The Institut de sciences politiques Louvain-Europe (ISPOLE) based in the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), offers one doctoral fellowship in the context of the research project Qualidem, a five-years research project funded by the European Research Council (StG – 2016_716208 ; Prof V. The Qualidem project offers a qualitative (re)appraisal of citizens’ (dis-)affection towards politics by relying on the core argument of the policy feedback literature: attitudes and behaviours are outcomes of past policy. It aims to explain the evolutions of democratic linkages as being shaped by public policy, and specifically by the turn to neoliberalism and supranationalisation. It intends to systematically analyse the domestic and socially differentiated effects of both of these major macro transformations to citizens’ representations and experiences of politics, as an addition to the existing emphasis on individual determinants and the existing contextual explanations of disengagement and disaffection towards politics. On the theoretical level, this project therefore aims to build bridges between scholars of public policy and students of mass politics. On the empirical level, Qualidem relies on the reanalysis of qualitative data – interviews and focus groups – from a diachronic and comparative perspective focusing on four Western European countries (Belgium, France, Germany and the UK) with the US serving as a counterpoint.

The doctoral fellow will be employed full-time for the duration of 48 months by the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium, ideally starting on October the 1st 2017. By the end of this period S/He will have to submit a PhD dissertation. S/He will be affiliated to ISPOLE [https://uclouvain.be/fr/instituts-recherche/ispole] at UCLouvain. In the context of Qualidem sustained collaboration with Sciences Po Grenoble, this institution will contribute to the international environment of the research team.

The doctoral fellow will be employed full-time for the duration of 48 months. The applicant's net monthly salary will be approximately 1850 euros. Social insurance is included.

Ph.D. Grant Descriptions

The guiding subject matter of SCM is the study of the motion and transformation of ideas, artifacts, and models in space, time and between social fields. New technological, political, judicial, as well as economic frameworks have increasingly trans-local and quite often global meanings due to their translations into local contexts. GS SCM aims to devise concepts that allow for the description of these translation processes, paying particular attention to creative strategies of adaption, transformation and redeployment of travelling epistemic or normative elements. Thus, we aim to understand the reflexive and stimulating potentials in experiences with unfamiliar cultural or social orders.

Consequently, our primary concern goes beyond the migration of people as an economic and political process in order to focus on the challenges and chances that symbolic and normative elements in motion bring about.

From this perspective, we expect interdisciplinary research projects on aspects of creative resistance, adaptation and camouflage that can be identified as forms of translation of travelling ideas and models. The focus could be on historical and social as well as transdisciplinary movements.

Central research topic for the granted projects

Estrangement as a learning process:Experiences – Institutions – Reflecting Strategies

Estrangement is a topic intensively discussed in public within the context of contemporary global migration. It is also prominent in academic discourses such as sociology, ethnology, economics, law, philosophy, literary and educational sciences, among others. SCM has conducted extensive research on the topic and strives to connect its research progress with real world practices and issues, thereby generating a context in which to apply its innovative results.

SCM proposes to analyze estrangement as a contradictory, yet productive learning process in which epistemic, symbolic or politically non-integrated elements encounter a given order. Its scope encompasses constellations which initially appear to be enigmatic and require categorical and social re-organization as well as (self-)reflexive learning processes in order to be integrated into existing orders. Within this frame-work, SCM invites research projects that explore potentially fruitful ways of dealing with strange-/otherness in the sciences, legal systems as well as public discourses, thus disclosing opportunities for social re-organization and integration in existing societal constellations.

Who can apply for a Ph.D. stipend?

Potential Ph.D. students must hold an MA degree (equivalent to the German MA) in social sciences or humanities, or an equivalent degree entitling the holder to take up Ph.D. studies in Germany. In order to fully participate in and take advantage of the GS SCM’s activities, continuous presence of the students in Halle is required. Applications must include the following documents:

What is expected from participating Ph.D. students?

We expect a sustained effort in the Ph.D. work, together with
a willingness to actively take part in the GS SCM schooling programme. This involves giving presentations and papers at the trans-disciplinary seminars, workshops, as well as on other occasions
a general interest in methodological and epistemological enquiries.
Successful completion of the degree (Ph.D.) takes place according to the guidelines and regulations of the corresponding faculty.

Giessen University’s International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), cofunded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year, structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers doctoral researchers optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.

