In Israel, Less Than One-Third Of Delta Variant Deaths Are In The Unvaccinated

Written by Steven Hansen

The U.S. new cases 7-day rolling average are 8.7 % HIGHER than the 7-day rolling average one week ago and U.S. deaths due to coronavirus are now 35.4 % HIGHER than the rolling average one week ago. Today's posts include:

U.S. Coronavirus New Cases are 170,722

U.S. Coronavirus deaths are at 1,470

The Supreme Court blocked President Biden's moratorium on evictions in a 6-3 ruling on Thursday.

Fed chief signals support for the economy could begin to be pulled back this year if recovery stays strongly on track

Israeli Study Shows Natural Immunity 13x More Effective Than Vaccines At Stopping Delta

An antibody therapy that appears to neutralize all known SARS-CoV-2 strains, and other coronaviruses, was developed

Biden says U.S. health officials are weighing Covid booster shots in 5 months, moving up third shot

Almost half of the patients hospitalized with COVID-19 early in the pandemic had at least one lingering symptom a year after symptom onset

A supply chain crunch that was meant to be temporary now looks like it will last well into next year as the surging delta variant upends factory production in Asia and disrupts shipping, posing more shocks to the world economy.

Is another pandemic recession on the way? The next few weeks will tell

100,000 more COVID deaths seen unless the US changes its ways

Contaminants in Moderna vaccines suspected to be metallic particles

Plus Many More Headlines ...

How Does A Household's Exposure To Monetary Policy Vary Over The Life Cycle?

from the Atlanta Fed

A recent study by Feiveson et al. establishes the Federal Open Market Committee's interest in the distributional effects of monetary policy. The size and the composition of household income exhibit large variation over the life cycle, so it is likely that household exposures to monetary policy also depend on age. This post summarizes new research by Daisuke Ikeda and me that uses a life cycle model to measure the age profile of household exposures to monetary policy. In the model, a higher nominal interest rate increases the wealth and consumption of households between the ages of 60 and 80, but it reduces the wealth and consumption of younger working-age households and the oldest retirees. The former group also has the highest net worth, and it follows that net worth and consumption inequality increase in the model.

Written by Sig Silber
We have tried to provide the most important information in as short a format as we could. This meant no regional reports and no NASS reports. We have provided the week crop progress report which has not changed much and continues to look pretty good. Clearly the reservoir situation is not good, especially Lake Powell. There is a lot more in the article and as usual we include the intermediate-term weather forecast. There is more from NOAA on the State of the Climate so you might want to read that. 21 August 2021 Initial Unemployment Claims Rolling Average Improves

Market expectations for weekly initial unemployment claims (from Econoday) were 325 K to 362 K (consensus 340 K), and the Department of Labor reported 353,000 new claims. The more important (because of the volatility in the weekly reported claims and seasonality errors in adjusting the data) 4 week moving average moved from 378,000 (reported last week as 377,750) to 366,500

Written by John Lounsbury

This week we are repeating a video from last November that I consider one of the most important we have present on this website.. It addresses what Lars Syll has called a wonkish subject. Be that as it may, the concept is so important in financial and economic analysis, and so often abused, that it should be repeatedly studied until it is no longer wonkish, or until you become a wonk. If you pursue this recommendation you will have the tools to become a rich wonk, should you so chose.

Kennedy.

Ex-CIA chief says chaotic Afghanistan exit is Joe Biden's 'Bay of Pigs' moment.

I like example 2 above so much that I want to probe it further dot-dot-dot

Pfizer Losing Efficacy Faster Against Delta Variant

from Statista.com

-- this post authored by Katharina Buchholz

A new study out of the UK has shown that the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is waning faster than others when up against a high viral load mutation of the coronavirus, like the Delta variant. The study comes at a time when several countries, among them prominent users and early adopters of the Pfizer vaccine like the U.S. and Israel, have announced they will be giving out third doses of coronavirus vaccines, so-called booster shots. Since both the U.S. and Israel have been experiencing a rise in new infections, the countries are hoping to increase immunity among those having received a coronavirus vaccine through the additional shot.

