How Lucky are we to Have Something that Makes Saying Goodbye So Hard

Today is the big day! Exactly 15 years ago TODAY, June 16, 2009, we posted our very first blog post here on GLOGIRLY.

Glogirly had recently been laid off from her 20+ year career designing displays for Marshall Field’s and Macy’s. She went back to school to learn computer design and decided that it might be a good idea to dip her toes in social media and blogging just in case that’s where her next chapter would lead. She figured it would be a good place to practice graphic design and photography.

Two pretty big questions loomed over her head.

1. What to call it.

2. What to write.

What to call it was actually quite easy. Her sweetheart, love of her life, and husband is Gloman. The ‘Glo’ is the first three letters of their last name. He’s been Gloman since the day she met him by chance and fell head over heels in love. So naturally when they got married five years later, she became Glogirl. The domain, Glogirl.com, was taken so she went with Glogirly.com. She’s been Glogirly ever since.

What to write was far more complicated. A dear friend had a very witty and clever food blog. Another wrote about travel. Grilled cheese sandwiches and trips to northern Minnesota didn’t seem like something that would carry a blog more than a couple of posts. But Gloman had an idea! “Why don’t you have Katie introduce the blog?” And just like that, GLOGIRLY, the cat blog was born.

Little did we know, those first words written in a cat's voice would blossom into a decade and a half long relationship with so many wonderful friends and readers across the country and the world. It truly has been one of the most important and rewarding parts of our lives. It's hard to find the right words to express what your friendship, love, and support has meant to us as you've welcomed us into your inboxes and your hearts.

Rest assured, our blog isn't going anywhere and the 2,493 blog posts we've published will remain right here, forever. (...as long as Glogirly remembers to pay her bills! LOL!) After all, when Glogirly can't remember when something happened or where a special photo she took is, she just searches her blog. It's like her own personal encyclopedia and diary. She'd be lost without it.

15 Week Countdown- Week 14: The Cat Tree Super Highway

Today's blog post is one of Glogirly's favorites. The photos are taken in her office, a.k.a the guest room. Whenever she works in there, the kitties supervise her from high atop the cat tree. It's an added bonus for guests when they are supervised as well.

The conversation between Ellie and Waffles highlights Ellie's confidence and chutzpah. Despite her slight physique, as compared to Waffles "he-must-work-out" mancat muscles, she speaks her mind and even walks all over him. Often leaving him wondering what just happened.

The Cat Tree Super Highway

ELLIE: Hey, Mister Waffles! I made it all the way up the cat tree!

WAFFLES: ALL the way??? Barely. You're not even close to the top.

ELLIE: Beep, beep! Coming through, Mister Waffles!

WAFFLES: Sheesh...never thought there'd be a traffic jam on my very own cat tree.

ELLIE: Beep-beep, beep!

WAFFLES: Clearly we're going to need some kind of EZ pass thing. Rush hour's going to be a nightmare. Just wait until there's SNOW.

15 Week Countdown- Week 13: With Love From Waffles to Katie

Four years ago this month, we said goodbye to our Katie. She was the inspiration for our blog and for many years, its sole voice. Glogirly wasn't sure she'd ever find the words for our blog again. But through the love of Waffles, she soon realized it had never really left her.

Just one week after Katie's passing, we posted the following thoughts of Waffles as he gazed out the window looking towards the sky. He helped us all to smile again, even if our eyes were still leaky.

WAFFLES: Hello, earth to Boss! Are you there, Boss? Come in, Boss.

WAFFLES: Lots of people are really sad that you're not here, Boss. Especially Glogirly. We're OK, but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do without you. Like what if I need advice about girls and stuff.

And what about breakfast? I don't have anybody's food to steal except my own. And that's not as much fun as stealing yours.

WAFFLES: Glogirly says you're not coming back, Boss. Are you sure?? What if I send you directions or something. Is there GPS where you are, Boss?

Don't worry about your frog and your purple fuzzy heart. I'll take care of them until I see you again.

One Week
A week ago Saturday, I said my final goodbye to my sweet Katie Girl. It took me a few days to gain the courage and strength to read through all the beautiful comments friends left on our blog and on Facebook. I was scared to read them. Missing her so much, I wondered if I would miss her even more. But when I started reading, I realized how much my sweet little girl meant to so many people. People who've been following us since the beginning "shoelace incident" to those that just recently stumbled onto us.

I've never really written about serious topics like nutrition, health, training, etc... It's always been about smiles and fun, with some occasional heartfelt wisdom sprinkled in when Katie tried to explain the meaning of love, life, and loss to Waffles. I hadn't realized what a difference the silly conversations between two cats had made in the lives of our friends and readers. And how the photos enabled them to become part of so many families other than our own.

Knowing that someone started their day with Katie, and because of that it was a good day, means the absolute world to me. That her cheeky wisdom and sarcastic wit wiped someone's sadness away is one of the greatest gifts of my life.

