This post was written by Rob Reed. He is the founder of MomentFeed, a location-based marketing, strategy, and technology firm.

Location technologies are transforming how we experience, navigate, and ultimately better our world. From the global to the local, here are #10Ways geolocation is a positive force for good.

Social media has changed the world. It has revolutionized communications on a global scale, and the transformation continues with every status update, blog post, and video stream. The global citizenry has become a global network.

Since becoming widely adopted just a couple years ago, social media has supercharged social action, cause marketing, and social entrepreneurship. Indeed, the true value hasn’t been the technology itself but how we’ve used it. Today, a second wave of innovation is defining a new era and setting the stage for change over the coming decade.

Mobile technologies will extend the global online network to anyone with a mobile device while enabling countless local networks to form in the real world. We’ve decentralized media production and distribution. We’re doing the same for energy. And we’ll continue this trend for social networking, social action, and commerce.

The combined forces of smartphones, mobile broadband, and location-aware applications will connect us in more meaningful ways to the people, organizations, events, information, and companies that matter most to us—namely, those within a physical proximity of where we live and where we are. Can location-based services (LBS) change the world? Here are #10Ways:

1. Checking in for Good: If Gowalla and Foursquare have taught us anything, it’s that people respond to simple incentives. By offering badges, mayorships, and other intangible rewards, millions of people are checking in to the places they go. Apps like Whrrl take this a step further and enable like-minded “societies” to form on a local basis. The next step is for these apps to add greater purpose by encouraging more meaningful checkins and offering corresponding badges and stamps, thus mapping the cause universe. Or for a dedicated app to be developed that rewards conscious consumption, social responsibility, and civic engagement. Yes, the CauseWorld app features a cause element, but it’s not about cause-worthy places.

2. Eating Locally: Sustainability demands that we source our food as close to its point of production as possible. Many so-called locavores subscribe to the 100-mile diet, which requires that one “eat nothing—or almost nothing—but sustenance drawn from within 100 miles of their home.” Given the difficulty of accessing and verifying this information in order to live by this standard, there’s a geo-powered Locavore app. It gives you info on in-season foods, those coming in-season, farmer’s markets, and links to recipes. This rather simple app is clearly just the start. In time, location-aware apps will guide us not only to the grocery store or farmer’s market but through them. All the while identifying foods based on our particular diet or sensibility.

3. Political Organizing: In the next presidential election, politics will not only be local but location-enabled. We saw the power of social media in Obama’s 2008 landslide victory. In 2012, location-based apps and technologies will play a central role in how campaigns are organized, managed, and ultimately won. Much of this will be visible through mobile apps and location-aware browsers. Activists and volunteers will be more empowered. Voters will be more engaged in the moment, right down to casting their votes. Behind the scenes, though, we’ll see massive new sets of data available to campaigns for targeting, empowerment, and optimization. The party, candidate, and/or cause that has the best handle on geolocation will have a measurable advantage. (The Elections app will soon be updated for 2010.)

4. Finding Green Businesses: The web has effectively replaced the paper Yellow Pages as a way to find local businesses and services. However, this “stationary web” experience is quickly being supplanted by the mobile web and mobile applications, which give us access to this information when we most need it. The Yelp and Around Me apps are popular ways to find restaurants, coffee shops, or hotels wherever you are, but what about green-rated businesses? Greenopia has transformed its printed, local guides into a dynamic, nationwide mobile application that lets you find local, green-rated businesses in any category. No more paper and a much better experience. The Green Map app is another that facilitates discovery and connects us to local green environments.

5. Traveling More Efficiently: We’ve had access to GPS navigation systems and static traffic information for some time, but only now are we seeing the full potential of these technologies. With access to more detailed traffic information that is specific to your route and updated in real time, we can minimize congestion and maximize traffic flow (as much as physically possible). The new turn-by-turn MapQuest 4 Mobile app is a good start, as you can get traffic alerts specific to the route you program. However, user-generated information from apps like Trapster and Waze can crowdsource more specific details, such as whether to avoid an intersection due to a toxic chemical spill. Or, if you want to avoid automobiles altogether, Google Maps makes it easy to use public transportation and take a bike.

