Help these women purchase industrial kitchen equipment

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
This project benefits the Chumpon commnity in Zona Maya. Due to the isolation of this jungle community, it is hard for these people to benefit from the prosperous tourism industry in nearby Cancun. The community has been forced to migrate to tourist resorts to look for work, leaving their families and having to live in Cancun. As people leave their villages, traditional customs, skills and ways of life are gradually vanishing.

Activities
Having completed the training, registered the product & brand name, the women are now just waiting for the last of the vital equipment needed to finish the kitchen. This project will raise funds for this equipment.

Potential Long Term Impact
The project will help create new opportunities for Maya women, allowing them to benefit from tourism and increase their income so that they can provide for their families

Project Message
"This is a dream come true for these Maya women who have invested nearly three years now into starting up their small jam business."
- Rachel James, Programmes Officer in Mexico

Project Sponsor: The Travel Foundation
Theme: Women and Girls | Location: Mexico
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£25,860
Project #2881 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

To do this we urgently need a vehicle to safely and legally transport the children.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
We allow underprivileged children to experience their local environment. We inspire these children to protect their environment and inform them about eco tourism job opportunities. We develop the children’s self-confidence while diminishing the stigma of apartheid through working with international volunteers. We give a safe home to orphaned and injured wildlife. We urgently need a vehicle to safely and legally transport the children.

Activities
Weekly 8 kids are collected from their village and taken to the bush school where they stay for 5 days. Rescued animals, bush walks and lessons inspire students to care for their environment. Children are also taught about life skills and careers.

Potential Long Term Impact
Today’s local underprivileged children will be able to secure good employment in nature reserves. The children, future custodians of nature, will be inspired to protect wildlife and their fragile environment. Transporting them safely is essential.

Project Message
I believe the future of our environment lies in the education of our children. If people care about nature, they will look after it. Transporting the children to and from their village safely is vital
- Ian Merrifield, Director

Project Sponsor: DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage
Theme: Children | Location: South Africa
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£20,122
Project #3013 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

The farmers have generally only small lands (average of 2 hectares) which they are able to cultivate by hand. They face many barries to progress and have few opportunities for income. Specially young people loose often hope for the future and try to migrate. Their concern is how to earn an income which can improve the quality of life. Therefore the Project IZZI has startet programs to create secure jobs.

Activities
1. Cooking of raw rice in big pots. 2. Drying on mats.
3. Milling of the dried rice in the huller. 4. Cleaning of the milled rice in the distoner. 5. Filling the rice in ricebags (10, 20, 50 kg). 6. Marketing.

Potential Long Term Impact
The project makes it possible that 10 people with their extended families escape poverty in a rural area.

Project Message
"The rice mill is very important for Igbeagu-Izzi!"
- Chief John Ndugo, General manager of the Development Project IZZI

Project Sponsor: Entwicklungshilfeverein IZZI
Theme: Economic Development | Location: Nigeria
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£3,989
Project #2996 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

We are working in one of the poorest communities in Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, and we offer the participants new skills for enabling them to live more safely, generate income from other sources, and perform their stories to audiences such as the police, by whom they would never normally be heard or respected.

Activities
If we can train and employ core groups of sex workers to work with their younger peers, we can reduce their vulnerability to HIV infection and abuse.

Potential Long Term Impact
This project will empower 120 sex workers to protect themselves, to generate alternative sources of income, and to influence the attitudes and policies, particularly among the police, that can provide them with legal protection.

Project Message
"TfaC brings us support and methods - it is up to us to put them in the context of our lives. She walks 14km to and from school every day so she can have a better future. But her school may soon be gone...

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Thanks to the selflessness of Saviour's teachers, most of whom are unpaid, the walk is worth it: education is the only way to break the cycle of poverty in which the 5,000 strong community are trapped. The current school is a borrowed building which is terrible for learning: there's no glass in the windows, the desks are broken & the roof leaks during the 5 month rainy season. There is also no clean water or sanitation. Now they stand to lose even this, as the owners want the building back.

