When a vehicle collision has occurred, a seat belt is rapidly locked due to shock of the collision. Effective time management is the basis of good personal and professional habits. It is a conscious decision where we decide what is important and then plan our time and our lives around these things. In a profession that requires you to juggle so many tasks and responsibilities every day, effective time management is absolutely critical to your success. Everyone starts the day with 24 hours, no more and no less. How much we achieve within these 24 hours depends on how well we manage what is important to us i.e. our priorities. This could be in the areas on financial, family, physical fitness, social interaction etc.

An important consideration for effective time management is finding regular times in your day when you can work uninterrupted. Do remember that perfect time management is not a realistic expectation. Effective time management requires us to actively clarify our priorities. This brings about peace and balance to your life. It is not necessarily about working “harder”, but rather, “smarter”. It is about getting yourself organized and being aware of what is important to your. It is simply based on an attitude and the choices you make.

For most people, time management is THE #1 stumbling block to their success. Poor time management is often due to underlying attitudes or beliefs. A good place to start is 10% of your pay and some obviously aren’t able to do that and some are able to do a lot more than that. It depends on how much you are making and where you live and what’s your appetite for consumer items. Basically 10 % is a good number.

You could set it up very easily on one of the features in Finance Management just by going through your check book for the last few months and looking at what your expenditures were and looking at your pay check and seeing what your take home pay is. I am sure there is personal finance software out there, but I just have not used it. I definitely think both a husband and wife should be involved. Usually, it’s the case where one is the leader and not necessarily the man. A lot of times it is the woman who takes control of the finances in the house which is fine, but both should be involved, otherwise you have one person doing it all but the other person doesn’t abide into it.

How to sell my products and/or services?

While large companies have funds allocated for advertising, home businesses have limited financial resources for promoting themselves. Undeniably, a business without advertising means no business. So, how can a homebiz owner, with a minimal budget, make her business known?

Mailing Lists

As soon as you start your business, send every single person in your contact list a postcard announcing your new business venture. Although they may not need your business just then, they just may tell someone else who does. Also, maintain contact with your potential clients by sending them seasonal greeting cards and other appropriate personal messages, whenever you get the opportunity. And don’t forget to include your business card in the envelopes.

Personalized Postcards

Postcards are least expensive, especially if you make your own (make sure it is according to Pos Malaysia’s acceptable postcard size). When advertising through postcards, make sure the message is simple but attention-grabbing and is personalized - address the receiver by name and remember to include all your contact details.

Signages

And lots of them, at your front gate, your relatives’ front gate, bulletin boards in your neighbourhood shops, bus stops etc. This is a good way for your neighbours to know that you are now operating your own business. However, always ask permission first before putting signages in properties other than your own.

Flyers

Insert your business flyer in your outgoing letters. You can also use a flyer-distribution service or have your children help you distribute them around your neighbourhood. Print your business logo or name with contact numbers on t-shirts or caps. Wear them whenever you go to the supermarket or neighbourhood shop. Don’t leave home without them. You never know when you might bump into someone who can help you in your business. Place magnetic signs or bumper stickers on your car so that, when you are driving down the neighbourhood, at the traffic light stop or parked at the local market/ supermarket, you are getting free advertising. Make sure the sticker is attractive enough to attract attention otherwise it will be just like any other sticker on a typical Malaysian car.

Word of Mouth

The least expensive form of advertising and maybe the most effective way to advertise your business is word of mouth. Simply tell those you come in contact with that you are in business for yourself. They will tell others and they will tell others and it can go on and on. Sooner or later someone may just be interested to know more about your business.

Press Releases

If you know how to write a press release, or you know someone who knows how to, go for it. You will find many valuable tips on writing effectively. When writing press releases, don’t just focus on your business. Be sure to give your write-up a human touch for that extra appeal.

Sponsor Events

Find out if there are any charity auctions or food fairs being conducted in your area and offer your services or products to them as part of their prizes or auction. When making the offer, make the organizers understand that although you may be working from home, you’re still in business to make some profit.