The GCSC invites applications for one of the 13 PhD scholarships available, which are funded by the Excellence Initiative as well as Justus Liebig University Giessen.

The PhD scholarship period starts on October 1, 2016 and includes a monthly stipend of approximately €1,468 (plus family allowances when applicable). Scholarships are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of one year. The GCSC supports young researchers with families: appointees with children under the age of twelve are eligible for renewals of up to four years.

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one Research Area and one other GCSC/GGK research group. Doctoral members of the GCSC must register as PhD students at the Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at the JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €300 per semester. All scholarship holders are expected to assume residency in or near Giessen.

The GCSC expects scholarship holders to:

Pursue a dissertation project that contributes to the GCSC’s research profile* and can be supervised at the Justus Liebig University,
Actively participate in one of the GCSC’s research areas* by initiating, coordinating and documenting collaborative research projects, such as conferences or publications,
Participate in the GCSC’s curriculum.

The GCSC offers a research-intensive environment and comprehensive, multi-tier supervision at all stages of a dissertation project via, e.g. interdisciplinary research colloquia and professional support in preparing academic papers and conferences. The GCSC Teaching Centre offers systematic qualification in higher education teaching; opportunities to teach at the BA level are available.

Eligibility: We invite applications from students who graduated with excellent marks (from twoyear research-track master’s programmes in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects* or the arts/humanities, cultural studies or social sciences no longer than two years ago as well as from students who expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours M.A. degree (or the equivalent).

The GCSC encourages applications which make a significant contribution to the study of culture in various historical contexts, including contemporary phenomena. An international research perspective, i.e. international study experience, is an advantage.

Economic Sociology and Labour Studies

Sociology and Methodology of Social Research

University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) Fellowship Program

1. Introduction

The University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) is a place of intellectual innovation, welcoming excellent researchers from all countries and disciplinary backgrounds in residence, to conduct independent research within a scientific community of excellence. Each year, the Institute awards between ten and twenty Fellowships for a period of between three months and two years to enable the pursuit of original, innovative research projects aiming at exploring novel questions with new approaches and methods.

In this year’s call for proposals, USIAS welcomes applications from both promising young scholars and excellent advanced researchers from outside of Strasbourg, wishing to carry out research in collaboration with researchers in Strasbourg and/or using a Strasbourg facility. In addition, excellent researchers already in Strasbourg wishing to work on highly original research ideas, or to apply their knowledge and skills to new domains outside of their current field of work, are welcome to apply, especially when jointly with an external collaborator. The grantees will become USIAS fellows for the period of their project.

2. Fellowships

USIAS will provide Fellows with the working conditions and the academic environment necessary for the successful completion of their project, including the operating costs for research, seminars, travel and publications, partial dispensation of teaching and administrative obligations, and space and administrative support. Fellows from outside of Strasbourg are expected to reside in Strasbourg during the period of their fellowship; the costs of their stay will be covered by USIAS (e.g. accommodation, travel). Differences between the cost of living in France and the cost of living in the fellow’s home country will be taken into account, and relevant other elements of individual cases will be taken into consideration.

3. Criteria

Applications should present an original, high quality research proposal, which is remarkable in terms of ambition, topic, methodology or (interdisciplinary) perspective, and which will result in research that has the potential to make a step-change (rather than merely incremental) contribution to a certain (emerging) field of research. The research proposal may represent a project that is a clear change of direction of the applicant’s research, requiring an investment in time and effort that cannot be undertaken in a normal academic position with administrative and teaching obligations. Furthermore, the call is open to original research proposals that require Strasbourg-specific resources (e.g. library or art collections, specialised technical equipment).

4. Eligibility

Proposals should be written in English to enable international review, using the specific template provided by USIAS (link below), respecting headings, structure and limit of space and providing the requested information in the order of listing. The budget should provide a preliminary estimate of the costs involved; a more detailed and precise budget will be determined in a later phase in case of selection of the proposal.

Background
The Department of Sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) seeks to fill four PhD positions for a research project funded by an Advanced Investigator Grant of the European Research Council to Professor Pearl Dykstra. The aim of the research project (entitled “Families In Context”) is to unravel the ways in which policy, economic, and cultural contexts structure generational interdependencies in families. There are four sub-projects. The first, Transcending space, with its specific focus on transnational families, examines how different kinds of intergenerational exchanges (emotional, practical, financial) are affected by geographic proximity versus distance. The second, Drivers of family behaviour, examines whether family members help each other for different reasons, depending on the country in which they live. The third, Back-up functions, investigates the necessity of family members to provide for the young and the old, given limited public safety nets and crisis-driven reforms. The fourth, Rethinking men in families, asks what insights can be gained from a more balanced treatment of men and women across topics (such as stratification, parenting, grandparenting and childlessness) in the research literature on families.

