According to Bloom Pakistan “ Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan said the project aims to improve access to important Sikh religious and historical sites while creating investment opportunities.

Speaking at a National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting, Aleem Khan said the expressway would be developed to international standards. He highlighted its potential religious, historical and economic importance, but no investment commitments or construction timeline were announced.

The meeting also reviewed plans for the proposed Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhand-Chilas highway. The minister directed the NHA to prepare a feasibility study for developing the 123-kilometre Mansehra-Naran section as a model road project.

He said the proposed three-lane road could promote tourism and improve road connectivity with China.

Aleem Khan also directed officials to complete construction work on the Multan-Muzaffargarh-Mianwali highway within two months. He stressed the need to speed up other ongoing road projects without compromising safety standards.

The meeting approved safety barriers for the expansion of the Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad section of the M-4 motorway.

The minister further instructed the NHA to include rest areas and washrooms on both sides of new highways. He also made green belts and landscaping a priority to improve road safety and provide more comfortable facilities for travellers.

According to Pukaar News "Warrant Officer Balbir Singh Flora received the honor at the Chief of the Air Staff’s Commendation Awards ceremony at RAF College Cranwell, Lincolnshire.

The ceremony, presented by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth, recognized 17 recipients and included a flypast and a performance by the RAF band. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1959, Mr Flora moved to the UK with his family. He joined the RAF aged 17 and is now its most senior Sikh serving in a non-commissioned rank. He also works with the RAF Air Cadets, supporting young people involved with the organization. “It is a great honor to receive this recognition after 45 years of service,” he said. “I am proud to have served in the Royal Air Force.”

Mr Flora said he hoped his career would encourage people from Sikh and Punjabi communities to consider joining the RAF. His family and friends attended the ceremony, and he thanked them, alongside his colleagues, for their support throughout his career. The award recognizes Mr Flora’s decades of service and marks a milestone for Punjabi Sikhs in the RAF. His work with the Air Cadets also gives him the opportunity to support and inspire younger generations.

Punjab-Origin Angad Singh Dhillon Named Canada’s New Ambassador to UAE

According to Khalsa Vox “ Canada has named Punjab-origin diplomat Angad Singh Dhillon as its next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Arab Emirates, placing a senior official with experience in international engagement and investment diplomacy at the helm of one of Ottawa’s increasingly important relationships in the Gulf.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced the appointment on September 25. Dhillon will replace Radha Krishna Panday as Canada’s ambassador to the UAE.

The appointment was announced as part of a wider set of diplomatic changes. Canada has also named Carmen Sorger as its new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cuba, succeeding Marianick Tremblay.

Dhillon, whose family traces its roots to Ghungrana village in Punjab, has most recently served as Director of Operations and Stakeholder Relations in the Office of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In that position, Dhillon was involved in the Canadian government’s efforts to renew diplomatic engagement with major bilateral partners, including India and China. According to biographical information released by the Canadian government, he was among the advisers who worked on restoring senior-level channels of communication and cooperation with key countries.

His responsibilities have also extended to investment promotion. Dhillon led stakeholder coordination aimed at securing investment commitments into Canada and was involved in the development and planning of the country’s inaugural national Investment Summit.

Before joining Carney’s office in his recent role, Dhillon served as Chief of Staff to two federal Cabinet ministers, working across the small business and transport portfolios.

His experience in government has included supporting Canadian participation and engagement at several major international forums, among them the G7 and G20, the United Nations General Assembly, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the International Transport Forum and the Conference of the Parties.

Dhillon’s Punjab connection is also expected to draw interest within the large Punjabi and Indian-origin diaspora in Canada and overseas.

His posting comes as Ottawa and Abu Dhabi seek to expand a bilateral relationship increasingly focused on trade, investment and economic cooperation.

Days before the appointment was announced, Anand held discussions with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on September 21. The talks covered the growing momentum in Canada-UAE relations and prospects for expanding commercial and investment ties.

The two countries are also pursuing negotiations towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which is intended to provide a broader framework for strengthening economic engagement.

