During my recent stay at Siringit’s newly opened luxury camp in Tarangire National Park, I learned about the Siringit Foundation, the charitable arm of the Siringit Collection. While guests come for the wildlife and luxury accommodations, the foundation works behind the scenes to make sure tourism benefits the people and landscapes that make Tanzania so special.

The more I learned, the more I realized this wasn’t simply a donation program attached to a safari company. It is an effort to connect tourism, conservation, education, and sustainability in ways that create long-term impact.

The Siringit Foundation was founded by Miguel Van Hoof in 2009 to provide free education to underprivileged children. His personal residence near Arusha is now the luxurious Siringit Villa, and the safari Camps were built to support the Foundation’s work.

It focuses on four areas: education, conservation, reforestation, and sustainability. Its mission is to create opportunities for local communities while helping protect Tanzania’s natural heritage for future generations.

What I appreciate is that the foundation doesn’t treat community projects as an afterthought. The philosophy is built into the safari experience itself. When You Sponsor a Child, You’re Investing in a Future

One of the easiest ways to understand the foundation’s impact is through its education programs.

Even when I asked them to join me for a group photo, they were quite reluctant to leave their textbooks as they were preparing for their final exams. Project manager Elias Piniel told me that many of these kids came from impoverished families that wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford education, and that the Foundation sought out especially motivated students to sponsor.

I realized that when you sponsor a child through the foundation, you’re not simply paying for school supplies. You’re helping create opportunities that can transform an entire family’s future.

Plant a Tree and Leave Something Behind

Through its partnership with The Kilimanjaro Project, the Siringit Foundation supports reforestation efforts around Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. Indigenous trees are planted in important watershed areas, and nurseries can produce up to 100,000 seedlings each season.

The project is also helping protect the endangered Prioria msoo tree, a species native to the region. More than 10,000 seedlings have already been cultivated from collected seeds.

One idea I particularly like is their suggestion to plant a tree for every night you spend in Tanzania. It’s a simple gesture, but it creates a tangible connection between your visit and the future health of the country’s ecosystems.

The Siringit Foundation partners with Friends of Serengeti Switzerland and Tanzania National Parks to support wildlife conservation efforts. Their work includes funding veterinary equipment and medicines used to treat injured animals and assist with wildlife management.

The partnership also supports anti-poaching initiatives designed to protect vulnerable species, including rhinos.

The camps also source most of their food from their own gardens and recycles 100% of their waste.

If you are like me, you crave crunchy, salty snacks on long flights. Something to keep you busy while watching movies and give you a temporary high. You opt for sparkling water instead of a gin and tonic, thinking you are making a better choice. But you are doing it all wrong!

I’ve landed in places like Chengdu, Cusco, and Copenhagen feeling completely clear-headed—and I’ve also stumbled off flights bloated, dehydrated, and wondering why I thought that second glass of wine was a good idea at 35,000 feet.

After years of long-haul travel, I’ve realized this: what you eat and drink on a plane has far more impact than most people think. Not just on comfort during the flight, but on how quickly you recover, how well you sleep, and how present you are when you arrive.

This isn’t about being overly disciplined or skipping every indulgence. It’s about understanding how your body actually behaves in the air—and making choices that support it.

Why Flying Changes Everything

Flying is not a neutral environment, even though you may enjoy the experience. Your body is operating under completely different conditions than it does on the ground. As someone who flies up to 40 hours a month, an airplane seat is just like a second office to me.

Cabin pressure is equivalent to being at high altitude, and humidity levels drop drastically—often to desert-like conditions. That combination alone explains why your skin dries out, your throat feels scratchy, and you’re constantly reaching for water. Doctors consistently point out that dehydration is one of the most immediate effects of flying, and it starts sooner than you realize.

Then there’s digestion. Gas expands at altitude—by as much as 25%—which explains that uncomfortable bloated feeling mid-flight. Add in limited movement, irregular eating times, and often overly salty airline meals, and your system starts to feel off pretty quickly.

And one of the most surprising shifts? Your taste buds. At altitude, your sensitivity to sweet and salty flavors drops, while umami—savory, rich flavors—remains strong. That’s why tomato juice suddenly tastes incredible on a plane, even if you’d never order it on the ground.

Once I understood all of this, I stopped treating in-flight meals as an afterthought.

Hydration Is the First Priority

If there’s one rule I never break, it’s this: hydrate aggressively.

The dry cabin air is constantly pulling moisture from your body, and you don’t always feel thirsty until you’re already behind. On long-haul flights, I aim to drink water consistently throughout—far more than I would on the ground. Sadly, most flight attendants treat water as an occasional courtesy drink. My advice – fill your water bottle prior to boarding and request the flight attendant to refill your bottle instead of giving you small plastic cups and disposable bottles.

I’ve also started adding electrolytes, especially on overnight flights or when I’m heading straight into work. Coconut water or electrolyte packets help replenish what plain water alone sometimes doesn’t.

I’m not rigid about it—I’ll drink the welcome champagne on arrival, and yes, sometimes a glass of red wine with dinner, but I’m far more aware now of how quickly those choices can undo the balance. Alcohol hits harder in the air and contributes to dehydration and poor sleep, which only makes jet lag worse.

Eating Light Is Not About Dieting—It’s About Function

I used to think long flights were a time to indulge. You’re sitting still for hours, after all—why not enjoy the full meal service?

But I’ve learned the hard way that heavy, rich meals don’t sit well in the air. Your digestive system slows down, and foods that feel fine on the ground can leave you feeling sluggish and uncomfortable mid-flight.

Now, I lean toward lighter, simpler meals—foods that are easy to digest and don’t rely on excess salt or fat for flavor. A grain bowl, a piece of grilled fish, yogurt with fruit—these are the kinds of things that keep me feeling steady rather than weighed down.

Bananas have become a go-to as well. They’re easy, they travel well, and the potassium helps balance fluids in your body, which is especially helpful when you’re flying. I also carry my own snacks – roasted edamame, nuts, raisins, and protein bars. I have packed home-made quinoa salads, oranges, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the flight. Remember, as long as you don’t carry liquids, you can take your food through security. And you will need to discard any perishable items (fruits, vegetables, etc) prior to landing at international destinations.

What I try to avoid are the usual suspects: overly salty snacks, fried foods, and anything that’s likely to cause bloating—carbonated drinks included. It’s not about restriction; it’s about knowing how I want to feel when I land.

Why Certain Foods Taste Better in the Air

This is something I’ve come to appreciate more recently.

Because your taste perception changes at altitude, foods that are rich in umami actually shine in the air. Tomato-based dishes, mushrooms, aged cheeses, even brothy soups—they tend to taste more satisfying and complete.

It explains why tomato juice is so popular on flights. It’s one of the few things that tastes exactly how it should, even at 35,000 feet.

When I have the option to pre-select meals, I often lean toward dishes that naturally have depth of flavor without relying on salt—Mediterranean-style meals, Asian broths, or anything with a good balance of acidity and richness.

Not All Airline Food Is the Same

One thing frequent flying teaches you quickly is that airline food varies widely—and it’s worth paying attention.

Some airlines are making a real effort to offer balanced, thoughtfully prepared meals. I’ve had surprisingly fresh salads on Delta Air Lines ‘East-to-West Coast legs, especially when pre-ordering. On Asian carriers like Singapore Airlines, lighter options like congee or steamed fish tend to be easier on the body and more aligned with how you actually feel in the air. And Middle Eastern carriers like Qatar Airways often incorporate fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and balanced flavors that don’t feel overly processed.

Whenever possible, I pre-select my meal. It’s one of the simplest ways to avoid ending up with something overly heavy or sodium-laden. Remember, you can also pre-order “fruit-only.”

Eating for Jet Lag, Not Just Hunger

Jet lag isn’t just about sleep—it’s about rhythm. Your body clock gets disrupted, and your eating patterns play a bigger role than most people realize.

On overnight flights, I’ve started eating earlier in the journey, keeping the meal light, and then skipping the second service if I can. It helps signal to my body that it’s time to rest, rather than digest.

When I land, I try to eat something fresh and aligned with the local time—no matter how tired I am. It’s a small shift, but it helps reset my system faster than anything else.

The Small Rituals That Make a Big Difference

Over time, I’ve developed a few habits that travel with me everywhere.

I always carry a refillable water bottle and electrolyte packets. I bring simple snacks—nuts, fruit, sometimes a piece of dark chocolate. Not because I don’t trust airline food, but because having control over a few choices makes a big difference.

More than anything, I’ve learned to be intentional. To eat when I’m actually hungry, not just because a tray is placed in front of me. To skip what doesn’t serve me. To think about how I want to feel when I land—not just how something tastes in the moment.

The Bottom Line

Flying puts your body under subtle but real stress. The food and drink choices you make in the air can either amplify that, or help you move through it with ease.

