As part of his US speaking tour last month, global tolerance’s founder Simon Cohen addressed Georgetown University’s Berkley Center on the subject of the ‘other 9/11’. Parts of the talk are now available on YouTube.

In the presentation, Simon draws out the example of the ‘other 9/11’ September 11, 1906, when Gandhi first deployed his method of nonviolent resistance.

By comparing both anniversaries and their legacies he explores the unparalleled power of the media to influence perceptions about faith in society, for better or worse.

Hot off the heels of his US speaking tour, global tolerance’s founder Simon Cohen now takes his message of media ethics to the UN. Simon will be speaking at the Second Global Forum on the Power of Peace, organized by UNESCO and hosted by the Government of Thailand.

Simon will address the theme “Conflict management through Media and ICTs: New Opportunities for Collaboration” at the event taking place from 28-30 October 2009 in Bangkok.

Last month Simon visited the US for a series of speaking engagements coinciding with the 9/11 anniversary. They included a speech at Georgetown University, highlighting a lesser-known 9/11- the day in 1906 when Gandhi began his non-violent movement.

Simon’s world tour has already included Japuir, India and workshop facilitation at The World Economic Forum in Jordan and the Caux conference in Switzerland. Since launching the first national conference on religion and the media in the UK, Simon has successfully built a public profile as a speaker and commentator on media and ethics with a special emphasis on communicating faith and intercultural issues.
