Jolly Friday everyone! Before we get to this week's TGIF surprise let's do a quick recap of this last week!

- On Sunday Rikky, Izak, and Chris from Guantanamo Baywatch all got tattoos from Emily of Deadpanzies to honor our beloved Pop Zeus boy, Mikey Hodges (RIP). Then we went to the bowling alley in Eagle Rock to see No Parents and Massenger and White Night and show off our new tattoos.

- On Monday Rikky and Funkle DJ'd the rooftop of the Ace Hotel in downtown LA for Burger Records' monthly DJ night. We drank a lot of fancy cocktails for free.

- On Tuesday night Penelope Gazin came over and painted a new mural on one of the blank walls inside Studio G! Book your band to record at Studio G and you just might get to see it in person!

- On Wednesday we took the mail to the post office and The Memories recorded all day, and Pale Bitch stopped by and recorded a song too.

- Last night, on Thursday, Emily came back over and tattooed Funkle, Mark Tester from Burnt Ones, and our friend Ryan Reidy, and old friend of Mikey's who just moved to LA. A bunch of friends came over, including Arian from Blouse and Eddie (who is hosting the Pitchfork radio thing happening in LA right now) came over with some "shimmering liqueur" and tequila. And Patty Burger came to play Hot Dice. There was some good dice games and everyone had a good time. Also Cory from Austin, TX and the bands Croy & The Boys and Dumb came over with some friends including a cool dog named Pablo who I let chew up my Mom doll.

Now that the recap is done let's get to TGIF!

Happy hello to you Friday y'all!

This past week at Gnar was PURRRFECT! -

- On Tuesday there was a Free Weed show at The Continental bar in Fullerton for Burger Records Taco Tuesday! (And we took the mail to the post office too ;-))
- On Wednesday we went to a free show at The Observatory in Santa Ana and saw No Parents and Kool Keith!
- And last night we had a little party at Studio G because Chris from Guantanamo Baywatch is visiting and we've been raging.

First we are sooooo happy to reissue the debut album by Soft Eyes! Soft Eyes is the new(ish) band from Lukas of the now defunct Burger Records band Mmoss. These songs were recorded in New Hampshire where he lives and the sound is reflected in the music. Check out this video! Gnar is in love.

This time we're teaming up with Burger Records to release this one as a GnarBurger; they're that good. They are touring the US west coast for the first time this September! We are booking it! Grip this ripper hard!!!

And last, but not least ever, is Love Cop's 5th album! Wow! Good work Love Cop! This time we're teaming up with our bromigos Lolipop Records to drop this beauty. Check out the video.

Formed here at Studio G where the three of them dwell, sleeping at night on the leftover flats of soundproofing foam that Bobby Harlow left behind after moving to New Orleans. Influenced by all music but especially Ween, Butthole Surfers, and rap, and Lenny Kravitz. Hey everyone! As many of you know, the mail order system over here as been going through growing pains the last year or so. Relocating from Portland to LA was a long process. Now we are fully set-up and operational and mail orders will be shipped out TWICE (2x) a week! The high-level of orders has made it so that we have had to re-vamp our entire business model. Things are looking streamlined and I (Rikky) finally have a (used) laptop and I can answer all emails so much quicker. We have meetings every Monday and TGIF (Thank Gnar It's Friday) every Friday. We are having a sweet ass Gnar'd Sale this weekend at Studio G, our HQ in LA. There will be quality clothes (from our personal collections; you might recognize some of them), records, tapes, movies, junk, etc. There will also be a BBQ and a Gnar Tapes Showcase featuring Petty Things (Tempe, AZ), Emotional (San Francisco), Michael & The Strange Land (San Francisco, members of Sam Flax), and our idiot boss, Free Weed.

It's gonna be a cool party. The Memories dudes will also be playing a matinee show in the Constellation Room at The Observatory in Santa Ana that same afternoon with AJ Davila & Terror Amor (members of Davila 666) but they'll be back sometime between the BBQ and the showcase, which goes from 6-9.

Also there's a ton of new distro and records and tapes in the shop!!!