As ambassador, Dhillon will now serve as Canada’s senior diplomatic representative in the UAE at a time when Ottawa is seeking to deepen its political and economic engagement with the Gulf state.

According to Times of India “ Sikhs in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) have initiated a move to get the KPK Sikh Anand Karaj Bill, 2026, passed by the provincial assembly, seeking legal recognition and registration of Sikh marriages in the province.

The move comes even as KPK’s Sikh population has dwindled over the years, with many members of the community migrating to Pakistan’s Punjab province amid targeted attacks and violence in which several Sikhs have been killed.

KPK assembly member and vice-chairperson of the parliamentary caucus for minority affairs Babaji Gorpal Singh said in an online post that the proposed legislation had entered an important phase and would provide for registration and legal recognition of Sikh marriages and protection of associated family rights.

After scrutiny by the law department, the bill will be placed before the cabinet committee on legislation and subsequently the provincial cabinet before being tabled in the KPK Assembly, he said.

According to Gorpal, registration of an Anand Karaj under the proposed law would be recognised for legal and civil purposes, providing a legal basis for family rights relating to inheritance, alimony, guardianship, family registration and identity documents.
The proposed legislation, he said, would address a long-standing demand of the Sikh community for an effective legal and administrative mechanism governing marriage registration and related matrimonial matters.

Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly had passed the Punjab Sikhs Anand Karaj Marriages Act in 2018.

Intelligence sources monitoring the development said the timing of the KPK initiative, ahead of Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary celebrations at Nankana Sahib in November, could be aimed at drawing the attention of the international Sikh community. The celebrations are expected to attract Sikh devotees from across the world.

The sources linked the initiative to Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president and Punjab minority affairs minister Ramesh Arora, who had earlier announced an initiative concerning gurdwaras across Pakistan.

According to Spokesman “ Whatever God gives his people, the Sikhs return to communities in need.

The Sikh Temple of Spokane donated $30,000 on Sunday afternoon to the Innovia Foundation’s Spokane Complex Wildfire Response Fund. The temple called on its members to donate so it could present one large check.

“Whatever we receive from him, we give it back,” said Simran Padda, a lifelong member of the Spokane temple. “We should give back as much as possible.”

Giving back is at the core of the Sikh temple’s mission. Whether it’s donating locally, to charities like Second Harvest and Innovia, or raising money for people affected by the Nepal floods, the temple bands together for the cause, she said.

The temple’s community grew in the past two decades, member Manivir Singh said, and many members work in academia, healthcare and engineering. Many families do quite well for themselves, he said, but they use that wealth to help others. After the Spokane Complex fires, the temple’s members brainstormed ideas to help the community. They chose Innovia because the foundation ensures money goes to organizations directly involved in relief efforts.

Members of the temple gathered outside the building as Republican U.S. Rep. Michael Baumgartner, who represents Washington’s 5th District in Congress, shook hands and learned about the religion. He thanked the Sikh Temple of Spokane.

“I really appreciate how focused you are on families and hard work and education,” he said. “Many of your stories are very reaffirming to the American dream. That if you come to America and you work hard and you care about education and you save your money and you invest in businesses, you can do very well.”

Baumgartner introduced Washington State University plant genetics researcher Kulvinder Gil, who spoke about the importance of having public understanding of Sikhism’s values, especially their capacity to give and support others.

“I can safely say we are the most generous, most peace-loving and very hardworking,” he said.

Innovia Foundation’s CEO Shelly O’Quinn accepted the check at the temple. She shook hands with Sikh temple members and smiled as Baumgartner and Gil gave brief speeches.

“I just want to thank you for your generosity as a community,” she said.

University of Montreal Launches Graduate Course on Sikhism in French

According to South Asian Herald “ The University of Montreal in Quebec, Canada, has become the first university in the world to launch a graduate-level course on Sikhism taught in French, according to supporters of the initiative. The course is offered as part of the university’s master’s and doctoral curricula.

Although several North American universities have established chairs in Sikh studies, the University of Montreal has taken the lead in introducing courses on Sikhism in French, said Montreal-based businessman Baljeet Singh Chadha and his wife, Mandeep “Roshi” Kaur Chadha.

