As the current economic climate forces many of us to tighten our purse strings, voters in Germany are starting to take the green option seriously - and so should we.

Germany's Green Party was founded three decades ago and has long been associated with the long hair and sandal-wearing movement which, until now, turned many potential voters off.

"People used to say 'we can afford the Greens when times are good, but when it's a matter of jobs and growth, it's not the Greens you need'," co-party leader Claudia Roth told Reuters.

Now that would appear to be changing. In an era in which Europe is paying the price for the excesses of recent years, many are realizing we can no longer live without limits.

"We have shown that economics and ecology don't contradict each other," says Roth.

Even Angela Merkel is an apparent convert to the "greening of German politics," says Reuters; since the disaster of Fukushima, she is in a hurry to shut down the countries' atomic power plants.

Pulling their weight in the German parliament, however, could depend on the outcome of the next general election in 2013. If the left-of-middle Social Democratic Party (SDP) is re-elected, an alliance would be their most likely option.

The SDP previously spurned such an alliance, though they may think twice second time round. Latest polls put Angela Merkel's leading CDU on 32% and the Socialists on second place with 30%. The popularity of Germany's Green party has rocketed in the past year, from 10.7% in 2009 to between 15-20% in the latest opinion polls.

Doing our bit

While politicians dilly-dally about whether to jump on the green bandwagon, there are plenty of actions we can take to as individuals by just staying informed. The number of organizations and websites now dedicated to saving the planet - and often our pennies into the bargain - is now almost infinite.

Living according to a green ethic, however, takes effort and implies more than just a trip to the local bottle bank.

In a throwaway society, several websites, such as recyclethis.co.uk, offer advice on how to re-use (not just recycle) materials, from used contact lenses to make-up sponges.

Another important aspect of being green involves being an ethical consumer. How many products and brands do we buy without questioning how it made it onto the supermarket shelf?

It is worth investigating, though be prepared for some disturbing discoveries about some of your favourite products. One of the UK's leading brands of tea scores a pitiful 1 out of 20 on ethiscore.org's ethical consumer guide, guilty on several counts of unethical trading, including 'unsustainable water usage'; 'workers' rights violations' and 'animal testing of non-medical products', to name just a handful.

Being green can have its upside too, though you may have to seriously rethink your consumer habits. The world is being rapidly stripped of its resources partly due to a penchant for cheap goods that don't last.

If you transform your wardrobe with the frequency of the changing seasons, think again: spend a bit more on well-made, quality items that will last you years. People Tree, Edun and Loomstate make fashionable, environmentally-friendly clothes and have excellent credentials in terms of ethical trading.

If you really are so fickle you need a frequent fashion revamp, you could consider ‘swishing'. Described as a 'global phenomenon' that began in the UK, swishing parties are now taking place in the US, China, South Africa and Brazil.

Basically, the rules are as follows: Everyone brings at least one item of quality clothing they no longer want and has half an hour to browse the offerings before swishing commences. When swishing does begin, participants attempt to take whatever they've had their eyes on (scratching, spitting or fighting strictly forbidden)!

A little goes a long way

How many times have we heard that making small changes can make a huge difference? But just what should they be? Here are a few suggestions for how to start:

Instead of buying expensive detergents, investing in Ecoballs could save you money and cut down on water usage. One kit of Ecoballs, worth somewhere in the vicinity of €40 (available to buy on-line even at Amazon!) can last you up to 1,000 washes.

Green Swiss Firms Eye Lucrative Chinese GREEN Market

An increasing number of Swiss companies specialised in environmentally-friendly technology are seeking access to the vast and lucrative Chinese market.

The Chinese government is investing billions to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources such as water, wind and solar power.

A truly European project, more eco-friendly and sustainable than projects in Europe itself, is being built in the middle of the dry wasteland of northern China.

But the driving force behind it is not Switzerland or even the European Union.

“It is a project for the development of a new urban neighbourhood in the city of Ordos, an administrative centre of Inner Mongolia in northern China,” said Diego Salmeron, chief executive of LEP Consultants, a spin-off from Zurich’s Federal Institute of Technology.

It is an ambitious venture to be completed in Chinese style. A housing project with European architecture for about 45,000 residents is to be developed in a semi-desert region.

“There will be French, English, Italian, German and of course also Swiss parts,” said Salmeron.