Activities
The school needs a classroom and a teacher's house. The parents already made 60,000 bricks themselves. And they are happy to provide labour for free too. But they can't afford building materials like cement, windows, doors and roofing materials

Potential Long Term Impact
Once Simakakata has a school with teacher's houses the government will start to send trained teachers, guaranteeing the community good quality education on an ongoing basis.

Project Message
“When you have an educated community most things can be done easily for ourselves"
- Richard Sikalunda, Headman, Simakakata

Project Sponsor: LearnAsOne
Theme: Education | Location: Zambia
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£12,947
Project #2992 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Centre Marembo offers these young people to find a way out of poverty through emotional support, education, training, apprenticeships and accommodation.

Activities
If young people can attend the centre they will gain information, training and support enabling them to learn skills and make informed decisions about their lives. Those living at the centre and attending school will gain secondary education.

Potential Long Term Impact
The project currently serves around 100 young people each week and aims to reach many more in Kigali. By providing information and access to training and education, young people - who represent Rwanda's future - will be able to achieve their goals.

Project Message
'CM gives me hope that there can be a better future for young people. We face challenges in our work seeing sick and hungry children. There is so much more to do.'
- Nicolette Nsabimana, Project Coordinator

Project Sponsor: Rwandan Youth Information Community Organisation
Theme: Education | Location: Rwanda
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£58,590
Project #2862 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

A development tool used to heal rifts and spreads health messages in this post-conflict area

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
The Soroti region of Uganda has been hit by war, cattle raids and insurgency over the past two decades. In 2003 the Lord's Resistance Army invaded Katine, causing many to flee their homes.
The people of Katine now have the worst health and living conditions in rural Uganda, and most people live on less than $1 a day.
As well as uniting communities and spreading vital health messages the tournament will also instil a sense of hope and pride amongst villagers.

Activities
Health messages disseminated throughout the tournament will impact on the health of the community, reducing incidence of preventable diseases such as malaria, diarroea, TB and HIV/ AIDS. Messages will reach young people through sport as a medium.

Potential Long Term Impact
The tournament will revitalise sport across Katine enabling similar competitions in the future. Pitches constructed will provide a lasting legacy for the children of Katine. Sport will reinforce health messages to ensure a healthier future.

Project Message
"Football is the No1 sport right across Africa and is a great hook for attracting young people and getting them involved in social development"
- Federico Addiechi, Head of FIFA's CSR programme

Project Sponsor: AMREF UK (African Medical & Research Foundation)
Theme: Health | Location: Uganda
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£24,162
Project #2993 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

We will use solar power to reduce the use of gas and fuel in our centre, which inspires & educates underprivileged children

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
We allow underprivileged children to experience their local environment which is their heritage. We inspire these children to protect their environment and inform them about eco tourism job opportunities. The project is far from supplies. We can only make a trip to town once a week and fresh supplies need to be refrigerated or frozen. Solar energy will be used to power our centre.

Activities
Weekly 8 needy children attend bush school at the wildlife orphanage. Rescued animals, bush walks and lessons inspire students to care for their environment. Children are tutored on school subjects and are also taught about life skills and careers.

Potential Long Term Impact
To run the office, 3 fridges and 3 deep freezers Daktari has to run generators and gas which are colossal expenses affecting our survival. Being equipped with solar power will reduce our cost whilst reducing the pollution using clean energy.

Project Message
As we educate underprivileged children to care for their environment it is essential to use clean energy as model and create awareness about this brilliant source of power while reducing our costs.
- Ian Merrifield, Director

Project Sponsor: DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage
Theme: Environment | Location: South Africa
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£17,117
Project #2731 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Help Malawi communities get water and sanitation

Pump Aid aims to reach 275 households in Mzimba district, northern Malawi.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Pump Aid works with rural communities in Malawi. Malawi is among the world’s poorest countries ranked in the bottom 10% in the Human Development Index. An ongoing national water point mapping project, indicates that only 57% of the rural population have access to safe water, for sanitation it is as low as 15%. As a result water-related diseases, including cholera and typhoid, are common.

Activities
At Pump Aid we believe that an integrated approach to the provision of water, sanitation and nutrition is vital if health benefits are to be maximised.