I guess what I'm trying to say is thank you. Thank you for loving Katie. Thank you for loving Waffles. Thank you for loving me. I've read through every single comment here and on Facebook and have them all saved with my many memories of Katie. I don't ever want to forget a single one. You all have made this heartbreaking loss bearable. I've felt your love and comfort wrapped around me like a soft blanket.

I've been keeping Katie's special things close, where I can see them, touch them, and remember her. Her green frog that Gloman gave her 12 years ago. Her purple MOM heart she carried around in her mouth. Our photo from her very first night with us that I later used in our first blog header. And my favorite, the purple ribbon and Happy Anniversary tag she was wearing when Gloman brought her home to me.

Forever missed.

Waffles has always been such a good sport when it comes to his harness, santa suit, and other silly fashion statements we've tried out with him over the years. When Glogirly saw the cowboy mouse online, well...she just couldn't resist. And sweet Ellie couldn't resist having a little fun with Mr. Waffles and Mr. Mouse.

WAFFLES: Hang on, Mr. Mouse! This bucking mancat's got your number!

ELLIE: I don't think you bucked him very hard, Mr. Waffles. He's still there.

WAFFLES: What, is this guy velcroed onto me or something?

ELLIE: You're right Mr. Waffles. Mr. Mouse has velcro pants.

WAFFLES: Velcro pants???!

WAFFLES: I think velcro pants are punishment enough.

About Today's Photos

It's Halloween tomorrow! Or today, depending on when you're tuning in. Although we don't have any trick or treaters visiting us in the Mountains, Glogirly is still a sucker for a mancat cowboy with a mouse saddled up on his back. (!)

Not to worry... no mancats or mice were harmed in the making of these photos. Waffles (and Ellie by default) got plenty of treats after their quick photo session.

Waffles has been hard at work teaching Ellie how to use the scratching post. She's starting to understand the scratching aspect of it all, but hasn't yet managed to make it to the top. She wants to SOOO badly! Glogirly even put a smaller scratcher next to the pole to help her, but she's still just a little too tiny to make it to the summit.

Today's post honors all the cat moms, moms without fur, and the influential women who have shaped our lives. Like the kitties, Glogirly was adopted when she was just a kitten...er, a baby. She's been blessed with four mothers over the course of her life. First was the young woman who gave her life. Then was her mom you taught her how to live it. Her mom chose a very special woman to be her godmother, who near and far was always there for her, especially after she lost her mom to cancer. And most recently, Glogirly's birth-aunt, the older sister of her birthmother. She was another mother. Unexpected, and one of her life's greatest gifts.

Here's a spacial conversation between Glogirly and Waffles. And a glimpse of those four amazing women Glogirly has called mother.

A Cat Mom's Love, plus Honoring Glogirly's Many Mothers

WAFFLES: So, Glogirly?

GLOGIRLY: Yes, Waffles?

WAFFLES: Glogirly, are you my mom? Because you don't really look like me. You don't even have orange fur or stripes or anything. But I really love you. You know, like a mom and stuff.

GLOGIRLY: Of course I'm your mom, Waffles. I adopted you so that you'd be part of our family and we ALL could love you, take care of you, and spend our lives together.

WAFFLES: So even though you're not really a cat, you can still be my mom? Like forever and stuff

GLOGIRLY: Forever and always. Forever and ever, Waffles.

WAFFLES: And so you're Ellie's mom too, right? Forever and everything?

GLOGIRLY: Forever and EVERYTHING.

Happy Mother's Day X4!

Mother's Day is a pretty special day for our girl. You see, like us kitties she was adopted as a tiny little one. Not only did she have a mom who loved her with all her heart and taught her how to love and be kind and study hard and grow up to find happiness and joy in the world, she's also been incredibly fortunate to have many mothers looking out for her and holding her in their hearts.

You could say Glogirly has 4 moms!

Her mom-mom, who along with her daddy adopted her when she was little like a kitten. She's lived more years without her than with her and even now, misses her so much.

Her birthmother, who carried her for nine months and had the strength and love to give her away.

Her Godmother, Barb. Their mothers were sisters. Glogirly's mom was the youngest and her Godmother's mom was the oldest. Growing up, Glogirly always knew that if anything ever happened to her parents, she would go to live with her Godparents, who have always loved her like their own. When Glogirly was just 24, she lost her mom (her mom-mom) to cancer. A few years later, she and her Godmother became very close and today they are closer than ever. Glogirly loves her with all her heart...and so does Waffles! She will always be a mother to her.

Her birthmother's sister (Dorothy), who Glogirly met 16 years ago and immediately bonded with. Her positivity and joyfulness are infectious. She welcomed Glogirly into her family with open arms and an open heart. Dorothy has three sons and Glogirly has become the daughter she never had.

