YTB Agents File Lawsuit Against YTB

Brown also charges the company with unfair business practices and false advertising practices including deceptive claims that members can earn millions of dollars with the company, operating without filing legally mandated documents with the attorney general and the Department of Corporations and selling an illegal travel discount program.

“According to company records, there were over 200,000 members in 2007 who typically pay more than $1,000 per year—$449.95 to set up an 'online travel agency' with a monthly fee of $49.95. In 2007, only 38 percent of the company’s members made any travel commissions. For the minority of members who made any travel commission in 2007, the median income was $39—less than one month’s cost to keep the website. There are at least 139,000 of the company’s travel websites, all virtually identical, on the Internet.”

You can get significant discounts, amounting up to 70% of published rates. There are some hotels and resorts that will pass along industry discounts during their slow times. If you have given business to a particular hotel or resort, you might expect they would accommodate your request. Your host agency will typically provide these discounts proactively to their members.

During slow periods, some cruise lines will offer travel agent's rates to fill cabins. You generally will have to prove you are in the business with either an ARC, IATA or CLIA number or some other criteria. I have also seen travel agents going on free cruises (well they pay port charges and taxes). I actually just got off a 5 day cruise with an upgraded balcony cabin for $125 bucks total for two people. So yes, there ARE free cruises for travel agents.

The travel industry conventions and trade shows are certainly bargains that allow one to travel substantial savings and many of the industry associations offer travel agent seminars and fam trips on ships and resorts all over the world.

Aft - The rear of the ship
Amid Ship - The central part of the ship between the bow and stern.
Beam - The width of the ship at its widest part.
Bow - The front part, or forward part of the ship.
Bridge - Where the ship is steered from.
Bulkhead - Partition walls that separate the parts of a ship.
Crow’s Nest - A platform high on the mast of a ship (or boat).
Cabin - Sleeping quarters.
Disembark - To go ashore, get off the ship.
Dock - Structure where ship attaches itself by ties in port.
Embark - To go aboard ship.
Fore - Toward the bow of the vessel.
Galley - A ship’s kitchen.
GRT - Gross Registered Tonnage – used to designate the size of a ship.
Inside - Refers to a cabin with all interior bulkheads, no windows or portholes.
Knot - A unit of speed, meaning a nautical mile per hour.
MS - Abbreviation for Motor Ship.
Outside - Refers to a cabin with a window or porthole.
Port - Left side of the ship.
Porthole - A window in the ship’s hull.
Port Taxes - Taxes specific to the ports on an itinerary of a cruise, normally paid prior to sailing.
Purser - A ship’s officer who is the business manager on a voyage; the banker.
Starboard - Right side of the ship.
Stern - The aft or rear of the ship.
