Review: GlutenTox Home gluten test kit

For whatever reason, I've never ordered, used or reviewed a gluten detection product in the past. There have been a couple of such products on the market for a while now, but I've never felt the need to use one. However, I was recently offered the chance to receive the newest gluten test kit for free, in exchange for a review of it. Naturally, I accepted the offer! I've always wondered how well such products work, but not enough to fork out good money to find out.

My GlutenTox kit arrived just before Christmas and so far I've only tested one product. I gave quite some thought to what products I would test. I wanted to find something that I know some people are hesitant to try, for whatever reason. I finally decided on the new Snickerdoodles cookies from Trader Joe's. The reality is that GIG certifies the TJ gluten-free items (or at least some of them as shown in their current certified product handbook), but some people don't like the fact that the products carry only a 'g' symbol, which at TJ's denotes only that the product is made without gluten ingredients. There is no mention of 'gluten-free' anywhere on the items.

The packaging of GlutenTox is very professional and the instructions are VERY easy to understand and follow. You basically follow the steps given, in order, and in about 20 minutes, you have your result. You can test for either 20 ppm or for 5 ppm. I chose to use the 20ppm method. As expected, the Snickerdoodles from Trader Joe's (their store brand with the 'g' no gluten ingredients symbol on the box) tested gluten-free. I was not surprised since I enjoy such items from that store on a regular basis.

Since this is the only testing product I've ever used, I can't speak to how it stacks up to similar items. I can only say that using this kit could not be easier and an intelligent six year old (who can read) could use it successfully. It doesn't get much easier than that!

Holiday offerings from Sally's Bakery in Atlanta

Back in November, I posted the holiday offerings from Sally's Bakery in Sandy Springs. I personally ordered the newly reformulated hamburger buns, yeast rolls and sweet potato bread for Thanksgiving. The buns are wonderful and the yeast rolls are like nothing else I've found for gluten-free rolls....they are out-of-this-world delicious! There are many dinner rolls I've tried and enjoyed very much. But something about the new rolls from Sally's takes me back in time - to a simpler way of life. One I find myself longing for during the overly busy holiday season. What an absolute treat!

The sweet potato quick bread is hands down my husband's favorite item from Sally's. I've had very little of the mini loaves, but what I've had has been incredible! Review: Kettle Cuisine gluten-free soups

Ever since I discovered Kettle Cuisine frozen soups, I've been enjoying them and telling everyone I know (gluten eaters included) about how great they are. First and foremost the entire line of soups is gluten-free. There are several flavors that are also dairy-free and some low fat and vegetarian options. Even though I've written about the line many times, I was just recently offered the chance to do a review in exchange for some free soup. The weather in Atlanta was pretty dreadful recently (for us wimpy Southerners), so it was perfect timing that the sample box arrived just in time for winter temps!

I've not tried all the flavors of Kettle Cuisine soups, but of those I've had, the Chicken Chili with White Beans is my absolute favorite! Next in line is the Angus Beef Steak chili with Beans. Each of those are very thick, almost stew-like soups, with strong and perfectly blended flavors. They are both incredibly delicious!

The Three Bean Chili and Southwestern Chicken and Corn Chowder are both extremely tasty soups as well. The latter is quite spicy and the flavors in it are strong, but not overpowering. Most of the soups I eat from Kettle Cuisine contain a serving of vegetables which makes them both delicious and healthy.

One flavor of the soup, Thai Curry Chicken Soup, actually surprised me because I've never liked anything with curry in the name. So, imagine my surprise when I tasted this soup from Kettle Cuisine and thought it was fantastic. Maybe I now like curry...not quite sure what's going on. Maybe the curry flavor is very subtle in this soup. Whatever is going on, I'm so glad I found another great soup from Kettle Cuisine to enjoy! Wonderful Ingles commercial

There is an absolutely fantastic TV commercial that Ingles (grocery chain) is running in our market. In the spot, a mom is talking about her child, who is also in the commercial, having celiac disease and how great it is that they can find gluten-free products at Ingles. I never tire of watching it - it's as uplifting as can be!

Back in October, I ran into the Ingles Dietitian, Leah McGrath, at a gluten-free event in Atlanta. She explained that the mom and child in the commercial are real customers. They are not actors, but normal folks Leah helped find in the community to make the commercial. Isn't that amazing?! That is certainly not common these days - a real family representing themselves in a TV commercial. It's simply wonderful!

