The Midsummer Fire Festival started over the weekend, so it is time for any and all who want a Violet Proto-Drake to once again run all over the old continents for a few hours.

For some older characters, those who saved their rewards from last year, this is an easy holiday. One guy I know only needed to do two achievements, which took him about 5 minutes, to complete the holiday. Of course for us death knights we get to start from scratch. However, there are some tricks we can enjoy along the way.

One of the hardest elements of the holiday is the fire juggling. We have no secret weapon to beat not being able to chase a shadow accurately on the ground, but we do have more margin for error. If you don’t have Improved Unholy Presence already then switch to Unholy Presence for this quest or daily. The 15% run speed boost helps a lot with a last second direction change. Just be careful about overshooting your target, that can happen if you aren’t use to running at that speed regularly.

For the fire jugging achievement you can solo that easily. You’ll want to have 15-20 [Juggling Torch]. You’ll get 5 from completing the initial juggling quest. I logged on an alt, did the quest again and the fire tossing quest, then bought more [Juggling Torch] with my quest rewards. That gave me 20 to work with. You can also share and trade with friends. Once you have enough just find a quiet spot in Dalaran (I did it near Violent Hold), put the torches on a hot key, and spam throw them at your feet. I’d also suggest tracking the achievement, so you can see your progress vs time left.

With honoring and extinguishing the fires you’ll spend most of your time running around Azeroth, so ground mount only. If you don’t have the talent already respec to get On a Pale Horse. The speed boost is worth it. Don’t worry about expense, I made over 600 gold just doing the fires which will more than cover respec costs. And it’ll help with the faster Outland fires and Northrend fires (the later aren’t for achievements but you still get gold and holiday currency).

The riding speed boost is doubly nice for getting away from the other faction after extinguishing their fire, which flags you for PvP. I also used a mounting trick, especially if a lot of Horde were waiting for me at their fire. I’d ride up and click on the fire, which dismounts me. With the quest open but not completed I would then remount, then once mounted I would complete the quest. That would flag me for PvP only after I had mounted, so I could make a get away even if pulled into combat.

I spent the entire weekend in PvP gear and spec. There were a lot of opportunities to take on solo Horde at my fires, or riding around. It also kept me prepared in case I got ganked myself. Given most Horde just wanted to hit the fire and get out our Chains of Ice and Death Grip really made life difficult for them, but amusing for me. I was even able to survive 2.5 of the Horde capital city fires.

Orgrimmar tore me to shreds. I rode in fast and hit the fire, and then looked up to see dozens of Horde players turn to face me. Eep.

Undercity was my “half survived” fire. I made it to the fire and some Horde stopped me from making a quick escape. I engaged, took out two and scared off a third, and made it out of the city. However a warlock’s DoTs did me in just outside.

Thunder Bluff was easier than it should of been. The fire was unguarded. Shaman with their push ability should just camp that spot, send Alliance over the cliff. I made it out with a near death jump off the side of the city, mostly because I had a lot of guard NPCs after me.

Silvermoon City was just fun. I blew in the front door and made it to the fire unchallenged. Several Horde were around, but seemed to ignore me. I got jumped by some guard NPCs and was almost done with them when the Horde decided to take notice. They only came at me one at a time, so I just finished them off as they came. A low level rogue had taken a couple of pot shots at me, but turned and ran when I took down the last level 80. For his efforts he got a Death Grip + Scourge Strike to the face combo.

For those who like the PvP element of this holiday it is also a good time to work on your City Defender achievement. Just hang out at a fire and kill any enemy that come on by. They tend to be solo and they usually just want to hit the fire and try to run out. Even when I took on three Horde at once in Ironforge they were all so concerned about running that I could deal with them one on one. One should really turn to face a melee opponent

I had the chance last weekend to get a lot of PvP in. I love Wintergrasp so I played it every chance it was up. Alterac Valley was the holiday weekend battleground so the new speed runs in there were actually a bit of fun (i.e. Alliance didn’t totally suck… all the time… ) and quite rewarding. I will admit I miss the older style 2+ hour battles, complete with summons elementals to push forward, but with the honor per hour I got this weekend I can’t complain too much.

