A Home for the Deaf

Currently, DBM houses 73 Deaf children in its school, while over 200 Deaf church members receive spiritual and community support. With the capacity to welcome more students, DBM faces financial challenges in meeting daily expenses. To sustain this mission, each child requires $25 per month, an amount that covers food, education, and healthcare.

A Journey of Faith and Progress for the Deaf

The past year, 2024, has been marked by tremendous progress and divine blessings for DBM. With a renewed commitment to its mission, fueled by the support of the community and divine guidance, the ministry has taken major steps forward, including:

• Launching the First Translated Video Bible in Naga Sign Language, beginning with the book of Jonah, with ongoing work on Ephesians.
• Publishing a Naga Sign Language Textbook, officially approved by the government for training teachers, expanding educational opportunities for the Deaf community.
• Training Six New Missionaries, including three from the U.S., two from Sikkim, and one from Manipur, who will soon serve the Deaf community globally.
• Expanding Gospel Outreach, bringing people from Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian backgrounds into a transformative relationship with Christ.

Despite these achievements, DBM faces challenges due to new government restrictions on foreign visitors in Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. These regulations create obstacles for those seeking training and mission work within India. DBM seeks prayers and support to overcome these barriers, ensuring the continuation of its life-changing ministry.

In the heart of Manipur, India, Pastor Mayonsing Moinao is transforming lives through his dedication to education and evangelism at Elim School. With a background as a teacher, school head, and missionary, Pastor Mayon has combined his passion for faith and learning to make a lasting impact on his community. Recognizing the lack of quality education in the village, he and his church established Elim School—a beacon of hope for children who otherwise would have limited opportunities for learning and growth.

A Testament to Faith and Education at Elim School

Elim School was built in response to the pressing need for quality education in the village. However, education is just one part of the mission; ensuring the well-being of the students is equally crucial. The school has provided more than just learning opportunities—it has also addressed basic needs such as clean water. Previously, villagers had to walk to a nearby spring to fetch water, but through the efforts of Pastor Mayon and his team, a temporary plastic water tank was installed, making clean water accessible to students and their families.

Yet, much more is needed to create a sustainable learning environment. While the school fees assistance has been a lifeline for many families, additional support is required to give students a safe and suitable place to study. 

The Call for Support: Urgent Needs of Elim School 

Pastor Mayon is reaching out to kind-hearted individuals who can help ensure that Elim School continues to be a place of learning and transformation. The mission’s current funding needs include:

• Student Fee Sponsorships: Many students come from underprivileged backgrounds and need financial assistance to continue their education.
• Rain Harvesting Water Tanks or Bore Well Drilling: A sustainable water source is essential for the community’s long-term well-being.

Beyond his work in Manipur, Pastor Mayon continues to spread the Gospel through Bible preaching, evangelical youth camps, baptism, and church planting. His latest efforts in Myanmar resulted in 31 individuals receiving water baptism—a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to sharing God’s love.

Pastor Sekhar’s Fasting Prayer Meeting in January 2025

In January 2025, Pastor Sekhar’s ministry experienced a powerful season of spiritual growth and renewal. One of the most impactful events was the Fasting Prayer Meeting held on the 20th and 21st. For seven continuous hours, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, attendees gathered in prayer and immersed themselves in the Word of God, with no lunch break. The atmosphere was charged with the Holy Spirit, as hearts were deeply moved by God’s presence. Many were filled with the Holy Spirit, and some young people wept, touched by the Holy Ghost in a profound way. By the second day, attendance had increased, as more people were drawn to experience the power of the Lord.

Reaching Out to Those in Need

Beyond the prayer meetings, Pastor Sekhar and his dedicated team were actively reaching out to the community. A special women’s meeting was organized to encourage and uplift women, providing them with a safe space for spiritual growth and support. On January 26th, the ministry turned its focus to widowed mothers, offering spiritual care to help them navigate their challenges. Their outreach efforts also included personal, one-on-one Gospel preaching, ensuring that even the most remote individuals received the message of Christ’s love.

Empowering Leaders: Pastors’ Conference

Another significant event was the Pastors’ Conference, where leaders from various regions gathered to be strengthened and equipped for the work of ministry. These conferences are a crucial part of Pastor Sekhar’s ministry, providing pastors with the tools and encouragement they need to lead their congregations and spread the Gospel effectively.

Looking Ahead: Tribal Ministry and New Horizons

As the year progresses, Pastor Sekhar is preparing for a journey to the tribal areas in the first week of March, where the Gospel will be shared with some of the most unreached regions. This mission will bring the message of hope to communities that have never heard the Gospel before, continuing Pastor Sekhar’s dedication to reaching those who need Christ the most.

A poignant example of this urgent need is found in the heart of Vijayawada city, where 10-year-old Rani spends nine hours each day scavenging through garbage dumps, searching for reusable items like plastic and glass to sell. This arduous task is not her choice but a necessity imposed on her to support her family, which includes three older sisters and a one-year-old brother.

Despite her circumstances, Rani harbors a fervent desire to study and dreams of a different future. “I don’t want to collect garbage for money. I want to study,” she declares, seeking a helping hand to achieve her aspirations.

Rani’s plight is emblematic of the struggles faced by many Dalit (formerly known as Untouchables) families in India. For these communities, education often takes a backseat to immediate survival needs. Parents frequently involve their children in laborious tasks such as rag-picking, working in hotels, or brick-making from as early as seven or eight years old. This practice stems from a deeply ingrained belief among slum residents that education is an unaffordable luxury and a waste of time.

The Stark Reality of Education Among Dalits

Dalit communities in India have some of the lowest literacy rates in the country. Over 80% of Dalit girls and 40% of Dalit boys do not attend secondary school. Girls, in particular, face severe discrimination, with almost 60% being married off between the ages of 16 and 18. A survey reveals that 93% of Dalit families live below the poverty line, making it difficult for them to afford educational expenses. As a result, many children drop out of school due to the lack of basic supplies like notebooks and backpacks, sacrificing their future prospects for immediate financial relief.

It is estimated that every seven seconds, a girl under 15 is forced into child marriage, missing out on the opportunity to start a new school year and instead beginning a life of disadvantage. This alarming statistic underscores the education crisis in India, particularly among Dalit children. These children, who deserve the ‘precious gift’ of education, are often deprived of this opportunity due to systemic poverty and societal neglect.

The Transformative Power of Education

Education is not just a pathway to knowledge; it is a means to dignity and empowerment. It enables individuals to envision a world beyond their immediate circumstances. However, in India, education remains largely a privilege of the elite. The need to make education accessible to poor children, especially those from Dalit communities, is more urgent than ever.

Rani’s story is a call to action for all of us. We must provide children like her the opportunity to go to school and dream of a future beyond rag-picking. This cannot happen without concerted efforts to make education accessible and affordable for all. Education equips individuals to break free from the cycle of poverty and to aspire for better futures.

Our Role in Making a Difference

It’s easy to overlook the plight of children suffering due to poverty. “Out of sight, out of mind.” The children who suffer in poverty are not visible to you. But they do exist in our present world. 

Helping Dalit children access education is not just a charitable act but a moral imperative. We must strive to create an environment where every child, regardless of their socioeconomic status, has the chance to receive an education and pursue their dreams. By doing so, we honor our shared responsibility to make a child’s life better and provide them with hope for the future.