Ingles is the only grocer in our market that has done any commercials about gluten-free products and in fact, they've done several to date. The latest installment is either the second or third one they've produced that specifically mentions gluten-free products. I remember the first one I saw had a guy asking where the gluten-free pancake mix was in an Ingles store. I was so stunned by it that I almost fell off my chair!

Kudos to Ingles for knowing the gluten-free consumer is not part of a quickly fading fad. Not only does the Southeast grocer have an extensive and growing list of gluten-free products on shelves and in freezers at many of their stores, they know how important it is to let potential customers know they have them available!

Review: Venice Bakery pizza crusts

I've been enjoying the regular (unseasoned) gluten-free pizza crusts from Venice Bakery for a while now. My local pizza place, Pepperoni's, serves it and the only complaint I have is that there isn't a 14" option available there. Apparently, the crust can be ordered wholesale in larger sizes, but the local distributor carries only the personal size option.

Recently, I was offered a sample package of crusts from Venice Bakery. Naturally, I gladly accepted it! Before the box arrived, I didn't even realize all the items the bakery produces. Inside the package there were plain and seasoned pizza crusts and flatbread crusts in both 5" and 12" sizes. The 5" size makes for a perfect lunch pizza.

I have to say that the seasoned flatbread (used to make pizza) was simply exceptional tasting! The Italian seasonings were spot on and my husband has now declared that his new favorite gluten-free crust is the seasoned flatbread from Venice Bakery! The only difference I noticed between the flatbread and pizza crust is the thickness. The latter is the thinnest of the two. Each option was delicious and the left overs, both the pizza and flatbread, reheated very well!

Venice Bakery ships right to your door and supplies many restaurants with gluten-free crusts. They now offer a gluten-free focaccia as well, though I didn't get to sample it. Based on the other items in the line, I'm assuming that it tastes outstanding as well.

Food banks in need of gluten-free donations

With the number of people getting their food from food banks on the rise and the number of people who need to eat gluten-free also on the rise, there is a real need for more gluten-free food donations at food banks. In fact, it's a huge problem because if you've ever looked at what's on the shelves at food banks, the items are usually heavy on the gluten. From Campbell's soups to Kraft mac-n-cheese - the options are very often items that are off limits to people who can't tolerate gluten.

Check out the article (link below) about the problem and please share it with others if you're so inclined. I saw a news report recently that quoted something like 1 in 6 Americans don't get enough to eat. That means that many people who can't tolerate gluten also don't have enough to eat. Now imagine that when those people try to secure something to eat from a food bank, there is very little being offered that they can safely consume.

North GA resort offers gluten-free options

One of the readers at Celiac-Disease.com was kind enough to let us know that Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa in Young Harris, GA can accommodate gluten-free guests. Since we needed a mini get-away and wanted to enjoy the fall colors north of Atlanta, we decided to stay at the resort just for one night last month. Before booking the room, I confirmed that the dining room could serve gluten-free meals upon request.

We arrived at the sprawling resort mid-afternoon and were checked into a king room with a private balcony. This was actually a surprise since we had not booked that type of room, but the manager upgraded the reservation and comped our night's stay as well! After settling into our cozy room, we checked on our dinner reservations and headed to the expansive veranda off the main lobby to enjoy a glass of wine. The view from there is simply amazing and the fall colors were somewhat subtle this year, but lovely none-the-less!

When we checked in with the hostess for dinner, she informed us that the chef had created special menus for us. Imagine my surprise when I was given a lovely formal printed gluten-free menu that included an appetizer, salad, entree and dessert! And as usual, I requested something that was not listed...lol! Hey, I prefer salmon over filet mignon any day - what can I say?

We started with the gluten-free appetizer listed on the special menu. The prosciutto wrapped shrimp turned out the be one of the best appetizers we've had in a very long time. My perfectly prepared salmon was served over a portebello mushroom and gluten-free penne pasta which at first glance, I thought might not be edible since it was obviously corn pasta. But the chef knows his stuff and it was imported Italian gluten-free pasta. It was delicious with a very light sauce that could not have camouflaged bad gluten-free pasta.

In addition to our menu items, we also enjoyed the salad bar which was fairly basic and included a nice cheese selection and fresh fruit. After our amazing dinner, I enjoyed a lovely baked pear dessert and my husband enjoyed a gluten-filled treat. We watched the sunset over the mountains from our table. The gourmet meal, scenery and friendly staff made for a perfectly lovely evening!