I ended up being able to complete my PvP set. In doing so I did some more research into death knight PvP numbers and tendencies, through both Elitist Jerks and checking out the top rated death knights in the Arena Tournament. I ended up changing my gear approach a bit from my last posting, going not so much full defensive in the gear selection.

Let’s start with the numbers. On the Arena Tournament server I got some averages from death knights in the top rated teams. For those who don’t know a feature of the Arena Tournament realms is you start at level 80 and you can get whatever top end PvP or PvE gear, gems, and enchants you want at no cost. Before you jump on this realm you should also know there is an additional service fee (i.e. real money) and restrictions by Blizzard, as the realm is designed for series PvP competition only. The beauty for us here is that these players can have any gear item they want, which gives us a great insight.

The average PvP stat numbers were:

• Health: 20,000 to 26,000
• Resillence: 560
• Attack Power: 3,000
• Crit: 20% to 25%
• Hit: 5%
• Spell Penetration: 130

Their gear was very uniformed as well, with only a few exceptions:

Now keep in mind these are arena players, which is different from us battleground/Wintergrasp players. Outside of arenas you are more alone even though you have more team mates (how often do you get debuffs removed by others?) and it isn’t one on one so much as just group clashes. Plus I don’t arena, so I’m not going to get all the Deadly Gladiator gear. But the numbers work out close enough between arena and battlegrounds to still make this information useful. So, I redid my own PvP gear setup to be mostly defensive, but with some offensive items thrown in as well.

This setup gives me a bit more resilience than the arena death knights have, the average health, the low end of the average attack power (not bad for all solo gear), just a bit below average crit (I made it my weakest stat since it is the least valuable), and of course I’m hit capped and have all the spell penetration I need. Playing my last couple of games with this setup I did note my damage was better while my survivability was about the same, even though I had less health and resilience than before.

I went with Titan-forged over Gladiator gear one, because it gets me the hit cap and two, because I can buy them with [Wintergrasp Mark of Honor] and save the honor for Gladiator gear to fill the other slots.

I stuck with [Medallion of the Alliance] to keep my resilience above 560 and because I can’t count on someone else freeing me from crowd control. Escape Artist only works on roots and snares, not polymorphs, sap, mind control, etc. Humans can dump it for a different trinket since Every Man for Himself covers everything.

My PvP Talent Build

I switch this in for my normal DPS build only if I’m going to be doing heavy PvP for a few days. Otherwise my DPS build does fine for the occasional Wintergrasp game.

Unholy PvP – 0/17/54

The point spread is standard and unholy is reported to work better for most than frost for PvP. However I did move a few points around for my personal preferences. The cookie cutter build is actually this 0/17/54 setup. The Scourge Strike glyph can be swapped out if desired.

There is no rotation with this setup. Rotations don’t work in PvP, players just aren’t as cooperative as mobs. Get your diseases on the target, then just go from there.

There was a request made to go over Ulduar weapons for tanking death knights. Since there still are no two-handed tanking specific weapons I figured no one would mind if I went over Ulduar weapons for tanking and DPS.

Ulduar Weapons: 10-Man

[Relentless Edge]

It has agility and haste, not our best stats, and a lower base damage than the other two Ulduar 10-man weapons. It is also a polearm, which some death knights may not have skilled up (you should skill up all weapons, just find a decent green and use it to do dailies). If you already have Kel’Thuzad’s weapon from either 10-man or 25-man then just skip this one.

[Ironsoul]

Now this is more like it, a base damage increase (unless you have [Betrayer of Humanity]) and strength. Armor penetration isn’t my favorite stat, but this weapon is a definite upgrade for many. The only downside is it is a mace, which we start with no skill in. So again skill up your weapons ahead of time. Also keep in mind this is a great feral druid weapon and they can’t use the polearm and axe that also drop in the instance.