“Sikh Studies in French will start with the current academic session beginning this month. It is a milestone representing an important step forward in the academic study of Sikhism and in making Sikh studies accessible to French-speaking students and scholars. Also, these courses create bridges for interreligious and intercultural understanding,” Baljeet Singh Chadha said.

According to a statement from the university, the graduate-level course will offer an in-depth examination of the Sikh tradition and its connections to the bhakti tradition. It will cover sacred texts as well as Sikh rituals, doctrines, philosophy and belief systems.

The course is being taught under the supervision of Professor Diana Dimitrova.

It will also examine the effects of colonialism on the Sikh tradition and the postcolonial period, including conflicts and nationalist movements. Other areas of study include contemporary Sikhism in India and the diaspora, along with representations of the Sikh tradition in popular films.

The course is taught in French, while students may complete examinations and papers in either French or English. Classes began September 2.

Dimitrova is a full professor of South Asian traditions and cultures at the University of Montreal and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She earned a doctorate in South Asian studies from Heidelberg University in Germany.

She has served as a visiting scholar at McGill University in Canada; the University of Miami in the United States; KU Leuven, the University of Liège and the Free University of Brussels in Belgium; the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris; and Heidelberg University.

Her academic interests include cultural identity, nationalism, discourses of otherness and South Asian perspectives on the body. Her recent publications include Cultural Identity in Hindi Plays: Poetics, Politics and Theatre in India, published by Oxford University Press in 2023, and the edited volume Mythologizing in South Asian Traditions: Myth, Gender, Power and Politics, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2025. Her current research focuses on the Brahma Kumaris tradition in Canada and the United States.

Dimitrova has served as president and past president of the Canadian Society for the Study of Religion. She was also a member of the executive board of the Canadian Corporation for Studies in Religion and co-editor of the “Matière à pensée” series published by the University of Montreal Press.

She currently serves as editor of Routledge’s Series on South Asian Culture and Society and as an editor of De Gruyter Brill’s Culture, Religion and Society series.

County museum celebrating opening of ‘Sikhs in America’ exhibit at Micke Grove Park

For the first time in its history, the San Joaquin County Historical Museum has dedicated a major exhibition to preserving and sharing the history of the local Sikh community that is deeply woven into the fabric of the region.

The opening celebration of “The Sikhs in America: Faith, Resilience, and Power” exhibit takes place Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum located in Mike Grove Park south of Lodi.

The opening celebration will feature remarks from community leaders, authentic Punjabi cuisine, demonstrations of traditional Sikh martial arts (Gatka), and live music celebrating Sikh culture and heritage.

Presented by the San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum in collaboration with the Sikh American History Project and the Stockton Gurdwara, this dynamic bilingual exhibit (presented in both Punjabi and English) brings more than a century of Sikh history in San Joaquin County to life.

Viewers will follow an engaging timeline that explores early migration through British Columbia, the founding of the historic Stockton Gurdwara and Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society, and the Sikh American community’s continued growth despite targeted immigration laws and devastating global events.

Along the way, immersive mini-stations spotlight Sikh contributions to agriculture and trucking, powerful traditions like gatka martial arts, political and social activism, and vibrant contemporary Sikh art.

Speaking to IANS, Nirmal Singh said the museum would play a vital role in connecting future generations with Sikh history, the sacrifices of the Gurus and warriors, and India’s cultural heritage, while strengthening national unity.

Sikh Community to Celebrate 200 Years of Settlement in Assam

According to Sentinel Assam “ The Sikhs of Assam have a rich and glorious history. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, visited Assam during his first Udasi (missionary journey) in 1505. Later, at another important point in history, the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, visited Assam in 1667, adding further significance to the history of Sikhs in the state.

Although Sikhs migrated to Assam at different times for various reasons, the most significant permanent settlement began during the Burmese (Maan) invasion of Assam between 1818 and 1822. At the request of Swargadeo Chandrakanta Singha, the King of Assam, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab sent a force of 500 Sikh soldiers under the leadership of the brave Chaitanya Singh to fight against the Burmese. After the final battle of Hadirachaki, many of these Sikh soldiers settled permanently in Assam. This marked the beginning of the indigenous Sikh community in Assam, a history that now spans more than two centuries.