An Update:

Sadly, less than a year ago, Glogirly lost both Dorothy and Barb. Within just a day of each other, heaven gained two more angels. This has made mother's day this year especially meaningful. Both sad for the loss of their frequent conversations and visit, but grateful for the memories and the mark they've made on her life.

Today's post is a fan favorite! We couldn't let this countdown go by without including it. Katie and Waffles had a complicated relationship. Waffles wanted to endear Katie SO much, but Katie really wanted nothing to do with him. It was not uncommon for fur to fly when Waffles made his moves. That's what made this post and the photos SO crazy.

Glogirly couldn't help herself when she saw how great these shots turned out. LOL! We hope you enjoy this as much as we did!

Shock waves out of the sleepy mountain town of Golden, Colorado today. Two supposed rival cats caught on camera in what can only be described as a most embarrassing and compromising position. According to an anonymous source, the lip-locking felines have been identified as Waffles and Katie of the GLOGIRLY cat blog.

The photographer behind the salacious shot is rumored to have sold exclusive rights to the photo for a figure in excess of 25 cents.

Katie, the tuxedo cat pictured above, originally argued the "misleading and horrifying snapshot" was a result of someone's mad Photoshop skills, however the authenticity of the image has been confirmed and the photograph deemed untouched.

Katie now claims the viral photo is "nothing more than a bad camera angle."

A VERY bad angle indeed.

Waffles, (pictured above in a press photo provided by his agent), has admitted he is the orange tabby shown only with his back to the camera in the controversial shot. He's wasted no time sharing the KISS photo on social media. Meanwhile, women across the globe and clowders of female cats are left shocked and heartbroken.

The complicated and often contemptuous relationship between Waffles and Katie is no secret to fans of their blog. According to legal experts, a single picture like the one published on the Enquirer today, exposing the two cats in a blatant public display of affection, could not only permanently tarnish their reputations but take down the entire GLOGIRLY empire with a single swipe of the paw.

Today's post is from 2016, back when we lived in our Minneapolis townhouse, Katie and Waffles would often hop up onto the bar stools overlooking the kitchen, and more importantly, the food prep area. But never until this day had they BOTH sat at the counter, side by side. With breakfast in their sights, they put adie their usual "complicated" relationship and Glogirly snapped away at as many photos as she could get. That's the story behind the photos...but what she imagined them saying to one another paints a far funnier conversation.

Waffles Tries Out His Pickup Lines on Katie

WAFFLES: Hey Boss, you come here often?

KATIE: Seriously? You're going to use that line on me?

WAFFLES: Ok. How about this - can I get your digits so we can FaceTime?

KATIE: Waffles, you're already in my face ALL the time. The last thing I need to do is FaceTime you. And mitts off my digits.

WAFFLES: Snapchat?

KATIE: Waffles...

WAFFLES: Man, picking up chicks is hard.

KATIE: Waffles, you've got a lot to learn about girl cats.

WAFFLES: So what am I supposed to say?

KATIE: Well, you should say nice things. Compliment her. Tell her you like her fur...

WAFFLES: Ok. I like your fur.

KATIE: Waffles, you need to romance it. "I love your furs... how do you keep them so silky-soft?"

WAFFLES: Thanks, Boss. I lick them everyday.

KATIE: No Waffles, you're supposed to ask ME how I keep MY fur so soft.

WAFFLES: But I already know. You lick yours like elebenty billion times a day. That's why you cough up all those nasty hairballs that Glogirly steps in and–

KATIE: Waffles... IF you want to impress the ladies, do NOT bring up hairballs. Ok, let's try this again. Just say, "Hello, my name is Waffles. What's your name?"

WAFFLES: Got it. HELLO, MY NAME IS WAFFLES!

KATIE: Take it down a notch, Waffles. A little lower.

Part of the fun of our countdown is perusing some of our most favorite blog posts. The funniest years of our blog were absolutely the early years of Waffles and Katie. Those of you that have been with us all this time know their relationship was complicated. Waffles was fascinated with Katie, vying for her attention every chance he got. Katie tolerated Waffles. It's not that she didn't like him...it was more like a sister brother relationship. Or rather, the all knowing older sister and annoying little brother relationship.

This is one of our MOST favorite funnies. In part because Katie NEVER let Waffles touch her. Like EVER. Until this. Until the infamous Paw Touch.

The Paw Touch that Rocked the World

WAFFLES: So Boss. We've been together now for about elebenty seven years.

KATIE: Actually, it 2 years, 8 months, 21 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes.

WAFFLES: That's what I said. Elebenty seven years.

KATIE: Fine. Elebenty whatever. So just how long are you planning on keeping your paw there? Because for the record, mine was here first. And yours is encroaching.

WAFFLES: Uh, but when a boy cat and a girl cat go out for elebenty seven years –

KATIE: Go OUT???

WAFFLES: Yeah, Boss. You know. Like going study and stuff.

KATIE: You mean going 'steady'? We are NOT going steady, Waffles.