[Stormedge]

Virtually the same stats as Ironsoul, but with hit instead of crit. If you don’t need the hit then there isn’t much point in waiting for this over Ironsoul, unless you are being nice to your feral druids.

Ulduar Weapons: 25-Man

[Rune Edge]

An upgrade for everyone, though not the best Ulduar has to offer. Agility and armor penetration are more meh stats, but the stamina makes it a great tanking weapon. Besides, it has been a while since we’ve seen a decent end game two-handed sword.

[Lotrafen, Spear of the Damned]

Great weapon name for a death knight. The stats are similar to Rune Edge, this has less stamina and more armor penetration so less tanking and more DPSing, though either would be a good upgrade for both approaches.

[Worldcarver]

This is the must have weapon in Ulduar. It has the same base damage as the other two drops, but the stats are so much better for us: strength, more stamina, haste, and expertise. The best part is it drops off of one of the early bosses, Ignis the Furnace Master.

The Children’s Week’s achievements lead me to some regular PvP which made me realize I needed to spend some honor points. With the new content patch and arena season I saw the gear selection for us solo PvPers has been changed as well. So as it typical after a content patch I’ve updated my PvP gear wish list from my original PvP gear post.

Hit – 5%
Spell Penetration – 130 to 145
Resilience and Stamina – Top stats but need to be balanced with offensive stats.
Strength – Top damage stat once hit and spell penetration are done.
Crit – Ignore it, other players will have so much resilience stacked it won’t matter much.

Patch 3.1 has been out long enough for it to be re-patched (twice) already, so how goes all of the patch changes for you death knights out there? Here’s what I’ve tried and noted.

Dual Spec

With dual spec I went with a mostly pure DPS build (what can I say, I like my fast mount talent) and a pure tank build. Before the patch I was hovering between the two or a DPS/tank hybrid build. I do play in Winterspring semi-regularly, but the DPS build has typically been good enough for me and I don’t do arena, so a PvP build seemed a distant third.

Popular Talents & Glyphs

On the note of talent builds TalentChic, a site that lists popular talent builds, has updated for patch 3.1. They have also expanded to include popular glyphs on GlyphChic.

These sites don’t track all members of a class on the armory. Instead they identified the more accomplished and active players for each class and then track just them, using their information to conduct a poll of the most popular builds and glyphs. I think you all will recognize many of the top talent builds and glyphs. For those who like to know what others are doing for their in game setups these sites are a great resource.

Argent Tournament

The Argent Tournament has struck me as being anti-death knight in style. Oh we’re not at a disadvantage, the jousting is the same for everyone and the rest is just playing your character for dailies. There are some nice weapons for those death knights who don’t have raid epics already (two-handed and dual wield). What I mean is the fighting style the tournament is advocating. Jousting, really? You expect us to charge Arthas on mounts with pointy sticks? Slight problem with your plan… Death Grip! Now try fighting at close melee range with your big stick. Silly paladins…

Travel Time

This has become my new gripe about the game. With the daily quests I’m doing I’m spending way too much time traveling, especially when I want to get my dailies knocked out quickly if I have limited play time. Currently I’m doing the fishing daily and the Argent Tournament dailies, adding in the jewelcrafting and Argent Crusade dailies if I have time. The fishing daily is obviously a trip, but it is just one so not a big deal. The tournament dailies send me to the far side of Icecrown. That’s fine, but then the sword quest sends me to two different zones in addition to that. If I do my jewelcrafting daily I likely add yet another zone to my travel itinerary. It isn’t a game ender, but it gets annoying when it feels like half your daily time is spent waiting for your flight to end.

Noblegarden

Finally, we have the new and improved Noblegarden. A common comment I’ve heard made about the new egg hunting: “It is like someone sat down and thought, ‘How can we make something more boring than fishing?’” Personally I enjoyed fishing enough to get the Salty title, but I get their point. Once you have all the items you need to actually do the achievements they are more enjoyable than camping eggs. Like the Argent Tournament this isn’t what I’d consider a death knight friendly holiday. Brightly colored eggs, bunnies, flowers… yeah, not so much. I can’t wait for Hallow’s End.

