Second verse, same as the first. Colorado cannot catch a break. After pushing Cal into double overtime and losing, the Buffs also took the 25th ranked UCLA Bruins into double overtime last week. And lost again. What is the one ingredient that is missing from a winning formula for CU? The answer = Luck

The uphill battle continues as Colorado takes on the Washington Huskies this weekend at home. Kickoff is an early 10:00 AM start. The game will be televised nationally on Pac-12 Networks. This is the earliest kickoff in seven years when Colorado beat Nebraska 65-51 back in 2007 during a 10:00 AM kickoff.

Washington is coming off a 24-10 home loses against #14 Arizona State. No doubt they will be looking for revenge. The Huskies need two more wins to be bowl eligible and they will be gunning for Colorado to be one of those wins.

Interesting fact: Washington leads the nation in defensive touchdowns with six. CU has not had a non-offensive touchdown in a game yet this season. This includes themselves but also anyone they have played against.

Once again the Buffaloes are underdogs at home. I have no idea what to expect anymore except more of the same. Coach MacIntyre has his hands full. Will Colorado win another game this season? Only time will tell.

Let's watch and see if CU can force another double overtime contest. Only this time with the Buffs prevailing on top.

Buffs got slaughtered at USC last weekend which was expected. A great day, an awesome tailgate, an awful game. It only gets worse from here as CU continues its uphill climb against the powerhouses of the Pac-12.

I would like to give kudos to all the friends, brothers and fans who made it to the game last weekend. Great to see everybody and everyone. Thank you for your pride.

Colorado faces off against the next topped ranked opponent which the the 25th ranked Bruins of UCLA. At least this time the game is at home. Small consolation but hopefully CU can make a game of it. The Bruins are favored by 7 points.

As mentioned in the last post, you have to take advantage of the match-ups where you have a chance. Colorado has not done that. And now it gets worse. CU climbs the Pac-12 mountain as they enter the heavyweight section of their schedule. They might not have a chance for another W until they face the Utes of Utah at the end of the season. And even that is no guarantee

The losses are getting closer but no easier to stomach for the Colorado Buffaloes. Seven days after a three-point, double-overtime defeat at California, the Buffs left Folsom Field a five-point loser to Oregon State – and still searching for some way to end the near misses.

CU, which lost 44-17 last season in Corvallis, Ore., spotted OSU 14 first-quarter points but rallied to take a 21-20 halftime lead. But the Buffs, held pointless in the third quarter, were outscored 16-10 in the final half. With 2:08 remaining, the Buffs appeared in prime position for a game-winning drive but problems in execution and a possible missed pass interference penalty on Spruce squelched that opportunity. With CU out of timeouts, OSU (4-1, 1-1) had only 1:43 to kill before leaving with the win.

Coach Mac continues to have epileptic seizures on the sidelines and after the game. I admire his passion. I just hope his antics are seen as a positive for the program and not a detriment or negative to the brand that is Colorado football. (By the by, Coach Mike MacIntyre was fined $10,000 by the conference after yelling at the officials while chasing them off the field following the loss to the Beavers).

Onto the next.

Colorado takes on the Trojans of USC at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Kick-off is at 3:00 PM PDT. The came will be televised on Pac-12 Networks. Colorado is seeking its second Pac-12 win in 21 tries. USC, on the other hand, wants to stay unbeaten against Colorado. USC is 8-0 in the all-time series with a 277-76 scoring margin, and has averaged 46.3 points in three meetings since Colorado joined the Pac-12. The Trojans won the last meeting in Los Angeles, 50-6 in 2012 and claimed a 47-29 victory in Boulder last season.

The Buffaloes have lost nine straight conference road games and are 2-13 in league road games since joining the Pac-12. They're also 1-19 in their last 20 conference games overall.

Glimmer of hope: Colorado's offense is much improved with 476.7 yards per game -- seventh in the Pac-12 after finishing last with 369.9 in 2013. The Buffaloes' 320.3 passing yards per game would be a school record, though quarterback Sefo Liufau's 6.6 yards per attempt ranks last in the conference.

Close but no cigar.

The Buffs battled the Bears vigorously into double overtime last week but fell three points short. It was a nail biter that was thrilling and exciting except with the outcome not going our way. The general consensus is Colorado is improving and can compete in the Pac-12. But we need a few breaks to go our way. Specifically a field goal kicker who can actually make a field goal and not go 0-3 on attempts. The difference maker. That and the two negated touchdowns by CU does not help either.

Did anyone else notice Coach Mac on the sidelines after the failed 4th and goal in the second overtime? He was beside himself.

So Colorado is still slogging through another season where it's hard to tell if the program is improved or still in the basement. You have to take advantage of the matchups where you have a chance. OSU offers that opportunity this weekend. Colorado needs to capitalize before it faces murders row with the likes of USC, UCLA, Arizona and Oregon.

Let's get it on.

The University of Colorado Buffaloes take on the Oregon State Beavers this Saturday, 10/4 at Folsom Field. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM PDT. The game will be televised nationally on Pac-12 network.

Oregon State is the last of the other 11 Pac-12 schools to visit Boulder since the Buffs joined the league on July 1, 2011. The Beavers last played at Folsom Field in 1988.