For me, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s arriving in a new destination feeling clear, energized, and ready to engage—whether that means heading straight into reporting, exploring a market, or sitting down for a meal that truly deserves my attention.

Because after traveling to 130+ countries, I’ve learned that how you arrive matters just as much as where you go.

Back then, it wasn’t on bucket lists. There were no viral reels of glowing icebergs. No nonstop flights from the United States. No trending Arctic cruise routes. Just a massive white landmass on the map that felt intimidating, distant, and quietly powerful.

The reason I visited Greenland back then was for a food festival. Believe it or not, I was one of the handful of writers invited from around the world to cover Greenland’s first-ever Igasa Food festival in the small town of Narsaq. The event itself lasted only a few hours. Because of it, I was able to visit Greenland’s first culinary school, meet local chefs, and tour greenhouses. I got a pulse of Greenland’s Tourism before it became popular.

During that trip, I toured the country, traveling by helicopter and boat. One of my stops was a tiny island of Ipitaq, inhabited by a lovely French-Greenlandic couple, their 7-year-old daughter, 2 dogs, and 200 sheep. While staying at their sheep farm, I developed a deep connection to the family, and we are still friends to this day! They just opened a farm stay experience in Bornholm, Denmark.

My first children’s book was based on this little girl, Ina, as I wanted to show how isolated yet enriching her life was. Though she had no internet, cable, phone, or neighbors, she spoke many languages and had intelligent conversations with the visitors. The biggest transformation over the last decade is connectivity.

When I first visited, I flew through Copenhagen and then boarded a small aircraft to Kangerlussuaq. That airport, once the primary international gateway, felt like an Arctic outpost — functional, wind-swept, and remote.

Now, Nuuk has a full international airport, making it the primary entry point. Additional airport expansions in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq are expected to further streamline travel.

There are still no roads connecting towns. Let me repeat that — no highways linking cities. You travel between towns by plane, boat, helicopter, or seasonal ferry. Greenland remains logistically unique, and that is part of its charm.

Weather delays are common. Always build in an extra day or two on either end of your itinerary. Greenland teaches flexibility.

Ilulissat: Icebergs That Redefine Scale

Ilulissat was one of the most unforgettable places I experienced. The Ilulissat Icefjord — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is not simply scenic. It is overwhelming.

Ten years ago, I stood quietly on the boardwalk watching ancient ice crack and shift. Boat tours were intimate. I stayed at the luxurious Hotel Arctic, which also had individual glass igloos overlooking the fjord. The food at Restaurant Ulo – fresh snow crabs, halibut, and redfish – was stunning!

Today, Ilulissat remains the crown jewel of Greenland tourism. Infrastructure has improved. There are more organized excursions and an increase in cruise ship arrivals. Yet, the landscape remains primordial. Icebergs the size of skyscrapers still drift silently through Disko Bay.

Nuuk: A Capital Coming Into Its Own

Nuuk used to feel like a sleepy harbor town with colorful houses and a few museums tucked between the hills. Now, it is evolving into a cultural capital.

With the new international airport, Nuuk has seen a rise in boutique accommodations, cafés, and restaurants that showcase modern Greenlandic cuisine — think Arctic char, musk ox, and foraged herbs.

But it is still small. Still intimate. Still framed by mountains and sea.

If you’re wondering whether to spend time in Nuuk or head straight to Ilulissat, my advice is simple: do both. Nuuk gives you cultural grounding. Ilulissat gives you geological awe.

South Greenland: Fjords, Farms, and Norse History

Southern Greenland remains one of the least explored regions — and one of the most rewarding. In towns like Qaqortoq and Narsaq, sheep farms dot rolling green hills in summer. Norse ruins whisper of Viking settlements. Kayaking through fjords feels timeless.

A decade ago, this region felt truly off-grid. It still does — but improved air access will soon make it easier to reach.

If you are searching for a South Greenland itinerary, plan at least four to five days. Distances are deceptive. Travel takes time.

What Has Changed in Greenland in 10 Years?

1. Flights and Accessibility

The most obvious change is direct air service from the United States. Travel time has shortened significantly.

However, capacity remains limited. Flights sell out quickly in peak summer months (June–August). Book early.

2. Hotels and Lodging

Greenland does not have large global luxury chains. What it has are locally owned guesthouses, eco-lodges, and a few well-established hotels like Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat and Hotel Hans Egede in Nuuk.

Availability is tight during summer. Advance reservations are essential.

3. Connectivity and Internet

A decade ago, internet access was sparse and slow. Today, connectivity has improved in major towns. eSIM options are available. However, once you leave urban areas, signal drops quickly.

Do not expect constant connectivity. Greenland encourages digital detox.

Greenland uses the Danish Krone (DKK). Credit cards are widely accepted in towns, but carry some cash for smaller settlements.

Dress in layers. Arctic weather shifts quickly.

Respect wildlife and local culture.

Don’t expect luxury convenience everywhere.
Don’t underestimate weather delays.

In fact, one of my close friends in college often narrated her stories of living in Saudi Arabia. She told me that she cut her hair really short and dressed up as a boy so she could go out and play freely.

Fast forward to my recent trip, and I’m still processing how much has changed and what hasn’t. Saudi Arabia today is in a deliberate, high-speed transition: opening doors to tourism, hosting global events, and actively trying to reshape its international perception. And yet, it still holds onto cultural norms that can feel unfamiliar (and sometimes confusing) to first-time visitors, especially if you’re comparing it to places like Dubai or Doha.

Here’s what it’s like to travel to Saudi Arabia right now through my eyes as a solo female traveler.

Saudi Is Trying to Change Its Perception

I arrived during TOURISE in Riyadh, and it was impossible to ignore the symbolism.

Organizers describe TOURISE as a multi-year global tourism platform that brought together 5,000+ delegates from around the world, including ministers, CEOs, and cultural icons, all under one roof. Some coverage reported a higher number, noting 8,000 registered attendees at the inaugural summit. 

Regardless of which number you use, the message was clear: Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in tourism, not quietly, but loudly. What made it even more significant was its alignment with the 26th United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly, which was also held in Riyadh at the same time. This was the first time ever that the UN Tourism General Assembly — the governing body of the specialized UN agency was held in a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country, with diplomatic delegations from more than 160 member states. I was honored to be a part of it!

What’s Changed for Women (In the Most Practical Ways)

1) You can travel independently and it feels possible

A decade ago, so much of the conversation centered on restrictions. Today, Saudi Arabia is actively marketing itself as welcoming and safe for women travelers, with initiatives and campaigns targeting female visitors and women-led tour experiences. 

Since I arrived in Riyadh a couple of days before the conference, I explored on my own. It was easy to take Uber, though the Arab drivers would mostly greet me with a polite “Salam Walequm” and not make further conversation. Two of my drivers chatted extensively, answering my questions about marriage, work, life in Saudi Arabia, and more.

I never felt uncomfortable walking around the markets or eating alone at restaurants. My waiters, often Indian or Filipino immigrants, were exceptionally friendly and went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed.

2) The tourist visa made a real difference

Saudi Arabia’s rollout of tourism visas was a major turning point. The official eVisa program allows eligible travelers to visit on a one-year, multiple-entry visa and stay up to 90 days. 

Even the U.S. government’s travel guidance reflects that tourist e-visas have been available since 2019 and are generally valid for a year (with stays up to three months). 

Obtaining the visa online was super easy, and when I arrived at Riyadh International Airport, they never even asked for it. I remember when I first visited the UAE in 2005, I had to secure a local sponsor to pay a fee to apply for a visa.

3) Dress code is no longer what people assume

This is one of the biggest misnomers. According to Visit Saudi Arabia, it’s not mandatory for women to wear an abaya or hijab, though modest dress is expected. 
In practice, I dressed modestly in maxi dresses and closed-toe sandals. I packed a lightweight scarf (useful in mosques or conservative areas), but never used it. I saw many Arab women wearing pants and shirts, going to offices and having lunch with their colleagues at restaurants. Overall, I found that most people were more focused on their own lives than on policing dress codes.

4) Women driving is no longer a barrier

Women were prohibited from driving for decades, until the ban was lifted in June 2018. 
That shift matters even if you don’t plan to rent a car; it changes the feeling of a society. And it changes logistics for local women. I saw several women driving through Riyadh’s congested traffic. However, I did not see any women driving taxis or ride-shares.

What Still Exists Today (And You Should Expect It)

Saudi Arabia hasn’t become “the same” as other Middle East destinations, and it isn’t trying to. Certain separations and norms still show up in everyday life.

• “Family” sections on public transport (yes, still a thing)

Even modern metro systems in the region often include family carriages reserved for women, children, and couples—a blend of comfort and tradition. One thing that still surprises first-time visitors: on metro trains and some public transport, signage may list “Singles” and “Families.” Know that “Singles” refers to men traveling alone, while “Families” means for women (whether alone or with children) and mixed-gender groups.