WAFFLES: Does that mean we're not going to the first base thing?

KATIE: What, you mean like baseball?

Waffles is fascinated with Katie. He SO wants to engage. After breakfast, Katie trotted over to one of her favorite hang out spots - her big soft pillow by the sliding glass doors. It's one of the few spots Waffles usually lets her be. Until today.

He walked up to her, sat down just at the edge of her pillow and started meowing. Long, extended meows. Slowly he reached out with his right paw towards her. He carefully set it down right on top of her paw and then laid it on the pillow next to hers.

Then came the stare down.

This was one of those moments Glogirly would pay just about any amount of money to be able to read their minds.

15 Week Countdown- Week 6: Cat Tax

Since it's April 15 today, we thought it would be fun to share Ellie and Waffles take on taxes. In between skiing, Glogirly managed to find time to prep all her records for the big tax day and the kitties OF COURSE had to help.

Cat Tax Prep

WAFFLES: Whaddaya mean you can't deduct our toys on your taxes???

ELLIE: Glogirly says that's not how it works, Mr. Waffles. She also said you don't even know what a deduction is.

WAFFLES: I do too know what a deduct is.

ELLIE: You mean a deduction?

WAFFLES: That's what I said. And our toys should totally be a deduct. And our litter, and our food.

ELLIE: Glogirly said you also have to pay taxes to claim deductions. Do you pay taxes, Mr. Waffles?

WAFFLES: PAY?? You mean like with real money and stuff?

WAFFLES: This whole tax thing is no fun at all.

15 Week Countdown- Week 5: Face 2 Face

Last week we shared the arrival of sweet Ellie and her first face-to-face encounter with Waffles. We've often wondered if when Waffles looked at Ellie with eyes as big as saucers, he remembered Katie's glare when he first met her way when he joined the family. What goes around, comes around!

Here is one of our very first posts with Katie and Waffles. It comes from way back in 2012. FYI-In the beginning we called Waffles, "Waffles Too." Don't let that throw you. We'll have to explain that later! For now, we hope you enjoy Waffles in his fresh kitten cuteness and the shock and awe of Katie.

Face 2 Face

Hi everyone, Katie here.

He's out. Waffles Too has officially come out of the kitten room. After our supervised meet-and-greet I wrote of yesterday, Glogirly & Gloman decided (without my consultation I might add) they saw no reason Waffles Too and I couldn't spend the day together with the run of the townhouse ...under their watchful eyes.

Waffles Too THINKS he can stalk me.

That kitten was EVERYWHERE. I had no idea anything could move that fast. I just sat back and watched the show. It's like watching Animal Planet TV on steroids. Truth be told, it's kind of entertaining. So much so that I haven't even had reason to lower my ears into the aircraft position.

For the most part we kept our distance. But when Waffles Too approached, and crossed that sacred line, I countered with a well articulated hiss.

Only once did the pea eyed monster return fire. He caught on quickly though and began to walk around me, maintaining a 24" no fly zone.

Stand Off at the OK Wand Toy

Toys. Can you say *AWKWARD?* To Waffles, the world is his toy. This includes all of MY toys. Sometimes the lure of the wand toy causes him to cross the no-fly zone, thus resulting in another hiss exchange. Waffles doesn't let it get him down though. He doesn't cower into a corner or run for cover. He just hops away and moves on to the next shiny object. He's got chutzpah and the attention span of a gnat.

Glogirly is home much of the time now, so she's been able to watch Waffles and make sure he doesn't blatantly screw up. When she leaves to get groceries or go to the gym, she puts Waffles back in the Kitten Room. She also puts him back at bedtime. She probably wants to make sure the little monster doesn't attack me in my sleep. For that, I am grateful.

For the most part, this kitten invasion has been turbulence free. The seat belt sign is off and we are now free to walk about the townhouse.

But Waffles, be careful where you step.

15 Week Countdown - Week 4: Hello Ellie!

We thought it would be super fun to relive the arrival of sweet Ellie. She joined our family in September of 2020 and life has never been the same here in the mountain house. She's still a petite little girl, but oh my...these kitten photos of her are SOOO cute. We can't believe she was ever that small. We hope you enjoy her adoption story and all of her kitteny-cuteness!

Hello ELLIE!

WAFFLES: Wait a minute...who are YOU???

ELLIE: I think my name is Ellie. What's your name?

WAFFLES: I'm confused. Ellie???

ELLIE: Hi confused. It's nice to meet you!

WAFFLES: I mean, I'm, I'm Waffles.

ELLIE: You mean like pancakes? You don't smell like pancakes.

WAFFLES: You really don't smell like pancakes.

Surprise!
Last week we promised you a surprise, and boy do we have a BIG one! ...well, actually she's only three pounds. We're so very happy to introduce you to Ellie, the newest member of our family and our blog. We brought Ellie home on Saturday, September 12. Just like our beloved Katie, Miss Ellie is an anniversary kitty. Glogirly and Gloman celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary and decided it was time. Time to bring a new life into our home, time to share our love, and time to turn Waffles' world upside down!