Nelson Spruce is on fire. He is a man possessed. While he is no Paul Richardson, Spruce quietly leads the nation in receptions (56), receiving yards (697) and touchdown catches (10). He is a contender for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. Go Spruce.

The Buffs line up once again across from Sean Mannion. The OSU quarterback threw an Oregon State record six touchdown passes in a 44-17 pasting of the Buffs last seaon, in which he was sacked only twice in 52 pass attempts. He comes into the game high among the Pac-12 leaders in passing. The Buffs will have to find a way to pressure and slow down their prolific quarterback

Oregon State dropped a 35-10 decision at Southern California last Saturday night. So they will be looking to rebound. As are the Buffs.

Following the Oregon State game, the Buffs will have their first of two bye weeks as CU is idle on Oct. 11. Afterwards CU will be in SoCal at Memorial Coliseum. against the Trojans of USC. Come one come all. I will be there.

Holy cow!

Been a long time since the blog was updated. Thank you everyone for your patience. After some technical difficulties the Buff Newsletter is going back to digital from analog. Enjoy!

What to say? After four games the Buffs are surprisingly at the .500 mark. Awful opening loss against CSU. Ugly win over UMass. Admirable loss against ASU. And then a given over Hawaii. Which wasn't that easy as CU relied on first half production to ride out the eventual win.

Onto the next.

The Golden Colorado Buffaloes kick-off again the Golden Bears at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, 9/27 at 1:00 PM PDT. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. Cal leads the all-time series 4-3.

The Bears will try to recover from a devastating loss again Arizona last week. At halftime California held a commanding 28-6 lead only to let that lead slip away in the fourth quarter when they allowed 36 points, including a miracle touchdown pass from Anu Solomon to Austin Hill on the last play of the game. The loss was the first of the season for California, which is now 2-1.

Last season in Boulder the Buffs ran away with a 41-24 victory. But this Bears team is nothing like last year's squad.

Cal has played extremely well in 11 quarters this season. However, the final frame against Arizona is a blemish that will be tough to get past. Colorado has also improved from last season, but it still lacks the offensive firepower to keep up with the Golden Bears.

It will be a slugfest, but in the end California is favored to win. Prediction: California 36, Colorado 26

Let's hope I am wrong.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Well, the 2012 college football season is coming to a close and it can't come fast enough for the Buffs. This year has been disastrous for Colorado Football. In fact, this is the first season that I've known that has been worse than the season prior. Whenever there has been a bad year for Colorado the Buffs have rebounded the next season to improve. Not this year. Last year CU went 3-10. It was a murderous schedule with an extra game (13 total) and no byes. Now the best Colorado can do is win two games. They would have had to won last week against Washington to match last year's 3-win season, and we all know how that went.

Colorado held it close against the Huskies for the first half but then UW broke open a tight 7-0 game with 17 3rd quarter points. The end result being a blow-out 3-38 home loss.

Last chance.

The Colorado Buffaloes finish off the 2012 season at Folsom Field on Friday, Nov. 23, hosting the Utah Utes (4-7, 2-6 Pac-12). Kickoff is at 12 noon. The game will be televised on FX Networks.

Utah crosses over the divide to play in Boulder for the first time since 1961. This the first time CU is closing a season with two straight home games since 1990.

Both teams are out of postseason contention so this game is irrelevant to the national landscape. It’s all for pride. Speaking of, Colorado has not gone winless at home since 1920. The Buffs are 0-5 at home this season and thus this is CU’s last chance get a win at Folsom. So pride, respect and a continuous streak are on the line. The only other times CU has not won a game at home was in 1890 and 1891 (0-2 each year). Colorado has never gone without at least one win at Folsom Field since it opened in 1924. So, yeah, it’s a big game for the Buffs.

CU’s 17-14 win over Utah last year in Salt Lake City cost the Utes the Pac-12 South Division crown. I’m sure they’ll be looking for payback.

QB Nick Hirschman was cleared to resume practice this week and will start against Utah (he suffered a concussion at Arizona and missed the Washington game). So there you go. The fate of Colorado streak is in the hands of this guy. Not very reassuring.

The Buffs bring a 51-12 record against unranked teams since 1985 into this game. Sounds promising but they will have to play big to close out the year with some pride.

Here’s hoping we end the year with a win.

The Buff Newsletter took a rare in-season hiatus last week due to an unprecedented event. Namely my turning 40 years of age. (Unbelievable). There simply wasn't the opportunity to get the newsletter out with all that I had going on. I apologize.

No matter. The Buffs stunk up the field last weekend against Arizona as expected. (Although we beat Arizona last year). Arizona rebounded from a 66-10 spanking by UCLA the weekend before to route Colorado 56-31. The Buffs were actually holding their own at first and had the lead after the first quarter but it went all downhill from there. CU had the ball for nearly 42 minutes of game time yet still lost by 25 points.

God it's a long season. On to the next.

Colorado plays its final two games of the season at home facing the Washington Huskies (6-4) this Saturday at Folsom Field. Kick off is at 10:30 AM PST. The fame will be televised on FX Network.

Washington, by the way, is ranked 25th in the BCS standings. (Although not ranked in any poll. Odd). Their last two games of the season are us and rival Washington State which between the two have won a combined 3 games total all season. Sad.

