able to repair itself and grow more quickly. Suma has been popular with athletes as an alternative to steroids, even earning the name the “Russian Secret” due to allegations that Russian olympians have used it to enhance performance.

Research out of Russia has found that ecdysterone, combined with a high protein diet, promotes moderate gains in lean muscle mass and reductions in body fat up to 10%. Some research has shown that ecdysterone has a wider anabolic action than methandrostenolone and Dianabol, two powerful anabolic steroids. ^[3] It sounds like a tall order but in 2003, Japanese researchers also reported that phytosteroids were found to boost sex hormones, including testosterone, in animal models. ^[4]

Suma Root and Sexual Performance

Natives of the Amazon have used suma root for centuries to boost libido. Researchers at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy found that suma root lives up to its folk reputation as a sexual stimulant. They gave male rats suma root and reported observing significant improvements in sexual performance. What’s more, rats given the highest doses ejaculated more and faster. ^[5]

Supplementing with Suma Root

Men are interested in balancing their hormone levels for a variety of reasons. Some are experiencing symptoms associated with andropause, some strive for optimum physical fitness, and some are just after all-around good health. Regardless of the reason, evidence suggests that natural plants like suma may have something to offer.

There are no known safety issues associated with suma root. However, anyone who competes in a tested competition should avoid suma root. Both the World Anti-Doping Association and the National Football League have banned ecdysteroids like suma root, despite being all natural, plant compounds.

There is a popular expression in Brazil: until a father is 60, the son is his; after that, the son belongs to catuaba. No, catuaba is not a fertility god, catuaba is actually a small, flowering tree that’s native to the Amazon. Hundreds of years ago, Brazil’s native Tupi tribe discovered that catuaba bark has aphrodisiac qualities. Drinking catuaba tea to spawn erotic dreams and boost libido became a part of their culture. Now, catuaba is one of the most popular Amazonian aphrodisiac plants in the world and is included in many male enhancement formulas.

How Does Catuaba Bark Enhance Sexual Health?

Within Brazilian herbal medicine, catuaba bark is categorized as a stimulant and is even related to the coca plant. But, you can relax. Catuaba doesn’t contain any of the alkaloids found in cocaine.
