2012-01-30T01:31:00.003+07:00

RIM is trying to hit the market by presenting this phone. BlackBerry Bold 9900 reinforced with 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB RAM memory and 8 GB of internal memory.

2012-01-30T01:09:00.000+07:00

The next generation of RIM's Playbook tablet will, confirmation comes from the same CEO Thorsten Heins after several speculations about the past few days. According to a roadmap unveiled by BGR boys of the processor will be faster (this is called a dual-core 1.5 Ghz) and will have an NFC chip to provide integrated on-board transactions in short-range mobility and connectivity.

Thorsten Heins has also confirmed that Playbook is already in construction sites, yet adopting a diagonal within 7 inches, mount the new system for BlackBerry OS 2.0 playbook and may already debut in stores in May and June.

In recent months, RIM has unfortunately had to resort to price cuts particularly important not to find themselves with excess inventory in the first generation of STORAGE Playbook and the company hopes that with the introduction of the new model will see an improvement in sales and return to competition in the area of the tablet.

Amazon mulled buying Blackberry maker RIM

2012-01-10T22:35:00.001+07:00

Although Amazon sought advice from the investment bank this summer, it did not make a formal offer, a source told Reuters.

It is not clear whether informal discussions between Amazon and RIM ever led to specific price talk, or who else had approached RIM about a takeover.

RIM's board wants co-chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie to focus on trying to turn around the business through the launch of new phones, better use of assets such as BlackBerry Messaging and restructuring, two sources said.

While RIM could strike technology licensing deals and other kinds of commercial partnerships to boost revenue, an outright sale or joint venture is not on the cards for now, they said.

"They have had approaches from folks who have wanted to have discussions," said one head of technology investment banking at a Wall Street bank. "The issue is it is hard to find a value that makes sense with a falling knife."

RIM's market value has plunged 77pc in the last 12 months to about $6.8bn (£4.34bn) following a series of disappointing quarterly reports, delayed phone launches, weak sales of the PlayBook tablet and a major fault in October that caused millions of BlackBerry users to lose service.

The shares tumbled last week on weaker-than-expected quarterly results and the announcement of a delay in the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 phones.

Amazon and RIM are still discussing ways to expand their commercial ties, which currently include a service launched last year to make Amazon's music catalog available to some BlackBerry users, according to the sources.

RIM and Amazon declined to comment.

RIM delays Blackberry 10 phones

2012-01-10T22:19:00.002+07:00

The new OS will power a new generation of phone, which the company hopes will allow it to reduce the increasing dominance of Google Android and Apple, and to fend off the challenges coming from Nokia and Microsoft.

RIM said that it could not get enough chips for its new phones and that the delays were unavoidable.

The company’s co-CEO Mike Lazaridis also disappointed investors by cutting its prediction of sales to between 11 and 12 million smartphones in the current Christmas quarter, down from 14.8 million over the same time last year.

The delays mean the BB10 range, which will use the QNX operating system that runs the BlackBerry PlayBook, will now be available late in 2012, rather than by March. The PlayBook itself has however cost BlackBerry an extra $365million in charges for unsold devices.

"It may take some time to realise the benefits of the platform transition that we are undertaking, but we continue to believe that RIM has the right set of strengths and capabilities to maintain a leading role in the mobile communications industry,” RIM's joint chief executives Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis said in a statement.

RIM's share of the smartphone market in the US fell to 9.2 per cent in the third quarter from 24 per cent in the same period last year, according to research group Canalys. Analysts said that the latest bad news will only increase the pressure on RIM to try to find a buyer.

Net income was $265m (£171m) for the quarter up to 26 November. That was down from $911m in the equivalent period of 2010. In after-hours trading, shares dropped by more than 6 per cent.

BBC iPlayer app comes to BlackBerry

2012-01-10T22:14:00.002+07:00

The BBC has released an application that will allow users of BlackBerry smartphones to access the iPlayer catch-up television service on their handset.

The iPlayer application is compatible with the BlackBerry Storm 2, the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the BlackBerry Torch 9800.

Customers who have monthly contracts with Vodafone and Three will be able to access iPlayer via the 3G mobile phone network, while those on other networks will only be able to watch EastEnders and The Apprentice, or listen to Woman’s Hour, over Wi-Fi.

The BBC iPlayer application for BlackBerry devices is available to download free of charge from BlackBerry’s app store, BlackBerry App World.