Colorado has lost six straight games by at least 25 points with an average of 52.8 points a game during this current losing streak. Yikes. Needless to say Washington is favored.

Like a train wreck that you just can't look away from I will watch.

Oh boy it's bad.

Can you say ugly? Colorado is coming off a 70-14 loss at No. 2 Oregon. The Ducks were as advertised if not better accumulating 617 yards of offense; 447 in the first half while racing to a 56-0 halftime lead matching CU’s largest halftime deficit in its history. (Colorado trailed by the same score at UCLA in 1980).*

Silver lining: You think 56-0 at halftime is bad? At least we're not New Mexico. Oregon hung 59 points against the Lobos back in 2010. So, you know, we've got that going for us.

On with the show.

The Colorado Buffaloes return home for the first of three games in November to close out the 2012 season. The face 15th ranked Stanford (6-2, 4-1 Pac-12) on Saturday. Kickoff is at 11:00 PDT. The game will be televised on FX Network.

This will be the first time the Cardinals have visited Folsom Field since 1990. Stanford is coming off a 21-3 win over Cal in "The Big Game" last weekend. This after Stanford rallied from a controversial 20-13 overtime loss at Notre Dame on Oct. 13.

This is the third ranked team CU will face in as many games. Colorado has lost 10 straight (and counting) against ranked teams (last win: 34-30 over Kansas in 2009).

Colorado Curse

Here is your hot gambling tip of the week: EVERY team during this 2012 season has LOST their next game after having played Colorado. It's called the 'Colorado Curse.' Look it up. CSU, Sac State, Fresno State, Washington State, UCLA, ASU & USC have all lost following their matchup against CU. That means Oregon is going down this weekend. So run out and place your bets on the Trojans. You heard it hear first.

Game: Colorado @ #2 Oregon

Kick-off: 12:00 PM PST

And the world turns . . . . .

CU got shellacked against USC last weekend. And now they face Oregon this weekend. Nothing worse than one of the youngest teams in the country having to face USC and then Oregon in back-to-back weeks. The biggest game of the season for Oregon, at USC, looms, but the chance of an upset at the hands of Colorado is microscopic.

Colorado is coming off a 50-6 loss at Southern California. The game had a weird feel to it as CU hung around and made it seem like they could compete. For instance CU ran 85 plays to the Trojans’ 48 and the Buffs held the edge in first downs and time of possession. The Buffs also moved the ball well at times between the 20s, but with 5 trips into the red zone they came away with just two field goals for 6 points. Not good.

In addition CU committed six turnovers, five of which led to 29 USC points. And then Matt Barkley threw 6 TD passes against CU. Again. For the second straight year.

And now on to the Bataan Death March . . .

The Colorado Buffaloes remain on the Pac-12 road for a second straight week against a second consecutive ranked opponent, traveling to the state of Oregon for the first time in 26 years to take on the No. 2 Oregon Ducks (7-0, 4-0 Pac-12).

Kickoff is at 12 noon at Autzen Stadium. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

CU has lost nine straight against ranked teams (last win: 34-30 over Kansas in 2009) and 19 straight road games against ranked opponents (last win: 31-17 at UCLA in 2002). When it comes to playing teams who are ranked second in the nation Colorado is 4-15 all-time .Colorado is 2-5 all-time in the state of Oregon with both wins at Autzen. CU won 13-6 in 1955 and 17-13 in 1967, the first game ever played in Autzen, which was completed in time for that ’67 season.

So, basically, don't expect any of these stats to change in the win column.

Oregon is undefeated and played No. 24 Arizona State last weekend in Tempe. The Ducks scored all of its points in the first 20 minutes in defeating the Sun Devils, 43-21.

I will say a prayer for Colorado.

Colorado put up a good showing in the first half against ASU last Thursday. Almost giving us hope. Then they shit the bed. Par for the course. The Buffs were down 20-17 after a 17-point second quarter, but a 100-yard kickoff return for a TD to open the second half shifted momentum back the Sun Devils’ way.

Colorado is coming off a 51-17 loss to Arizona State last week at home. The Buffaloes have had their last three losses come by at least 28 points. Colorado ranks 120th in the country in defense, allowing 41.3 points per game. This is bad. The offense is 106th in scoring, averaging 20.8 points per game. This isn't any better.

Now they go up against the Trojans of USC. The Trojans are favored by 40 points. So we're in for a long day.

Here we go.

The Colorado Buffaloes hit the road for their next two games including the first this season against a ranked opponent on Saturday, Oct. 20, visiting the Southern California Trojans (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) in a 3:00 PM kickoff at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

Interestingly enough, a crowd of 93,607 is expected for this weekend's game. I will be one of them. If you are in the area or planning on going to the game hit me up! I will be there.

This will be CU’s fourth-ever visit to the Los Angeles Coliseum (initial visit was in 1927) and the first since 2000.

CU has lost eight straight against ranked teams (last win: 34-30 over Kansas in 2009); the Buffs have lost 18 straight road games against ranked opponents, with the last win coming in the Los Angeles area 31-17 over UCLA at the Rose Bowl in 2002. (I was there).

Ironically, Colorado has won its last two Pac-12 road games (the finale at Utah last year and the opener this year at Washington State).