Death knights get to open up even more at level 68. Blood starts really pumping up the damage, Unholy gets even more AoE and some damage help from the blood tree, and Frost is finally a viable leveling build.

Leveling talent builds continue on through Outland pretty much like they were in Ebon Hold. Frost doesn?t become viable until level 67-68 and On a Pale Horse is a huge talent to lose for trying something different, given all of the riding around you?ll be doing on a ground mount.

You may also notice I?m skipping reactionary and cooldown based talents a lot. This is partly because of my own play style, but it also reduces the number of things to keep track of. As a starting out death knight you?ll find you have plenty of things to watch by default as it is.

Blood Leveling – 42/0/17

Rotation: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Blood Strike x2, Death Strike, Death Coil, Death Strike, Blood Strike x4, Death Coil
Swap out Blood Strike for Heart Strike when you get it.

Back before Wrath launched I had posted guides on leveling a new death knight, including leveling talent build suggestions. The patches since then have changed the talent trees so much I figured some updated versions were called for. So I’ll be putting up new posts this week based on those original posts, with suggested talent builds for 55-58, 58-68, and 68-80.

These builds are based on both my own experience leveling up (back in beta and again when Wrath launched) and the very in depth death knight forums on Elitist Jerks.

These talent builds are meant to be suggestions for those looking for a place to start. You may want to rearrange some talent points for abilities you like (or to avoid those you dislike). You can of course do something completely different. Please keep in mind these builds were designed to be efficient in terms of solo level play, so they do not take grouping heavily or tanking into account. They also should not be used for end game play, unless you do nothing but questing.

From level 55 through 58, as you quest around Ebon Hold, you?ll earn talent points as part of your quest rewards. By the time you finish you?ll be level 58 with the appropriate number of talent points.

Blood Leveling – 32/0/17

Rotation: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Blood Strike x2, Death Strike, Death Coil, Death Strike, Blood Strike x4, Death Coil
As you gain levels and talent points you’ll expand to this full rotation.

• Simple rotation
• Best self healing
• Fast mount

Unholy Leveling – 2/0/47

As with the tank builds I posted this information is based heavily on the Elitist Jerks Death Knight forum and are considered to be the top DPS builds in patch 3.1 for all three talent trees. As with any published talent build there are things to keep in mind. These were designed based on providing the best raid DPS and nothing else. They are cookie cutter builds and not everyone likes that. There is nothing wrong with adjusting these builds to suit your own play style or needs, however you should expect your tweaked build to lose DPS as, again, these builds are already tweaked specifically for raid DPS.

Based on both PTR testing and DPS simulators the following builds, all things being equal, are thought to perform best for raid DPS. They are ranked here from top to bottom as best to “worst.”

#1: Unholy Two-Hand: 0/10/61 (best in Ulduar gear)

#2: Unholy Two-Hand: 12/0/59 (best in Tier 7 raid gear)

#3: Blood Two-Hand: 51/2/18

#4: Frost Two-Hand: 13/51/7

Yes, there are no dual wield builds listed. That is because dual wield is once again not a serious competitor with two-handed builds. There are viable dual wield builds, but you will be hurting your raid DPS significantly just for the play style. For more information on dual wield in patch 3.1 check out the Elitist Jerks thread on the topic.

Now let’s go over the details of the four top raid DPS builds listed above.

Unholy Two-Hand DPS: 0/10/61

This build is best after you’ve geared up from Ulduar. Black Ice really shines at that point in boosting your frost and shadow based abilities. For patch day if you want an unholy DPS build you’ll want to start with 12/0/59, list below.

With the glyphs Dark Death (new to patch 3.1) and Ghoul are staples for unholy DPS. Scourge Strike could be swapped out, but a lot of members of the death knight community like it. The new [Glyph of Disease] looks appealing, use Pestilence twice over Blood Strike and save on Icy Touch and Plague Strike, but truth is you lose DPS doing that. Scourge Strike has four chances to proc in a full rotation so it can make your rotation more flexible and even fun, however the rotation isn’t dependent on it so if it doesn’t proc it isn’t a big deal. Still, in the end, personal choice dictates that particular glyph slot more than anything else.

