Just ran a few errands and turned the radio on while we drove. My mistake. The first problem with Georgia radio stations is that your choices are pretty much limited to wing-nut talk radio; gospel music; country music; and stations that play Elton John songs at least once an hour. But it's the ads that kill you. Three minutes of radio advertising = four stereotypes to make a person scream.

From two different food ads:

Stereotype #1: All women feel guilty when they eat tasty things.

Stereotype #2: Quote: "If you don't worry about your waistline, you aren't a woman!"

Stereotype #3: Mother-in-laws are, by nature, hateful bitches.

Stereotype #4: Only women cook for their families.

Censoring Rammstein

The controversial German band Rammstein is in the news, as Germany rules that the cover of its latest album is too sadomasochistic for public consumption. Rumor is that Switzerland will act next to remove public displays of the album cover.

The album "Liebe ist Für Alle Da" ("Love is For All") by German hard rock group Rammstein - currently at No. 2 on Billboard's European Albums Chart - has been banned from public display in German stores with effect from Nov. 11 on account of its depictions of sadism/masochism, which have been deemed to be harmful to children and young people.

Announcing this ruling, Petra Meier, the deputy president of the Federal Office for the Examination of Media Harmful to Young People, cited the track "Ich tue Dir Weh" ("I Want to Hurt You") as well as the artwork showing guitarist Richard Kruspe with a masked, naked woman on his knees. The Federal Office objected to the fact that the track includes lines such as "Bites, kicks, heavy blows, nails, pincers, blunt saws - Tell me what you want."

The German Federal Office for the Examination of Media Harmful to Young People in Bonn also criticized the single "Pussy," stating that it incites listeners to engage in unprotected sexual intercourse despite the risk of AIDS, although the single was not officially part of the ruling banning the album.

As a result of the ruling, the 11-track Universal album may no longer be advertised or placed on open exhibition in such a way that may be accessed by young people and children under the age of 18 years.

Oh you old dog Old Gold

OK. Forget all my strange fetishes and perversions. This may be the most disturbing thing you ever learn about me: I have this ad hanging in our upstairs guest bathroom.

Upon first seeing this jewel which I dug out of eBay for our personal collection, Will described it thus: "The big poodle's facial expression seems to be saying, 'I'm going to take the bitch home and ball the ass off her.'"

So it is no surprise to discover that Old Gold had a rather unique sense of humor when it came to its other marketing campaigns. Just discovered this set of ads, all published in Esquire magazine in 1937, in which women are encouraged to smoke Old Gold as a means of deterring unwanted advances from creeps. Yeah! Blow Santa away with the stink of your tobacco-infused breath. Puff up a toxic cloud between you and the creepy beach-comber. It's always worked for me.