He has negotiated a contract with local Chinese partner over the past few months. “The partner asked me to come up with a preliminary study for the zoning and town planning.”

The aim is to build an environmentally sustainable neighbourhood.

“We have in mind the Swiss Minergie standard [low energy consumption] or to build solar panels and windmills in the German quarter,” Salmeron added.

Huge market

LEP Consultants is one of many Swiss companies eying the Chinese market. An estimated 150 Swiss cleantech firms are currently active in China.

“China is an enormous market and the need for development in the cleantech sector is huge,” said Rolf Häner, managing director of Cleantech Switzerland’s the export platform.

He adds that the Chinese government pledged investments to the tune of SFr150 billion ($169.4 billion) to promote green technology.

China is the leading producer of solar energy, ahead of the United States. Six out of ten major producers of photovoltaic cells are also Chinese, according to the 2010 list by the market research agency Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Nevertheless, the Chinese economy is still highly dependent on coal for the time being. As a result many of its cities and rivers are among the worst polluted in the world and the air quality is poor.

“China requires the whole range of products that the Swiss cleantech industry can offer,” said Häner.

Energy efficiency

To “improve the purification and the treatment of gas” the management of a Chinese incinerator is planning a partnership with a Swiss firm, according to Cleantech Switzerland.

I wanted to share a few more ideas I had on the small, simple things we can all do to fill our life with a little more positive and joyful energy.

I use to suffer a great deal from lack of energy and positive drive. My busy working lifestyle seemed to leave me with very little energy and I quite often went to bed exhausted both mentally and physically. My mind and body were in a constant state of deflation; I never could seem to find the time to recharge.

And it is true; leading a busy lifestyle can quite often sap our bodies and minds of precious energy and leave us feeling discouraged, tired and irritable. Often it is a catch 22 sort of situation, where the everyday necessities pile up, take over and demand valuable time and energy from us, stealing our oomph so by the end of the day all we want to do is crash.

But everyday life is filled with opportunities to energise and recharge our mind and body to face the day with a little more good cheer and get-up-and-go!

It is sometimes not easy; but with a few changes and by adopting some new habits I was able to find a little more energy, both in my mind and body, to face the day with positive cheer and overcome the ever present exhaustion. And you know what; it was kind of like a flow on effect; the more energy I found the more I could do to sustain and regain more positive drive for my life.

If you find it may be helpful in your life I encourage you to try the following, adapt them where you can in your own lifestyle and see if they might add a little extra pizzazz and verve for life!!

1. Eat well and Exercise

Oh, I know, how many times have we heard this before? But you know what it is so very fundamental to living a happy, healthy, positive and joyful life. Why Go Green?

The problem, I imagine, that a lot of business and home owners have about getting "green certified" is that one of the big promises - cash savings - seems immediately challenged by the initial investment required. Add to that the time and hassle of switching out things like all your lights, or your air conditioning, or certain parts of your plumbing, and it just doesn't seem to be worth it.

The thing is, the savings are meant to be long-term. Green certification is more an investment for future savings than an immediate way to turn a profit. And, as with any investment, it involves spending initial capital in hopes of long-term benefits. The good news is, while many investments sometimes seem like more of a long-term gamble than a delayed but profit-generating return on the money spent, the returns of going green are pretty much guaranteed from the start. The equations are all done, the variables determined; going green isn't about betting on finding the right math, but about plugging the most advantageous numbers into the equation.

The way it works is that there are technologies - LED lights, water-saving bathroom accessories, and so on - that work as well as or better than more common counterparts, but use up less energy or other resources. The reduction in resources used is not only better for the environment, but it also means you are paying less, month to month, than you would for your normal expenditures. In many cases, they also require less frequent replacements as well. The problem is that getting the new technology installed means buying the new devices, which can be significantly more expensive than the normal items. A single LED light bulb, for example, could quite easily cost in the vicinity of $50.00, but could easily last for fifty times as long as a normal bulb, and use around a tenth the energy. That's where the savings comes in; take the monthly cost of the electricity it takes to light your business, and reduce it by around 90%, while simultaneously knowing you won't have to purchase and change out lights again for somewhere around a decade or two.