A similar service is already available for Apple’s iPhone, and although no official iPlayer client has been released for Google Android devices, several workaround exist to allow users to access the catch-up television service.

Technology predictions for 2012

2012-01-10T22:02:00.003+07:00

Rumour has it Apple will launch a television set in 2012. Making predictions about what Apple is planning is a risky business but here goes: I think we'll see an Apple TV set with content delivered as iOS-style apps.

Catch-up TV services, streaming films from Lovefilm and Netflix and live sport from Sky could be brought together to create an a la carte television offering. Certainly, it's unlikely to deliver everything and that will put off lots of viewers. The current offering of films and TV shows for British Apple TV users, for example, is far less comprehensive than it could be.

However, releasing a TV would encourage more providers to make their content available. I feel quite sure that this is what's coming. The only thing I'm not sure about is that it's coming in 2012. Even late 2012 might be too early for such a bold product. We'll see.

2. Kindle Fire lands in Britain

Amazon launched the Kindle Fire in the US at the end of 2011. Despite some mixed reviews, the budget tablet has been selling well - at least, according to the limited information that the online bookseller has made available. We had to wait a long time before the Kindle ereader was released in Britain but it's a fairly safe bet that we will see the Kindle Fire here before the end of 2012.

As production ramps up, it's possible that Amazon could be ready to expand outside the US in the spring but it's more likely that the Kindle Fire will launch internationally in the autumn, ready for the Christmas boom.

There's also a good chance that there will be a new version of the Kindle Fire by then - either a second, larger tablet or an improved version of the original. Amazon has a good record of improving the Kindle with each generation, so there's a good chance that British buyers will be getting a better product than the one which has launched this year in America.

3. YouView finally launches

Next year YouView, the long-awaited internet connected TV set top box from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, Arqiva, and TalkTalk, is finally expected to make its much overdue debut.

It had been billed to launch in 2010, but has been best with delays due to technical glitches.

This year Lord Alan Sugar was brought on board to ferry the process along and get the boxes onto shop shelves. The proposition, self-styled as the next generation of Freeview, is meant to be a well executed product – but it remains to be seen what consumer appetite there is for YouView.

4. Google+ fails as a social network

Google+ is unlikely to beat Facebook as the world’s leading social network anytime during 2012. Plus after Facebook’s highly anticipated $100bn float, it will have a major war chest to invest in the site and spend on improving its reach.

In 2012 Google+ is more likely to become another feature of the Google suite of web products, rather than a killer social network which can rival Facebook’s dominance.

Certain Google+ features, such as ‘Circles’, are likely to be fun additions to the way people communicate and share certain bits of information on Google-owned sites, such as YouTube. However, it is highly unlikely that Facebook will have to worry about a major rival in the form of Google+ next year.

5. Grim for RIM

The BlackBerry maker looked increasingly out of its depth through 2011 as the mobile computing revolution was advanced by Apple, Google and Microsoft.

RIM lacks the enormous cash reserves of those rivals, its smartphones are dated (with updates disastrously delayed), its tablet is a debacle and its market share is plummeting. The spike in RIM’s low share price when it was revealed that Amazon had toyed with an acquisition shows that in 2012 the firm will be a major target.

The outlook if RIM tries to turn things around on its own, as its executives say it will, is grim.

6. Google antitrust woes

In 2012 we’ll discover if Google is a dangerous monopoly. Its dominance of web search is almost complete, but the question under consideration by the European Commission is whether Google abuses that dominance to promote its sideline businesses at the expense of rivals.

The evidence that has emerged so far doesn’t look great for Google. Eric Schmidt is already making conciliatory noises in the hope of reaching a settlement and avoiding the enormously costly and distracting legal quagmire that so damaged Microsoft in the late 1990s.

Will BlackBerry survive 2012?

2012-01-10T22:00:00.003+07:00

It seems that every month BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion has more bad news to announce. In November it paid a $365million charge for unsold PlayBook tablets; yesterday it announced that crucial new phones would now be delayed to the latter half of 2012, rather than being out by March.

Co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis charitably cut their pay to just a $1 each, but analysts and critics argued they’re still overpaid. One writer on the respected blog PaidContent blog said the pair should have been “fired months, if not years ago”.