Potential Long Term Impact
Clean water - Pumps are built near homesteads, saving people over 5 hours each day collecting water. This allows children, particularly girls to attend school. Access to clean water and sanitation alleviates suffering from water-borne diseases.

Project Message
We now have a clean place to go to the toilet, we are healthy and we no longer have to go in the bush, we have privacy. Thank you.
- Kowama, 63 years old, Malawi, Beneficiary

Project Sponsor: PUMP AID
Theme: Health | Location: Malawi
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£8,751
Project #2641 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Educating 250 deafblind children in India

They are isolated, ignored and even locked away. This project in east India, one of the poorest areas in India, will build the bridge between these deafblind children and the world, so that they learn to communicate, gain vital life skills, make an economic contribution and flourish like other children. Parents of deafblind children often feel overwhelmed with stress, but this project will also give them confidence and support.

Activities
There are 3 main activities to this project: bringing education to the heart of the community through support for deafblind children in the home; training community workers; becoming a hub for training in deafblindness for east India.

Potential Long Term Impact
The impact of the project is huge. The long-term vision is for the project to become a Centre of Excellence in training, expertise and support for deafblind children and their families, across east India - one of the poorest areas of India.

Project Message
My daughter is so much happier and confident. Last week for the first time she called out to me saying 'Maa' (mother in Hindi). I waited nine years to hear those special words.
- Sahila, Mother of Alisha, a deafblind girl

Project Sponsor: Sense International
Theme: Children | Location: India
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£20,103
Project #2652 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

These adults who step in as guardians are increasingly overburdened and unable to cope as tradition expects. As a result of this lack of resources, bereaved children are not given the nurturing that they need.

Island Hospice provides education and support to these guardians through home visits and guardian support groups.

Activities
Orphaned children are identified through Island Hospice and their guardians are contacted by hospice social workers. Home visits are made to identify specific needs of the child for whom they are caring, and support groups are run.

Potential Long Term Impact
The goal is to foster a family environment for bereaved children that will optimally support their development.

Project Message
We learned Sibo is not a bad girl, but her way of acting is about her grief. Understanding has helped us act more sympathetic towards her and we were amazed to see her behaviour change quickly.
- Mrs Ruth Mangwezi, Maternal aunt and guardian of Sibusile aged 10

Project Sponsor: Island Hospice and Bereavement Service
Theme: Children | Location: Zimbabwe
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£2,507
Project #2655 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Through this project local people will be able to plant trees to preserve their water supplies and provide new food and income sources.

Activities
Seeds collected by local people will be grown at a central community nursery and distributed to four villages for planting. The project will provide tools and equipment including pots, watering cans, protective clothing and locally sourced compost.

Potential Long Term Impact
The project will provide permanent protection of healthy drinking water supplies of four rural village communities and a source of fresh food, wildlife habitat and income from honey production and plant use in each community.

Project Message
"Water is the greatest food" - Kingomen village head, pilot project beneficiary community.
- Julius, Kingomen Village Head

Project Sponsor: BTCV
Theme: Environment | Location: Cameroon
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£6,291
Project #2654 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

CPALI teaches them silk rearing that bolsters family income by 60-200% and restores habitat.

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Madagascar faces an environmental and economic crisis. Its own people, in struggling to survive, are destroying the country’s unique biological heritage. Compensatory subsidies, previously used to dissuade farmers from encroaching on protected areas are not sustainable and stifle farmer independence. We seek to extend a proven, locally implemented, methods of wild silk production and give 300+ families living near the Makira protected area access to profitable markets.

Activities
Maintain CPALI demonstration site. Construct 5 more demonstrations in new villages near Makira. In each village provide 5 farmers with 1000 host plants, 9000 moth eggs. Provide on-site instruction & technical support for two years.

Potential Long Term Impact
Economic uplift for subsistence farmers, their families and communities during a difficult period in the history of Madagascar and in the survival of critically endangered wildlife.

Project Message
"Poverty won’t allow him to lift up his head; dignity won’t allow him to bow it down."
- Malagasy proverb, Trad.