These distinctions are less about exclusion and more about longstanding cultural norms around gendered public space. Still, it’s a reminder that while Saudi Arabia is modernizing rapidly, some social structures remain visibly embedded in everyday life.

• Gender separation still appears in places like gyms and spas

I was very excited to go to the spa at my hotel, but I learned it was for men only. The separate gym for women looked in poor condition. Even at five-star hotels, the gym and pool hours may differ for men and women (often favoring men’s work schedules). Depending on the facility, you may find women-only spaces, women-only hours, or separate entrances.

If you plan to go, look for a women-only spa and fitness center. And expect to wear modest clothing, such as full-coverage swimwear (like burkinis) in pool areas, and comfortable sportswear in fitness zones.

• Alcohol remains a key difference vs. UAE or Bahrain

If you like drinking alcohol on vacation, this is something you will need to adjust to. While there have been recent changes around controlled access in limited settings, alcohol is not broadly available to tourists the way it is in other parts of the Middle East. At my minibar in Riyadh, there was alcohol-free beer, sodas, and juices. Even the fine-dining restaurants I visited offered only mocktails.

According to a new rule introduced at the end of 2025, eligible, wealthy non-Muslim foreign residents will be permitted to purchase beer, wine, and spirits in Saudi Arabia.

Government Moves Aimed at “Progressive + Tourist-Friendly”

Saudi Arabia’s tourism growth isn’t happening by accident; it’s part of a wider national strategy to diversify its economy and invite international visitors. Here are a few initiatives worth knowing about:

1) “Beyond Tourism” with the World Economic Forum

In November 2025, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Tourism and the World Economic Forum launched an initiative called Beyond Tourism, positioning it as a framework to reshape tourism with measurable action around sustainability, inclusion, and resilience. 

2) Expanded e-visa accessibility

Saudi continues widening access to visitor e-visas, a key part of making entry easier and more “normal” for global travelers. 

3) Premium residency expansion (longer-term openness to foreigners)

Saudi Arabia has also been exploring expanded premium residency options to attract talent and high-net-worth visitors—part of the same “open the doors wider” tourism/investment narrative. 

Misnomers About Traveling to Saudi Arabia (That Don’t Match Reality)

Misnomer #1: “It’s unsafe for solo women.”
My experience: I never felt watched or threatened. The front office staff at my hotel always greeted me and asked me about my stay. The tour guides thanked me for my visit. I found people generally respectful (and often curious in a friendly way).

Misnomer #2: “You must wear an abaya and cover your hair.”
Not required for tourists, and most locals have a choice, though modest dress matters. I met many Arab women wearing long dresses and pants, just like me, often draped with open-front silk or velvet abayas.

Misnomer #3: “Saudi is just desert.”
Yes, there’s breathtaking desert—but also heritage sites, coastal cities, futuristic architecture, mountain regions, and a rapidly growing food scene. In one week, I barely scratched the surface of this vast country.

Misnomer #4: “All Middle East countries feel the same.”
I have traveled to most of the Middle East and found that Saudi Arabia is quite different. It is the largest country by area, with diverse landscapes and many immigrants and locals working across all sectors of the economy. Opulence is not in your face, and there are not just high-end shopping malls everywhere. You feel like it’s a country with a soul and its share of problems. Compared with the UAE, it’s more conservative socially. Compared with some places in the Levant, it can feel more structured and rule-forward. That doesn’t make it better or worse, just different.

What To Do in Saudi Arabia (A Quick, Practical Snapshot)

If you’re planning a first trip, these are easy anchors:

• Riyadh: museums, modern dining, big cultural events, and a front-row seat to the country’s transformation
• Jeddah: the Red Sea coastline, historic districts, a more laid-back pace
• AlUla: dramatic landscapes + ancient heritage sites (similar to Jordan’s Wadi Rum and Petra)
• Diriyah: history and heritage experiences near the capital
• Red Sea escapes, and resort developments are expanding quickly (expect more here over the next few years). 

What I’d Tell Other Solo Female Travelers Before They Go

Saudi Arabia currently feels like a country in the middle of intentionally rewriting its own story. If you go and expect it to be “Dubai 2.0,” you’ll be disappointed. If you expect it to be closed-off and unwelcoming, you’ll likely be surprised.

Traveling here as a solo woman requires awareness, cultural respect, and smart planning—but it’s no longer the impossible “no” it once was.

And that’s the point: Saudi is trying to change its perception, and tourism is a major part of how it’s doing it.

If you’ve been paying attention to the headlines, you might think traveling to China right now is complicated, restrictive, or even intimidating. I thought so too—until I went.

As someone who has traveled to over 130 countries, I’ve learned one thing again and again: what you see in the media is often incomplete, exaggerated, or simply untrue. That’s precisely why I travel—to experience places for myself, speak to locals, observe daily life, and form my own opinions. China was no exception.

This recent trip reminded me why firsthand travel matters more than ever. Here’s what it’s actually like to travel to China right now—and why many of the common fears don’t hold up once you’re on the ground.

Myth #1: “The air is polluted everywhere”

Reality: The air was surprisingly clean

Yes, China has struggled with air quality in the past, but that narrative is outdated. In major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xi’an, I experienced clear skies, blue days, and visible investment in green infrastructure. There are lots of green parks. Locals prefer biking, electric vehicles, and public transportation to cars.

China has made massive environmental strides, and as a traveler, you feel it immediately—especially compared to many other global megacities.

Myth #2: “People aren’t friendly to foreigners”

Reality: Locals were curious, kind, and welcoming

I can’t stress enough how welcome I felt while traveling alone through China. From train stations to tea houses, people went out of their way to help—often using translation apps or simple gestures. Everyone welcomed me with smiles, invited me into conversations, and approached me as a local eager to practice English or learn where I was from.

At a shop in Beijing, the store attendant worked long after the shop closed to make sure that she found me the right size. After the main door was shut, the security guard escorted me through the back of the store. He brought me back to the main street and gave me directions back to my hotel.

At my hotel in Chengdu, the front desk staff always made meaningful conversation with me, asking about my travels around the world and my experiences compared to life in China. Many of the hotels sent me welcome gifts of handmade Chinese souvenirs. Most of the shop attendants thought that I was a Bollywood actress and wanted to take photos with me.

Hospitality in China may be quieter and more reserved than in some cultures, but it’s deeply genuine.

My guides, in particular, were very friendly, spoke fluent English, and shared their thoughts and beliefs during our long drives and delicious meals.

Myth #3: “It’s unsafe or overly controlled”

Reality: China felt extremely safe

I walked around cities late at night, used public transport solo, and explored neighborhoods without worry. Violent crime is rare, streets are well-lit, and there’s a strong sense of order.

As for the fear of constant surveillance: no one followed me, questioned me, or interfered with my movements. I wasn’t “tracked,” stopped, or felt uncomfortable. For travelers, daily life feels remarkably normal and calm.

Myth #4: “You can’t use the internet or social media”

Reality: The Great Firewall is barely noticeable for travelers

Yes, China has internet regulations—but for visitors, it’s far less dramatic than portrayed. With the right preparation, staying connected is easy. I was able to communicate, upload content, and work remotely without issue. Even though I downloaded VPN, I barely needed to use it, except when I needed to do some work on my computer.

Hotels, cafés, and public spaces have fast Wi-Fi, and mobile data is reliable. My T-Mobile connection worked everywhere, even for social media apps. Even the locals were checking their Facebook and Instagram regularly. For most travelers, the “Great Firewall” is not a daily obstacle—it’s more of a background footnote.

Myth #5: “China is difficult without cash”

Reality: Cashless travel is seamless and efficient

It is pleasantly surprising to see that China is one of the most advanced cashless societies in the world. Mobile payment apps are accepted everywhere, from luxury hotels to street food vendors. Once set up, paying for trains, meals, taxis, and shopping is incredibly easy.

In fact, it’s one of the smoothest travel experiences I’ve had anywhere. When I returned to the U.S. I really missed the convenience of not having to take out my credit card whenever I went out.

Myth #6: “Chinese food is heavy and meat-centric”

Reality: China is a paradise for vegetarian and healthy eating

This might surprise many travelers: China offers an incredible variety of vegetarian, plant-based, and wellness-focused food. Rooted in Buddhist traditions and regional cooking styles, meals often feature fresh vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, fermented foods, grains, and herbal soups. Actually, I ate mostly vegetarian food during my three weeks traveling around China. And my digestive system really thanked me for the variety of simply cooked fresh vegetables – often steamed or stir-fried, and seasoned with very little spices. I also enjoyed buffets at restaurants attached to monasteries.

From light dumplings and noodle bowls to elaborate temple-style vegetarian feasts, eating well in China was effortless—and delicious.

