Almost half of Singaporeans are willing to change jobs to receive more vacation time. The data comes from a survey conducted by Fiji Airways and Tourism Fiji.

A slightly smaller number say they would switch industries entirely to receive more vacation time, and 32 per cent say they would have smaller families if it meant more holiday travel over the years. Respondents identified stress as the biggest impediment to their happiness, particularly job-related stress, and women feel overall unhappier than men.

“With demanding workplace environments with long work hours, Singaporeans face a lot of pressure, overwhelmed with multiple sources of stress on a daily basis. Consistently high levels of stress rob people of feelings of happiness and well-being,” said Christopher Cheok, author, Achieving Happiness in Singapore.

Fiji Airways is offering Singaporeans special airfare deals to get away from their worries, with economy-class airfare starting at $855, for travel before March 31.

“With its laid-back vibe and stunning natural beauty, Fiji is the ultimate contrast to the city hustle and bustle of Singapore. Fijians are naturally happy and content, and this shows through their authentic warmth and their always positive disposition. It’s hard not to feel relaxed and drawn into the innate happiness of Fiji and its people,” said Andre Viljoen, managing director and CEO, Fiji Airways.

The route is Air Canada’s first direct service to China from Montréal. Tickets are available for purchase now.

“China is Canada’s second-largest trading partner and Air Canada has made a significant investment of more than $1 billion in aircraft and equipment allocated specifically to serve the Chinese market from our Canadian hubs. We will be the first and only Canadian carrier to operate daily non-stop trans-Pacific service between Montréal and the Asia Pacific region, and with an elapsed time of 14.5 hours, it will be the longest flight ever operated by any carrier from Montréal-Trudeau airport. Together with our Star Alliance partners, Air China and Shenzhen Airlines, and partner Juneyao Airlines, a Shanghai-based airline operating to more than 30 destinations in China, we will offer the growing number of travellers between Montréal and China even more convenient travel options to Chinese destinations,” said Calin Rovinescu, president and CEO, Air Canada.

Flights depart Montréal at 13:30, arriving in China at 16:40 one day later. Return flights depart China at 18:15, arriving in Canada at 18:40 the same day. The schedule varies over the spring months but begins a more permanent schedule March 25, with flight times only differing by as much as one hour. A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner services the route with three cabins, 20 business-class seats, 21 premium-economy seats and 210 economy-class seats.

Marriott debuts its new hospitality programme, Li Yu, created specifically for Chinese travellers. The collection of Chinese-language services makes international travel easier and more convenient. Coinciding with Golden Week travel, it is now available at the most popular destinations for the Chinese travel market, including 41 Marriott properties in Asia Pacific, the Americas, the Middle East and Europe.

The programme’s major feature allows travellers to connect to a concierge service assistant at any time using WeChat on their mobile devices. Regardless of what kind of assistance is needed, help is available wherever a traveller may be, and always in Chinese.

“China is the world’s largest outbound travel market and the new generation of Chinese travellers has a taste for exploration. Our study conducted with Hurun Research Institute shows 42 per cent of young luxury travellers want personalized experiences and 61 per cent of them prefer electronic guest services. That is why we have introduced the Li Yu hospitality programme, just in time for Golden Week. With Li Yu, Chinese members can experience the thrill of travel while enjoying Chinese-language guest service, ease of digitized communications, familiar food and other relaxing comforts of home,” said Anka Twum-Baah, vice president, customer loyalty and content, Asia Pacific.

Other services within the programme include Mandarin-speaking hotel associates; hotel and destination guides written in Chinese; complimentary, in-room Chinese tea and teaware; Chinese-catered dining; Chinese newspapers and television programming; customized welcome gifts; and more.

A full list of participating properties is found online and guests enjoy all Marriott Rewards amenities when using the Li Yu hospitality programme.

I start to decompress during our meander down Virginia’s pastoral Blue Ridge Parkway to the Meadows of Dan exit. Soon we’re through Primland Resort’s gated north entrance, up the mountain and welcomed at the lodge entrance.

We always look forward to revisiting Primland, a unique combination of sportsman’s club, golf retreat, honeymoon haven, luxury, eco-sensitive resort and family getaway. In this private, 12,000-acre enclave, there’s something for everyone. Primland’s founder, the late Didier Primat, envisioned an eco-conscious retreat with world-class amenities, and his family continues to uphold his legacy.

Some guests choose to stay in one of the Mountain Homes in the woods, while others opt for Fairway Cottages on the 10th hole. Also available are the Treehouses; the new Pinnacle Cottage overlooking the gorge; and The Lodge, the elegant 27-room centerpiece of the resort.

We touch down briefly in our Lodge room, a lovely suite of cedar and stone with every possible amenity, and then grab a quick burger in the 19th Pub before our tee time. Guests can choose from more than 50 activities at the resort, ranging from fishing, shooting and archery to orienteering and disc golf; exploring 90 miles of trails via bike, ATV or horse; and stargazing with the resident astronomer in the high-tech observatory.

The activity list even includes tree climbing (my specialty as a youngster), but these days my preference is golf on the spectacular Donald Steel-designed Highland Course. It’s ranked No. 1 in Virginia by Golf Digest, and almost every hole features views of valleys and mountain ranges to the east and west.

After golf, I soak in the hot tub and swim a few laps in the indoor pool before putting myself in the hands of Brenda, a divinely expert massage therapist in the Native American-themed Spa.

The treatment leaves me so relaxed I’m not sure I’m good company at dinner, but every course prepared by Cordon Bleu-trained chef Ryan DeRieux is a conversation piece as well as a treat for the palate. We linger until we’re alerted the heavens are putting on a show in the Observatory.

Primland is blissfully isolated, but the Winston-Salem (INT) and Charlotte (CLT) airports are just 58 and 120 miles away. The resort can pick you up for the scenic journey or you can opt for a road trip from home, as we did.

InterContinental Hotels Group pairs with Hotel Properties Limited to open an 83-guestroom property in the Maldives. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort is slated to open on the southern point of Raa Atoll, giving guests direct seaplane access to the airport. An open date is expected at a later time.

The property’s design features multiple food and beverage options, a kids’ club, club lounge, pool, spa and a sea sports center.

“Tourism in the Maldives has been a major contributor to its economy, contributing more than 40 percent of the country’s GDP last year, and sentiments are positive as the country continues to be one of the world’s most highly sought-after travel destinations. It is a great time to be bringing our InterContinental brand into the Maldives,” said Jan Smits, CEO, Asia, Middle East and Africa, IHG. “In growing our brands’ presence it is always important we look for the right partner and we are delighted to be working with HPL to bring our luxury brand, InterContinental, into the country.”

“As part of our growth strategy we continuously seek the right opportunity to expand our portfolio across the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean region. We see huge potential to grow our resorts business in the Maldives and Maamunagau Island is the perfect setting to develop a luxury InterContinental resort. We’ve been working with IHG for almost seven years and they have been excellent partners. We look forward to bringing another great resort to life, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, in partnership with IHG,” said Stephen Lau, chairman, Hotel Properties Limited.

Currently, IHG operates the Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, but the upcoming property is the first to open in the destination under the InterContinental brand.