Job description
The candidates will perform theoretically-informed quantitative analyses, present the results at conferences, and write a dissertation based on a set of research articles, publishable in international refereed journals. They will contribute to the preparation and documentation of datasets to be used in the “Families In Context” project. Teaching (about 0.1 fte) in the Department of Sociology is also part of candidates’ tasks.

Qualifications
The PhD candidates should:

hold a Research Master degree in sociology, demography or have equivalent qualifications; candidates who are due to graduate in the fall of 2013 are also welcome to apply.

Conditions of employment
The starting date for the positions is September 1, 2013. The initial contract will run for a term of 1.5 years, which – depending on performance – will be extended with a second term of 2.5 years. The conditions of employment correspond with the collective agreement of Dutch universities (CAO NU). From September on the Erasmus University offers a salary of € 2.083,- gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2.664,- gross per month in the final year in accordance with the Promovendus scale of CAO NU (salary based on a fulltime occupation). A psychological assessment will be part of the selection procedure.
The EUR has attractive employment conditions, which include a holiday allowance of 8.0%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 41 annual vacation days in case of a full workweek. Substantial tax benefits apply to non-Dutch citizens, conditional on permission granted by the Dutch Tax Office. Background

Established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong's institutions.

Eligibility

Those who are seeking admission as new full time PhD students in Hong Kong institutions funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC), irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience, and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply. Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of academic performance, research ability / potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.

The Fellowship

The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and a conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for each awardee for a period of three years. About 135 PhD Fellowships will be awarded each academic year¹. For awardees who need more than three years to complete the PhD degree, additional support may be provided by the chosen institutions. Selection Panels

Starting in November 2012, the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies (GPTS) will grant eight doctoral scholarships to European and Asian students.

Application Requirements

Applicants must hold an M.A. or equivalent in a discipline of the humanities or social sciences with an above-average grade (at least 1.7, B+, 2+, "magna cum laude", or equivalent).

The degree has to reflect at least five years of study at university level. Applicants who plan to graduate in 2012 must provide a university transcript that clearly indicates the progress to degree.

Documents should be submitted in English, German, French or Italian. Documents in other languages should be submitted as certified translations into English or German.

The application process consists of three parts.

1. Applicants have to register and log into the Online Application System of the GPTS. Further guidelines will be available after login. Through the system applicants are required to provide

The proposed doctoral project must have clear connections to the general research framework of the Cluster. Suitable supervisors may be found amongst the five Professorships and senior researchers involved in the projects of the Cluster.

2. After an initial evaluation and selection, applicants will be asked to contact suitable supervisors at the Clluster to discuss their proposed projects.

3. Following a positive decision on the second funding period in June, the most promising applicants would be invited to present their projects to the selection committee in Heidelberg. Subsequently the scholarship holders would be selected.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Stanford University (Stanford) are pleased to announce that the deadline for applications for the 2012-2013 Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Distinguished Fellowship on Southeast Asia has been extended to 25th February 2012. Interested individuals with backgrounds or positions in the social sciences or humanities are encouraged to apply. Candidates may be of any nationality or seniority.

One or two candidates may be awarded fellowships. A successful candidate will spend up to six months between 1st August 2012 and 30th June 2013, divided between residences at NUS and at Stanford, writing and conducting research on, or related to, contemporary Southeast Asia. Fellows will also have opportunities to speak and take part in seminars and workshops organized by relevant campus units. In determining the overall length of the fellowship and the sequencing and lengths of the stays at each campus, the preferences of the fellow concerned will be taken into account.

Each fellowship will cover one roundtrip economy-class airfare from the fellow’s country of residence to NUS (or Stanford), on to Stanford (or NUS), and back to the fellow's country of residence; flight-related ground transportation; and a stipend of US$ 7500 per month during the fellowship period.

(1) a project statement (not exceeding three pages) that addresses the candidate’s research project’s central analytic question(s), explains its intellectual contribution to scholarship on Southeast Asia, and describes the writing and research envisaged during the fellowship. The International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE), which is conducted jointly by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies and the University of Cologne, invites suitable candidates to apply for its doctoral program.