The next morning, we enjoyed the breakfast buffet. While there were no gluten-free bread items to be found, I filled up on an omelet, bacon, cheese and fresh fruit. If I go back, I might take a croissant from Celiac Specialties to round out the buffet options.

There are many spa services and even horseback rides available at Brasstown Valley as well as an indoor/outdoor pool and hot tub. We're not golfers, but the course there looks very nice. We were there for such a short time that we didn't take advantage of anything but the lovely views, the great dining and the relaxing atmosphere. The entire experience was delightful and we hope to return for a longer stay one day!

If you are in the Atlanta area, you probably know that the first gluten-free bakery here was Sally's Bakery in Sandy Springs. The bakery owners are dedicated to creating tasty gluten-free foods that are so good gluten eaters don't suspect they're gluten-free! Many of their creations are dairy-free as well! UPDATE 11-17-11: I picked up my order from Sally's Bakery today and the soft, FRESH hamburger buns demanded we have burgers for dinner. We paired bun-less burgers from Five Guys with Sally's 'new and improved' hamburger buns. Well, believe it or not - the new buns are really improved even though they were pretty tasty before! While I've never had a gluten bun at Five Guys, my husband gets them most of the time and he said without question that the Sally's Bakery buns were much better than the gluten buns he normally gets! Now that is impressive - and surprising!

It's important to note that the buns need to be refreshed after they've been frozen and you must use a low temperature (200-250 degrees) to do this. I like warm buns so even though I could have eaten the very soft buns right out of the bag, I heated them slightly at 250 in the toaster oven. Now we have another thing to be thankful for at this special time of year - delicious gluten-free buns from Sally's Bakery!

Mina's Gluten Free based in the ATL!

Until recently, I was unaware of the company in Stone Mountain that produces gluten/allergen-free mixes called Mina's Purely Divine Gluten Free Mixes. I met Mina at the recent gluten-free vendor fair here and eventually got a chance to test taste some delicious goodies made with her mixes. The product line is fairly unique in that there are only three mixes (A, B and C) which can make everything under the sun that is traditionally made with gluten.

I had the bagels which tasted just like a normal gluten bagel and made for a perfect turkey pesto sandwich for lunch. The other samples included chocolate cake and carrot cake. The chocolate used in the chocolate mix is of high quality which makes for delicious and rich chocolate treats. The carrot cake was also wonderful and after snacking on tiny versions of each cake over several days, I ended up falling in love with the carrot cake! It was always a favorite of mine when I ate gluten and I'd always choose it over chocolate desserts any day.

Mina's mixes are made in a dedicated gluten-free facility and are free of all forms of gluten, soy, corn, dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Currently, the product line can be ordered online, but I hope to see some local stores pick it up soon!

Review: Enjoy Life Foods 'not nuts!' trail mixes

There is not a nut I don't like. I'm a huge fan of nuts - pecans, cashews, macadamias, walnuts - all nuts. I love them. So, when Enjoy Life Foods sent me their trail mixes to review, I didn't even remember until they arrived that all products in the line are allergen free. Meaning that none of them contain nuts of any kind. I figured that I might not enjoy the mixes since they are nut free and the only reason I'd typically eat trail mix is for the nuts.

Salty, sweet and crunchy, our trail mix is so good you won’t even miss the nuts. On the trail or on the go, it's the ideal portable snack. With no peanuts or tree nuts (or any other allergens for that matter), it also makes a great school-safe treat.

gluten-free, dairy-free, peanut-free, tree-nut free, soy free, egg free and casein-free

Once I read the ingredients on each of the two bags, I felt better about my chances of liking the mixes. After all, I quite like dried fruit, sunflower kernels, pumpkin seeds and salt. The first mix I opened was the 'beach bash' and it was excellent - the perfect blend of savory and sweet ingredients! There are six servings in a bag, but this snack is so good one could easily get carried away and down half the bag without thinking about it. To keep from doing that, I put the mix in a small ramekin.

Next up was the 'mountain mambo' mix. It too was delicious and a little extra special in that it contains chocolate chips! Seriously, dried fruit and chocolate - what's not to like?! I'm not really sure which mix I think is the best of the two. They are each extremely tasty and both fairly different. I can see putting some of the trail mix into small baggies to have on hand when dining out in a place that doesn't offer gluten-free appetizers. The resealable pouch package will also travel well and not take up a lot of space in luggage.