USC won a hard fought game in Seattle, downing host Washington 24-14. The Trojans have had three of their five wins this year come by 13 points or less, and their last two come by 10 points. The Trojans are giving up only 18.5 points per game this year while scoring 32.3 points per contest

Ugly Stat
Colorado is 2-14-1 all-time in the state of California, including last month’s loss at Fresno State. So we’re looking at 2-15-1 . . . .

After a bye week the Buffs should be relaxed, refreshed, healthy, and ready to take on the ASU Sun Devils!

The Buffs did not fare so well at home their last game out against UCLA. Colorado is coming off a 42-14 loss. It was a 21-7 game in the third quarter with CU driving, but the Buffs were stopped on 4th-&-1 at midfield and then had a fumble and interception that led to two quick touchdowns and the Bruins pulled away. The Buffs are simply too young and too inexperienced to overcome mistakes like that. They are no where near that point. They have to play near perfect to have a chance to win against anyone this year.

As a result the Bruins sealed their first win in Boulder since a 33-16 victory in 1984. The last time UCLA played in Boulder they lost 16-14 in 2003 (I was there).

Time for the Sun Devil's road test.

The Colorado Buffaloes had their first in-season bye since 2010 and now host just their third nationally televised Thursday night game on ESPN against the Arizona State Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12). Kickoff is at 6:00 PM PDT.

Colorado has played on a Thursday night only two times previously. The results:

21-17 win over Stanford in 1990
17-14 overtime win over No. 21 West Virginia in 2008 (I was there).

Arizona State defeated California in Berkeley 27-17 last week and are alone atop the Pac-12 South with its 2-0 league mark. ASU is not ranked, but is knocking on the door at No. 26 in the coaches poll (AP #32).

Sidebar - The Colorado Men's Basketball team will be on hand during the game to receive their Pac-12 Tournament Champion rings! Look for the ceremony between the first and second quarters.

BUFFS WIN!

Colorado is off the snide. And off ESPN's "Bottom 10" list.

The Buffs shocked Washington State last week in Pullman by not giving up and redeeming themselves from the fiasco in Fresno. The win snapped a four-game losing streak in conference openers. The last league win came in 2007 when CU was in the Big 12 and beat No. 3 Oklahoma 27-24. (Kevin Eberhart anyone?). The last seven times CU opened up 1-0 in league play, it went on to win its next game making its conference record 2-0 (CU is 14-1-1 in second games following its last 16conference opening wins). Colorado's 35-34 comeback win over WSU is one for the ages. It marks Jon Embree's first win when trailing at halftime and the 21 point rally is the largest ever 4th quarter road comeback.

Believe it or not the Buffs are on top of the South Division standings. (Tied with Arizona State). Our one conference win has us above Arizona, UCLA, USC and Utah. So enjoy it while it lasts.

Let's get it on:

The Colorado Buffaloes return to Boulder to host their 2012 Pac-12 Conference home opener against the UCLA Bruins (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12). Kickoff is at 3:00 PM Pacific. The game will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Networks.

UCLA is coming off a 27-20 loss at home to now-ranked (No. 18) Oregon State. That loss has knocked UCLA out of the national rankings as they were 19th last week but now unranked this week. The Bruins own blowout wins over Rice and Houston with an impressive win over then-No. 17 Nebraska in-between. (Nice). UCLA is favored by 20 points over Colorado.

But as we know from last week the point spread means nothing.

Ah . . . . . disaster . . . . debacle . . . . nay, epic catastrophe of biblical proportions.

If you have to hit rock bottom before you can turn things around I believe we've reached it.

If I wanted to quit drinking I'd take a shot for every CU touchdown.

Buffs suck. Bad. Plain and simple. I've never experienced such a poor losing streak and success drought since I have been a Buff. Hard to take. Colorado simply got their ASSES HANDED to them by Fresno State. I would know, I was there. The one, and only, time I have ever left a Colorado game early before the end was against Cal in 2010. This past weekend we tried to stick it out until the 3rd quarter. But it was more than we could take. We left. However I feel this was an accomplishment in itself as the majority of the paltry Colorado fans in attendance had all left after the first quarter. (And rightly so).

The stats are so bad both for the game at Fresno State and for the Buffs nationally that it's not even worth going into and recapping. (Example: Colorado is ranked over 100 in the four major category with the worst one being 115th in Points Against. There are a total of a 120 teams in the FBS!). That fact that Fresno State broke school records against us says enough.

Here is what is really scary and the reality that is slapping Colorado in the face: The Buffs may be facing a 0-12 season! No one knows where Colorado can win with the remaining schedule. I for one believe that we can, and we must, get at least one win. For I will not know what to do with myself if we don't. The best chance may be this weekend against WSU.

Still, we trudge on . . . . . .

It doesn't get any easier for Colorado as CU opens up Pac-12 play against the Washington State Cougars (2-1) at Martin Stadium in Pullman, WA. Kick-off is at 1:00 PM PDT. The game will be televised on FX Networks.

This Saturday’s game will signify the start of Colorado’s second season in the Pac-12. Last year, WSU rallied to win in Boulder, 31-27, in what was CU’s first-ever Pac-12 league game.