Referrals

Ask for referrals from happy customers. Cold calling will never be the same again if you use this approach. Make sure these happy customers are also repeat customers because being happy after using your product or service just one time is not enough.

Local Newspaper

You can usually get very reasonable rates. Ask your local paper if they would consider doing a story about your business. Local papers frequently do a write up for local business owners. Bear in mind that newspapers are only always interested in ‘human’ stories. Anything other than that is considered an advertisement and when that happens, it may cost you some money.

Friends

Make lots of friends. People like to feel good. When this happens, it also makes them feel important. So instead of trying to convince someone to see your point of view, you should see their point of view. When someone notices that you care, then they will be more likely to listen to you. Once that happens, you are guaranteed to have a friend, who is also a customer, who will become an indirect promoter of who you are, and of course, what your business or product is all about.

So there! You do not have to spend a whole lot of money to successfully advertise your service or product. All you need is a little creativity and some thought, time and effort put into your advertisement and you too can advertise your way to success.

How to choose A Smoke Detector?

Speak to your friends or neighbor about smoke detector that offers protection - whether it is powered by batteries or household current, whether it is photoelectric or ionization device.

How Many Do I need?

According to the accepted Standard on Household Fire Warning Equipment (NFPA-74), minimum protection requires smoke detectors outside each bedroom and on each additional story of the house. This includes the basement.

For additional protection, the Fire Chief recommends that you install detectors inside each bedroom, the dining room, furnace room, utility room and hallways. If your family sleeps with bedrooms doors closed, it’s especially important to install detectors inside the bedrooms. Detectors are also recommended for kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished) and garages. Be sure you can hear detectors from each bedroom.

Where and How Should I install My Smoke Detectors?

Most smoke detectors can be installed easily. Most operate either on batteries or household current. Detectors can also be hard-wires into the electrical system but never hard-wire a detector to a circuit that can be turned off at a wall switch.

Because smoke rises, each detector should be mounted high on a wall or on the ceiling to detect the first traces of smoke. For a wall-mounted unit, the top of the detector should be 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling. A ceiling-mounted detector should be placed at least 4 inches from any wall in a room with high pitched ceiling, mount the detector on or near the ceiling’s highest point.

Most home fires start in living areas - the den, family room or living room. On a floor with no bedrooms, install the required detector in or near the living area. If a stairway leads to an upper story, install the detector in the path where smoke would travel up the stairs.

Do NOT install a detector near a window, door or air register where drafts could reduce its sensitivity.

Maintaining Your Smoke Detectors

It is extremely important to test and clean all detectors regularly. Replace the batteries according to the manufacturer’s recommendations or at least once a year.

Warn everyone in your household to leave working batteries in smoke detectors - resist temptation to borrow them for other purposes.

Never paint a smoke detector because cobwebs and dust can impair a detector’s at least once a week to make sure you are protected.

What happens when the fire alarm Sounds?

Being awakened by a smoke detector can be a frightening and disorienting experience even for adults - so plan your escape before there is an emergency.

First of all, make sure everyone knows what your smoke detector sounds like. So test it in front of the entire family. Plan at least two ways out from each room - especially the bedrooms. Agree on a place to meet outside the house or apartment building so you will know when everyone is out.

Have everyone rehearse the plan regularly. In case of a real fire, get out of the house immediately. Once at the meeting place, have one person go to a neighbors phone to call the fire department by dialing 999. In addition to telling them your name and address, tell them if anyone is still in the house.

In combination with a family escape plan, properly installed and maintained smoke detectors can save lives in case of fire.

