They found that implementing inclusive institutions in poorer colonized nations contributed to long-term prosperity. This insight helps us understand why some previously wealthy colonies are now impoverished and vice versa.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>In some countries, the presence of extractive institutions and low economic growth presents a challenge. Transitioning to inclusive institutions would bring about long-term benefits for everyone. However, the short-term gains provided by extractive institutions often serve the interests of those in power. As long as the political system guarantees their continued control, it&#8217;s difficult for people to trust promises of future economic reforms. According to the laureates, this lack of trust is a significant obstacle to improvement.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>In times of potential revolution, those in power face a challenging decision. While they may initially attempt to appease the public with promises of economic reforms, the lack of credibility in these promises can ultimately lead to the establishment of democracy as the most viable solution.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>&#8220;Reducing the significant income disparities between nations is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. <strong>Paris / New York, September 27, 2024&#8212;Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has designated Daniel Humm, a celebrated Swiss chef and advocate for plant-based cuisine, as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Food Education. The official appointment took place on Tuesday at Eleven Madison Park, his three-Michelin-starred restaurant in New York.</strong></p>

<p><strong>&#8220;Daniel Humm is much more than one of the world&#8217;s most gifted chefs. He is a passionate advocate for sustainable nutrition who has staked his career on his beliefs, defying the skeptics and proving that the finest cuisine can be an ally in protecting our precious planet. A luminary in the culinary community, no one is better placed to promote the powerful connections between food and education,&#8221; UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated.</strong></p>

<p><strong>&#8220;I am deeply honored to join UNESCO as Goodwill Ambassador. The language of food is so powerful, and together, we will work to demonstrate how choices around food can create solutions and empower future generations, as well as to bring further awareness to Indigenous culinary traditions and their critical role in sustainability and food equity,&#8221; Three-starred chef, Daniel Humm, remarked.</strong></p>

<p><strong>As a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Daniel Humm will direct his efforts toward food education, a topic at the intersection of the Organization&#8217;s mandate. It aligns with global initiatives on environmental and health education, the preservation of intangible cultural practices, and the safeguarding of natural heritage and biodiversity in the context of climate disruption.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Audrey Azoulay and Daniel Humm have established an agreement wherein the latter will advocate for UNESCO at prominent international assemblies, such as the forthcoming COP for biodiversity scheduled for late October in Colombia. Additionally, he will promote UNESCO-designated sites that embody agricultural, culinary, and gastronomic heritage, encompassing World Heritage sites, Biosphere Reserves, and UNESCO&#8217;s network of 350 Creative Cities, 56 of which are specifically designated as cities of Gastronomy.</strong></p>

<p><strong>To promote sustainable food practices, Chef Humm will host a plant-based public dinner with Chef Mauro Colagreco in January 2025 as part of his Goodwill Ambassador initiatives for UNESCO.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Daniel Humm will also actively participate in developing a new UNESCO International Food Atlas, which will promote and safeguard hundreds of culinary traditions and foodways inscribed on UNESCO&#8217;s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Born in Switzerland, Daniel Humm earned his first Michelin star at 24. He later became the Executive Chef at Eleven Madison Park in New York, which received three Michelin stars and was named the #1 restaurant in The World&#8217;s 50 Best Restaurants in 2017.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Humm co-founded Rethink Food, a nonprofit based in New York City that aims to create a more equitable and sustainable food system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniel Humm launched several initiatives to provide nutrition to food-insecure New Yorkers. It included repurposing his high-end restaurant as a kitchen producing 2000 meals a week for the Organization. These efforts prompted a reflection on how to address global food insecurity and develop more sustainable food production systems.</strong></p>

<p><strong>In 2021, Chef Humm initiated a significant departure from his culinary history by transitioning the menu at Eleven Madison Park to an entirely plant-based offering. Notably, the restaurant retained its prestigious three Michelin stars, signifying the first instance in which a plant-based establishment achieved this distinction. This decision was motivated by environmental concerns, including climate disruption and overfishing.</strong></p>

<p><strong>With 194 member states, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) contributes to peace and security by leading multilateral cooperation on education, science, culture, communication, and information. <strong><em>Emily Wilkins, President of the National Press Club, Washington, DC, has issued the following statement concerning a reported incident in the Dallas, Texas, area that may have infringed upon the First Amendment Rights of Rohit Sharma, a Member of the National Press Club.</em></strong></p>

<li><p><strong>&#8221; According to a recent article in India Today, and confirmed in conversations between Mr. Sharma and an NPC Board member, Sharma was at a hotel near the Dallas Airport awaiting the arrival of Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader in India, who was beginning a U.S. tour. While waiting, Sharma interviewed the Chair of the India Overseas Congress (IOC), Sam Pitroda. The two had previously met, and the interview was conducted professionally with an agreed-upon recording.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>&#8220;Some members of the India Overseas Congress (IOC) and Mr. Gandhi&#8217;s advance staff were present during the interview. When Mr. Sharma raised a question that the audience objected to, they stopped the interview by shouting at him, pushing him, and taking his phone. Members of the group, including Gandhi&#8217;s staff, deleted files from Sharma&#8217;s phone and kept the phone from him.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>&#8220;Pitroda, who had been whisked to the airport to meet Gandhi, later apologized to Sharma. He had no objection to Sharma&#8217;s question and was in the process of answering when the audience erupted. Later in the week, Rahul Gandhi answered a similar question at a Newsmakers event at the National Press Club.</strong></p></li>
<li><p><strong>&#8220;Security staff must be aware that reporters working in the U.S. are protected by the First Amendment, regardless of the nationality of the interview subject, reporter, or security teams. It was an on-the-record interview with ground rules set between Mr. Sharma and Mr. Pitroda. The security team had no role related to the content or duration of the interview. They had no right or standing to take Sharma&#8217;s phone from him or delete content.&#8221;</strong></p></li>

<p><strong>The occasion, marking the culmination of a collaborative initiative that commenced in September 2023, encompassed the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Bisleri&#8217;s Plastic Waste Material Recovery Facility on the PU campus, representing a significant stride toward sustainability. Over 300 zealous students participated, convening to bolster sustainable practices and recycling endeavors within the campus environment.</strong></p>

This collaboration will streamline the processing and recycling of used plastic stored at the PU Plastic Waste Material Recovery Facility and various used plastic collection banks on the PU campus.</strong></p>

<p><strong>The occasion also signified the introduction of a specialized vehicle for the regular collection of plastic waste from both the Panjab University and Chandigarh City. The vehicle, provided by Bisleri, will deposit the collected waste in the PU On-Campus Plastic Waste Material Recovery Facility for subsequent transportation and recycling.</strong></p>