6. Scanning for Ethical Products: With online shopping, we’ve become accustomed to reading reviews and making comparisons before we buy. This can now be done in the physical world through games like MyTown and services like Stikybits. By scanning a product barcode using a smartphone camera, you can unlock a treasure of additional information (not to mention deals) that can help with your purchase. This might include where it was produced, how far it traveled, the reputation of the manufacturer, chemical contents, carbon footprint, or the full lifecycle analysis. Location-aware applications can also transform commerce itself by giving us better access to local inventories and locally-produced goods. Whether it’s fruits and vegetables or books and electronics, if something can be found within blocks of your current location, it makes no sense to ship it from afar.

7. Networking Neighborhoods: One of the hottest categories in geolocation is neighborhood networking. The vision for many of these apps is to strengthen the very fabric of our communities. With DeHood, you can keep track of what’s happening in your neighborhood, share your favorite places, and grease the wheels for actually meeting people. After all, if you’ve made contact through the app, it’s a lot easier to say “Hello” in the real world. Blasterous is another that lets you share information locally, whereas BlockChalk does this on an anonymous basis. Finally, NeighborGoods uses your street address to facilitate one-to-one borrowing and trading of useful stuff. In the end, making connections with your neighbors can lead to safer, more productive, and more sustainable communities.

8. Tracking Environmental Disasters: The size and scope of environmental disasters appears to be growing. In 2008, we had the Tennessee coal ash spill, which was billed as “the largest environmental disaster of its kind in the United States.” And that was before we realized it was three times bigger than originally estimated. More recently, the BP oil spill set daily records for “largest environmental disaster in the U.S. ever.” In each case, geolocation technologies can be used by engaged citizens to monitor and track the effects. They can be used by response teams to coordinate containment and cleanup efforts. Ultimately, these technologies can be used to accurately measure the size and impact of a disaster in order to better understand its damages and costs.

9. Viewing the World Through an Eco Lens: Augmented reality (AR) follows geolocation as one of the hot trends in mobile technology. It enables you to view the world through a smartphone camera (or similar device) and see layers of geo-specific content or information. One of the most popular apps is Layar, an augmented reality browser/platform that lets you choose specific data layers or experiences. The potential for green- and cause-related content is tremendous. You might view green-rated businesses, LEED-certified buildings, or virtual GHG emissions as they enter the atmosphere. Combined with smart meter technology, you could see the most efficient and inefficient homes around you in real time. And for the cynics among us, you could view our mountains, forests, rivers, and oceans as they once were…before the effects of climate change and so many environmental disasters.

10. Capturing the Moment: Better access to information about what’s happening around us—right now—can dramatically improve quality of life. This sense of “geospatial awareness” is possible through today’s smartphones, whereby a piece of content or information—a moment—is captured and preserved based on the unique time and place in which it occurred. It is essentially to document spacetime. Protests, natural disasters, sporting events, parties, political crises…real-time information about anything happening anywhere at any time, as well as the history of what happened. This will take several years and a number of different applications to realize. In the end, though, it will revolutionize how we access and consume content. It will complete the democratization and decentralization of news and information…based on time and location.

Cautionary note: Privacy is the single biggest issue in the LBS industry. It’s important to understand what information you are sharing with regard to your location and with whom.

Author’s note: We’ll be hosting geolocation events for Social Media Week in Los Angeles this September. This is the third in Max Gladwell‘s #10Ways series of distributed blog posts.
When you study the development of civilization over the past 10,000 years it becomes readily apparent that mankind’s lifestyle has shifted from one of respecting nature to one of consuming nature – not a sustainable trend!

The Global Oneness Project has produced a very thought provoking video featuring Julia Butterfly Hill, in which she speaks of how modern society has sadly embraced the habit of living a disposable life, and the consequences of our doing so.

Click here to view the embedded video.

How often do we think about where trash ends up? And do you ever consider where that trash came from in the first place? Julia brings such questions to light and gives us pause to consider how our waste is, in turn, wasting the planet itself. Spend five minutes watching this video, then reflect on your own lifestyle for a moment.