In fact, if the establishment of Gurdwara Mataji at Chaparmukh in 1820 is taken as the base year, the bicentenary of the permanent settlement of Assamese Sikhs should have been celebrated in 2020. However, the event could not be organised due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the Assamese Sikh Santha, the state's traditional social organisation of Sikhs, has become divided and weakened because of prolonged inaction by its leadership.

Against this backdrop, a special general meeting held on June 7, 2026, at the Borkola Central Gurdwara resolved to organise a grand bicentenary celebration of the permanent Sikh settlement in Assam. Accordingly, a general meeting of the Indigenous Sikhs of Assam has been scheduled for July 12 at the Borkola Central Gurdwara, the cultural and religious centre for Assamese Sikhs.

The meeting will discuss the present condition and future direction of the Assamese Sikh Santha. It will also initiate the formation of the organising committee for the grand celebration marking 206 years of the permanent settlement of Sikhs in Assam.

Kaur becomes first Sikh to serve on U.S. religious freedom commission

According to NorthWest Asian Weekly “ Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer announced on May 21 the appointment of Dr. Gunisha Kaur to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), making her the first Sikh to serve on the bipartisan federal panel.

Kaur, a physician, researcher and human rights advocate based in New York, was recommended by Schumer for a two-year term on USCIRF. The independent legislative branch agency monitors religious freedom conditions abroad and advises the president, Congress and the State Department on policy recommendations.

Kaur serves as the Salvatore Family Medical Director of the Weill Cornell Center for Human Rights and is the founding director of the Human Rights Impact Lab. She is also an associate professor of anesthesiology and director of the Anesthesiology Global Health Initiative at Weill Cornell Medicine.

An anesthesiologist by training, Kaur’s work has focused on displaced populations, including migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Her research has received support from institutions including the National Institutes of Health and the National Academy of Medicine.

USCIRF was created under the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act. The commission is composed of nine members appointed by the president and congressional leaders and is tasked with monitoring violations of religious liberty worldwide.

This marks the first in a series of partnerships designed to extend healthcare access through organised affinity groups.

The scheme enables members to access quality healthcare through collective participation and pooled risk, making cover more affordable and sustainable than traditional individual plans. The solution offers essential inpatient and outpatient benefits, helping address one of the biggest barriers many households continue to face – the high upfront cost of accessing quality medical cover individually.

Eligibility spans from children as young as 38 weeks to senior citizens aged 65 years and above, with inpatient benefit options starting from Ksh 250,000 and extending up to Ksh 10 million. Enrolment will be facilitated through appointed agents within the community structure.

600,000 people set to attend largest Vaisakhi parade outside India in Surrey

According to CBC “ Hundreds of thousands of people are set to attend the Vaisakhi parade in Surrey, B.C., on Saturday, as the annual Sikh harvest festival draws the largest parade crowd of its kind outside of India.

Organizers estimate at least 600,000 people will attend the annual parade — with attendees celebrating delicious food, community and the Sikh faith's commitment to service and selflessness.

Road closures will be in place for the duration of the event, according to Surrey police, who said commuters should expect significant delays between 72 Avenue and 88 Avenue, as well as between Scott Road and King George Boulevard.

One of the largest Vaisakhi parades outside of India takes place on Saturday. Two organizers, Moninder Singh and Akashdeep Singh, join host Gloria Macarenko for a conversation on the upcoming festivities.

Akashdeep Singh, who has attended the parade since he was a child, has helped organize it for over half a decade now.

He said that the parade allowed the local Sikh community to showcase its traditions — especially that of serving free food, in honour of the traditions of seva and langar.

"It means more than just looking out for your own ... the ability for a Sikh to go and be there for everyone and anyone," he said on CBC's On The Coast.

Vaisakhi celebrates the creation of the order of the Khalsa in 1699, a defining moment in Sikh history that gave the Sikh faith its final form.

Moninder Singh, a spokesperson for the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar who has been helping organize the event since 2007, said it has grown from one that attracted 55,000 people to the massive celebration it is today.