Ellie has only been with us for 8 days now, and it's safe to say we are ALL in love. Ellie was born on a farm in rural Colorado. A very nice lady who lives on the farm, and who adores cats, knew that she wasn't equipped to care for this tiny kitten and her still-a-kitten mother. She contacted a small, local non-profit organization called The Feline Fix in Commerce City, CO.

For more than two decades, The Feline Fix has championed the welfare of cats by providing a wellness clinic, spay/neuter services, a humane TNR program, and adopting & fostering. They are Colorado's leading spay/neuter source for free-roaming "community" cats and a significant provider of affordable spay/neuter services. They have spayed/neutered over 42,000 cats at their clinic, preventing the births of hundreds of thousands of unwanted cats in Denver and its surrounding areas.

Ellie was living in a foster home when we found her online through Petfinder. (The same website we used to find Waffles almost 8 years ago!) Our adoption experience was a unique one given the precautions so many shelters and clinics have in place due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Glogirly filled out her adoption application online, and once it was approved, a Zoom meet-and-greet was set up for Ellie & her foster mom, Glogirly & Gloman, and Nicole, the adoption coordinator from The Feline Fix.

Before the call, Glogirly was having a very hard time imagining adopting a cat without being able to be with them in person. To hold them, talk to them, and play. She had butterflies in her stomach when the Zoom call started. She and Gloman got to see Ellie interact with her foster mom and play with feathers and red dots. Waffles was sleeping on Gloman's lap during the whole call...it was a family affair!

It took all of 15 seconds for Glogirly to fall in love and whisper to Gloman, "She's the one...we have to adopt her!" And the very next day, Glogirly and Gloman drove to The Feline Fix to pick up Ellie and bring her home, to her new forever home.

You're probably wondering where her name came from. Her foster name was Ella. Such a pretty name which totally suits her sweet and feminine face, with that beautiful eyeliner! She's SO tiny and cute that we decided to call her Ellie. Miss Ellie Belly. Gloman calls her his sweet little bean. ...like Jelly Bellys.

One Week Later...
We had no idea how Waffles would take to a new kitten in the family. He has always had a very hard time with new animal smells. In fact, when Katie would go to the vet, Glogiry would have to separate them for a few days after they returned home. Waffles was so sensitive to the unfamiliar smells, it was as if he didn't even recognize Katie.

So we were ready and had our guest room set up for Ellie. Sure enough, there was a lot of hissing, growling, and moaning those first couple of days. Ellie's whole world had changed too. New people, a new environment, and a new cat. While in her foster home, she didn't have any contact with the resident cats in the home. She needed a little time to acclimate and feel safe. We supervised their contact and Glogirly slept in the guest room with Ellie.

Then something amazing and wonderful and beautiful happened.

As Waffles became more comfortable with this tiny new kitten, Ellie became more confident and began exploring the whole house. Pretty soon, when the feather toy came out, both Ellie and Waffles were playing.

Next, they started chasing each other around the house, wrestling like a couple of kids. Waffles has been incredibly gentle with her. It's as if he's aware of his size and strength, and purposely shows Ellie a gentle touch.

Ellie has discovered a new and SUPER fun toy. An orange striped TAIL!

Waffles' extra-long and wiggly tail is just too much of a temptation for her. But when she chases it, or even catches it, Waffles shows patience and compassion.

Soon, Waffles started sleeping in the guest room. In Ellie's Sleepypod. Usually, while she slept on top of the bed.

And then this happened.

Just eight short days, and they've become BFFs.

Ellie has found her place in the world. She's such a happy kitten. A lover, a cuddler, and a gamer. She watches Waffles closely and is quick to copy. Once she saw Waffles sleeping on Gloman's lap, she did the same. Once she saw that Waffles sleeps every night in bed with Glogirly and Gloman, she was was right there, all night long.

And for Waffles, it's a whole new world too. Already he has a relationship with Ellie that he's never had with another animal. Katie was incredibly loving too, but she was much more independent and enjoyed Waffles from a distance. Now he has a chance to experience life up close and purrsonal with another kitty.

Today is a VERY special day at the mountain house. It's Gloman's BIRTHDAY! Each year here on our blog we've tried to do something fun for his big day and our absolute favorite was back in 2016. We were still living in our downtown Minneapolis townhouse. We hope you enjoy our birthday celebration for him. And we apologize for the ear worm you will likely be stuck with once you read it.

A "We Wear Short Shorts" Birthday

WAFFLES: Ok Boss, is this where the H goes?

KATIE: Hurry it up, Waffles. Gloman's coming down the steps any minute. We've got work to do.

WAFFLES: He's going to be SUPER surprised, isn't he! I bet he doesn't even know I can spell Happy Birthday.

KATIE: You can't, Waffles. The sign came already spelled.