Have you added your name to the National Do Not Mail List?

Do you diligently practice Reduce, Reuse and Recycle?

How efficient is your method of transportation?

Julia Butterfly Hill

Julia Butterfly Hill brought attention to the plight of the world’s last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 ft into the branches of a thousand year-old redwood tree and refused to come down. Her protest of the environmental destruction that was caused by the clear-cutting of ancient redwoods culminated after 738 days with an agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree known as Luna and a 3 acre buffer-zone around it.

America celebrates the Fourth of July to recognize our country’s freedom. Originally that meant freedom from the British rule of King George III, but that spirit has evolved to include all of the freedoms contained within the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

From a Global Patriot perspective, however, this day also gives us an opportunity to consider the universal freedoms that everyone on this planet should openly enjoy.

While much progress has been made around the world, the sad reality is that some 234 years after the signing of this landmark declaration, millions of our global citizens still seek many of the basic freedoms listed below.

Freedom from Violence
Freedom from Discrimination
Freedom from Persecution
Freedom from Hunger
Freedom from Poverty
Freedom from Oppression
Freedom from Disease
Freedom from Injustice
Freedom from Pollution
Freedom from Harassment
Freedom from Fear
Freedom from Ignorance
Freedom from Censorship
Freedom from Inequality
Freedom from Immorality

I just finished Delivering Happiness, A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com. Equal parts biography, business story, and corporate philosophy, it often speaks to Tony’s entrepreneurial spirit, which ultimately created one of the most successful companies in history. In the end, however, it’s also an education on how each of us should live our lives.

Tenacity, Learning, Humility

I won’t recount the book, as you should grab a copy and read the story for yourself, but what came through for me were the concepts of tenacity, learning and humility. While Tony walked away from endeavors that simply didn’t work, he understood the potential that Zappos possessed and never gave up on his vision for success.

At every turn he was humble enough to realize three things:

He didn’t have all the answers

He needed a team of dedicated people to succeed

Each day was a learning experience

Valuable lessons we should all incorporate into our daily lives.

Tony’s approach to business is there in the company tag line: Powered by Service. And this ideology extends beyond servicing customers, as employees, vendors and investors should all be served in the process of building a business.

Zappos Core Values

As we grow as a company, it has become more and more important to explicitly define the core values from which we develop our culture, our brand, and our business strategies. These are the ten core values that we live by:

LeapAnywhere is an amazing UK-based organization that lives by the motto, “Have Fun, Do Good”, and connects individuals with cool charitable events. Not satisfied with their past success, they just launched LeapCR, a platform designed to inspire and foster the corporate social responsibility movement.

According to Malcolm Scovil, the founder of LeapCR, “Like a concierge service, we’re dedicated to finding the best local causes for employees to support. To date we’ve partnered with more than 350 charities and non-profits, including Oxfam, WaterAid, Amnesty, Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Foundation & Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi.”

Corporate & Employee Benefits

When companies subscribe to the LeapCR service they gain visibility of key metrics, including the total time contributed by company employees to the local community, participation rates and a list of all charities supported. Employees gain access to a range of charitable events such as river cleanup projects, soup kitchens, aiding the homeless, fundraising events, cultural exhibitions and educational lectures.

“LeapCR is a fantastic new platform that makes it super easy for corporations to mobilize their employee base in the service of causes that are meaningful to the brand and employees. Concepts like LeapCR are so brilliant because they offer management, employees and the community so many benefits.”

LeapCR Platform Highlights

Dozens of fun social, local, charitable events and volunteering activities each week

Full integration with Google maps to show activities based on proximity to company offices

“Leap widget” allows companies to show their employee community activity on their own websites and blogs

Social networking features so colleagues can invite each other and see events other employees are attending

Full reporting functionality for internal and external CSR reporting

Reward and recognition system including badges/trophies/leaderboard to encourage healthy competition

BBC weather forecast integration so employees can see days they should and shouldn’t do outdoor volunteering – a must in rainy London!