Project Sponsor: Conservation through Poverty Alleviation
Theme: Environment | Location: Madagascar
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£34,373
Project #2650 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Women and children spend more than two hours to fetch water. This takes time and energy away from efforts to pursue activities such as child care, attending school, and farming. The UN and the Ministry of Health reported in 2005 more than 120,000 cases of diarrhoea, 4,200 of cholera, and 17,000 of parasitic intestinal diseases.

Activities
-Provide water hand pumps (5 m3/h each) for up to 30,500 people.
-Train 150 user leaders in hand pump operation and maintenance.
-Organise awareness raising campaign to 1,500 community members in health, hygiene and sanitation

Potential Long Term Impact
-Improved health and longevity,
-Attitudinal change toward health and sanitation,
-improved maintenance and sustainable use of water resources,
-improved economic productivity of local communities ,
-Increased household income and reduced poverty

Project Message
None
- None, None

Project Sponsor: Conserve Africa Foundation
Theme: Environment | Location: Mauritania
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£24,061
Project #2649 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

Permanent Clean Water for a Community in Kenya

$5 — Gives one person clean water for life
$27 — Gives a family water for life
$398 — Provide skilled artisans to support the community building the dam

Summary
The members of Uvaani community group in Mbooni district, southeast Kenya have asked for support to build a sand dam so 1,200 people can have their own local source of clean water. (See pics for info)

Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Uvanni community live in a semi arid area where water is in short supply. Women and children spend hours a day collecting water from far away, thus having no time for education, housekeeping and generating income. 46 associated community members have approached Excellent for support to build a sand dam: it will capture the seasonal rain and filter it through the river sand. This will positively impact the wider community of 9,600 people by providing year-round clean water for at least 30 years

Activities
The community gets ownership of the project: They will collect the sand and stones needed, build the dam & terrace the land next to the site in order to grow food. Excellent Development will provide technical support, cement and monitor the progress.

Potential Long Term Impact
Very low maintenance technology, a sand dam typically provides permanent clean water for 1,200 people, allowing them to grow more food, plant trees and raise livestock. The local water table will also be recharged, improving the environment.

Project Message
"I love the dams more than anything, because they came out of nowhere. We have created our own springs for our own people."
- Joshua Mukusya, Founder/Exec. The main threats to their survival are greater demand for agricultural and living spaces for people, logging, bush meat poaching and capture of young chimpanzees for the pet trade. We work to intercept and report this activity and provide vetinary care and a safe home for chimpanzees that are caught up in these activities and can do this by working with local communities to support their needs too.

Activities
Many chimps are very distressed when they first arrive at Tchimpounga. Our local staff care for the chimps and give them food, shelter and medical attention. We also help the chimps to become acquainted with other chimpanzees again.

Potential Long Term Impact
The Sanctuary is currently housing 140 orphaned chimpanzees. Over the last two years we have had 40 chimpanzees brought to us, and in the past year alone, we have seen more than a 20 percent increase in the number of chimpanzees brought to us.

Project Message
New resident Timi (10) is afraid of storms. His care taker said "When lightning starts, Timi acts like a tiny baby and tries to stay close to his mates so that he doesn’t feel alone against the danger
- Fernando Turmo, Program Co-ordinator, Congo

Project Sponsor: Jane Goodall Institute
Theme: Animals | Location: Congo, Republic of the
Funding to Date: £0 | Need:£34,572
Project #2663 on GlobalGiving.co.uk

These children spend their days in a small room sitting or lying on padded mats, ‘guarded’ by an elderly woman who stops them physically harming themselves and makes sure they don’t escape. There is no play equipment and children tend to rock and moan as a form of self-stimulation. Some have their hands tied if they are a risk to themselves or others.

Activities
We will recruit and train two care workers and develop a programme of activities for each individual child supervised by a UK qualified Occupational Therapist, refurbish the room providing toys and equipment and create a quiet space for storytelling.

Potential Long Term Impact
The aim is to give these young people a quality of life, help them interact with and enjoy their surroundings. Some will go on to receive an education. Others will become more independent, learn to make choices, work in the home and feel valued.

Project Message
These young people have had nothing their whole lives.
