Fistral blue?

The weather in Cornwall this year has been disappointing to say the least! And forecasters are not rushing to tell us about a BBQ summer at any point now! Check out the Fistral Webcam yesterday! Look at the dribble windswell surf too! It’s a disgrace!!

But never fear, you can escape! We are off surfing in Seignosse (near Hossegor), France in September, and you can join us for as little as £342! See our France holiday page for all the details, and check out some of the photos of previous surf tours.

The difference in the weather is quite amazing. Yesterday Seignosse had 21C water temperature and was sunny and hot. The surf was small but clean. Temperatures are due to average 31C next week! Ahhhh, bliss!

Jordy Smith, the South African legend, won the 4th world tour event at J-Bay at the tender age of 22! He now leads the world ratings. The next event is at Teahupoo,Taiarapu-Tahiti, one of the worlds heaviest waves. Watch it live on the ASP site!

Exciting times today on the ASP World Tour as the wildcard and local legend, Sean Holmes knocked out Kelly Slater in round 3. This means Kelly won’t be leading the ASP race for this year’s world title after this event, as he chases his tenth.
Sean Holmes then went on to knock out another former world champion; Andy Irons. Another South African Jordy Smith is through to the quarter finals and could take the ratings lead for this years tour title. Go South Africa!!

J-Bay LIVE!!!

The 4th leg of the 2010 ASP World Tour is at J-Bay in South Africa! Have a look at the live heats which are starting at around 6:30am GMT time. Watch it live!!

J-Bay and the supertubes are one of the world’s best point breaks. They give the world’s top surfers the perfect opportunity to show off their best moves.

Kelly Slater moved smoothly into round 3 chasing his 10th world title this year. The young guns looked impressive as well; with Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith smoothly through to round 3 as well. It looks like it’ll be running live all day today. It’s a bit smaller than yesterday, but still really good waves. Tomorrow’s swell forecast for J-Bay is picking up again.

If 6:30am is a bit early for you, you can still watch heats on demand on the ASP website.

Basking Sharks visit Cornwall

This time of year we can see all sorts of wildlife whilst we surf, and recently Basking Sharks have been spotted off the North Cornish coast. This amazing footage on YoutTube shows them off our North coast. Gorgeous!

Basking sharks are the largest fish in British waters and can reach lengths of around 10 metres and weigh up to 7 tonnes! Big Boys!!! But do not fear their approaching fin,….they aren’t Jaws at all! They feed on plankton. If you spot one tell the Basking Shark Trust on +44 (0) 1752 672020.

Don’t let ash cloud fears stop you flying

The volcanic ash cloud left more than 150,000 Britons stranded overseas in April, and many insurance companies chose to consider the ash cloud a ‘force majeur’ which means an act of God and therfore not covered by their policy. This has left many people unsure about booking flights for their next holiday.

Well don’t despair as insurance companies are starting to insure against this possibilty, either through their main policy, or as an optional add-on, for which they charge extra. We understand that Columbus Direct, Aviva and Direct Travel and are all offering ash-cloud cover [excuse the pun!].

If the sea has gone flat like now,…. and you are a surf desperado waiting for waves, like us,……., there are a few other activities you can do to keep your body and mind surf-ready.

Book a surf holiday! There is nothing like knowing you are off to warm seas in good company to surf to lift the spirits! Come with us in September to France and enjoy our surf camp. Meet new friends, improve your surfing skills, and visit the most beautiful area of South West France. Or join us in Morocco for an Arabian adventure in February next year. Paddle about. Keep your arms and shoulders ‘paddle fit’ by getting on your board and paddling about in the sea. Try a sheltered beach on a flat day to explore rock pools and little costal coves.
Get strength training. Get down your local gym and ask your friendly local gym instructor to show you excercises to strengten your paddling muscles. The stronger you are the better you’ll surf.
Stretch and relax. Try not to get stresssed by the lack of surf and instead take some time to do some yoga moves. Yoga helps you relax, and the combination of deep breathing and muscle stretching is excellent for your body and mind. Many of the stretches are great for opening up the joints, and mimic the poses you use surfing. Any good yoga book will show you how. Or try a local class with a qualified instructor if you’ve not done it before.

Beach breaks in Newquay Vs South West France

Watergate and Fistral (here in Newquay) were both going off yesterday. Everyone seemed to know it and was out enjoying the surf. There is lots of sand on the beaches, making the banks work nicely. Fingers crossed we don’t get a massive March swell before the summer so conditions stay the same.

We travel to South West France in September and the area we surf doesn’t have this problem. In France there is plenty of sand on the miles of beach breaks and you can litlerally choose a bank you want to surf. Here in the UK beaches can lose all their sand right down to the rock and that means a pain walking out to the surf in bare feet, as well as changes to how the sand banks work!

We’ve just uploaded some of our Morocco surf holiday photos to the galleries page.

The 2010 trip was a good one. We had some big surf days, but we also had some good smaller days. Most days the surf was head high or bigger on the big days. Most years we’ve had small surf in January, so this was a bit different than normal. We managed to get everybody out back at some point in their trip, and they enjoyed the challenge! We also had a great trip out to Imsouane and got some great waves there.

We had a front row seat as usual to watch the drama’s unfolding at Anchor Point! People coming in on the rocks, coming off on the rocks, dinging their boards, getting washed up on the rocks, etc etc!

Now looking forward to France this June and September!