WAFFLES: So how many pairs of shorts did we get him for his birthday?

KATIE: Enough that we're going to string them all up on this clothesline. Now where's the end?

WAFFLES: I got it! I got it!

KATIE: Waffles, it's not a toy. It's a clothesline. Now hand it over.

WAFFLES: I got it! I got it!

KATIE: Waffles?!

WAFFLES: Uh, Boss? I thought you said it wasn't a toy.

He Wears Short Shorts ♩♫

So you're probably wondering what's up with all these shorts and what looks like laundry day at the Townhouse, right? Well Gloman REALLY needed some new shorts. And you see, he has this thing about shopping. He hates it. So instead of bringing Gloman to the store, we brought the store to Gloman.

Glogirly went a little crazy and bought a BUNCH of shorts for him to try on. Lots of styles, colors and sizes. This way he could try everything on in the comfort of home ~~in front of the windows for the neighbors to see~~. Once he chooses his favorites, Glogirly will just return the rest.

Though we're getting kind of used to having a 100 foot clothesline strung though the house.

We set all of this up early in the morning on his birthday, before he got out of bed. When he came downstairs from the bedroom... SURPRISE!

15 Week Countdown - Week Two: Snowmageddon

You may have heard about the snowstorm in the Colorado mountains late last week. It was a BIG one! In fact, the most snow we've gotten in one storm since we moved here. And one of the biggest in decades for Colorado. Would you believe there was so much snow the ski resorts actually CLOSED?! It's been crazy town here, that's for sure.

At the mountain house we got over FOUR FEET.

So it only made sense to choose one of our favorite snow conversations between Ellie and Waffles for today's post, "Snowmageddon." And because the snow is just so unbelievable, we're sharing a few new photos from the aftermath below.

ELLIE: Mr. Waffles, should we go check out all that snow and stuff, don't cha think? Mr. Waffles??

ELLIE: Mr. Waffles???

WAFFLES: Sleeping, Ellie. Sleeping.

ELLIE: You're sleeping? Are you sure?

WAFFLES: Barely.

ELLIE: Barely sure or barely sleeping?

ELLIE: The snow, Mr. Waffles. Shouldn't we–

WAFFLES: Go back to sleep, Ellie. The snow will still be there when we wake up.

ELLIE: Promise?

WAFFLES: Zzzzzzz....

2024 Snowmageddon - The Aftermath

The infamous driveway! We had to bring in the professionals to help remove all the snow. There was nowhere to push the snow so we hired a very brave guy with a huge blower attachment to a skid steer. While he was working on the road, an avalanche was triggered just in front of our house. All is ok...but WOW!

No one is going to be walking up to our front door anytime soon!

The trees were gorgeous, though some were weighted down with over a foot of snow on the branches!

This mound is about 7' high.

This is Long's Peak in the way distance. It's the tallest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park and currently covered in white. We can see it from our living room window.

The Internet Challenge

We have a Starlink Satellite on our roof for internet. It's really the only reliable high speed option for where we are located. It's made it trough countless storms and weather events. The dish is even heated so that snow will melt from it. But the 4-6 foot drifts on our roof was no match for it.

Our neighbor Bob came over to assist while Gloman braved it on top of the roof, clearing a path to the dish and unearthing it so it could once again see the sky.

Glogirly hung out in the snow, helping to supervise the operation.

ELLIE: I didn't even know you could count that high, Mr. Waffles.

WAFFLES: I'm not even 15 years old.

ELLIE: So that must mean our blog is REALLY old.

WAFFLES: Glogirly said she wants to say something. Do you think I should let her? I mean she's not a cat. Doesn't have fur. No tail.

ELLIE: But she wears cat ears on her ski helmet. That should count, right?

WAFFLES: Well, ok then....

As our blog enters its 15th year, we’ve decided it’s time to ease gently into retirement. Our blog and most importantly, all the friends and readers we’ve connected with over these years, has been one of the most important and rewarding parts of our lives. It’s hard to find the right words to express what your friendship has meant to us as you’ve welcomed us into your inboxes and your hearts. You've laughed and cried with us. You've always been right there rooting for us, sharing your love along the way.

The Daylight Savings Bank

KATIE: Ok, Glogirly. It's time for breakfast already. 8AM and you're still in bed. Did you forget to turn your alarm clock forward last night? This Daylight Savings stuff is going to starve us to death.

WAFFLES: Boss! We have a daylight savings account? Like at the bank? With an ATM card and everything?

KATIE: Waffles, there's no savings account, no ATM card. Daylight savings means we LOST an hour yesterday.

WAFFLES: Did we bounce a check? Is that why we lost an hour? Are we in trouble with the daylight savings bank?

KATIE: Waffles, there is no bank.

WAFFLES: Oh my COD! Did someone rob it? What about all our daylight savings?