Historically Colorado is 2-0 against the Cougars in the state of Washington, but this is the first time the game will be in Pullman. CU won in 1982 in Spokane and in 2004 in Seattle. (I was there).

Footnote: CU & WSU were scheduled to play in Pullman on Sept. 15, 2001, but the game was cancelled due to 9/11 four days earlier.

The 12-0 win over WSU on Sept. 18, 1982 was the first for head coach Bill McCartney, who went on to become CU’s winningest coach of all-time (93-55-5).

As we know the Buffs received a 69-14 shellacking to the Bulldogs last weekend. However Washington State won a Friday night game on the road in Las Vegas, racing to a 28-10 second quarter lead en route to a 35-27 win over UNLV.

Like a train wreck we must watch.

There are the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Welcome to this years version of the Colorado Buffaloes. It’s going to be a very lonnnnng year.

Colorado loses 30-28 to Sacramento State on late field goal - that sounds nicer than it really was. Colorado once again got outplayed only this time by a lesser division school. What started out good and looked to be a game you would expect turned into a nightmare and yet another goddammned embaressment and disgrace.

Colorado dropped to 0-2 when Sacramento State drove 72 yards to set up the Hornet's game-winning 30-yard field goal with no time remaining. Folsom Field became as quiet as a funeral, and everyone who cared about the team must have turned in their membership card.

I don't even know what to say anymore - expect that the Buffs are going to get rolled at Fresno.

Breaking news: Colorado will be playing Conner Wood as the second quarterback this week. We'll see how that experiment goes.

The Colorado Buffaloes hit the road for the first time in 2012, heading west to central California for their first-ever visit to Fresno to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 Mountain West) at Bulldog Stadium Kickoff is at 5:00 PM

The CBS Sports Network (formerly CSTV) will broadcast the game nationally. The Buffs will be looking to win two in a row on the road for the first time since 2004 (at Kansas and Nebraska). CU is playing two teams from California back-to-back for the first time since 2002, when it faced three straight (San Diego State and USC at home and UCLA away).

Fresno State traveled to No. 4 Oregon last week and held its own for the most part in a 42-25 loss.

I am sticking to my guns and traveling to Fresno this weekend as planned. Hoping to attend CU's first win of the season in person. If any other Buffs will be in the area or at the game hit me up! Shoulder to shoulder we'll cheer on our Buffs.

In a word: disgusting. I am disgusted.

Memories of the Dan Hawkins era are swirling as the Buffs failed and folded against weak CSU. Which only means Colorado itself is very weak. I fear another long and trying season. It is hard to be disappointed so soon but C'MON! This Return to Dominance (RTD) campaign has been in place since 1999. And we're still . . . w a i t i n g . . . . .

CU opened up strong with a 14-3 lead in the first half but then became outscored 19-3 for the rest of the game. (Can you believe that? I cannot). The Rams rallied late with two fourth quarter field goals for a 22-17 win in a game that featured four lead changes. But the wrong outcome.

Colorado now needs to rebound from its opening day setback. You would think playing Sacramento State at home would be a gimmie. But then that's what we thought with Dan Hawkin's first game as head coach at CU against Montana State.

Sacramento State lost is opener on August 30 at New Mexico State, but gave the Aggies fits into the fourth quarter in a 49-19 loss. NMSU scored 21 points in the final stanza (including a late score with 23 seconds left). The Hornets did however have 397 yards on offense with 308 of those yards through the air. (YIKES!)

Enough is enough. Let's get it on.

The Colorado Buffaloes have their home opener this Saturday, hosting the Sacramento State Hornets (0-1, 0-0 Big Sky). Kick-off is at high noon Pacific Time.

The game will be televised regionally by the Pac-12 Mountain Network. Additionally, the game will also be televised on the brand new, spanking Pac-12 Network. The Pac-12 Network has only been in operation for three weeks and Saturday’s game will mark CU’s debut. Do you get the Pac-12 Network? No? Well, GO GET IT! Any sports bar who exclusively uses satellite as their provider will not be able to access any of the Pac-12 Networks programming since the satellite companies have still not agreed to broadcast the new Networks.

If you can't get it all are welcome at my house to watch the game! :-)

Please Lord, no more of these shenanigans. Let's get a win so we can hold our head up high for a week and have some hope heading into Fresno next week.

Welcome, Buff fans, the 2012 Edition of the Buff Newsletter!

I am fired up. College football is here! It officially kicked of Thursday with 15 games. (Texas A&M vs Louisiana Tech was postponed due to Hurricane Issac. Also, let be known that Sacramento State, CU's second opponent of the season, has already lost). And there are 5 games on Friday night.

But the best games are on Saturday. And the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown.

What to make of this year's Buffs? It is hard to say. There are too many unknowns and unanswered questions. We'll have to wait and see what type of team materializes on the field under Jon Embree's second year. What we do know is this:

Jordan Webb, transfer from Kansas, is the starting QB. His effectiveness remains to be seen.
Tony Jones is the starting running back - this is good
Doug Rippy is back - good
Paul Richardson is out for the season - bad
You just don't lose to Colorado State

Time to put up or shut up.

Let's get to it:

The Colorado Buffaloes take on the Colorado State Rams in Denver at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Kick-off is at 1:00 PM Pacific. The game is nationally televised on FX Networks. This is the 18^th straight year CU-CSU is televised on a national basis.