Streamlined set up onboarding a new company only takes 5-minutes

Very cost-effective annual subscription

Become an ‘employer of choice’ – 75% of executives interviewed believe that a corporate volunteer program significantly impacts the company’s image as an “employer of choice”. Boost morale and increase productivity from your team.

Inspiring both employees and corporations to support hundreds of worthwhile causes within their local communities can have a profound effect on societies around the world and should be an integral part of our cultural fabric.

Global Patriot is honored to support the efforts of LeapCR and LeapAnywhere!

On June 2, 2010 the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the VII Photo Agency launched “Starved for Attention,” a global multimedia campaign presenting a unique and new perspective of childhood malnutrition, a preventable and treatable condition that nonetheless claims the lives of millions of children each year.

Most of the damage caused by malnutrition occurs in children before they reach their second birthday. This is the critical window of opportunity, when the quality of a child’s diet has a profound, sustained impact on his or her health, and on physical and mental development.

The Grim Statistics on Malnutrition

195 million children less than 5 years of age are affected by malnutrition

20 million of these children suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM)

90% of them are currently living in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia

The World Bank estimates $12 billion a year is needed for nutrition programs

Yet only $350 million was spent on direct nutrition programs in 2007

Understanding the Problem

Malnutrition, specifically undernutrition, is a serious medical condition marked by a deficiency of essential proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals in a diet. It is especially burdensome and dangerous for young, growing children and plays a significant role in mortality because the immune systems of malnourished children are less resistant to common diseases.

In fact, malnutrition contributes to one-third of the eight million deaths of children under five years of age every year. To maintain healthy growth and development, infants and young children need energy furnished by high-quality protein such as milk, eggs, and fish, essential fats and carbohydrates, as well as vitamins and minerals.

The Role of Doctors Without Borders

In 2009, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) medical teams treated 250,000 children suffering from acute malnutrition in 116 programs in 34 countries, primarily with nutrient dense ready-to-use foods, which, while more expensive than foods currently provided by the food aid system, actually work to prevent and cure severe malnutrition—and can be used on a very large scale. Currently, MSF is operating 120 nutrition programs in 36 countries.

At any given time, an estimated 195 million children are affected by malnutrition worldwide. It contributes to at least one-third of the eight million annual deaths of children under five years of age. These deaths are preventable if the nutritional requirements of young children are met.

It would seem that most of us know about Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin empire, which consists of some 360 companies, including Virgin Megastores and Virgin Atlantic Airways. And with a profound appreciation for the power of entrepreneurship, he’s quite active in that arena too.

Virgin Unite, a nonprofit foundation of the Virgin Group, has teamed up with social entrepreneur Taddy Bletcher, the founder of CIDA, South Africa’s first virtually-free institution, to create The Branson School of Entrepreneurship, an intensive 18-month training program for CIDA graduates aiming to launch 30 small businesses each year.

A report by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor in 2007 shows that South Africa’s economic growth is under threat because of a shortage of new entrepreneurs, and Sir Richard aims to change that.

The Branson School of Entrepreneurship works to:

Identify and nurture individuals with entrepreneurial potential

Develop potential entrepreneurs in a practical, relevant and holistic way

Provide students with real-world business skills and mentorship

Promote entrepreneurship as a desirable career option and

Support start-ups and micro-enterprises with skills, mentors, services, networks and finance arrangements

Here students get their business plans ready for launch upon graduation. They have a virtual office, with a desk, computer, telephone, internet access, as well as a meeting room and boardroom facilities. They receive coaching and mentoring and are given exposure to successful local and international entrepreneurs.

“The South African economy is dependent on entrepreneurial activity for creating future economic growth and jobs. But the economic contribution to South Africa’s entrepreneurial sector is below the developing country norm. I believe that increasing entrepreneurship in this country is the golden highway to economic democracy.” Sir Richard Branson

Building Entrepreneurship

The CIDA Seed Fund provides students with promising business plans the much needed capital to start their micro-enterprises. The application process is a strict and disciplined one, where a loan is only granted to students whose plans show clear evidence of financial viability and sustainability.