Rotation: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Scourge Strike, Blood Strike x2, Runic Dump, Scourge Strike x3, Runic Dump

Apply Frost Fever, apply Blood Plague, big hit, blood rune to death rune, blood rune to death rune again, use up runic power. Then big hit, big hit, another big hit, and again use up runic power and start over. If Glyph of Scourge Strike went off feel free to use a SS over the opening IT and PS, but as always 100% disease uptime rules all.

Sigils: [Sigil of Awareness] or [Sigil of Arthritic Binding]

You just can’t beat increased Scourge Strikes with an unholy build. There has been mention of the epic sigils from Naxxrama becoming available via venders in patch 3.1 and the blue quality sigils are all available for an hour of solo PvP play in Grizzly Hills.

Runeforging: Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Yes it got nerfed, but not too badly and blood and unholy just don’t work well with any of the other offensive runes.

Unholy Two-Hand DPS: 12/0/59

This is the unholy DPS build you want to go with on patch day. It gives you better single target damage and aggro management while your tanks are learning the new content. Once you’ve geared up from Ulduar you can then switch over to the 0/10/61 build without any change to your glyphs or rotation.

Rotation, Sigils, and Runeforging are all the same as Unholy 0/10/61 build listed above.

Blood Two-Hand DPS: 51/2/18

This blood build competes very well with the unholy builds for raid DPS. In most testing it is just under the unholy builds, so in practice it is very possible a blood death knight could out perform an unholy death knight. As before blood provides some nice survivability features, certainly nothing to ignore in the early days of the patch and learning new raid content.

The Death Strike glyph along with talents and class changes makes Death Strike a hard hitter worthy of replacing Obliterate, especially if the extra survivability matters to you.

Rotation: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Heart Strike x2, Death Strike, Runic Dump, Death Strike, Heart Strike x4, Runic Dump

Apply Frost Fever, apply Blood Plague, good hit, good hit, big hit, then use up runic power (but the more you keep the bigger your upcoming DS is going to be, just use up enough to not waste what you are about to generate). Next a big hit, good hit, good hit, good hit, still spamming the good hit, and again use up your runic power.

Sigils: [Sigil of Haunted Dreams], [Sigil of Awareness], or [Sigil of the Frozen Conscience]

Up your primary attack, Heart Strike if you have the epic. Sigil of Awareness is being changed to include Death Strike, so it is also viable. Otherwise boosting Icy Touch is your next best option. There has been mention of the epic sigils from Naxxrama becoming available via venders in patch 3.1 and the blue quality sigils are all available for an hour of solo PvP play in Grizzly Hills.

Runeforging: Rune of the Fallen Crusader

Yes it got nerfed, but not too badly and blood and unholy just don’t work well with any of the other offensive runes.

Frost Two-Hand DPS: 13/51/7

Frost DPS comes in last of the trees, but that shouldn’t be a surprise to the loyal fans. On the bright side the patch changes should have increased your DPS output with frost by about 10%. As before Obliterate beats Howling Blast except in AoE situations.

Rotation: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Obliterate, Blood Strike x2, Frost Strike, Obliterate, Frost Strike, Obliterate x2, Frost Strike

Apply Frost Fever, apply Blood Plague, big hit, blood rune to death rune, blood rune to death rune again, Frost Strike specifically to use up runic power. Next comes a big hit, another runic power dump, then big hit, big hit, and once again a runic power dump.

Sigils: [Sigil of Awareness] or [Sigil of the Frozen Conscience]

Assuming you aren’t going crazy with Howling Blast then upping Obliterate is your best bet. Otherwise boost your Icy Touch. There has been mention of the epic sigils from Naxxrama becoming available via venders in patch 3.1 and the blue quality sigils are all available for an hour of solo PvP play in Grizzly Hills.

Runeforging: Rune of Razorice