Other Observations About China:

The New Generation Speaks Freely—Just Differently

Young Chinese are global, informed, and expressive

What surprised me most was how openly young people spoke about their aspirations, frustrations, careers, mental health, and identity. Many are globally educated, well-traveled, digitally savvy, and deeply curious about the world. They openly shared with me their thoughts on the current economic crisis and how it is affecting their ability to get married and settle down. Most marriages depend on the groom having a stable income, owning property, and paying for the wedding expenses. I also learned about how competitive it is for young kids – especially in high school – to perform at the top of their class and score high so they can get into good colleges. This puts a lot of pressure on teenagers to study late into the night and to forego extracurricular activities.

They may not frame discussions the same way Western media does, but they absolutely speak their minds—often thoughtfully and pragmatically.

A Culture That Honors Aging—and Enjoys Life

Older adults are active, social, and visibly joyful

Another striking sight across cities was how engaged older people are with daily life. China has a relatively early retirement age (50-55 for women and 60 for men), and people truly use that time to live.

Parks are filled with seniors practicing Tai Chi, ballroom dancing, playing chess and cards, walking, stretching, and socializing. Fitness is communal, outdoor, and deeply embedded in culture. Aging here feels active, not isolated.

Religious Freedom & Cultural Diversity: A Visit to the Xi’an Mosque

China is far more religiously and culturally layered than many assume

One of the most memorable experiences was visiting the Great Mosque of Xi’an, one of the oldest and most important mosques in China. Located in the historic Muslim Quarter, it blends traditional Chinese architecture with Islamic design—wooden pagoda-style roofs instead of domes, serene courtyards, and Arabic calligraphy alongside Chinese inscriptions.

The mosque was active, peaceful, and open to visitors. Locals prayed, families gathered, and life flowed naturally around it. It was a powerful reminder that Islam has been part of China for over a thousand years, and that religious practice—while culturally distinct—exists openly in many parts of the country. I also visited many Buddhist monasteries across China.

Getting Around China Is a Dream

The high-speed train network is world-class

China’s high-speed rail system is one of the most efficient, clean, and environmentally friendly in the world. Trains are punctual, comfortable, and fast, connecting cities in hours instead of days.

Stations are modern, signage is clear, and the experience rivals (or surpasses) train travel in Europe or Japan. The wagons are cleaned after every stop, no matter how brief. And the attendant brought out a snack cart every few minutes. For travelers, it’s one of China’s biggest strengths.

Did you know that China’s Shanghai magnetic levitation (maglev) train can take you from downtown Shanghai to Pudong International Airport in about 7 minutes and 20 seconds — covering roughly 30 km (about 18.6 miles) at high speed?

There Is No One “China”

China is many cultures, cuisines, landscapes, and people

One of the biggest misconceptions is that China is monolithic. In reality, it’s one of the most diverse countries on Earth. There are 56 recognized ethnic minorities, each with distinct traditions, clothing, languages, and cuisines.

Traveling across China feels like visiting multiple countries in one trip—from snowy mountains to deserts, rice terraces to futuristic skylines. Food changes by province. Architecture shifts dramatically. Even physical features and customs vary widely.

There is no single “Chinese food,” no single “Chinese look,” and no single story.

So, What Is It Like to Travel to China Right Now?

It’s modern, dynamic, and welcoming. And it’s far more nuanced than the headlines suggest.

Traveling to China right now reaffirmed something I deeply believe: the only way to truly understand a place is to experience it yourself. Media narratives rarely capture daily life, human warmth, or cultural complexity.

China challenged my assumptions, surprised me in the best ways, and reminded me why travel is such a powerful tool for empathy, learning, and perspective.

It’s been described as a Caribbean St. Tropez — and since I have been to both, I can attest that’s true. Like its Mediterranean muse, St. Barts attracts a stylish, international crowd, from European tastemakers to Hollywood names. 

New Year’s Eve Vibes: Glamorous, Electric, and (Mostly) Under the Stars

If you ask any seasoned traveler, New Year’s in St. Barts is legendary. However, it’s not the same glitzy spectacle you’d see in Times Square or Ibiza. Instead, it’s a uniquely Caribbean celebration with an elite twist.

During the season — especially late December through early January — the island becomes a magnetic hotspot. Forget cheesy decorations and dressed-up Christmas trees. Jet-setters, luxury yachts, and VIP gatherings converge here for the ultimate party. Hotels, villas, and even yachts anchored in Gustavia Harbor fill up well over a year in advance. Moreover, many properties require a minimum stay of 6–7 nights around New Year’s. 

Celebrities aren’t just a rumor here: St. Barts’ winter crowd regularly includes Hollywood names, fashion power players, and elite tastemakers. It’s the place where bottle service sunsets and beach club lunches feel as effortless as sand between your toes. But get ready to pay big bucks for it!

The energy here is glamorous but relaxed — think Champagne on the sand, not strobe lights in a club. It’s perfect for celebration without sacrificing calm, which makes it surprisingly special for ringing in a new year with intention.

Getting There: It’s Worth Every Mile

St. Barts doesn’t have a big international airport, and that’s part of its allure. You won’t even need to pass through security when you enter the small one-room lobby. Just a friendly immigration officer will greet you in French and welcome you to the island.

Most visitors fly into St. Maarten (SXM) or San Juan (SJU) and then take a flight to St. Barts’ famously short runway. This thrilling 10-minute hop feels like an adventure in itself. 

Alternatively, you can ferry over — a scenic 45-minute ride that’s perfect if you prefer the sea to the sky. 

No matter how you reach it, the approach into St. Barts, especially flying over the harbor, is a mini spectacle with lush green hills and turquoise blue waters as a backdrop. It sets the tone for what’s ahead.

Why I Chose Hotel Manapany — and You Should Too

You can choose the right accommodation on the island depending on what kind of vacation you’re looking for. If you want to be at the heart of the beachfront parties, stay at Eden Rock; if you have a large group of friends to share the cost, rent a sprawling villa. During my stay, I fell in love with the little details that made all the difference. I woke up each morning to practice yoga with an instructor by the beach. Then, we headed to breakfast at the hotel’s signature restaurant overlooking the sea. Could you make sure to look up at the ceilings? The interior looks like the inside of a wooden boat. The food is European: a buffet of fresh-baked croissants, pain au chocolat, cheese, smoked salmon, fruit, and made-to-order eggs.

After a dip in one of the two sea-facing pools (one for adults only) and a relaxing lounge at the beach, we had lunch at the beachfront restaurant. There’s nothing like sipping on Caribbean rum with your toes in the sand, and watching playful resident tortoises go by. If you like seafood, this is a great place to try fried black cod fritters with chili sauce, tuna poke, and fresh-caught giant lobster. For dessert, the melted chocolate cookie served in a cast-iron pan is decadent!

In the room, complementary colorful sandals, plush robes, and straw beach bags invited us to let loose. These comforts made slipping from beach walks to sunset cocktails feel effortless. This is especially precious during a season when most people are rushing to parties or planning their next stop.

Location & Pace — Not Too Loud, Not Too Quiet

Manapany sits in a quieter part of the island, offering peace after evenings out in Gustavia or Nikki Beach — another famed St. Barts institution. There, daytime bottle service and chic guests make for brilliant social energy. For the best views of the harbor, book suite number 220, located at the highest point of the resort.

It’s a perfect home base for celebrating the holiday week. It is close enough to the buzz, yet far enough to sleep in without noise.

Insider Tips: When to Book & How to Plan

St. Barts is small — only about 15 miles — but its popularity is huge. Between Thanksgiving and early January, rooms disappear fast and prices surge like clockwork, especially over Christmas and New Year’s. 

My biggest piece of advice:
 Plan and book at least 9–12 months ahead if you want your first hotel choices and flight times.

Minimum stays are common over the holidays, so flexibility with dates (and a willingness to commit to a week) often unlocks better accommodations.

Driving around the island is easy; taxis are expensive. Make sure to rent a small electric car or a scooter to get around. Nothing on the island is more than a 15-minute drive away.

Things to Do on St. Barts: Where to Swim, Hike, Wander & Savor

What makes St. Barts unforgettable isn’t just the yachts or the nightlife. It’s how reachable nature feels here. Start your mornings with a hike to Colombier Beach. This secluded turquoise cove is accessible only by foot or boat. The trail winds through dry forest and coastal cliffs, revealing postcard views at each turn. It’s the kind of place where you could spend an entire day with a picnic, a book, and the sound of waves as company.

If soft sand calls your name, Gouverneur Beach and Saline Beach are must-visits — both expansive, untouched, and framed by rolling dunes. Shell Beach, conveniently close to Gustavia, glitters with tiny shells and is perfect for sunset swims after a day in town. Each beach has its own personality, whether you want solitude, snorkeling, or gentle waves for floating the afternoon away.

For a taste of island life beyond the shore, wander Gustavia’s harbor, where chic boutiques sit alongside cafés serving morning pastries that rival Paris. Lunches stretch long at Nikki Beach or Shellona, where music spills onto the sand and the people-watching is half the fun. Between beach hopping and dining, stop at St. Jean to watch small planes land dramatically over the bay — a spectacle as thrilling as it is uniquely St. Barts.