"I think the growth has been really [about] ... a vibrant community in Surrey, the multiculturalism that is in Canada, other people wanting to learn about the Sikh faith and us obviously wanting to learn about our neighbours as well," he said. Moninder said that the parade had never seen any significant security breaches in the nearly two decades since it has been organized in Surrey.

But in light of the car-ramming that claimed 11 lives at the Lapu-Lapu Day festival in Vancouver last year, he said police and organizers would be stepping up security.

"Major arterial roadways are blocked [so] that cars and other larger vehicles are not able to make it through into the parade route," he said.

"So, it has been that way for a few years. But we are definitely upping the security just to make sure that people feel safe coming to the event." The Surrey Police Service advises families attending the event to have safety plans in place and keep children within eyesight at all times.

It also says drones would be prohibited over the parade.

Full details on road closures are available on the City of Surrey website. Organizers are recommending that attendees take transit to the event, which would drop them off near the parade's starting point.

Sikh Canadians Today: A Community Shaping Canada’s Future

According to Weekly Voice “ Sikh Heritage Month is not only a time to reflect on the past but also an opportunity to recognize the growing influence of Sikh Canadians across the country. According to the 2021 census, Canada is home to 771,790 Sikhs, representing approximately 2.1 percent of the national population, making Sikhism the fourth largest religion in Canada.

The largest Sikh populations are found in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta, with major communities in cities such as Brampton, Surrey, Calgary, and Edmonton. In fact, Canada now has the second largest Sikh population in the world after India and the highest national proportion of Sikhs anywhere globally.

Sikh Canadians have played an increasingly visible role in politics and public leadership. Leaders such as Jagmeet Singh, who became the first visible minority leader of a major federal political party, represent the growing participation of Sikh Canadians in shaping national policy and public debate. Over the years, Sikh Canadians have also served as cabinet ministers, premiers, mayors, and Members of Parliament.

Beyond politics, Sikh Canadians continue to contribute strongly to sectors such as transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education. Community institutions such as gurdwaras remain central to social life and continue the tradition of langar, service, and volunteerism that has defined Sikh identity for generations.

GNDU makes ‘Basic Knowledge of Sikhism’ course mandatory for undergraduates

According to Babushahi “ The Academic Council of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has decided to introduce a compulsory course titled “Basic Knowledge of Sikhism” for all undergraduate programmes starting from the 2026–27 academic session.

The course, prepared by the Guru Nanak Studies Department, will carry two academic credits. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Academic Council chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjeet Singh.

The council approved the recommendations of the Board of Control of the Guru Nanak Studies Department for implementing the course across various departments of the university. According to the proposal, the subject will be delivered through online mode by the Directorate of ODL and Online Studies.

During the meeting, the council also approved the renaming of the Centre for South Central Asia Studies as the Centre for Central Asia Studies, located on the university campus.

Another major decision taken by the council was to introduce several common courses through online mode from the 2026–27 academic session under programmes of the Directorate of ODL and Online Studies. These courses include Environmental Studies, Drug Abuse Problem Management and Prevention, Human Rights, and Human Values and Understanding Harmony, which are already being taught in universities and affiliated colleges.

Addressing the members, Vice-Chancellor Dr Karamjeet Singh said the Academic Council plays a crucial role in framing academic policies and improving the university’s curriculum. He welcomed members attending both online and offline, including principals and faculty members from affiliated colleges.

He emphasised that while introducing new courses, the university must carefully assess infrastructural facilities and required resources. “The university is not in a hurry to start new programmes without proper planning, but updating the curriculum according to contemporary needs is essential,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also informed the council that the university has initiated the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Maryland in the United States for academic collaboration. Under this initiative, students will gain opportunities to engage with emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Cyber Security.

He said the collaboration will offer international academic exposure to students without imposing heavy financial burdens. In the initial phase, around 60 students from the Computer Science stream will be shortlisted, out of which 30 students will participate in online interactions and joint academic programmes with the partner university.

The council was also informed that proposals for 14 new courses from different faculties were presented during the meeting. These include programmes in Psychology, a four-year course in Social Sciences, certificate courses, and an M.Tech programme in Electronics and Communication.