1998年畢業于馬來西亞藝術學院並榮獲最佳學生獎。师事我国著名歌唱家陈容及女高音歌唱家叶洁芝。同年以特优成绩考获英国Guildhall音乐学院演唱证书。1999年考获英国伦敦音乐学院Diploma of Licentiateship演唱证书。2001年遠赴意大利羅馬深造，追隨男高音歌唱家Umberto Borso. 2003年曾參加國際著名男高音歌唱家Pier Miranda Ferraro大師班，深受讚賞。同年，進入羅馬音樂研究學院修習聲樂及歌劇表演，師從男高音歌唱家Giovanni Bavaglio, 及指揮家Stephen Kramer. 2005年首次參加國際歌唱比賽以傑出的表現，深受國際著名男高音歌唱家Gianni Raimondi的賞識并赛后亲自给以指导。2006年以最佳成績考入意大利Pescara Luisa D’anunzio 國立音樂院，師從男中音歌唱家Paolo Speca。同年，张金龙首次在罗马举办个人演唱会，并对意大利文的演唱诠释博得了專家和觀衆的一致好評。在校期间深受师长的爱戴曾多次在演出中擔任獨唱及領唱。2008年7月，以最高榮譽畢業。

Solomon Chong Kim Lung

Solomon graduated with the Best Student Award from Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) in 1998 under renowned Malaysian tenor Armando Chin Yong and soprano Cecilia Yap. After his graduation, he managed to obtain the Certificate of Voice Performance with distinction from Guildhall. In 1999, he completed the Diploma of Licentiateship, a performance certificate from the Royal Music School of London. He then went to Rome, Italy to further his studies with renowned tenor Umberto Borso.

His musical talent was recognized at the International Music Conference organized by the renowned tenor Pier Miranda Ferraro. Then he continued his studies in voice and stage performance in the Rome Music Conservatory College and received tutelage of renowned tenor Giovanni Bavaglio and conductor Stephen Kramer. In 2005, he participated in the International Voice Competition. He received overwhelming response from the floor. His excellent performance has earned him critical acclaim from renowned tenor Gianni Raimondi who later became his teacher.

In 2006, he was accepted by the Italian Pescara Luisa D’anunzio National Music College and trained under baritone Paolo Speca. In the same year, Solomon made his much anticipated debut performance in Rome. The public were mesmerized by his Italian repertoire and were truly fascinated by him. Since then, he established himself as a young talented tenor. He graduated with distinction in July 2008.

My mother was a wise woman. I later found out from an Australian
naturopath that barley is known to be a kidney cleanser, and he happily
downed glasses of it at a meal we had in a coffee-shop here.

Barley is good for your intestinal health too. Try to eat the barley
grains you find in your drink or sweet broth with fu chook (beancurd skin) and ginkgo nuts.

It’s high in fibre which feeds the friendly bacteria in the colon and
helps speed up the transit of fecal matter in it. In this way it helps
prevent haemorrhoids and colon cancer.

The propionic acid and beta glucan from barley’s insoluble fibre also help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of gallstones.

Eating barley regularly is a preventive step against heart disease as,
besides the fibre content, it is also high in niacin, a B vitamin good for
lowering cholesterol.

Diabetics should eat more barley as the fibre will prevent blood sugar
levels from rising too high. It also provides relief from constipation or
diarrhoea for those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Barley is rich in selenium which prevents cancer and relieves symptoms of asthma and arthritis. It is a good source of manganese, copper and phosphorous.

Malt sugar comes from sprouted barley which, when fermented, is an ingredient in beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Barley, whose Latin name is hordeum vulgare, has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years.

Since ancient times, barley has been used for healing purposes and has
been known to the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Athletes in
Greece and Rome in those days were known to eat barley bread to give them strength.

Besides the usual things we do with barley, I enjoy having it in a western soup. The larger pearl barley is used and I love the sticky bite of it.

Here’s a recipe for barley soup:

Barley soup with roasted garlic

1 cup pearl barley
5 cloves whole garlic, roasted
2 litres chicken stock, steeped from 1 chicken breast simmered in three litres water
2 tbsps vegetable oil
2 large onions, diced
2 carrots, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
150g turkey ham, cut up
1 tsp ground white pepper
1 tsps sea salt or to taste
1 tbsp chopped parsley

Method
1. Wash barley and soak it in a bowl of water for three hours. Drain.

2. Heat oil in pan and fry onions. Add carrots and celery, then the barley and fry for three minutes.

3. Add chicken stock, pepper and roasted garlic and simmer over low heat for at least an hour, or until barley is soft.

4. Add salt to taste and serve the soup garnished with chopped parsley.