If you have wheels, drive the island’s scenic roads. The hairpin turns and steep climbs reward you with panoramic views that feel borrowed from the South of France. And no visit is complete without taking time just to be. Slow ocean swims, gelato by the harbor, sunset glasses of rosé, and barefoot evenings will remind you why travelers return year after year.

St. Barts isn’t a place you “do” — it’s a place you let unfold. Beaches, hikes, wandering, listening — that’s where its magic lives.

El Alto Airport in La Paz sits at 13,325 feet, one of the highest in the world. My oxygen level dropped into the low 70s on arrival, and I spent days battling headaches, nausea, and sleeplessness, while simply walking around felt like a workout.

What helps:

• Plan for one or two days of rest. I am the kind of traveler who hits the ground runnning and has a packed schedule. But Bolivia is not the destination where you should push your body. It is better to just sleep, lay low, and rest for a day, so that you can enjoy the rest of your trip.
• Ascend slowly if you can—ideally stop in a mid-altitude city like Santa Cruz or Sucre first.
• Take acetazolamide (Diamox) with your doctor’s approval, but note: it can cause stomach issues, which hit me hard.
• Drink coca tea (only in the morning as it has caffeine), stay extra hydrated with electrolytes, avoid alcohol (even though Bolivia has amazing wine), and eat light (soups, salads, bread).
• Most guides, tour companies, and hotels have Oxygen cylinders handy to administer to travelers. They can measure your Oxygen levels with just the touch of a button. If your Oxygen reading is 80 or below, make sure to inhale it for 5-10 minutes several times a day.

Altitude sickness can escalate into dangerous conditions like HAPE/HACE. Always prioritize rest and talk to your guide immediately if symptoms worsen.

During my recent visit, my husband visited a private clinic in Uyuni and was hospitalized overnight. He was seen right away, with no wait time. The facilities were clean, the staff was attentive, and the out-of-pocket cost was a small fraction of what it would have cost in the U.S. In La Paz, the doctor came to pur hotel room to check his vitals and consult.

Thankfully, Bolivia has excellent medical care, and they really care for visitors’ well-being. If you do get sick, please ask your driver/ guide to take you to a medical facility as soon as possible.

2. New Bolivian Visa Policy for U.S. Citizens — Be Prepared for Long Lines

You can get visa on arrival. Bolivia recently reintroduced visa requirements for U.S. travelers, and the process is not fast. When I arrived, the immigration line moved at a glacial pace as travelers scrambled to fill out forms at 4:30am, hunt for missing documents, and sort through payment issues.

You will need to carry:

• Passport valid for at least six months. A copy of your passport.
• A passport size photo
• A printed hotel reservation and itinerary
• Printed bank statement
• Yellow fever vaccination card (they may or may not ask, but bring it)
• 160 USD (cash is best)

Note that the immigration officer will keep all your paperwork. Processing times vary from 1-2 hours, even though lines are not long. Be patient and don’t question the system. If you’re connecting onward, book a long layover.

As of December 1, 2025, Bolivia announced that U.S. citizens will no longer need a visa, but it’s unclear when this will take effect.

3. Limited Airline Connections — Getting In and Around Bolivia Is Hard

Bolivia’s geographic isolation means flight options are limited. There is only one nonstop flight from the U.S. (from Miami on BOL), and even within South America, only a few carriers serve major cities in Bolivia.

Important realities:

• Most of our flights within Bolivia were delayed at least by an hour, but never canceled, though it is not uncommon.
• Domestic flights are limited, so you may be forced to spend a few days at each destination.
• If you need to decesend to lower altitude, evacuate, or have an emergency, it may not be possible to fly out right away.
• Flights to and within Bolivia are super expensive. Unfortunately, it prevent Bolivians from traveling abroad.
• There are no SkyTeam or Star Alliance options that make repositioning easy.
• Weather can ground flights without warning, especially in La Paz and Uyuni.

When I needed to get out of La Paz earlier due to altitude issues, finding a same-day flight to anywhere was impossible. I purchased a next-day one-way ticket from La Paz to Lima (1.5-hour flight) for over $600 per passenger! I also had to send the airline a bank statement to prove that I had purchased the flight, or they would have cancelled my reservation.

Build flexibility into your plans, and avoid tight connections.

4. Expect Limited Tourism Infrastructure in Bolivia

Bolivia is one of the least developed tourism destinations in South America. That’s part of its charm—but also part of the challenge.

You may experience:

• Unusual paths including barge crossing over the lake, a hike to get to your lodge, steep steps and cable car rides
• Minimal medical facilities, especially outside tourist destinations
• Few English-speaking staff
• Simple accommodations, except for a handful of boutique and salt-flat hotels
• Even the 5-star hotels were sub-par at best
• Unpaved roads, long drive times, and minimal signage

The country was cut off politically and economically for decades, and tourism development is only recently starting to grow. Surprisingly, my T-Mobile connection worked very well, and the WiFi at most hotels was super fast.

If you’re expecting Peru-level tourism infrastructure, Bolivia will surprise you.

5. Bring Layers — The Weather Is Unpredictable

Temperatures in the Altiplano change dramatically throughout the day. I went from wearing a down jacket at sunrise on the salt flats to sweating in a t-shirt by midday.

Pack:

• A warm down or synthetic jacket
• Moisture-wicking base layers
• Sunscreen (the UV is intense at high elevation). You will get sunburned within a couple of hours.
• Gloves, scarf, and hat for early mornings. Hot Hands are my go-to!
• A rain layer during the wet season (Dec–March)
• Bring a soft-sided backpack or duffel bag for the times when mules will be transporting your luggage (such as during my stay at Sun Island on Lake Titicaca)

6. Cash Is King in Bolivia — Cards Are Not Always Accepted

ATMs exist, but they often run out of money or reject foreign cards. One of the ATMs I used in La Paz completed my transaction but did not dispense cash. I had to file a dispute with the local bank, which was an ordeal in itself. Small towns like Uyuni, Copacabana, or Isla del Sol are overwhelmingly cash-based. You will also get better exchange rates and negotiated pricing.

Bring cash for:

• Restrooms (1-5 boliviano per use)
• Food stalls for bottle water and snack
• Local artisan purchases
• Tips for guides and drivers (Most accept USD as well)

Best to bring $100 bills, and exchange it for Bolivian boliviano at one of the local shops. The exchange rate is as much as 30% higher when you have larger bills.

Most hotels, restaurants, and nicer shops accept credit cards, but may build in a transaction fee and offer lower conversion rates. The same thing was more expensive when paying by credit card than when paying in cash.

7. Food Is Fresh and Simple — But Your Stomach Might Rebel

Bolivian cuisine is hearty and comforting—think quinoa soups, potatoes, lake trout, and colorful produce. But between altitude, new bacteria, and limited refrigeration in remote areas, it’s easy for your stomach to get upset.

Tips:

• Eat cooked foods, especially in rural areas.
• Avoid heavy meals for the first 24–48 hours at altitude.
• Carry electrolytes and ginger chews.

My stomach rumbled for days after taking altitude medication, so go slow.

But for the most part, I loved Bolivian food!

8. Expect Authenticity — No Gloss, No Gimmicks

Unlike other South American destinations, Bolivia hasn’t been overrun by mass tourism. You’ll still see:

• Aymara women in traditional pollera skirts everywhere
• Families herding llamas across golden plains
• Villages where people speak only Quechua or Aymara
• Handmade crafts, not imported souvenirs
• Unfiltered glimpses of everyday Andean life

It’s refreshing, grounding, and culturally rich—something scarce in 2025.

9. The Rewards Are Extraordinary — Unlike Anywhere Else on Earth

Despite the hurdles, Bolivia is one of the most astonishing countries I’ve visited in 130+ countries.

Don’t miss:

Salar de Uyuni

The world’s largest salt flat—an endless white desert where the horizon disappears. Islands made of fossilized coral and 1,000-year-old cacti rise unexpectedly from the salt. Sunrise and sunset are surreal, and private lunches on the flats feel magical and otherworldly.

Lake Titicaca

The birthplace of the Inca civilization. Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna offer ancient temples, terraced farms, and sweeping views over sapphire waters.

La Paz

A chaotic, colorful city cradled between Andean peaks. Ride the cable cars (Mi Teleférico) for the best views in South America.

The Altiplano + Eduardo Avaroa Reserve

From flamingo-filled red lagoons to smoking geysers and Dali-like rock formations, this region feels like stepping onto another planet.

My partner and I traveled deep into the Peruvian Amazon with Rainforest Expeditions, one of Go Eat Give’s partners in Peru, to the Tambopata Research Center, one of three eco-lodges they operate. It’s not just any lodge; it’s pristine, remote, and nestled deep in the Tambopata National Reserve, hours from the nearest town, where my nightly entertainment (normally a true crime podcast or murder mystery book) was replaced by the sound of howler monkeys and macaws.