This CU’s 123rd season of intercollegiate football. Colorado leads the all-time series with Colorado State with a record of 61-20-2. CU leads the series in Denver by a 7-4 margin

(four straight wins), with all the games since 1998 played at Mile High.

Note that during the all-time series CU has outscored CSU by 1,994-957. As such Colorado is just six points shy of reaching 2,000 points and when that happens it will mark the first opponent CU will reach that plateau against.

Colorado enters 2012 with an all-time record of 674-452-36, which is 21st on the all-time win list and is 27th in all-time winning percentage (.596). Only 12 Division I schools have played more seasons of intercollegiate football than Colorado.

Last weekend's game against the Bruins was brutal. The only good part about it was the pre-game tailgate. After the opening kick-off it all went downhill from there.

Can't believe Neuheisel beat us again. Hard to take.

And to think we might have a worst season this year than last year. The Buffs need to win their last game of the season just to tie Dan Hawkins dismal record from last year. And it doesn't look like its going to happen against the Utes.

The Colorado Buffaloes will wrap up the 2011 season on Friday, traveling to Salt Lake City to resume the rivalry with the Utah Utes (7-4, 4-4 Pac-12) at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Kick-off is at 12:30 PM Pacific. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. Interestingly, this will be the fist ever televised football game between CU & UU

This is the first time in the Buffs will play seven road games in a single season and with it CU brings their baggage - a 23-game losing streak on the road. We all know the story. The last time was 2007. It was against Texas Tech. Blah, blah, blah. Colorado is closing a regular season with two road games for the first time since 1989 and just the second time in the last 38 seasons. Colorado is 20-20-4 all-time in games played in the state of Utah.

The last time CU’s final regular season game (not counting Big 12 title games) was not against Nebraska was in 1995, when the Buffs closed a 9-2 year with a 27-17 win at Kansas State.

While Colorado has absolutely nothing to play for, except maybe for some goddamn pride, Utah is still alive for the Pac-12 South Division title, The Utes need to beat Colorado and then have UCLA lose at USC on Saturday. Utah is coming off a 30-27 overtime win at Washington State.

It will be a slaughter. But still I will watch.

Interesting Fact:

Think the move to the Pac-12 was a good one for Colorado? From an economic standpoint it sure was a good decision for the University. CU will sell approximately 1,350 tickets for the Utah game thus bringing the total to almost 13,500 for the five 2011 Pac-12 road games. CU never sold more than 6,000 away game tickets in any season during its 15 years in the Big 12.

Buffs win!

The University of Colorado notches its first win in the new Pac-12 conference by beating the University of Arizona Wildcats at home last weekend by a score of 48-29.

It was a windy, blustery day with sustained 45 MPH winds that gusted up to 71 MPH in the 4th quarter. The Wildcats were favored by double digits but on Senior Day the Buffs and their end of year pride and effort would not be denied.

The win also preserved Colorado's 87 year streak of at least one win at Folsom Field. They have not have blanked since playing at Folsom ever. That should be a given. This year it was in question. CU prevailed and maintained integrity in light of the Dan Hawkins era full of negative records.

On to the showdown!!!

The Colorado Buffaloes travel to Pasadena to take on the UCLA Bruins (5-5, 4-3 Pac-12) at the Rose Bowl.

Kick of is at 4:30 PM PST. The game will be televised nationally by Versus.

Colorado snapped a seven-game losing streak last Saturday and now turn its attention to ending a 22-game losing streak on the road.

Colorado is 50-10 against unranked opponents in November games dating back to the 1985 season.

UCLA is coming off a 31-6 loss at Utah in the snow, but still is the only team in the Pac-12 South that controls its own destiny to get the championship game on Dec. 2. The Bruins, while 5-5, have not lost back-to-back games this season.

CU and UCLA have played three times in California, the first two meetings in the L.A. Coliseum, but the last was in the Rose Bowl, a 31-17 Colorado win in 2003.

CU is closing a regular season with two road games for the first time since 1989 and just the second time in the last 38 seasons.

People - this is a season to forget. It is bad. With that being said our best chance of a second win comes tomorrow against the Wildcats. Here we go!

The Colorado Buffaloes wrap up the home portion of their 2011 schedule this Saturday, hosting the Arizona Wildcats (2-7, 1-6 Pac-12) at Folsom Field.

Kickoff is at 11:30 AM. The game will be televised nationally by Fox College Sports (FCS) on its Pacific network.

Having never gone winless at Folsom Field in the history if CU football the Buffs are in danger of achieving this dubious distinction this weekend. Colorado has not recorded a home win only three times. The first two times coming in the university’s first two years of football (0-2 in both 1890 and 1891 on campus grass fields) and in 1920 (0-1-2 at Gamble Field).

Saturday is “Senior Day” and CU is 16-7 dating back to 1988. Five of those seven losses came against Nebraska. No worries of that happening again.

I will be hosting a tailgate party at the Rose Bowl next weekend against UCLA. Be there!

Let's face it. This is a bad season. 'Nuff said.

The ASU Sun Devils maintained control of the Pac-12 South last Saturday with a 48-14 rout of Colorado. At least CU scored 12 more points than the previous weekend against Stanford. 7 of those points coming from the defense.