If you like the ingredients listed in these two mixes, you're sure to like the combinations of them that Enjoy Life Foods came up with for these delightful products!

Review: Pamela's Product Whenever Bars

Back in July at the Fancy Food Show in DC, I got to sample some of the Whenever Bars from Pamela's Products. I've been meaning to get a review of them up since then, but as my work load increases at my day job, there is less and less time for reviews and blog posts.

Based on the many products from this line that I love, it's no surprise that the bars are very tasty! Since I'm not the biggest fan of bars in general (unless they taste like dessert), I was pleasantly surprised by the Whenever Bars. I tried two flavors - Oat Chocolate Chip Coconut and Oat Raisin Walnut Spice. They are both really good, but the Oat Chocolate Chip Coconut tips the scale as the best of the two in my book. I actually had one of the bars for breakfast on the last day of the DC trip as my airport shuttle pick up was at 5:30 am and breakfast service started at 6 am - ouch!

Pamela's Products uses certified gluten-free oats in the bars, of course. They are pretty high in fiber with 10% of the RDA per bar. The bars are somewhat filling compared to the dessert-type bars I usually have - almost like a meal replacement bar for me anyway. You can learn more about the healthy bars here.

Review: Cedar's brand of hummus

Since I've been gluten-free, I have grown to LOVE hummus! I doubt I even ate any before I was 40, but now I hate to go a day without it. It's one of the most healthy spreads around and with so many flavors to choose from, there is something for everyone!

While checking out the hummus offerings at Whole Foods recently, I came across a couple of flavors from Cedar's that I've not seen before. I picked up both the Spinach Artichoke and Roasted Red Pepper 'hommus' as they call their product. Both are clearly marked gluten-free right on the top of the lid.

The Spinach Artichoke flavor was okay, but not one of my favorites. I love spinach artichoke dip so this was quite surprising. The Roasted Red Pepper hummus was right up my alley. It's bursting with wonderful flavor and is simply delicious!

Cedar's gluten-free items bear the GFCO symbol. The Gluten Free Certification Organization is a division of GIG.

Killer gluten-free cupcakes in Greenville, SC!

When I found out my in-laws were moving there, I was concerned that I might be hard pressed to find many places in the area that would float my gluten-free boat so to speak. While I've only dined out up there once so far, at Larkin's on the River (which was beyond amazing!!!!), there are more gluten-free friendly places than one might think would be the case. I hope to get to try more places in the area eventually!

For now, I can happily share that I had one of the best gluten-free cupcakes I've had at any bakery at The Chocolate Moose in downtown Greenville. While checking out the cute shops on main street, I went into the bakery to inquire about gluten-free offerings just for kicks. I had no idea that the place had gluten-free cupcakes on Tuesdays and Saturdays and was shocked - and tickled - that they had gluten-free chocolate chip cupcakes that day, served with my choice of frosting.

For some odd reason, I chose key lime frosting just because I could. Admittedly, this combination wasn't the best I've had, but both the cake and the frosting were excellent on their own and interesting together! The cupcake was actually so moist and tasty that I started thinking maybe they gave me a gluten treat by mistake. My husband tasted it and thought the same thing. I found out a couple of hours that in fact, the cupcake was 100% gluten-free!

It's super easy to bake your own amazingly delicious gluten-free cupcakes at home, but I find that this treat at bakeries can be hit or miss. The places that do it right make the gluten-free cakes first thing in the morning which might be at 3 am. By the time I have one at 2 pm, the cake part can be dry depending on how and where the cupcakes are stored. Whatever The Chocolate Moose is doing is what every bakery should be doing! All I know about their flour blend is that among other things, it contains millet which is a very healthy grain.

From now on, our first stop in Greenville (if we arrive on Saturday) will be The Chocolate Moose - no doubt!

Awesome chips from Late July!

It seems that Late July introduced a line of gluten-free chips last fall, but I just found them at Natural Foods Warehouse in Duluth last week. Even though there are some flavors of Doritos that are gluten-free, they contain MSG which I avoid in addition to gluten.