Planes, Buses and Boats to The Amazon

The trip began with a short flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado, followed by a one-hour bus through the forest. Along the way, a short film played on board, introducing Rainforest Expeditions’ conservation, ecotourism, and community collaboration work. It was a good reminder that travel here isn’t just about what you take away, it’s about what you give back

After reaching the port, we had a 2.5-hour boat ride down the Tambopata River. It was here that the adventure truly began. Our guide, Dino, greeted us at the doc. We quickly came to learn that this man was a walking encyclopedia of the jungle and easily one of the kindest humans we’ve ever met.

Within minutes, the forest started showing off, flocks of birds overhead, a capybara sunbathing by the riverbank, and caimans blending effortlessly into the shallows. The journey didn’t feel like transportation; it felt like initiation.

Arriving in the Peruvian Amazon

After the most peaceful boat ride of my life (I even managed a quick nap and didn’t experience my usual bout of motion sickness), stepping onto the dock felt like entering another world. We were greeted with cool towels and fresh juice before being given a tour of the research center – wooden walkways elevated above the forest floor, open-air spaces that blur the line between indoors and out.

Our room was a dream: a spacious open-air bungalow complete with an outdoor shower, jacuzzi tub, and a private balcony overlooking the forest. No windows. No screens. Just a wooden barrier separates us from the jungle. It was luxury and wilderness in perfect harmony.

Creepy Crawly Night Walk in The Amazon

After a delicious dinner made with locally sourced ingredients, we kicked off our first official activity: a night walk. Dino kindly handed us extra flashlights, as we were underprepared, thinking our phone flashlights would be enough, and led us into the dense forest (thank goodness for Dino). 

What we found was a thriving nocturnal world, grasshoppers, bugs disguised as sticks (I believe the official name is in fact Walkingsticks), colorful beetles, and more tarantulas than I ever thought I’d encounter in a lifetime (at least eight). Then came the real surprise: a brilliantly colored snake, which Dino explained was one of the most venomous in South America. His excitement matched our adrenaline and fear. “I haven’t seen one of these in months!” he said. 

We ended the night with hot tea back at the lodge, the forest still humming outside our room. With an early 4 a.m. wake-up ahead, we called it a night.

Sunrise with Macaws

Before sunrise, we boarded a small boat to visit one of Rainforest Expeditions’ most iconic sites, the Macaw Clay Lick. As the first light stretched across the river, we arrived and set up Dino’s telescope, waiting quietly as hundreds of scarlet, blue, and green macaws descended on the clay banks, creating a kaleidoscope of color and sound. Dino explained that the clay’s minerals help the macaws neutralize toxins in their diet —a ritual they repeat every morning —and today we got to experience it with them. 

After capturing a few (in my opinion) National Geographic–worthy shots, we enjoyed breakfast right there on the riverbank as the macaws continued their show. By 7 a.m., we had already witnessed something unforgettable.

Howlers on a Hike

Later that morning, we returned to the lodge and set out on a daytime hike through the surrounding forest. We finally spotted the howler monkeys we’d been hearing since arrival, red, curious, and entirely unbothered by our presence while we stood there in awe. 

We ended our walk by climbing the canopy tower, a structure rising above the treetops with panoramic views of the rainforest. From above, the forest stretched endlessly, dense, alive, and buzzing with life. A pair of macaws (lifelong mates —how cute) perched nearby with their baby, unknowingly putting on a show for us. 

Post Dinner Porcupine

That evening, over another freshly cooked meal, Dino invited us for one final night walk. This time, in addition to the usual bugs from the evening before, we spotted a porcupine, a rare sighting even for him. His fascination was contagious, reminding me that curiosity doesn’t fade, even when the rainforest is your office. 

After the walk, we had our nightly tea (and some wine) and got ready for our final night sleeping in the rainforest, making sure to take advantage of all our amenities. Did I mention the wildlife may also follow you into your room? Remember, it’s their home, not yours, so be grateful they are willing to share it with you.

Echos of the Jungle

As we packed the next morning, I found myself wishing for just one more morning of jungle sounds. Rainforest Expeditions’ commitment to conservation is everywhere you look, from the solar-powered operations to their partnerships with local communities and researchers. Every guest visit helps fund scientific studies and protect endangered habitats.

Their sustainability work goes far beyond tourism. Through initiatives like native regenerative planting and eco-education programs, they actively restore ecosystems and invest in the future of the Amazon.

For travelers, that means you’re not just a visitor, you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself. 

After one final boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado, the staff arranged a taxi town so we could grab lunch before our flight. A small but thoughtful gesture that summed up the entire experience: personal, intentional, and full of care.

Travel with a heart

In just two short nights, the Tambopata Research Center reinvigorated my passion for travel that gives back. It wasn’t just a trip; it was a chance to reconnect with the world, learn, and support the people working tirelessly to protect it. It was a good reminder that adventure and sustainability don’t exist at odds and can, in fact, elevate one another. 

If you’re heading to Peru, make sure the Amazon and the Tambopata Research Center are on your list. Go for the wildlife, stay for the one-of-a-kind experience, and leave knowing your visit had a real impact.

Haida Gwaii Today

Today, there are 3,674 islands and islets in Haida Gwaii, and 1,884 islands/islets in Gwaii Haanas, scattered across an area with over 600 known archaeological sites. As you step onto the soft, springy moss in the dense rainforest, your lungs expand with the purity of the air, while your vision is overwhelmed by the endless hues of green and flashes of blue light breaking through the canopy. Chances are, you may not find another soul in sight, as well as no cell signals and no noise pollution, only the steady rhythm of your heartbeat and the crunch of your own footsteps. You may find yourself pausing often, gazing up at 500-year-old giants: towering hemlocks, red cedars, and Sitka spruce that dwarf you in their ancient stillness. 

Haida Gwaii is the perfect destination to immerse yourself in nature, unplug from modern life, and learn from one of the oldest living civilizations about how humans and nature have coexisted in harmony for thousands of years. 

When to visit Haida Gwaii?

The most reliable time is between June 1 and September 30, when ferry crossings from Prince Rupert are frequent, tourist services operate at full capacity, and the weather is comparatively stable. During winter, the weather becomes unpredictable and access becomes more variable, especially over the turbulent Hecate Strait.

How to get there?

The easiest way to reach Haida Gwaii is by flight – into the small airports at Sandspit (on Moresby Island) or Skidegate (on Graham Island). Most flights operate year-round between BC. (Vancouver, Campbell River, Prince Rupert) and Haida Gwaii. You can also hop on BC Ferries from Prince Rupert. Within the islands, rental cars or shuttle services are the primary modes of transport, as public transit is virtually nonexistent. 

What’s the best way to see Haida Gwaii?

The remote sites of Haida Gwaii—particularly Gwaii Haanas and SG̱ang Gwaay, are most readily accessed by boat or floatplane. Board a specialized cruise, such as Maple Leaf Adventures’ 7-9 day tours, for a comprehensive immersion of land and water-based natural and indigenous history, ecological and wildlife education, in an all-inclusive and comfortable format. The small ships limit group size, enhance intimacy, reduce environmental footprint, and foster meaningful interactions with Haida culture and wilderness.

Where to stay in Haida Gwaii?

If you choose not to cruise, you can stay on Haida Gwaii but will need to opt for boat tours, fishing charters, or day trips to explore much of the area. 

Because Haida Gwaii is remote and relatively undeveloped, lodging is often intimate, family-run, and deeply tied to the place. Options range from Indigenous-owned cultural lodges to simple seaside motels and rustic campsites. Owned and operated by the Haida Nation, Haida House at Tllaal (Tlell, Graham Island) offers intimate and luxurious rooms at its cedar-clad lodge and oceanfront cabins. Other options in Daajing Giids / Queen Charlotte) include the Premier Creek Lodging, an inn dating back to 1910, or the centrally located Sea Raven Motel. 

What are some things to do in Haida Gwaii?

Understand that Haida Gwaii consists of a group of islands, and some of the activities are inaccessible by road. You can explore some of the land-based attractions Skidegate and Naikoon Provincial Park.

On land, get an overview of Haida culture at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay in Skidegate, which also houses the Haida Gwaii Museum. Here, you can learn about the monumental cedar longhouses and the towering poles that once fronted ancient villages. 

On Graham Island, walk the trails in Naikoon Provincial Park through old-growth spruce and cedar to windswept beaches where bald eagles wheel overhead. The Tow Hill Boardwalk Trail concludes with sweeping views over North Beach, a prime spot for watching migrating birds. Offshore, boat tours from Skidegate and Queen Charlotte (Daajing Giids) give access to whales, sea lions, and porpoises. Who Are The Haida Watchmen?

