Abstract

At present, it is common to observe environments with organic and inorganic pollution, defined as co-contamination. Most industrial and urban effluents release both pollutant types, leading to a complex environmental problem, as the biota must be tolerant to both xenobiotics. Organic contamination can easily removed out via bio-conversion but inorganic pollutants (Heavy metal) cannot be removed from the contaminated sites easily. Aspergilus niger, an efficient strain to remove the heavy metals, was trained with different heavy metals of various concentration. The strain acclimatized to detoxify the zinc and cadmium. The cadmium adaptation was the result of physiological mechanisms and the activated biochemical processes conferred resistance to zinc. Furthermore, the strain was centrifuged and used as bioadsorbent for heavy metals. The results emphasized the heavy metal detoxification abilities of Aspergilus niger. This data is significant for the environmental biotechnology, suggesting that such tolerance and co-tolerance could be acquired in natural environments. So a simple bioremediation strategy could enhance the detoxification of these polluted areas to make free from inorganic pollutants.

In any dairy plant, the quantity and characteristics of effluent is depending upon the extent of production activities, pasteurization to several milk products. The anaerobic digesters in the first phase of treatment, which is followed by high rate aerobic treatment, remain as the most common effluent treatment scheme for dairy plants. 3 batch reactors were fabricated using plastic box of height 12cm, width 16cm and length 28cm. Reactors were of capacity 8 liters and 6.5 liters was taken as working volume. Treatment of dairy wastewater collected from equalization tank was carried out using different rate of aeration 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 and 640 ml/min was carried out to find optimum dosage of aeration for the degradation of COD. 320 ml/min was found to be having higher efficiency with 87.05% removal. Treatment using natural coagulant Moringa oleifera was carried out for the treated effluent from the plant. Treatment was carried out to find optimum dosage of MO and optimum time required for the reduction turbidity and optical density of absorbance and transmittance. 0.6gm/100ml was found to be optimum dosage and 60 min was found as optimum time.

The photocatalytic decolorizing efficiencies of two synthesized ZnO composites (ZnO composite-I and ZnO composite -II) against Coralene Red F3BS dye in aqueous solution was investigated. The ZnO composites were synthesized by simple solution combustion method using hydrazine hydrate as a combustion agent and characterized by Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). All the photocatalytic experiments were carried out in presence of natural sunlight. By varying catalyst concentrations and pH of dye solutions, the influence of these parameters on decolorization were studied. Among the synthesized ZnO composite particles, ZnO composite-II proved to be very efficient by achieving a rapid 98% decolorization of the dye at highly alkaline condition.

Abstract

Aniline was electropolymerized in phenyl phosphinic acid (PPA) medium to yield a greenish black smooth adhesive film of polyaniline (PAni) on Pt/mild steel electrodes with an electronic conductivity of ~8 S/cm. The PAn films formed in PPA showed good adhesion to the mild steel electrode surface. The thickness of the film was found to be around 20 micron after 20 cycles by sweeping in the potential range –0.2 to 1.2 V vs sce at a scan rate of 20 mV/sec. Characterization of this polyaniline film by various electroanalytical techniques such as cyclic voltametry, a.c.impedance techniques, scanning electron micrograph and spectroscopic ltechniques like 1H NMR, electronic and vibrational studies were carried out. . The PAni so obtained had a solubility of 2.3 g/l in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). Impedance studies were performed to describe that PAni film acted as a corrosion barrier to mild steel in an aggressive medium (1 M HCl). Thickness and adhesive nature of the polymer film on mild steel was established by SEM images.

Present study has attempted to assess the soil organic carbon (SOC) pool in 23, 22, 21 and 20-years old ecologically restored rock phosphate mine site in Doon Valley (India). The study was carried out for a period of 2 years in the four age series of restored sites and one adjoining natural forest for comparison. Results of the present investigation show that SOC in the restored site was higher than that in adjoining natural forest. A highly significant difference (p < 0.001) was observed between the sites.