KATIE: Waffles, now listen to me. Forget the banks. There's no such thing as a daylight savings bank–

WAFFLES: But where does everybody keep all their daylight savings? What, are we supposed to keep it under our mattress???

KATIE: Waffles, daylight savings is when we turn the clocks forward by one hour every spring.

WAFFLES: Boss, it's not spring. There's still snow and stuff. This sounds fishy.

KATIE: Whatever. Every year on the second sunday in March we turn the clocks forward by one hour. That's what we did yesterday.

WAFFLES: But if we changed all the clocks, how will we know what time it is? How will we know when it's time for dinner???

KATIE: Oh, we'll know.

Snow Freshies

WAFFLES: Nothing to see here. Other than a handsome mancat hanging on my favorite chair with the snow freshies out the window behind me.

ELLIE: What are snow freshies, Mr. Waffles?

WAFFLES: That's what Glogirly calls it when she races to the ski area after it's been snowing. Powder. Pow-pow. You know, freshies.

ELLIE: This is what I like to do when there's freshies.

We've had a LOT of the white stuff here at the mountain house. And it's been cold enough that it's been sticking around more than usual.

Of course that means you-know-who is doing a lot of you-know what. In fact, today marks Glogirly's 60th day of skiing this season! At this rate she'll have no trouble making her goal of 100 days in the season.

Waffles Waiting

ELLIE: Don't worry, Mr. Waffles. She's probably just out skiing. Gloman will make us dinner.

WAFFLES: Well my stomach can. My tiny, starving, food-deprived stomach can.

About Today's Photos

Whenever Glogirly is out skiing and the time approaches mid-afternoon, Waffles takes to his post to wait for her. He sits on the back of the sofa where he has clear view of the clock AND clear view of the road coming down to the house.

He can see the Jeep come down the big hill, and then he knows Glogirly's home. Once she walks through the door from the garage with her boot bag and jacket, he gives her a very serious talking to!

Rescue Mission: Cat Ears

This is Glogirly with her cat-loving friend, Barbara. They try to get out and ski together as many days as they can each week. Often with their cat ears! Last week though, they had to embark on a rescue mission to hunt for one of Glogirly's ears. She lost it when they were skiing in the trees. The ears attach with strong magnets and one had apparently popped off when she brushed against some branches while skiing between a couple of tightly spaced trees. So they retraced their steps. It took three chairlifts and two black diamond runs to get them to the spot where they entered the trees. Slowly, they repeated their path, following their own ski tracks. And right where the tree branches were hanging low, there was a tiny black speck peeking out of the snow.

Their rescue mission was a success! Glogirly once again had her helmet ears and all was right in the world.

Monday Morning Quarterback Flashback

ELLIE: Hi everybuddy, Ellie here. There was a big football game on our TV yesterday. Truth be told, the snacks were way more fun. Mmmm...Cheetos. In honor of Super Bowl LVIII, whatever LVIII means, we're bringing you one of our MOST favorite football conversations between Katie and Waffles. Are you ready?

Hut, Hut, Hut!!!

WAFFLES: Hey Boss, it's monday morning and I want my quarter back. That Superbowl was a rip off. There was only ONE commercial with a CAT in it. And he wasn't even orange.

KATIE: Waffles, it's QUARTERBACK. Not quarter back.

WAFFLES: That's what I said. I want my quarter back. That's like a whole half of my allowance.

KATIE: Waffles, the quarterback is the guy that throws the football.

WAFFLES: How about a dime? Can I at least get a dime back? A nickel?

KATIE: Waffles, for the last time, he quarterback doesn't have anything to do with money.

WAFFLES: That's not what I heard. I heard he makes LOTS of money. He's probably got TONS of quarters, so I want mine back.

KATIE: That's not how it works.

WAFFLES: Well that's messed up.

KATIE: The quarterback throws the ball at the other players so they can score a touchdown.

WAFFLES: Touch down? You mean like THIS touch down?

KATIE: WHOA, WHOA, WHOA! Flag on the play! Flag on the play! Personal foul!!

WAFFLES: Personal FOWL??? You mean like chicken?

Flashback View from Minneapolis
A few years ago the Super Bowl was held in our hometown of Minneapolis, just a few blocks from our downtown apartment. Gloman was in Minneapolis, though he enjoyed the game from the comfort of his cushy chair.

A few days before the big game when he was driving home from work, he noticed four military aircraft flying in formation over downtown. The photographer in him got to thinking, "hey, I wonder if they're practicing for a flyover during the Super Bowl!"

So when game time rolled around, he was ready. 24 floors above the city, the corner window wide open and a big long lens. He knew he'd have to be quick. And sure enough, immediately after the National Anthem, the planes came zooming by, right over the downtown skyline.

That's the Foshay Tower in the foreground. It's one of the oldest buildings to grace the Minneapolis skyline. It was completed in 1929, the same year Glogirly's mom was born. Modeled after the Washington Monument, it's now registered in the National Register of Historic Places as an example of Art Deco architecture.