The BIGSSS Ph.D. Program:

The Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applications to its Ph.D. program. The program will commence on September 1st, 2012.

Successful applicants for the Ph.D. and Post-doc fellowships will pursue a topic in one of BIGSSS' five Thematic Fields.

All fellows are expected to choose Bremen as their place of residence.

Financial Support:

BIGSSS offers 15 Ph.D. stipends of 1250 Euros/month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year. To support its Ph.D. fellows in achieving early scientific independence, it also provides funds for conducting, presenting and publishing research. There is no separate funding application, because all admitted applicants receive a stipend.

Eligibility and Conditions

Applicants must be at the dissertation writing stage of their PhD with a research proposal accepted by the candidate's university. Language proficiency in English is essential. Applicants from developing countries and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

UNU-IAS Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 months. The starting date of the Ph.D. Fellowship Programme is 1 September. Successful applicants are required to be in Yokohama by this date. Residency in Yokohama for the full duration of the fellowship is required.

Fellows are provided with their own desk in a dedicated study room in the Institute, administrative support and desktop computing. Fellows have access to the UNU Library in Tokyo which includes an excellent collection of UN documents. They also have access via the UNU Library to various Japanese university libraries and computer databases. A limited range of other, more specialised computer hardware and software may also be available.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY260,000 from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted (see below). A one-time-only settle-in-allowance of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each Fellow at the beginning of the programme for relocation, adjustment expenses, ground transportation and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides Fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport. Settle-in-allowance and air tickets are, however, not provided for Fellows already residing in Japan before the commencement of the fellowship.

Fellows carry out their research in Yokohama under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and/or affiliated UNU-IAS network scholars. Fellows will spend about half of their working hours on their dissertation and the remaining half assisting the Institute’s projects and activities.

Two doctoral research positions in the Division of Anthropology of Law and Conflict Studies

Project Description
	These doctoral positions are granted in the context of the interdisciplinary programme of the new 'Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation, Punishment (IMPRS-REMEP)'. The research program aims to attract researchers educated in social anthropology (in particular, legal anthropology and conflict studies). The doctoral students will carry out their studies mainly in Halle/Saale. They will participate in the training programme offered by the IMPRS-REMEP and can make use of the facilities and infrastructure of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. Working language of the training programme and the dissertation is English. According to local university regulations, German language skills may be required in exceptional cases. The scientific supervision of the doctoral students will be carried out by the Max Planck Institute and the University of Freiburg. Cross-disciplinary dissertation projects may be co-supervised by a member of the academic staff from a partner institute.

	Job description
	Dissertation Topics The research agenda has its focus on the fundamental question common to the disciplines of social sciences and humanities regarding how peace and social order are negotiated, constructed, maintained and re-gained. In particular, in the context of conflict and post-conflict societies, traditional approaches to reconciliation and mediation are being adopted, amending, and - partially - replacing, well-established systems of punishment mainly based on concepts of retaliation. Research at the Max Planck Institute in Halle/Saale should fall within the fields of legal anthropology and conflict studies in the broadest sense of these terms. The focus of analysis should be conflict and conflict settlement procedures (retaliation, mediation, punishment) in plural legal contexts and should also include strategies for inclusion and exclusion in conflict situations. Of special interest are configurations of various juridical repertoires, such as local or customary law, state law, religious law, or transnational norms for conflict management, including actors’ abilities to manoeuvre within or among these repertoires (e.g. forum shopping). Of equal importance are issues pertaining to the social construction of conflict parties and their identity patterns. This research programme encompasses dispute management within or between various groups or institutions at various levels of social organisation: in semi-autonomous social fields such as kinship groups and local groups; within or between ethnic or religious communities, both within or across national borders; between states; or in transnational settings. Potential research topics range from conflict resolution in acephalous societies to conflict management procedures in (post) conflict societies (retaliation, punishment, compensation, reconciliation), for example, in the form of transitional or restorative justice or reconciliation processes. The interaction of global, local and translocal processes may thus acquire special analytical importance. Applicants are expected to develop their research questions independently, and to specify those in their proposal. Proposals with a comparative perspective and/or an inter-disciplinary approach will be considered with priority. It is expected that anthropological projects include a field research of approximately one year.