Ah well. Onto this week.

The Colorado Buffaloes hit the national stage and in 3D as they play their third straight ranked opponent, hosting the No. 21 Southern California Trojans (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12).

Kickoff is 6:00 PM PDT at Folsom Field. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN and ESPN 3D.

Friday night’s game is one of 20 games ESPN is televising in the 3-D this year which is Colorado’s first-ever game in “the dimension.” I don’t recommend you watch it as such . . .

USC is on NCAA probation and can only be ranked by the Associated Press. The Trojans are ineligible for the Pac-12 championship and a postseason bowl. So even a loss is win. Ha-ha!

Colorado is looking to avoid its first seven-game losing streak since 1980 and end a seven-game skid against ranked opponents. The Buffaloes also had a seven-game winless streak in 1982, going 0-6-1. For this season Colorado has lost six straight games in the same year since opening 0-6 in 2006. Overall, it’s the longest losing streak since 10 in a row over the 2005-06 seasons. When it rains, it pours.

USC will be without safety T.J. McDonald for the first half of Friday's game after the Pac-12 announced a half-game suspension for a late hit on a Stanford receiver last week. CHEATER!

CU has lost seven straight games against ranked teams with their last win being 34-30 over Kansas in 2009.

Random Stats

Colorado is 23-10-2 all-time in Folsom Field night games. This will be just the fifth November night game at home in CU history and the first ever Friday night game. The Buffs are 2-1-1 at home at night in the month of November.

Coach Embree has the right attitude. He is not tolerating players her go through the motions. In his own words, "You can tell which ones by the way they play, the way they act on the sidelines, how they act after a loss like this (ASU), and how they have acted after previous losses. In some cases we can't do anything about it because they are the only people we have, which is the sad thing."

Said Tyler Hansen, "There are some guys who are just OK with wearing the jersey. That's wrong and that's what has to change. We have to change that culture around here.”

You know it is a terrible game when the the score is SO BAD that the telecast is pre-empted for hockey. That is what happened to me last week while watching the horror show that was CU versus Oregon in Vermont. The game being so out of hand the station cut from the action on the field in the 4th quarter and switched to the upcoming hockey match. And I'm not talking about a hockey game already in progress. I'm talking about the PRE GAME lead-in. They'd rather show people talking about hockey then finish showing the football game.

Wow. This is a bad year.

Against a team as deep as Oregon CU found itself deep in trouble from the get-go. The Ducks ripped the Buffs 45-2. I still contend that at least we didn't get shut out. As bad as it was that would have been worse.

And now let the division games begin.

The Colorado Buffaloes play their first-ever intra-division game in the Pac-12 Conference this Saturday, traveling to Tempe to take on the South Division-leading Arizona State Sun Devils (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12).

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM Pacific time at Sun Devil Stadium. The game will be televised regionally on FSN-Arizona. This will be only the third meeting between the two schools; the first of which occurred just recently in 2006 in Boulder. ASU leads the series at 2-0.

Arizona State comes out of its bye week feeling healthier and looking at a favorable path to the inaugural Pac-12 title game. They went into their bye week atop the South Division despite a 41-27 loss at then-No. 9 Oregon on Oct. 15. The Sun Devils are tied in the division with No. 20 Southern California which lost to Arizona State on Sept. 24. However USC is ineligible for postseason play anyway. Because they are cheaters.

Arizona State is the third of CU’s last five opponents to have a bye week prior to playing the Buffaloes (along with Washington State and Washington).

To say Colorado is banged up is understatement. CU is decimated at the skill positions. Rodney Steward is out. Paul Richardson is out. Doug Rippy is out. Ray Polk is out. Anthony Perkins is out. So on and so forth. And now it's unsure whether quarterback Tyler Hansen will be available. (He went out in the second quarter with a concussion). It will be up to freshman Nick Hirschman to run the offense.

The Buffs have lost six straight against ranked teams and are still looking to snap their 21-game road losing streak. Fat chance.

Colorado now faces the home stretch of the season with 5 divisional foes in a row. It's always the divisional games that matter the most. If CU can prevail they put themselves in a position for the championship game. To do so they need to win out. Specifically they must top ASU. The time is now.

Ho-boy. Last week's game against the Washington Huskies was ugly. UW, who was idle the previous Saturday, was rested and ready for the Buffaloes last weekend, scoring touchdowns on its first five possessions en route to a 52-24 victory. The Buffs became further decimated with injuries by losing Rodney Steward and Douglass Rippy. (Rippy is a HUGE loss). There is simply no luck or momentum for CU this year as they are barely fielding a starting squad of walking wounded.

The Colorado Buffaloes return home to Boulder for just the third time in eight games this season, hosting the No. 9 Oregon Ducks (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) in a 12:30 p.m. PDT kickoff at Folsom Field. The game will be televised regionally by Fox Sports Net.

This is Oregon’s first trip to Boulder since the 1987 season opener, when the Ducks escaped with a 10-7 win. The last three meetings between the two schools have all been in the postseason (’96 Cotton, ’98 Aloha, ’02 Fiesta).

Oregon is coming off a win against Arizona State, 41-27, in Tempe, last weekend minus the services of its starting QB Darron Thomas and Heisman candidate TB LaMichael James.