Here Is Why Military Submarine Propellers Are Kept Secret

The primary design objective of the modern subs, is noise elimination. Noise can give off can give away the position of the sub. The noise is generally created by cavitation. When it comes to the designing of submarines, the blades are designed so that they are capable of creating thrust while keeping cavitation to a minimum. Older submarines could manage speeds of only 2 or 3 knots. Today's subs are able to achieve speeds of eight to ten knots while maintaining the same noise level.

Where Employers Struggle To Fill Open Positions

from Statista.com

-- this post authored by Felix Richter

With a record number of job openings, historically few layoffs and millions of Americans quitting their jobs voluntarily, the balance of power in the U.S. labor market appears to be shifting. As the economy recovers from its COVID slump and employers are looking to staff up, more and more workers are holding out for better, safer, or higher-paying jobs. In June, for the first time since the pandemic brought the U.S. economy to a standstill in the spring of 2020, the number of job openings exceeded the number of unemployed Americans, signaling excess demand in the labor market.

August 22, 2021 Seasonal Forecasts: Part II, NOAA Comparison with JAMSTEC

Written by Sig Silber

We published the NOAA Long-Term Forecast Part I on August 19, 2021. Tonight we compare the NOAA forecast for Alaska and CONUS with the JAMSTEC forecast. We show the maps side by side in a table with a summary. Obviously, the farther out you look, the less confidence you have in the forecasts and thus also the differences in the forecasts. Also provided are the JAMSTEC World Forecasts. They are worth looking at. JAMSTEC has sent us their forecast privately as their website is still not functional. What they have sent us includes a monthly forecast for each of the first three months so we are also able to compare the NOAA and JAMSTEC September forecasts this time. Surprisingly the amount of disagreement is pretty significant.

<img alt="NOAA v.
Labor Productivity In A Pandemic

from the San Francisco Fed

-- this post authored by John Fernald, Huiyu Li, and Mitchell Ochse

U.S. labor productivity has grown quickly during the pandemic compared with the past decade. However, this rapid pace is unlikely to be sustained. Similar to the Great Recession, the primary reasons for strong productivity growth now are cyclical effects that are likely to unwind as the economy continues to recover. For example, the number of workers has fallen, so capital per worker has risen - raising labor productivity in the short term. What effect the pandemic itself might have on productivity remains uncertain.

Back then, almost 14 million people depended on the emergency programs. And while the labor market situation has improved significantly since then, the new cut-off date is fast approaching, leaving millions in doubt of what is possibly their only income.

from the Atlanta Fed

Data from the Current Population Survey tell us that, in the second quarter of 2019, 47.8 percent of those aged 55 and older said they didn't want a job because they were retired. By the second quarter of 2021, that share had risen more than 2 percentage points, to 49.9 percent, which is an increase of around 2 million retirees over what would have been expected if the retirement rate for those aged 55 and older had not changed.

Written by John Lounsbury

Treatment of Lyme Disease has been controversial for the past 30+ years. A group of doctors who treat the disease as a prinmary practice are at odds with the larger medical community and the CDC (Center for Disease Control). The major source of disagreement is whether Lyme Disease is a simple bacterial infection that can be successfully treated by a short course of an appropriate oral antibiotic or can it be a more persistant disease in some cases requiring extended periods of treatment.

It sold its share in the Cerrejon coal mine in Colombia to Glencore (the world's biggest mining company) in June. 20 August 2021 Coronavirus And Recovery News: New Report Says Moderna COVID Vaccine May Be Associated With A Higher Risk Of Myocarditis In Younger Adults Than Previously Believed.

A cocktail of long-acting antibodies administered intramuscularly as COVID-19 prevention cut the risk of developing symptomatic disease in a high-risk unvaccinated patient population.

Written by Steven Hansen

The U.S. new cases 7-day rolling average are 14.2 % HIGHER than the 7-day rolling average one week ago and U.S. deaths due to coronavirus are now 47.9 % HIGHER than the rolling average one week ago. Today's posts include:

U.S. Coronavirus New Cases are 159,787

U.S. Coronavirus deaths are at 1,734

WHO to Launch Another COVID Origin Investigation, This Time With an Independent Panel

World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was perhaps not as soft on China during the pandemic as was previously thought,

72% of the two largest insurers in each state and DC (102 health plans) are no longer waiving patient cost sharing for COVID-19 treatment

1 in 5 medical researchers reports pressure from funders to change study results

Risk of household SARS-CoV-2 transmission may be equal among children and adults

COVID-19 vaccines may trigger superimmunity in people who had SARS long ago

A COVID-19 medical exemption is a little like having an emotional support python: In the vast majority of cases, it's unjustifiable, irresponsible, and needlessly dangerous.