The value of going green is clear if you look at the numbers and are willing to wait a year or two for the savings to overcome the initial investment. Naturally, the more energy you use regularly, the greater the savings - but also, the higher the initial cost. It might, thus, not be economically feasible for every business to make the immediate switch to green energy. However, if you've been thinking of investing some money into your business, becoming certified green is an option with returns that can be easily calculated based on your current energy usage.

A motorized bicycle consists of a drive system that can be incorporated easily and without much difficulty onto a bicycle in a manner that enable the bicycle to pedal in a relaxed mode without increasing force required to pedal the bicycle. The motorized bicycle consists of a wheel on which a drive gear is mounted, which in turn is linked to the drive gear, and a drive device attached to the driven gear. Early designs typically consist of chain or gear technologies which were driven by a motor and which were in permanent contact with the bicycle's drive sprocket along with the pedals. While these motorized driving technologies did supply a secondary power to a bicycle, they have their own disadvantages as well. Like, the motor and its drive system were generally in direct contact with the pedals all the times, which need the rider to drive the motor during pedaling. The use of the motor importantly enhanced the power required to pedal the bicycle. In addition, the drive technologies of these early motorized bicycles were tough to incorporate into existing bicycles as they need complicated driving facilities which required wide-spanning modifications of the bicycles onto which they were fixed. As a result, these technologies could not be used on multi-speed bicycles.

When it's hotter in the area, it takes significantly more energy to help cool everything off. While going with less air conditioning is an option, it's difficult to completely turn it off in some of the warmer areas of the country. There are some changes that could help save energy by reducing heat absorption.

What if things that were darker in color were changed to lighter colors like white?

If parts of the city were built or changed to lighter colors like roofs on buildings or possibly even streets, there would be more heat reflection versus absorption. This means that it would be slightly cooler in the city meaning that across the whole area it would take a bit less energy to help cool the buildings and would in general feel quite a bit better outside on the warmer months of the year.

While dark colors typically are part of the metropolitan landscape, lighter colors could be easily used to help combat heat. It's just a change in the way that certain colors are applied to the city.

What about colder areas of the country?

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — Kuantan residents campaigning against the rare earth refinery being built in their backyard hit back at Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob today, challenging the Pahang mentri besar to lead their fight to halt the construction of the plant.

“We are not against the government but we are wondering if the government is against us,” said Vincent Jiam, chairman of the local residents group that calls itself Save Malaysia, Stop Lynas.

“If he (the Pahang mentri besar) himself wants to lead us in the petition against Lynas, then we will all sign up with him,” he added.

Adnan said yesterday that the state government had given Australian miner Lynas Corp approval to construct the plant after a series of strict screening processes, and gave an assurance that it would not produce radiation once it begins operations in September.

“The proposed construction of the plant was politicised by certain quarters, masterminded by opposition parties,” he said.

Two years after the green light was given to build the plant in the Gebeng industrial zone, rising fears over the potential radiation hazard have forced the Pahang government into holding a series of townhall talks later this month to safeguard the RM700 million project.

The current radiation crisis in Japan after a nuclear power plant was crippled by the recent tsunami has compounded worries that the Lynas plant will be a repeat of Malaysia’s last rare earth project which has been blamed for causing at least eight leukaemia cases, with seven resulting in death.

The plant in Bukit Merah, Perak, operated by Mitsubishi Chemicals from 1985 to 1992, is still carrying out a massive RM300 million clean-up, nearly two decades after being shuttered.

Jiam also accused the mentri besar of dragging politics into the matter when, in fact, the protesters were willing to work with anyone to achieve their target of stopping the project.

“But we know he is not willing to help us stop the plant,” he said.

The group’s communications manager, Jonathan Wong, said both the state and federal governments were not willing to engage the local residents.

“So then who is going to help us? We go to Fuziah Salleh because she is our MP,” he said, referring to the PKR vice-president.

“If anyone wants to politicise the issue, then please play your ball game elsewhere,” Wong added.

Lynas has repeatedly stressed that its rare earths ore is obtained from its mine in Mount Weld, Australia and contains only trace amounts of the radioactive element thorium which, it said, is roughly 50 times less than those found in Bukit Merah.

It expects to receive a preliminary operating licence from the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) before September to begin refining the rare earth metals.

The company hopes the plant will bring in RM8 billion a year from 2013 based on current prices for the refined metals that are crucial to the manufacture of high-technology products such as smartphones, hybrid cars and bombs. - Malaysian Insider