This crew is so insanely solid that they even convinced Jimmy "Jerry Rogers" Leslie of White Fang to fill in on drums with Petty Things! Seriously gonna be such a good time. Hello Gnar friends!!!

Writing from our new office in LA! Just signed the papers and we'll be stuck down here for awhile. We just returned from the final White Fang tour of the year. It was great. We supported our friends YACHT all across the USA and also two shows in Canada. Thanks guys. We had so much fun touring this year. Special thanks also to The Coathangers. That was the tour we did right before and that was fun as fuck too.

Next up is The Memories final tour of the year! This time with Andy from Mean Jeans (aka The Hound Of Love) on drums. You can find those dates towards the end of this post.

- Gnar Tapes' special boy Stevie Pohlman, originally from St. Louis, has been a fixture in Portland's dwindling but vital punk scene since he first moved to town with his band Youthbitch near the beginning of the turn of the decade. Popular with both the cardigan-and-drugs art school crowds as well as the leather-and-drugs punk rock scene, that band had a good run that allowed for Stevie to step out and create fuzzy, catchy, lo-fi pop rock without the stubborn punk vibe of his former band. Lending his truly gifted ear to tasty full-band pop nuggets (not unlike The Kinks), Stevie utilizes the less utilized elements of acoustic guitar and stoner casio riffs into his unique blend of bedroom garage pop. Gnar Tapes update from the road

Hey all

We are on tour with The Memories. Our road crew is me (Rikky), Funkle, Kyle "Cinnamon Bear" "Fuzz Puddle" Handley, Izak "Skinny Jesus" "Totally You" "Izzy Slice" Arida, and Ol' Gary Goddard of King Tuff and Personal & The Pizzas. We have been on tour since the 15th of May.

OK so with that being said: WE ARE SUPER DOOPER SORRY FOR ALL MAIL ORDER DELAYS

We have been on tour all year.
It's been super fun but also a lot of work. I've been trying to do my best to get to emails but all I got is an iPhone and it's not as easy as my computer which is sitting in Funkle's brother's place in La Crescenta. I'll get a laptop eventually probably but we had to fix the van transmission a couple weeks ago so I was like fuck guess that'll have to wait. Also my iPhone screen cracked at Skinny Dennis in Brooklyn a week or so ago. But it's still cool.

As an apology and a gift to you all from your patience and patronage,
I promise that we will release a sweet new special edition digital Gnar compilation as soon as I can get to a computer.

As for your mail orders they should all be caught up now and if you don't have your package yet it should be arriving soon. Duffy has been keeping an eye out on that. If you have questions please email Duffy at m00nv01d@yahoo.com

We have some new tapes in the shop but I haven't had a chance to upload previews to soundcloud and shit and I've had shows most nights. But the tapes rule and you should just dive in if you're ready. We have the incredible Zach Phillips of Blanche Blanche Blanche and OSR Tape. Formerly a resident of the Vermont magic town of Brattleboro and now residing in Brooklyn, this impressive new album is hot on the heels of his recent "Recorded In Heaven" cassette on Lillerne Tapes of Chicago. Speaking of Chicago, we have been itching to release something, anything by juke/work freeks Sich Mang ever since we heard their tape on Priority Male a few years back. We finally got the chance and the end result is a mouth watering monster mix sure to help quench any hot summer thirst. Speaking of hot, LA duo Spaceships also have their new tape on Gnar Tapes, and let me tell you, they've been waiting patiently as we have scrambled to keep up with everything. The tape is a pop perfect blend of fuzzy stoner rock and dirty psych. Reminds us a little of our beloved (RIP) The Whines of Portland who were just the best. So that's a good thing.

SUP GNAR TARDS! It's been the busiest year of our lives and we're sorry for all mail order delays or hassles. Everything should be gravy from here on out. The Gnar Tapes office is still in Portland but the White Fang guys (including me, Rikky) all moved to LA to record with Bobby Harlow and to be closer to Burger Records. Since then The Memories have toured with R. Stevie Moore and White Fang toured Europe and the US extensively. Now there is only a week before The Memories hit the highways of the USA to spread the message of lovin' (dates coming soon)! It's getting wacky!!!