Believe it or not

Colorado leads the Oregon series 8-7. This is the 15 meetings between the two schools which are the most games CU has played against any former Pac-10 opponent. As a side note CU and Utah have met 57 times.

CU has lost five straight against ranked teams (last win: 34-30 over Kansas in 2009).

The ugliness continues this Saturday and only a miracle would give the Buffs any chance of a win, let alone simply keeping the game close. Let's pray for that miracle.

Colorado was outplayed by Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal last week getting spanked 48-7 at The Farm. That was hard to watch and hard to take. Good thing I was busy getting my buzz on to anesthetize the pain. The game started brilliantly with CU looking like they were about to strike first and set the tone after a kickoff turnover by Stanford. But alas the worst possible outcome occurred in not only did CU not score but allowed a blocked field goal for a score. Christ. Even at that the Buffs pulled within 13-7. But that would be as close as they ever got.

The Hawkins Hangover continues.

The road woes also continue as the Colorado Buffaloes travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Washington Huskies (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) at Husky Stadium in Seattle. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 PM PDT. The game will be televised regionally by ROOT Sports (Rocky Mountain and Northwest), which will feed a national broadcast on FCS-Atlantic.
(This is a change from FCS-Pacific, originally slated to air the game).

Colorado and Washington have met 10 times in their histories, but not since 2000 in Boulder when the Huskies escaped with a 17-14 win. Washington was idle last Saturday, and the Huskies are out to win their third straight game after opening with back-to-back league wins over California (31-23) and at Utah (31-14). As if the cards aren’t stacked against the Buffs enough UW is the second of three opponents this month who have open weeks prior to playing CU: Washington State was idle on Sept. 24 and Arizona State is off next Saturday.

Two of the nation’s top senior running backs will be facing each other this Saturday. CU’s Rodney Stewart (3,175) and UW’s Chris Polk (3,172) are only separated by just three yards in their careers. It will be a dual. Go Speedy!

Well, the Buffs choked and managed to squander a two touchdown lead in the last 2.5 minutes of the game against Wazzu last week. The Buffaloes led 27-17 with 5:11 left but it wasn't enough to thwart Washington State's high-powered aerial attack against a patchwork secondary that included two converted offensive players. Until the final few minutes, it looked like the Buffs were going to win despite a rash of injuries that has sidelined six cornerbacks. But CU crumbled as WSU mounted a stunning 31-27 comeback win.

What's worse is that game was Colorado's second and last predicted win.

It goes from bad to worse as Colorado now faces an uphill battle against top 25 teams such as Oregon & ASU. It starts against #7 Stanford this weekend.

The Colorado Buffaloes play their first league road game as a member of the Pac-12 Conference this Saturday, traveling to the Bay Area to take on the Stanford Cardinal (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) in a 4:30 PM PDT kickoff at Stanford Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by Versus.

Colorado and Stanford have not met since 1993, a game I was at and attend. And a game where we were ROBBED! That game was the nail in the coffin for my hatred of Stanford. For those of you who may remember that game was also the “Mitch Berger Incident.”

This will be the seventh meeting all-time between the two schools. The first game was in Denver in 1904 (the Cardinal traveled by train to Colorado).

Ugly
• This game is CU’s first game against a ranked opponent in 2011. Colorado has lost four straight against ranked teams. The last win of which was 34-30 over Kansas in 2009.
• The Buffs have lost 15 straight road games where the opponent was ranked. The last ranked road win was 31-17 at UCLA in 2002.
• The Buffs have lost 19 straight road games and counting. The last road win was 31-26 at Texas Tech in 2007.

Nothing about this weekend suggests any of these stats are going to change.

Stanford will be seeking its first 5-0 start since 1951 and can match the school record by winning 13 in a row for the first time since 1939-41.

Irony
I will actually be in the Bay Area this weekend but unable to go to the game. I will be attending my HS reunion. This will be the firs time ever when I am in the same area as the Buffs are playing and won’t be going to the game.

Let’s hope CU can keep it close.

Ugh. Well, in hindsight I am glad I did not go to Columbus last weekend. Colorado lost 37-17 to Ohio State where field position dictated the entire game. As the Buffs have done in every game this season thus far they fell behind early. Against CSU you can get away with it. Against Ohio State you can not. Even with all the chips in our favor, Tressel gone, Pryor left, suspensions, scandal, OSU coming off a loss, OSU starting a freshman QB, etc. CU could not best a weakened Buckeye team. No thanks to themselves. Sloppy play simply doomed the Buffs.

Moving on.

The Colorado Buffaloes host the Washington State Cougars (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12) in a 12:30 PM kickoff at Folsom Field. The game will be televised nationally by Fox College Sports.

The Buffs are 78-37-2 in conference openers and 5-2 in their first game in a brand new league. CU was 8-7 in Big 12 openers and won its last seven as a member of the Big 8.

WSU is the first of three opponents (all this month) who will play CU with the schedule break of having the previous week off. Washington (Oct. 15) and Arizona State (Oct. 29) are idle the previous Saturdays as well and also will have a full two weeks to prep for the Buffaloes.

This is the second, and last, predicted win for Colorado for 2011. If that's the case let's go out and get it.