The Dude Ranch Organic whole grain chips from Late July are like a Dorito - only better! The flavor is wonderful and the crunch factor is perfect. The multigrain chips are certified gluten-free and they are delicious. I will be trying the other flavors very soon!

To say my new job at Delight Gluten-Free has been nothing short of amazing is an understatement. When I dreamed of building a new career (seemingly out of thin air) in the gluten-free market, I never imagined my path would lead to where it has today. Review: Cookie Dough bars from LUNA Bar

When I was at a food show in July, I was able to sample the Chocolate Peanut Butter bar from LUNA Bar. There are a few new bars in the line that were specifically created to be gluten-free. I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor I had and bought some of the bars when I found them later at Natural Foods Warehouse.

Last weekend I found the Cookie Dough flavor at Target and I must say that this flavor is by far my favorite of the two I've tried so far! It's kind of like a bad-for-you candy bar that is actually pretty good for you. And unlike most candy bards - the LUNA bar is full of fiber! This is my new go-to chocolate/protein bar. I paid $5.49 for a box of six bars which I consider a very good deal. Please note that all bars in this line are NOT gluten-free.

Gluten-free Not a Fad Diet

This interesting article speaks to the fact that the gluten-free diet is not a fad which most of us already know. But the author shares some interesting ideas on why so many people need to avoid gluten these days compared to yesteryear. Additionally, she mentions how much gluten can damage various part of the body. That's something I don't think everyone understands - but everyone should. Eating gluten can cause such a host of issues and while the gut can heal on the gluten-free diet, many other conditions eating gluten can cause don't go away when someone starts the diet. Unfortunately, those conditions are for life.

Blue Moon Pizza open in Buckhead!

Yes - it's true! The newest location of Blue Moon Pizza is now open in the heart of Buckhead. And believe me, it was worth the wait! Be sure to check out the delicious gluten-free pizza being served up at three metro Atlanta locations. The fourth location in the Sandy Springs area is slated to open in October 2011.

If you check out the Buckhead store, please note the parking is directly across the street from the front door in an unmarked lot. Alternatively, there is a Blue Moon parking lot (look for sign) down at the adjacent corner of the building the restaurant is in. Free parking is offered at both lots.

Since I was at the new location of Blue Moon for lunch, I didn't think to ask about the gluten-free beer selection, but the other locations typically stock both Redbridge and Green's. There is a gluten-free menu that explains the company's cross contamination procedures. The staff works very hard to keep their gluten-free pizza truly safe. And in the over two years I've been enjoyed meals there, my pizzas have always been gluten-free indeed!

Finally - delicious gluten-free pizza is available in Buckhead!!!!!!

Atlanta's Newest Whole Foods Market To Feature Our Freshly Baked Breads & More

Whole Foods Merchants Walk store will open its doors on July 27th. Customers will be treated to a beautiful and spacious setting. Dr. Cynthia Rudert to speak at the next AMC meeting

If you have never heard Dr. Rudert speak, you are definitely missing out! Not only does she connect with her audience in ways you can't imagine until you experience it, you'll quickly find out that Dr. Rudert could have a career in stand-up comedy if she wanted to. Yes, Dr. Cynthia Rudert is one of the most entertaining doctors you'll ever encounter.

Customer Appreciation Day at Natural Foods Warehouse

Up front, I must apologize that I'm posting about this great event after the fact. I had no idea it was happening until we walked into the Duluth location on Saturday. It was our last gf food shopping stop of the day. We started at Pure Knead, hit a store that will remain unnamed as they don't deserve any publicity and hit Whole Foods before stopping at NFW. We also made a stop at Yeah! Burger for lunch (review to come on Celiac-Disease.com) and decided to skip Trader Joe's since it's SO busy there on Saturdays. The aisles at TJ's are too small to navigate with a shopping cart when the store isn't very busy and on the weekends it's a nightmare.

There were many vendors and most of them had gluten-free tasting samples. There was some licorice candy that wasn't gluten-free, but I don't recall anything else being sampled that we could not have. It seemed like a great event and I've never seen that many people in that store ever before! Thankfully, after picking up what we needed, we didn't have to wait long in line to pay.

Natural Foods Warehouse is by far my fave place to shop for gluten-free specialty foods in the Atlanta area. No other place really compares in my book due to the winning combination of the products available plus the friendliness of the staff there. Natural Foods Warehouse now has THREE locations so if you're on the north side of town, do yourself a favor and check one of them out!