We are going to be putting out a batch of tapes every month all year long, with some other surprises tossed in by the buttload. Last month we released Fungi Girls, Pop Zeus, Honey Bucket, and Petty Things - and what releases they were. Fungi Girls toured Texas and Louisiana with White Fang last month and will be playing a few Texas shows with The Memories this month as well. Petty Things just finished a tour of the west coast and they looked really happy when we saw them last night at the Lolipop Records shop show with The Memories. Pop Zeus is up in Portland at Gnarnia writing his new full-length album and partying. And Honey Bucket is enjoying the spring skateboarding weather up in Portland, playing local shows and getting ready to tour the west coast themselves.

This month we are releasing yet another batch of grade-A Gnar - featuring the long-anticipated sophomore album by Totally You (Izak Arida of The Memories and BOOM!), the new mind-warping album by Zach Phillips (of OSR Tapes, Blanche Blanche Blanche, Big French), LA blurry fuzz-burner duo Spaceships, and self proclaimed "wurkstep perverts", Chicago's warehouse beatfreaks Sich Mang (this tape gonna be good for crazy late night summer dance pits). We'll post some previews of these good good ones on the next post (where we'll post The Memories' tour dates and more) :-)

Also one of last month's / this month's surprises is the release of not one, but two new Free Weed cassettes! The first of which is "Bong Pop", the guitar pop sequel to "Free", which features only 100% pure jangle stoner jingles and includes an appearance by none other than the inimitable Colleen Green! Another split release with Burger Records (a real Gnar Burger!) and features the popular BRGR TV theme as a bonus track!

The second of the new Free Weed run is the ridiculous and righteous loosely conceptual album "Single Serving Songs" released on Plastic Response Records of Greenville, South Carolina (who also released the essential Emotional "best of" collection and the exceptional new one by Japan's own The Boys Age - you should grip 'em all - they come with cool pins and posters). Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, this is the first album to be finished by Free Weed since his recent relocation to the City of Angels. Genre-defying, rule-defying; the variety show of freaky sentiments (XBOX, pizza, baked potatoes, etc) and music styles (pop, pop punk, country, alt-rock, rap, etc.) combined with the very concise song lengths make this a very unique and entertaining listening experience. Sure to be quoted by you and your friends.

In other Gnar gnews...

Fat Creeps (whose upcoming tape in June is also being released on vinyl LP by Sophomore Lounge Records) just premiered a teaser video on Tiny Mix Tapes. Check out the article HERE and the video below :-)

The Memories also just released the cassette version of "Touched By An Angel" on Burger Records and Lolipop Records, with digital release and an LP version on Lolipop coming out in the next month or so. CMJ gave it a nice lil SHOUT. (The tape will only be available from Burger, Lolipop, or from the band on their May/June tour.)

We'll do another post this week before The Memories go on tour! At that time we'll also put up some of the new Free Weed tapes, as well as a new "fan favorite" collection of White Fang songs (split released by Burger and Lolipop), and some new pins and such.

HELLO AGAIN

It's been a few weeks since our last post. It was our first time ever in Europe (in any way) and it was a wild time with hard to find wifi and lots of cramped spaces and beer. All your mail orders and mail order problems are being sorted out by Duffy in Portland as I type this. SORRY FOR ALL DELAYED ORDERS. With the recent relocation to LA for White Fang and The Memories there were some growing pains with housekeeping back at the Gnar Tapes office back at Gnarnia in Portland. GNARNIA IS STILL GOING STRONG! Totally You, Pop Zeus, Mope Grooves, and Adam Hess (of Therapists) all live there and there are still hang outs and crazy times to be had. If you're visiting Portland make sure to drop one of us a line!

We got some cool new things happening (like always) and here's a list of things:

(NOTE: this is not the new album for Burger Records recorded by rock legend Bobby Harlow - that comes out on Burger LP 7/15 and it's a balls out rock and roll record sure to change minds everywhere) this is the sequel to last year's "Steady Truckin' For Summer" tape and it's the chillest, most laidback album White Fang has ever done and ever will do. strictly for the stoners. expect Van Halen / Metallica / Offspring / mindfuck madness on 7/15...