Dr Karamjeet Singh further said the university is planning to revive some previously functional academic centres, including departments related to Philosophy as well as the Centre for Central Asia Studies.

Highlighting the importance of employability, he noted that the university is exploring new models such as remote learning and remote employment, enabling students to connect with global opportunities through modern technology.

Referring to the rapid advancement of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that both teachers and students must equip themselves with new technological skills to remain relevant in the evolving academic and professional landscape.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dean Academic Affairs Dr Harvinder Singh Saini welcomed the members and highlighted the major achievements of the university. Later, the meeting agenda was presented by Registrar Dr K. S. Chahal.

Fleetwood Park Secondary Sikh Students Association hosts school’s first-ever langar

According to Surrey Schools “ Members and volunteers from Fleetwood Park Secondary's Sikh Students Association hosted the first-ever langar for the school community, serving 280 vegetarian meals to students and staff. In Sikhism, a langar is a free community kitchen at gurdwaras that provides meals to anyone regardless of caste, creed or religion.

Sikh students at Fleetwood Park Secondary recently showed their generosity as the school’s Sikh Students Association organized its first langar for the school community, serving 280 meals while spreading awareness about Sikh values of equality, service and community.

In January, students from the association and dozens of volunteers organized and ran the inaugural langar, known in Sikhism as a free community kitchen found in every gurdwara that provides vegetarian meals to anyone who wishes to join, regardless of caste, creed or religion. The goal of the event was to introduce the school community to this meaningful aspect of Sikh culture while creating an opportunity for students and staff to come together, connect and learn through a shared meal.

Fleetwood Park Secondary's first-ever langar served as an opportunity for students to give back through service, raise awareness for Sikh values and connect with others through a shared meal.

“The idea came from students who wanted to create an inclusive experience where everyone, regardless of background, could sit together and share a meal as equals,” said teacher Jasdeep Kaur Sandhu. “Langar represents unity and humility, and students felt this was a meaningful way to bring those principles into our school environment.

“It was also an opportunity to educate the broader school community about Sikh traditions in a hands-on and welcoming way.”

The association began two years ago after students from Sandhu’s Punjabi class expressed interest in learning more about Sikh history, and was formed to create a safe and supportive space where Sikh students could explore their identity and deepen their understanding of their faith and heritage.

As the students began learning more, Sandhu said they wanted to share their history and practices with their school community, leading to the langar and other events at Fleetwood Park. Last June, the association organized a day to serve chabeel, a refreshing rose-flavoured summer drink.

“Through events and education, the group encourages leadership, service, and cultural pride among students,” she said. “It also aims to promote intercultural understanding and build bridges within the broader school community.”

Sandhu said the generosity of the association’s members and volunteers aligns with the three pillars of Sikhism:

Naam Japna (meditation and remembrance of God);
Kirat Karni (earning an honest living); and
Vand ke Chakna (giving and sharing with others).

“The students’ willingness to volunteer their time and energy reflects the deep-rooted value of seva, or selfless service,” said Sandhu. “The level of student engagement demonstrated a strong sense of ownership and pride in hosting the langar for the school community.

“Their generosity extends beyond cultural events – it is reflected in how they support peers, staff and the wider community. They see service not as an obligation, but as a privilege and responsibility.”

Sikh Arts & Film Festival celebrates cinema, community heritage, technology in city

According to Tribune “ Chandigarh’s Tagore Theatre turned into a vibrant cultural crossroads on Saturday as ‘Sikhlens: Sikh Arts & Film Festival 2026’ blended international cinema, technology and heritage into a single high-energy event, screening 25 films.

From the moment the doors opened at 11 am, the venue reflected a seamless meeting of local tradition and the global Sikh diaspora. Hosted by Pinaka Mediaworks and Sikhlens, the festival marked a milestone by bringing together directors from the US, UK and Canada — Bicky Singh, Gurpreet K Singh, Nikki Gill and Harinder Singh — on one stage in India for the first time.