Snowmageddon - The Aftermath

Sunday morning we woke up to nearly TWENTY inches of fresh snow!

There's nothing quite as visually spectacular as fresh mountain snow. It's like living in a beautiful snow globe.

And the sunrises...they're incredible.

For Glogirly, this all means lots and lots of skiing.

This is the view from her favorite run, called Muleshoe, at the local ski area. In just a couple of days she's headed to Breckenridge, CO to ski with one of her friends from the Women's Ski Program.

So what about that DRIVEWAY???

This volume of snow means we have to call in the professionals for our driveway.

So far so good...not a single Fed Ex, UPS, or tow truck has spent the night stuck on it. But this is Colorado and there's likely to be plenty more snow yet this season!

The fresh snow often brings out our local deer neighbors. In fact we had a group of seven frolicking up our road. A few of them even laid down in the snow for a rest.

He Must Work Out

ELLIE: Hi everybuddy, Ellie here! Today the deer family came by for a visit. It was getting kind of dark so Glogirly didn't get any pictures of them, but she SWEARS that one of the deer was an old friend of Mr. Waffles. The deer came right up to the window to get a closer look at him and it totally reminded Glogirly of Mr. Two O'Clock, who came by to visit during the pandemic. I wasn't even born yet, but Katie was here to see the whole thing. We thought you might like to read the story again!

WAFFLES: Hey Boss! Your 2:00 is here.

KATIE: My what???

WAFFLES: Your 2:00. He's right here waiting outside the office door. Don't you have a meeting?

KATIE: Uh, NO. Just like everyone else, we're working from home. So if some guy is showing up here for a meeting, he better go home and zoom us, or skype us, or something.

MR. TWO O'CLOCK: Zoom??? Skype??? What the heck does that mean? I'm here for snacks, not some zoomy-skypey thing.

KATIE: Don't feed the interlopers, Waffles.

WAFFLES: I think he likes me, Boss. Did you see his shoes?!

MR. TWO O'CLOCK: Shoes??? Who ARE these clowns?

WAFFLES: Yup, he totally likes me.

Oh, DEER!
We were all hanging out in the office today when all of a sudden, a young deer just walked right up to the door. He was super curious and was completely fascinated with us. He especially had eyes for Waffles. He must have stayed by the door for 30 minutes. If we had opened it, (which we NEVER would) he'd have walked right in.

Hopefully, Mr. Two O'Clock hasn't been given food by any humans, but we're afraid he maybe has considering how brave and tame he seemed to be. We have a very strict do-not-feed-the-wildlife rule here. Except for the hummingbirds. The sweet, sugar-water bar is always open for them.

Glogirly is BACK!

Back from Aspen Snowmass!

After a white-knuckle drive through a blizzard and over snowy mountain passes, Glogirly is home again! She and four friends stayed slope side at Aspen Snowmass. They skied for six days and had a blast. The weather was COOOOOLD! But the snow and conditions were gorgeous. There was even a day with fresh tracks through champagne powder. (That's ski-speak for AMEOWZING)

Though most of the runs Glogirly and her friends skied were blues, there were a couple of black diamonds! One called Showcase and another called Slot.

Glogirly is taking full advantage of the beautiful Colorado mountains this week. She's heading to Aspen Snowmass foreseen days with some of her ski friends. Waffles, Ellie, and Gloman will be holding down the fort at home- Watching their Netflix stories, taking lots of naps, plenty of snacks, you know...the usual.

We know this is a CAT blog and not a ski blog...but we did lead off with a pretty cute Ellie-Waffles photo. LOL! These photos are from our local ski area, Eldora. It's just 25 minutes from home so Glogirly and her friends ski there a LOT.

A Meowy Mountain Christmas

ELLIE: Mr. Waffles, did you know that this is my FOURTH Christmas with you and Glogirly and Gloman?!

WAFFLES: FOUR?! I didn't even know you could count that high, Ellie. So you know what four means, right?

ELLIE: Four? I don't know, Mr. Waffles. I thought it just meant, you know, four.

WAFFLES: It means you're supposed to get me FOUR presents.

ELLIE: But Mr. Waffles, Glogirly's been telling me that it's not about the presents. Or the the treats. Or the toys.

WAFFLES: Well yeah, it's about being with the people and cats you love and stuff. Your family. Your friends. But that doesn't mean there can't be presents.

ELLIE: But isn't me being here with you present enough?

WAFFLES: Well, sure...but I was kind of thinking freeze dried salmon, feathers, wand toys, catnip mice and stuff...

ELLIE: Mr. Waffles, as long as I have you, as long as I have Glogirly and Gloman, well...I have everything.

WAFFLES: That totally sounds like something Katie would have said.

ELLIE: You mean Katie, the Boss? Does that mean I get to be boss now?!

WAFFLES: I love you too, Ellie. But I wouldn't push it.