At the heart of BlackBerry’s problems lie its troubled transition to a new operating system: in order to compete with the iPhone and with Google’s Android phones, the Canadian company has had to rebuild its software from the ground up. So far, the only product using a new version is the underwhelming PlayBook.

Yesterday, announcing RIM’s results, Lazridis delivered the bad news almost casually. The new OS will power a new generation of phone, but in order to compete RIM had earlier changed its mind on which chips to use. Now he said RIM could not get enough of them and that delays were unavoidable.

Lazaridis compounded the disappointment for investors by cutting the firm’s prediction of sales to between 11 and 12 million smartphones in the current Christmas quarter, down from 14.8 million over the same time last year. Others companies’ sales are rising at his expense.

Blackberry ditches new phones to focus on ‘London’

2012-01-10T21:59:00.002+07:00

The troubled company had previously been working on handsets codenamed ‘Colt’, ‘Milan’ and ‘London’, but the Canadian firm is now focusing all its energies on one device, according to BGR.com.

It is currently being shown to networks, and BlackBerry has already confirmed to journalists that demonstration of BlackBerry 10 will take place at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona next month.

BlackBerry is also set to demonstrate the updated version of the BlackBerry Playbook software at the Consumer electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, but it has yet to publicly announce a launch date for integrated email into the tablet device. It recently slashed prices in a bid to boost sales of the 7” device.

The London is likely to ship late in the summer. RIM has been working with Porsche Design on a handset that is currently on sale at Harrods in London, and some leaked images suggest that the new handset could take its design cues from the £1,275 P'9981.

It has been a difficult year for RIM, with its share price declining sharply. With pressure growing on the company's joint CEOs, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, the firm has reportedly been examining the appointment of a new chairman.

RIM updates BlackBerry PlayBook

2012-01-10T21:54:00.003+07:00

The new BlackBerry PlayBook operating system will allow it to recieve email without being connected to a BlackBerry smartphone. The lack of built-in support for email has been one of the main criticisms that have dogged the iPad rival since it was introduced last year.

RIM also said a new operating system for its smartphone, version 7.1, would be available from today.

Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said at CES 2012 that "with BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 we are building on this strong foundation, as well as leveraging our strengths in communications, social integration and productivity, to allow people to use their BlackBerry PlayBook in new ways throughout the day."

The update will add native email to the PlayBook and will finally remove the need to tether the device to a BlackBerry phone.

A new unified inbox will allow users to mix work and personal email accounts, while multi-tasking will let users have multiple email messages open, either in plain or rich text.

Like Microsoft's Windows Phone, RIM will also integrate social networking calendars and contacts. It will now also allow a BlackBerry handset to act as a remote control, for instance movies streamed from a PlayBook to a TV, or as a keyboard for the PlayBook.

RIM said it is also updating corporate and Office features, as well as improving the App World and its US Video Store and introducing a new 'reader' web browsing mode that shows just the text on a web page.

Blog Techcrunch wrote that the update provided "everything and more that the PlayBook was previously missing. Had the so-called BlackBerry tablet launched with the proper email support, it might not be on a fire sale right now".

BlackBerry OS 7.1 will add sharing via NFC as well as the ability to turn a phone into a portable wifi hotspot. BlackBerry Traffic and Travel apps will also be updated, while users with a BlackBerry Curve 9360 or 9380 smartphone will now be able to use the already built-in but previously inactive FM radio.

11 Superb Concept Phone Designs

2012-01-05T10:06:00.003+07:00

Ever wondered how the phone of the future will look like? Phone producers show us every year some really superb concept phones and even if 99% of those phones never see the production line they give us a small glimpse of what the phones may look like in a not so distant future. In this post, we will present you with 11 Superb Concept Phones, they all have something special here and there, like some incredible flipping feature, awesome social networking function, see through design and our creative designers also think about some special but useful designs for blind and deaf.

1. Bio – A Incredible Flip Phone

Here’s a flip phone that could put the “cool” back into clam shells. When a phone call or an email comes to you, “bio” informs you by lifting the edge of its cover. And if you touch it lightly, the cover automatically opens to “B” position. Its movement is not strong, but it helps your action gently. The cover is made of elastomer that is inserted with actuators like artificial muscles. When you enjoy web browsing or movies, the cover is turned to the backside, like a magazine held by one hand. You can hold “bio” tight with the rounded cover as a grap and operate it with buttons that appear on the cover.