To go deeper into living heritage, join guided boat trips to visit the Haida Gwaii Watchmen – stewards stationed at remote heritage sites across the islands, such as Tanu, Hotspring Island (Gandll K’in Gwaay.yaay), and S’gang Gwaay. Living in solitude through the summer, the Watchmen tend to the forest paths and guard the remnants of sacred villages, where intricately carved longhouses still whisper of the past. Their presence ensures the protection of cultural treasures and limits the number of guests. The Watchmen are often proud of their Haida heritage and eager to share stories, oral histories, and explanations of totem designs with visitors.

Approach totem poles or other cultural objects with reverence, observe signage and guidance from Haida hosts, and support local Indigenous-run ventures, including tours, arts, and crafts markets. Tuck Shop + Island Cuisine Restaurant

This mother-daughter duo, Alicia and Audrey Tucker, serve hearty Bermudian classics in Southampton. Island Cuisine is celebrating 20 years in business, making it a true staple of the community. Order the Codfish Breakfast (Codfish and Potatoes): The national breakfast of Bermuda — with salted cod served with boiled potatoes, banana, avocado (called “pear” locally), boiled egg, and Johnny bread or toast. It can be eaten plain or “scrambled” together with butter and tomato/onion sauce.

Wild Herbs N Plants of Bermuda

At Clearwater Beach, chef and author, Dr. Doreen Williams-James, a funeral director turned herbalist, leads tours teaching visitors how the island’s natural bounty is used for food, drink, and wellness. Doreen, a resident of the island who grew up learning about the native plants and flowers from her grandmother. She told us that they had practically everything they needed to survive, and thrive, growing around, and if you looked hard enough, you could find plenty of nourishment in nature. During the pandemic, when Doreen had more time and craved to be outdoors, she reinstated her passion for foraging and started leading tours and taking kids to learn more about natural foods. We went to Cooper Island Nature Reserve where we found Nurstusiam, Wild mustard greens, allspice (used in jerk chicken), castor plant (to extract oil),  Bermuda hickory trees (with edible hearts of palm), prickly pear,  Aloe Vera, and much more. 

Gas Station Bodegas

Even Bermuda’s gas stations and corner bodegas double as food stops, offering quick bites and locally made treats you won’t find anywhere else. Homemade yeast and chicken flavored popcorn, served in clear plastic bags, is a cult favorite at gas stations like RUBiS and Esso stops across the island. Wash it down with a chilled bottle of Swizzle, Bermuda’s national cocktail of rum, citrus, and fruit juice, now conveniently sold as a ready-to-drink soda-style beverage or a Goslings Dark n Stormy rum and ginger beer in a can.

For something sweet, try a scoop of house-made sherbet—a frosty, fruity dessert often sold in take-out cups from roadside shops like Ice Queen in Paget. And of course, no trip is complete without a taste of Bermuda’s ginger beer, a fiery-sweet soft drink made by the island’s iconic brand Barritt’s, which has been quenching locals’ thirst since 1874. Labadi Beach Hotel, a Ghanaian-owned institution since the 1990s, is set on the Atlantic shore with gardens that buffer the buzz of the city. Breakfast was a mix of fresh pawpaw, pineapple, and fried yam chips alongside waakye (rice and beans in a leaf wrap). The hotel’s balance of comfort and Ghanaian tradition was the perfect base. Many celebrities have stayed at Labadi Beach Hotel during their visit to Accra.

Visiting a Ghanian casket maker is one of the best ways to see how traditional carpentry blends with local art to represent the Ghanaian beliefs in afterlife. The artist – Erico, told us that people commission their own caskets while they are living to depict their professional, aspirations or something that they love. You can see bright and colorful caskets in shapes of airplanes, and even beer bottles!

Cultural Highlights Around Accra

Make sure to check out some of the rich heritage of Old Accra and major attractions around the city.

• The National Museum of Ghana – It’s the best place in Accra to trace Ghana’s story from ancient Nok terracottas and Ashanti gold weights to post-independence art, all under one roof. You will see the cultural diversity of the country.
• Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum – Mausoleum and museum honoring Ghana’s first president and the spirit of independence. It is interesting to learn about the legendary hero who helped create diplomacy between Ghana and many countries around the world.
• Osu Castle/ Fort Christiansborg – Its not really a castle, but a modest and unkept whitewashed fort that once housed the government of the Gold Coast under the Scandinavian rule. Visiting also helps piece the story about the slave trade. If you want to learn more about the “castles of Ghana” read the book ‘Homegoing’ by Yaa Gyasi.
• James Fort – Crumbling relics of Accra’s colonial past. Unfortunately, the buildings are not very well kept. But you can get a glimpse into the dark chapters of West African history and watch the nooks and crannies around one of the busiest slave trade routes. James Fort and Ussher Fort in Jamestown are UNESCO Heritage sites.

Dive Into Makola Market

With my guide, I explored Makola Market, the largest open-air market in Accra. On your own, the labyrinth of alleys can feel overwhelming — endless rows of spices, towers of dried fish, and fabric stalls tucked into corners. My guide introduced me to a textile seller who explained how to distinguish quality batik from cheaper imports. We ducked in and out of shaded stalls, learning that in Ghana, shopping is equal parts transaction and relationship.

It may feel chaotic to walk through such a chaotic market, but a local guide can be helpful in navigating around the streets and peddlers. The best time to visit is in the morning (8–10am, Tuesday–Saturday) when vendors are setting up and the heat is bearable.

Private Culinary Experience with Chef PaJohn Bentsifi Dadson

One of the highlights of my trip to Accra was a private dinner experience with Chef PaJohn, a fixture in Ghana’s food scene. Chef PaJohn welcomed us to his home where we sat at the Bohemian decorated rooftop talking about the history of ingredients and dishes from West Africa to the southeast United States. He prepared many of the traditional dishes – such as smoked mackerel, waakye (rice and black eyes peas), garri fortor (grated cassava with fried plantain). Each of them were created with a modern twist and elegant plating. We ate several courses of delicious food, drank wine and chatted for hours.

Chef PaJohn “WangoWango” culinary philosophy and curated travel experience are offered through his  Native Adventures. It celebrates is the joy of food, by combining immersive cultural experiences with meals sourced and prepared locally, blending storytelling, culinary craft, and sustainable tourism.

Day 2: Culture, Crafts, and Connection

A Naming Ceremony I’ll Never Forget

The next morning, I was welcomed into a private home courtyard for a traditional Akan naming ceremony. Elders dressed me and my husband in all white clothing, with white beaded jewelry. Then the entire community, included priests and mayors came to bless us and welcome us to the family. They poured libations, drummers set a steady rhythm, and I was given the name Naa Aku – which means “She is rich through smart and hard work. Loved by many due to her eagerness and smiles at all times”. The priest had already consulted with the Gods about what our names should be, before even meeting us. We sat around the table enjoying snacks and having deep conversations about spirituality, culture and humanity. We felt more like a family member, than a tourist.

The ritual was both intimate and communal, a reminder that travel isn’t just about observing culture but participating in it with respect.

Shopping with Purpose

At Global Mamas, a fair-trade women’s cooperative, I watched artisans stamping wax into cloth and laying batik fabrics in the sun to dry. Each piece came labeled with the woman who made it. Shopping here wasn’t about souvenirs — it was about livelihoods.

At the Arts Centre, bargaining was playful and respectful, with each negotiation ending in smiles. Its a good place to buy local art, fabrics, and wood carvings.

Sample bean-to-bar chocolates and truffles at Bioko. Make sure to take some chocolate covered cashews and hazelnuts back home for gifts.

Eating Accra: Where to Savor the Local Flavors

There is a wide range of restaurants in Accra serving everything from fine French cuisine to food trucks, pastry shops to street foods. If you dare to dive into the local cuisine, go to one of the restaurants where they serve huge portions of soups, stews, and fufu at very low prices. You will find yourself at a shared table, washing your hands in buckets right at your seat, eating with your hands, and listening to upbeat Ghanian music.

Note that dining in Accra is not cheap, as the taxes can really add up. With VAT, service charge and Ghana tourism levy, you will often pay 33% more on top of your bill.

• Buka Restaurant (Osu): Smoky jollof rice and goat skewers served in a lively courtyard.
• Chez Clarisse: Char-grilled tilapia dusted with chili, served with cassava attiéké.
• Street Eats: Kelewele — spiced plantains fried on the roadside — were fiery, caramelized, and unforgettable.
• For local coffee in a fun ambiance, go to one of the Jamestown Coffee Co locations.

Why I Traveled with Kensington Tours

Accra is exhilarating, but traveling in West Africa can also be daunting. Streets are packed, schedules are fluid, and experiences like a naming ceremony or private cooking session aren’t accessible without introductions. What Is a Cesarine Experience?

Cesarine connects travelers with local hosts across Italy who open their homes for cooking classes, shared meals, and food tours. Think of it as Italy’s oldest community of “home restaurants” — a way to step behind the curtain of trattorias and taste authentic family recipes passed down for generations.