Plus Many More Headlines ...

Market expectations for weekly initial unemployment claims (from Econoday) were 350 K to 395 K (consensus 360 K), and the Department of Labor reported 348,000 new claims. The more important (because of the volatility in the weekly reported claims and seasonality errors in adjusting the data) 4 week moving average moved from 396,750 (reported last week as 396,250) to 377,750

Rethinking The Great Housing Bust Of 2007-8

by Timothy Taylor, Conversable Economist

There's a standard story about the underlying causes of the Great Recession of 2007-9. I'm sure I've told it myself a time or two. It starts with excessively easy lending for home mortgages - including the so-called 'sub-prime" loans - aided and abetted by financial engineering that repackaged these loans as 'collateralized debt obligations" and sold them to investors, including banks. The surge of mortgage lending helped to stimulate home prices to unrealistically large annual increases. But reality eventually catches up. Home prices drop from their unrealistic highs, borrowers are unable to repay their mortgages, the financial sector seizes up, and recession is unleashed.

A rundown of their locations gives an overview of where Afghans typically seek refuge. 85 percent of Afghan refugees can be found in Afghanistan's neighboring countries Iran and Pakistan, while Germany comes third with 148,000 - or around 5.5 percent - of Afghan refugees counted in late 2020.

28 July 2021 FOMC Meeting Minutes: Seems Like The Fed Is Saying Asset Tapering Will Be Sooner Rather Than Later

The 28 July 2021 meeting statement presented the actions taken. This post covers the economic discussion during this FOMC meeting between the members. An interesting quote:

... Many participants remarked upon risk-management considerations when contemplating how and when to make changes to the Committee's pace of asset purchases. Some participants suggested that it would be prudent for the Committee to prepare for starting to reduce its pace of asset purchases relatively soon, in light of the risk that the recent high inflation readings could prove to be more persistent than they had anticipated and because an earlier start to reducing asset purchases would most likely enable additions to securities holdings to be concluded before the Committee judged it appropriate to raise the federal funds rate. ...

Home to some 150 people, Rathlin is well-situated for its climate change initiative. It's only been on the electrical grid since 2007.

Return Of The Original Phillips Curve

from the San Francisco Fed

-- this post authored by Peter Lihn Jorgensen and Kevin J. Lansing

The link between changes in U.S. inflation and the output gap has weakened in recent decades. Over the same time, a positive link between the level of inflation and the output gap has emerged, reminiscent of the original 1958 version of the Phillips curve. This development is important because it indicates that structural changes in the economy have not eliminated the inflationary pressure of gap variables. Improved anchoring of people's expectations for inflation, which makes the expected inflation term in the Phillips curve more stable, can account for both observations.

Each country has different preferences for goods, and vehicles are no different. Consumers in a dense country might prefer smaller cars, while countries with wide expanses (and parking spots) open the way for larger trucks.
Infographic Of The Day: Mercator Map Misconceptions

The vast majority of us aren't using paper maps to chart our course across the ocean anymore, so critics of the Mercator projection argue that the continued use of this style of map gives users a warped sense of the true size of countries - particularly in the case of the African continent. Mercator's map inadvertently also pumps up the sizes of Europe and North America. Visually speaking, Canada and Russia appear to take up approximately 25% of the Earth's surface, when in reality they occupy a mere 5%.

Did greed just save the day? That's what British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed recently. 'The reason we have the vaccine success," he said in a private call to Conservative members of Parliament, 'is because of capitalism, because of greed."

Colleges Are Using Federal Stimulus Money To Clear Students' Past-Due Debts - An Economist Answers Five Questions

from The Conversation

-- this post authored by William Chittenden, Texas State University

Editor's note: A growing number of colleges and universities across the country are using money from the American Rescue Plan to clear their current and graduating students' debt. The American Rescue Plan was signed into law in March 2021 and allocated nearly $40 billion to the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III. Colleges and universities may use a portion of these funds to cover lost revenue, including unpaid student account debts. Here William Chittenden, an expert on debt in higher education, explains what this means for college students' futures.