	Requirements
	Application requirements 1. Completion of a university degree in social anthropology at a German university or completion at an equivalent university abroad. 2. Alternatively to (1), completion of regular university studies in a social sciences’ discipline as major subject, a second major subject, or two additional minor subjects, with an overall duration of at least 4 years at a German university, or completion of an equivalent programme at an equivalent university abroad. Master degree or equivalent degree from abroad. In exceptional cases with a background in sociology of law and interest in social anthropology empirical research, completion of a law degree at a German university or completion at an equivalent university abroad. First or Second German State Law Exam with a minimum overall grade of "vollbefriedigend" (according to the examination regulations "JAPrO" of the State of Baden-Württemberg), or an equivalent degree with an equiva¬lent grade ("with distinction") from abroad. 3. Submission of a substantive proposal for a dissertation topic linked to the research agenda of the IMPRS-REMEP. 4. Solid proficiency in the English language. In addition, students should have at least some basic knowledge of German language and demonstrate willingness to improve it. The IMPRS-REMEP seeks to reach a composition of at least 50 percent foreign doctoral students. Thus, foreign candidates with a foreign degree are explicitly encouraged to apply. Recognition of equivalence of foreign degrees is to be determined by the doctoral committee of the Faculty of Philosophy I of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, in accordance with the criteria laid out by the Central Office for Foreign Education at the Secretariat of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs ("Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen im Sekretariat der Ständigen Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder").

	Payment
	Financial support is granted in accordance with the guidelines of the Max Planck Society in the form of a doctoral contract or bursary. The financial support regarding the doctoral contract corresponds with public service organizations (up to 50 per cent of the payment group 13 degree 1 of the General Framework Agreement on Public Services, "Tarifvertrag Öffentlicher Dienst", TVöD). Financial support will be granted for a period of two years, with a possibility of two subsequent extensions, each for a duration of six months.

Substantive/meaningful proposal for a research topic (5 pages), preferably in English, structured into a) relevance of the proposed topic in the context of the overall research agenda of the IMPRS-REMEP, b) state of preparation, c) aim of the project, d) probable links to other disciplines, e) methodology, f) proposed timeline, g) intended time of completion of the dissertation. It is intended that doctoral students, when participating in the research programme in a regular manner, will be able to complete the programme within a three years period (two plus twice a half a year). 6. Two letters of recommendation from two senior scientists (to be written in English or German). These letters should include information as to previous research experience, and vouch for the ability of the applicant to undertake doctoral studies at the Research School. 7. Applicants who do not speak English as their native language and who are unable of demonstrating good proficiency in English language in any other way must prove their skills through language examination certificates. In particular, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with at least 6.0 bands or TOEFEL (at least 560 points, computer: 220 points) are recognized. 8. Applicants who do not speak German as their native language should be capable to demonstrate basic knowledge of German, e.g., through a certificate German language ("Zertifikat Deutsch", ZD). Proficiency in German language is not a formal precondition for application. However, subject to university regulations, German may be mandatory for the oral doctoral exam or defense, or for parts of it, in individual cases. If necessary, access to external language courses can be arranged. Presentation of officially authenticated copies of the original certificates etc., with regards to Nos. 3 and 4 above, is only necessary once a decision has been made to admission.

	The Max Planck Society and the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg endeavour, wherever possible, to employ disabled persons and applications from such persons are expressly called for. Giessen University's International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.

From 01st October 2011, the GCSC offers

Up to 9 PhD scholarships and 1 postdoctoral scholarship.

PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1.100 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. The postdoctoral scholarship, with a monthly stipend of about €1.500, is limited to two years. All scholarships start on 01st October, 2011. Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. PhD scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. All scholarship holders are expected to take up residency in or near Giessen.

Eligibility

We invite applications contributing to the study of culture in various historical contexts as well as those analyzing contemporary phenomena The GCSC encourages applications from graduate students who have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours M.A.-degree (or equivalent) in one of the GCSC’s academic subjects or in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences. Candidates applying for a post-doctoral scholarship should hold a PhD in the arts/humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences, have an excellent academic record, and pursue a research project relevant to the GCSC’s research areas. Fluency in either English or German is required.

The main selection criteria are the candidates’ academic qualification, the academic quality of the research proposal and the suitability of the project for the GCSC’s research programme. Short-listed candidates will be invited to a 30-minute interview; telephone interviews can be arranged for candidates from overseas.