Thanks to Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100‘s annual fundraiser, where places to join Richard Branson on trips to South Africa have been auctioned to attendees, nearly £500K has been raised for the Seed Fund. Winners to date include Tom Bloxham, Leo Caplan, Mike Parsons, James Richardson, Perry Wilson and Robert Bensoussan.

The School creates opportunities that help student entrepreneurs follow their dreams of owning and managing their own successful business. With the right support and encouragement, this program helps future entrepreneurs make a huge difference to not only the themselves, but also their families, communities and ultimately the whole of South Africa.

Just over a month ago the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in a ball of fire and ultimately sank into the Gulf of Mexico. From that day on an estimated 300,000 gallons of oil per day have been released into the surrounding sea.

Response teams have been working 24/7 to contain and clean up the oil still gushing from the Mississippi Canyon 252 well, yet all efforts to eliminate the flow have so far proved unsuccessful. While many want to simply blame BP, this is a complex issue intersecting the oil industry, the environment, our increasing need for energy, and the lives of those on the Gulf coast who depend upon the ocean for their living.

As a result, there have been loud cries from the environmental community to reduce or eliminate offshore drilling. But is this really practical in light of the world’s demand for energy? Or is this the galvanizing moment that finally pushes us to develop wind and solar power generation, as well as alternative fuels, at breakneck speed?

Where Do We Go From Here?

Make no mistake about the fact that Global Patriot is devoted to protecting the environment, and a big proponent of pursuing renewable energy sources, but today’s reality is that the world is still very thirsty for petroleum, and an increasing amount of this fossil fuel will be coming from deepwater sources unless we experience a radical shift in usage patterns or increase our use of renewable energy resources.

I encourage you to read this article from Wired Magazine – Pumped Up: Chevron Drills Down 30,000 Feet to Tap Oil-Rich Gulf of Mexico. The reserves in the Gulf are huge, and as long as we keep burning the stuff, there will be a need to drill for it.

The New York Times has put together an excellent multimedia page which includes a time lapse image demonstrating the spread of oil in the Gulf. You can also hear the words of those who were on the rig and review a history of oil spills.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Where do your feelings lie? Are you against continued offshore drilling, in favor of increased regulation to prevent such disasters from occurring again, or support a massive push to develop clean energy sources such as wind and solar?

I’m constantly amazed at the efforts put forth by college students when it comes to creating a more sustainable world, and this is a great example of such thinking, as the UCSD campus prepares for a sustainable 5K run.

The University of California San Diego Triathlon Team will play host to the 2nd annual Grove Run, a 100% Sustainable 5k Run and Walk on May 22, 2010. The race will be held at UCSD’s Spanos Track. In 2009 the Grove Run was honored to be one of the most sustainable races ever documented. It was also the first certified sustainable race in Southern California and the first sustainable race hosted by a collegiate triathlon team.

“Physical fitness and ensuring long term environmental sustainability are among the most important issues our community faces today,” said Andrew Radin, Race Director of the 2010 Grove Run. “As athletes we have created a 100% earth friendly run where everything a participant receives will be made from recycled material and organically grown products.”

The Grove Run “all green” race features a sustainable clothing exchange, Greenest Athlete Competition, scenic course through the UCSD eucalyptus grove, renewable energy power, and local organic food for post-race nourishment.

“As triathletes we spend a lot of time swimming, cycling, and running outside, and we’re lucky to be able to enjoy the beautiful weather, terrain, and beaches of San Diego. Unfortunately, we’re aware that global warming, resource exploitation, and short-term thinking are endangering our lifestyle and our communities.

We’re also aware that most organized sporting events are not planned with long-term impacts in mind,” said Sante Kotturi, Team Captain of the UCSD Triathlon Team. “The Grove Run changes how these types of races will be run in the future.”

What people don’t often realize is that UCSD has been focused on sustainability issues for decades, going back to the late 1950s when UCSD researcher Dr. Charles David Keeling developed a tool to measure carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

In our living laboratory, everyone contributes and everyone benefits. Great ideas flourish here. With other individuals, universities, companies, and governments around the world, we amplify the message and mission of sustainability.