2. Trypoxy Phone

Looks like a smooth pebble but for the ultimate web browsing experience, the rear has a soft-gel-like grab extension that can pulled out. It fits snugly in one hand and has built-in controls to pinch and squeeze your way through the internet with simulated buttons for scrolling and moving back/forth through pages.

3. Voim – Smartphone Concept for the Blind

It features route navigation, word recognition and object identification, which are displayed as braille on a silicon screen or transmitted as audio cues via the detachable blue tooth headset. Although smart phone applications & braille cell phones do exists, a full-fledged concept like this is a ways away.

4. Transparent Concept Phone

The Second Life Mobile Phone Concept works on the premise that we often forget about the battery life of our mobile phones, hence run out of juice, just at the wrong time. As a remedy (rather power-saver-option) the phone incorporates a double display. When in active use the AMOLED screen powers up in all glory and in standby mode the E-ink display gets active. This essentially means that the E-ink uses very little energy and the degree of transparency of the display shows how much battery is remaining. The more transparent the display, the less battery remaining.

5. Blackberry Empathy Phone

The phone is used in conjunction with a biometrics ring that is worn by the user to collect “emotional data”. Spec-wise it features a transparent OLED screen that becomes transparent when not in use and opaque during interaction. The front is all touch surface, while on the back there is a physical keyboard.

It is touch based and all the user’s connections are shown graphically so you can see who is connected to whom. Each contact has an avatar that is encompassed by two colored rings. The inner colored ring shows the contact’s previous emotional state, and the outer ring represents the contact’s current emotional state. It is important to show the shift in emotions in order to see how an event has affected that contact. Another important feature that was the “Emotional Health Chart”. This chart would monitor the user’s emotional health through an indefinite period of time.

6. Sony Ericsson FH Mobile

Sony Ericsson FH Mobile Phone has a pivotal point to it. It flips vertical on a pivot to mimic a phone and rotates sideways to become a viewing screen for the media functions and web browsing. The phone even becomes an intercom of sorts when split into two, allowing easy communication between the two parties holding each end.

7. 3D Mobile Phone

Focusing on the use of 3D in cellphones, Petr Kubik has designed this all-in-one-piece that includes the glasses, intuitive stylus and expandable screens. The 3D apps support 3D movies and camera plus allow you to make surreal calls with family and friends that pop outta the screen!

Here are some of the specs envisioned for the 3D Mobile Phone:

* Photovoltic screen at the rear for instant recharging
* Dimensions: 66×133x14mm
* Expandable Touch Display size: 177×104mm
* Interactive stylus
* 3D Glasses
* Adjustable Leg Support

8. Concept Phone for Deaf

Pratt student Suhyun Kim is quite concerned about the deaf folks and wants them to enjoy technology as much as we do. Her Visual Sound is a mobile phone for the hearing impaired that converts voice input to text and text input to voice. The design features two handy pillars that scroll sideways to expose the roll-out display. To communicate, the impaired person feeds in the text onto the touchscreen display, which gets converted to voice simulation for the person on the other end of the phone and vice verse.

9. Mobile Script Cell Phone Concept

Big screen consists of 2 layers: a soft OLDE – touchscreen and soft nano material hardening in the filing of low-voltage nego. At the time opening screen hard and bouncy, after work on the side of the screen is pressed Eject, and becomes soft and mosey inside. The “Mobile Script” mobile phone does not require a power charge, its case is covered with a nano material, converting the Sun light into the energy for your phone feed. At your phone’s display you can watch how much charge is left at the battery and how strong the power of the light which charges the battery is.

10. Window Phone

The Window Phone is a concept mobile phone that is able to transform its appearance like a window as per the weather. The phone is designed as a thin, clear and transparent plastic sheet, which remains clear during a sunny day, becomes humid during a rainy day and takes a dump outlook during a snowy day. The user can write text messages or draw pictures on the phone in different weather conditions which will later transform and show as SMS characters. The screen features sensitive interaction with the user and comprises the state of a window in different weather conditions.

11. Next Generation iPhone – NOT A Phone

Ambitious designer Samuel Lee Kwon’s concept design of the iPhone shows just what the folks expect out of Apple products in the future. Samuel’s concept iPhone comprises of a small wrist worn projector that has a few icons of its own. When you click on the respective icons, the main body of the phone gets projected on your palm. Yes, it’s that cool! Turning your palm into a touchscreen, you then start interacting with your phone.