With free entry for all sessions, students from Panjab University were seen sharing rows with international innovators and diplomats, all immersed in the same cinematic journey. The morning began with the meditative strains of the Tanti Saaz, traditional string instruments such as the ‘saranda’ and ‘dilruba’, performed by Sri Guru Granth Sahib Vidya Kendar. The “Harmony Symphony” created a reverent atmosphere before the spotlight shifted to the launch of “The Legend of 1972: Life Hockey and Beyond”, the biography of Olympian Kuldeep Singh Bhogal, who represented Uganda at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Bhogal’s presence as guest of honour highlighted the global reach of Sikh excellence.

Adding diplomatic weight to the event was Major Guneet Chaudhary, Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic for the region, who attended as special guest. Tejwant Singh Gill, president of Guudwara Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, Sector 34, also attended the event.

A major highlight was the Indian premiere of the documentary, “Crafting Legacy”, which showcased the journey of Bal Choda, lead engineer and inventor associated with the iconic British brand Aston Martin. The film traced his inspiration back to childhood.

“My grandad bought me a matchbox Aston Martin when I was 7 years old,” Bal shared. “I looked at that car and said one day I will work there, this is my dream.”

The festival also served as an informal learning space for aspiring filmmakers, with several professional directors interacting with the audience.

One of the most captivating moments unfolded on stage during the gatka performance by Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji Gatka Akhara. The martial art was presented under theatrical lighting, with children as young as four to six performing with striking precision with proud parents watching from the wings.

Seventeen exhibitors transformed the space into a living museum. Highlights included the 2026 calendar art by the Singh Twins from Liverpool and the intricate “Seed, Memory & Soil” exhibit by Aman Singh Gulati, who etches detailed historical narratives onto tiny seeds. Currently based in Gujarat, Aman noted his long association with the festival. “Each tiny art piece has taken me more than 15-20 hours to complete,” he said.

Collectors such as Narinderpal Singh displayed rare coins and artefacts from the Sikh empire. A key moment of the ceremony was the presentation of the prestigious “Seva – Sarbat Da Bhala – Chardi Kala” Award to 41 artists for their contributions to art, culture and humanitarian service.

Speaking about the vision behind the festival, founder Bicky said, “Panjab is our home, we always wanted to bring this festival here. There are stories of our culture, religion, faith and community which we wanted to take globally for our diaspora and vice-versa.”

The festival closed on a high note with the powerful gatka performance by Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University gatka team.

Iowa Becomes 21st U.S. State to Include Sikhi in School Curriculum

With this update, Iowa joins 20 other states in ensuring that the Sikh faith and history are accurately represented in public classrooms.

The shift follows a strategic push by the Sikh Coalition, which began engaging with Iowa education officials in late 2025. By providing specialized resources and consulting with state experts, the Coalition successfully advocated for Sikhi’s inclusion, specifically within the seventh-grade modern world history standards.

According to Savleen Singh, Senior Education Manager at the Sikh Coalition, this milestone is a proactive defense against the bullying and misrepresentation often faced by Sikh students.

Iowa’s adoption means that over 26 million students across the United States now have access to a curriculum that includes Sikhism. The Sikh Coalition plans to continue this momentum, with eyes set on ensuring similar inclusion in Texas later this year.

The new standards will now move into the implementation phase, with the Sikh Coalition providing ongoing support to the Iowa Board of Education to ensure the transition is seamless and effective.

‘Sikh Empire’ exhibition centre of attraction at Punjab craft mela

According to the Indian Express “ Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday inaugurated the exhibition titled “The Sikh Empire (1710-1849): Perspectives of International Artists and Authors” at the ongoing Punjab Sakhi Shakti Craft Mela at Sheesh Mahal. “The Sikh Empire Empire” exhibition has garnered significant attention from the visitors. The exhibition will continue till March 2.

This is the 14th exhibition organised by the Panjab Digital Library (PDL). This is also in collaboration with the archives department. The Punjab State Archives Department has put up such an exhibition after nearly two decades.

