global tolerance’s Faithbook on Facebook was again this week in the global media spotlight, featured in South Africa’s leading newspaper. ‘Boom Time for God’ looks at the economy’s downturn on rekindling faith in society, and quotes Faithbook on Facebook several times.

‘Indications are that the faithful at least are praying more. A survey conducted on Faithbook, an interfaith Facebook page dedicated to religious tolerance, revealed that believers of whatever religion have found themselves increasingly concerned with finances in their prayers.’

Faithbook has grown to be such a global phonemomen, and is the premier place on the web to openly discuss heartfelt issues around faith and inter faith issues. Nearly 2000 fans have joined Faithbook, and global tolerance has ambitious plans for the page in 2009. Watch this space!

An alleged plot to assassinate President Obama at the UN Alliance of Civilizations (check out CBS news), meant his participation was dramatically and inevitably changed at the last minute. Apparently, President Obama still dined with the Turkish PM and a handful of AoC delegates at a changed location, due to security concerns.

With the President safe, well and in Iraq, it is time to reflect on the second and final day of the AoC. The morning started with a breakfast session on ‘Can new media bridge cultural divides?’ Around the table were powerhouses of the new media world. I smugly tweeted my arrival, and with the coffee piping and the pastries, erm, puffing, the ingredients for a productive session were all there. Some fantastic initiatives were presented: from distance learning in war torn countries, to MTV content with indigenous exchange programmes. I spoke about the need to set the tone of debate on social media to help build and not burn cultural bridges, citing global tolerance’s Faithbook on Facebook as an example. I also emphasised the importance of sharing innovative new media initiatives with the media, for a single cultural program may reach hundreds or thousands of people, but inspirational media coverage about that program has the capacity to reach millions, and bridge cultural divides at the same time.

With official proceedings due to finish at 3pm, I decided to sacrifice the morning plenary for a bout of serious networking. I have never been in such a productive and high-powered networking environment. This, I felt, was what the AoC was all about. I remember a Buddhist monk once putting his hand in the air and asking me how many fingers I saw. Feeling clever, I responded ‘four fingers and a thumb.’ Never try and be clever with a Buddhist monk, Simon. He said ‘nine - don’t forget the gaps between the fingers.’ And it was the gaps between, and sometimes during, the AoC sessions that should not be forgotten. It was, I realised, where much of the substantive work was done.

With a pocket full of business cards, I ran to a pre-arranged lunch with the fine people at The Coexist Foundation and The Gallup Organization.

The official Forum proceedings closed, but the business was by no means over. We were treated to a stunning boat trip along the Bosphorous, sandwiched between two continents, and flanked by three police boats. Vigorous networking and photo snapping ensued, until we arrived back at the Palace to go our separate ways. For we had not reached our destination: the AoC marks a milestone along a journey - in my case a journey towards global tolerance or, put another way, an alliance of civilizations.