Thinking for ourselves, forming our own beliefs, and speaking about them openly, are fundamental human rights. But when the opinions of some have the potential to cause permanent damage to our planet, and threaten the lives of millions, that’s a different matter altogether.

Much intelligent debate has occurred in recent years with regards to the volumes of scientific data which indicate that increased levels of CO2 in the atmosphere, rising air and sea temperatures, and increased acidification of the oceans, could result in unwanted, and potentially devastating changes to our climate.

But some of this discourse has moved beyond rational conversation and has instead targeted science itself and those in the scientific community. In response to these attacks, 225 members of the US National Academy of Sciences have written a letter about climate change, and scientific theory, that should be read by all. The stakes are too high to ignore those who are devoting their lives to saving ours.

225 Scientists (including 11 Nobel laureates) Speak Out

We are deeply disturbed by the recent escalation of political assaults on scientists in general and on climate scientists in particular. All citizens should understand some basic scientific facts. There is always some uncertainty associated with scientific conclusions; science never absolutely proves anything. When someone says that society should wait until scientists are absolutely certain before taking any action, it is the same as saying society should never take action. For a problem as potentially catastrophic as climate change, taking no action poses a dangerous risk for our planet.

Scientific conclusions derive from an understanding of basic laws supported by laboratory experiments, observations of nature, and mathematical and computer modelling. Like all human beings, scientists make mistakes, but the scientific process is designed to find and correct them. This process is inherently adversarial— scientists build reputations and gain recognition not only for supporting conventional wisdom, but even more so for demonstrating that the scientific consensus is wrong and that there is a better explanation. That’s what Galileo, Pasteur, Darwin, and Einstein did. But when some conclusions have been thoroughly and deeply tested, questioned, and examined, they gain the status of “well-established theories” and are often spoken of as “facts.”

For instance, there is compelling scientific evidence that our planet is about 4.5bn years old (the theory of the origin of Earth), that our universe was born from a single event about 14bn years ago (the Big Bang theory), and that today’s organisms evolved from ones living in the past (the theory of evolution). Even as these are overwhelmingly accepted by the scientific community, fame still awaits anyone who could show these theories to be wrong. Climate change now falls into this category: there is compelling, comprehensive, and consistent objective evidence that humans are changing the climate in ways that threaten our societies and the ecosystems on which we depend.

Many recent assaults on climate science and, more disturbingly, on climate scientists by climate change deniers, are typically driven by special interests or dogma, not by an honest effort to provide an alternative theory that credibly satisfies the evidence. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other scientific assessments of climate change, which involve thousands of scientists producing massive and comprehensive reports, have, quite expectedly and normally, made some mistakes. When errors are pointed out, they are corrected.

But there is nothing remotely identified in the recent events that changes the fundamental conclusions about climate change:

The planet is warming due to increased concentrations of heat-trapping gases in our atmosphere. A snowy winter in Washington does not alter this fact.

Most of the increase in the concentration of these gases over the last century is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation.

Natural causes always play a role in changing Earth’s climate, but are now being overwhelmed by human-induced changes.

Warming the planet will cause many other climatic patterns to change at speeds unprecedented in modern times, including increasing rates of sea-level rise and alterations in the hydrologic cycle. Rising concentrations of carbon dioxide are making the oceans more acidic.

The combination of these complex climate changes threatens coastal communities and cities, our food and water supplies, marine and freshwater ecosystems, forests, high mountain environments, and far more.

Much more can be, and has been, said by the world’s scientific societies, national academies, and individuals, but these conclusions should be enough to indicate why scientists are concerned about what future generations will face from business- as-usual practices. We urge our policymakers and the public to move forward immediately to address the causes of climate change, including the unrestrained burning of fossil fuels.

We also call for an end to McCarthy- like threats of criminal prosecution against our colleagues based on innuendo and guilt by association, the harassment of scientists by politicians seeking distractions to avoid taking action, and the outright lies being spread about them. Society has two choices: we can ignore the science and hide our heads in the sand and hope we are lucky, or we can act in the public interest to reduce the threat of global climate change quickly and substantively. The good news is that smart and effective actions are possible. But delay must not be an option.