The archive department (Chandigarh and Patiala) officials said this exhibition showcases the department’s valuable documents. They said the archives have displayed materials such as Khalsa Durbar records from 1839-1840 and 1841-1846 Toshakhana (treasury) records, the Punjab Gazette of 1857, the royal court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Tawarikh-e-Raj Khalsa, a map of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s kingdom, the royal genealogy, military records of the Khalsa Darbar, and the first book written about Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1840.

On this occasion, Punjab Digital Library’s Outreach Director Dalbir Singh and coordinator Geetanjali said the exhibition presents the perspectives, in the form of documents and portraits, of foreign artists and authors who visited Punjab during the Sikh Empire.

It offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience original archival materials, historical artifacts, and rarely-seen perspectives in the royal heritage atmosphere of Punjab, and artistic and literary connections between Punjab and the Sikh Empire, the officials said.

This exhibition was prepared by the interns of the Panjab Digital Library.

Dalbir also said with the digitization of 100 million pages, PDL is the world’s largest repository of Punjabi heritage. He said that this allows Punjab’s history, memory, and cultural richness to be shared globally.

At the venue, the Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Career Hub of Punjabi University has also set up an exhibition of traditional items crafted by students under the sub-group of Rural Tourism & Traditional Arts.

Under the instructions of Shiromani Committee President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, this assistance amount was handed over to the schools by Shiromani Committee members Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, Surjit Singh Bhittevad, Secretary of Dharam Prachar Committee Balwinder Singh Kahlwan in the form of fees of Sikligar children studying in various places of Andhra Pradesh.

It is noteworthy that the Shiromani Committee has decided to pay the fees of the children every year to make Sikligar Sikh children self-reliant. Under this, the Shiromani Committee has sent the fees for the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Speaking in this regard, Shiromani Committee member Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta said that Sikligar Sikhs living in different states are an important part of the society and the Shiromani Committee is constantly striving for the education of their children. He said that the purpose of paying these fees is to educate Sikligar Sikh children to make them self-reliant, so that in the future they can stand on their own feet. He said that it is a matter of happiness for us that many children are getting jobs after studying with the help of the Shiromani Committee, which will become the support of their families.

Giving information in this regard, Secretary of Dharam Prachar Committee Balwinder Singh said that as per the instructions of SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the fees of Sikligar and Vanjara Sikh children studying in various schools and colleges of Andhra Pradesh have been directly handed over to the schools and colleges.

According to Tribune “ Harcharan Singh, the first turbaned Pakistani Sikh, who made history by securing a place in the Pakistan army has now become the first Sikh to be decorated with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was born in 1987 in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak. His promotion to Lieutenant Colonel was approved after rigorous selection board evaluation conducted in late 2025. Minorities have faced a hard time finding space in the Islamic framework of statehood in the neighbouring country.

Confirming this, Pakistan Punjab’s Minister for Minorities Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora said though many Christians have served in the Pakistan army, no Hindu or Sikh ‘could qualify’. Singh had joined the Pakistan army in 2007 at the age of 20 as Captain. Initially serving in the Ordnance Corps, Singh later volunteered for a combat role and was posted to the 12th Battalion of the Baloch Regiment where he served in demanding operational and border areas while being at the rank of Major.

“Lt Col Singh’s achievement has proved that there is no barrier for the minorities in Pakistan, and that only talent speaks and sets the parameters for success. Lt Col Singh is an example of equality of all religions and unity in Pakistan. We, as part of the Sikh community, will give him a rousing welcome when he visits his hometown next,” he said.

Delighted at his brother’s success, Mastan Singh, the former president of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) said, “Lt Col Singh is the pride of Baba Nanak’s city and the whole Sikh community, as well,” he said. At present, Lt Col Singh is posted at Abbottabad in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

According to BBC “ A community kitchen organised by the University of Birmingham's (UoB) Sikh Society hopes to serve free food to more than 2,000 people.

In Sikhism, Langar offers free vegetarian food to anyone, regardless of social class, gender or religion.

It has been organised by the society for more than 20 years, and will take place on Monday from 11:00 to 15:00 GMT.

"Beyond providing free food, the event serves as an educational and cultural opportunity, helping attendees gain a deeper understanding of Sikh principles and fostering inclusivity across the university," UoB said.