Founded in 2004 by Professor Egeria di Nallo from the University of Bologna, the movement set out to preserve regional traditions at a time when globalization threatened to homogenize food culture. Today, Cesarine spans 450+ Italian cities, from big names like Rome, Florence, and Venice to smaller gems like Parma, Lecce, and Bologna.

My Evening in Rome: Artful Italian

In Rome, I met Ofelia Sisca, my host, at a luxurious apartment in the Trastevere neighborhood. As soon as we walked in, Ofelia and her partner made us feel like we were visiting old friends. As both of them worked in art and design, their apartment was beautifully decorated with their collection of paintings and art pieces.

Back in her kitchen, Ofelia rolled out plates of food. We started with deep fried potate croquettes with lemon zest and mint; fried mozzarella with zucchini and fresh peas sauce; delicate vegetable consommé with rice balls; homemade tonnarelli cacao e pepe pasta; as well as homemade semifreddo, merengue, and chiacchiere di carnevale (funnel cakes). Ofelia told us that she enjoyed cooking dishes she learned from her grandmother in Calabria, and adding her own twist to them. She had been compiling her recipes in a beautiful cookbook that she hopes to publish soon. When I asked her about her experience with Cesarine, she said she had hosted over 500 dinners and now had friends practically everywhere in the world!

We were so stuffed by Ofelia’s amazing food, but more so with her interesting conversations. Visiting a local home in Rome and seeing how people live, work and eat gave me such a unique perspective that most tourists don’t ever get to have.

Venice: Pasta, Laughter, and Stories

In Venice, the experience was just as magical but entirely different. My Cesarine host, Giulia Raccanelli and her husband Massimo picked us up from our hotel. Together, we walked through the narrow streets of Venice, a city she had grown up and lived in most of her life. She pointed to Campo Santa Margherita Area, a local market off the beaten path where she often does tours. We stopped at floating markets where street vendors sold all kinds of artichokes right from their gondolas. Giulia picked out a few kinds, which the vendors peeled, chopped and packed in minutes. Then we went to a cheese shop and bakery to purchase fritteli (traditional Carnival cookies). We carried our groceries to their family-owned apartment overlooking a narrow canal.

Over the next several hours, we drank glasses of aperitifs, cooked and ate, laughed and joked. We munched on fresh bread with olive oil, stuffed pies and cookies. Giulia taught us how to make pasta from scratch, served with cacao e pepe sauce so divine. We removed buds of fresh zucchini flowers, stuffed them with ricotta, tied them with chives, and baked them in the oven. The purple artichokes, we marinated with olive oil, parsley, salt and garlic, and pan fried them on the stove top. And we made small cups of tiramisu that were ready to eat in just a few hours. Between stirring pots, Giulia explained how she joined Cesarine to practice her English, meet new people, and to share her passion for cooking.

When the church bells rang in the distance and the gondolas glided past, I realized this wasn’t just a cooking class — it was a masterclass in Venetian life.

It keeps alive recipes and traditions that might otherwise vanish, while fostering cultural exchange between Italians and travelers.

For me, it solved something I’d felt in Italy before: that eating in restaurants, while wonderful, can sometimes feel like you’re just scratching the surface. Sitting at someone’s table, clinking glasses, hearing their stories — that’s the Italy I’ll remember.

Final Thoughts

Traveling in Italy is always about food, but with Cesarine, it becomes about connection. Whether it’s kneading pasta dough at an apartment in Venice, toasting to a glass of prosecco in Rome, or tasting tortellini in Bologna, the memories go far beyond the plate.

Nat Hab’s Tundra Buggy Lodge is a mobile, eco‑friendly hotel on wheels accommodating 30 guests. Situated right on the edge of the ice, it combines the warmth of a comfortable lodge with the mobility of a tundra buggy. Each train berth like cabin is super small but cute. You will have your own bunk bed and space to store your luggage, as well as a door. Showers and toilets are shared with other passengers.

If you feel claustrophobic or have trouble climbing steps, it could be challenging to stay at the Tundra Buggy. Instead, you can opt to stay at a lodge in the town of Churchill.

You can lounge, dine and attend lectures in another wagons – all connected and on wheels. There’s a viewing deck in the back, so you never miss a moment—whether it’s a young curious attracted by the smell of salmon cooking for dinner, or the aurora borealis dancing above your head as soon as you finish supper.

One of my favorite moments was lying in my bunk bed and watching the northern lights right from my window every night. There’s something surreal about trying to fall asleep, only to peek outside to see the sky performs a light show so spectacular.

Polar Rovers: Witnessing Wildlife with a Conscience

Daily excursions aboard the custom-built Polar Rovers elevate the wildlife viewing experience to a new level. These robust, all-terrain vehicles are the ideal vantage point for navigating the rugged landscape, without causing much impact. But they also have plenty of space to roam around, sit for lunch, and a functional bathroom on board.

We spent most of our days on the Rovers looking for bears and hearing the expert naturalist share the nuances of polar bear behavior and the delicate ecology of the region. Whenever we did encounter a polar bear, which was a lot, we observed their antics in silence for hours! Encounters are intimate, yet conducted with the utmost respect for the animals’ space and well-being. From observing a mother bear teaching her cubs to seeing massive, solitary males patiently awaiting the sea ice, every moment is a humbling testament to the power of nature, framed by Nat Hab’s unwavering commitment to ethical wildlife tourism.

Up Close with Polar Bears: What to Expect on the Safari

Nat Hab guides know the land like the backs of their hands. Our expedition leaders—all of whom grew up in Canada—navigated the bumpy tundra trails in oversized vehicles designed to tread lightly on the fragile permafrost. From heated interiors, we could lean out through drop‑down windows as curious bears ambled close, sniffing the frosty air and occasionally standing on their hind legs to get a better look at us.

Polar bears are often skittish, but curious. They may take some time to show interest in us, and will decide first, if it is worth their energy to come closer to the vehicle. If you wait long enough, you may be able to get a close up shot of a bear walking alongside the Rover or the Buggy. I saw several! But do not make sudden movements, speak loudly or use flash photography, or you would scare them away. Also, never get out of the vehicle! Polar bears are carnivores animals.

Seeing a wild polar bear for the first time is a visceral experience. Their sheer size, power and intelligence are humbling. Yet they are also vulnerable, which is why Nat Hab works with conservation groups to ensure that our presence doesn’t disrupt the bears’ natural behaviors. We maintained a respectful distance, our guides shutting off engines whenever bears approached, letting them decide how close to come.

Besides The Bears

Keep an eye out for other Arctic wildlife living in the Tundra too. Along with polar bears, we may see caribou, Arctic fox, and Arctic hare. Spot birdlife including ravens, ptarmigan, greater yellowlegs, snow buntings, northern harrier, gyrfalcon and various waterfowl all making appearances throughout the journey.

We went dog sledding at Wapusk Adventures where Dave rescues all breeds of dogs and trains them for dog sledding. Listening to him talk about parenting abandoned dogs, giving them massages and psychotherapy, and understanding their personalities—is very special.

We also shopped for t-shirts and souvenirs at locally owned gift shops in downtown Churchill. Some of the ones I recommend are Fifty Eight North, Great White Bear Tours, and Arctic Trading Company. At The Dancing Bear, we enjoyed a hot lunch of homemade soup, sandwiches and cookies.

There are beautiful murals around town, especially the one outside the polar bear jail near the airport.

You can also take a helicopter ride over the tundra and spot wildlife. My adventure was cancelled due to bad weather.

You will need to fly to Winnipeg first and take a charter flight to Churchill, which is located across the state. Fun fact: The beloved fictional character was named after a real-life female black bear named “Winnipeg,” or “Winnie” for short. Today, you can find a statue of Lieutenant Colebourn and Winnie in Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, commemorating this incredible story.

Plan to spend at least a day or two in this metropolitan city. There are plenty of museums, food halls, cultural centers and parks to keep you entertained. Stay at The Fort Garry Hotel, one of the few remaining chateau style hotels of Canada from 1913 along the Grand Trunk Railway. The hotel has lovely historic architecture, with renovated rooms and even a spa with a hammam. It is centrally located so you can walk out to the riverfront, The Exchange District, The Forks National Historic Site, Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the Manitoba Museum. Make sure to try poutine and Slurpee. Winnipeg is called the Slurpee Capital of the World.

Walking the ‘Aina: A Taste of Tradition

Executive director and local conservationist, Stacy Sproat, welcomed us with fresh banana bread, tropical fruits and tea. She then led us, a curious bunch, through the 1,600-acre ahupuaʻa (traditional Hawaiian land division) of Waipā. We learned about the intricate system of loʻi kalo (taro patches), the staple crop of the Hawaiian diet. Sproat told us about the environmental impact of rerouting water bodies, adding fertilizers, and over harvesting the lands that the native Hawaiian revered. We learned about the cultivation process, from planting the huli (taro shoots) to the eventual pounding of poi (a traditional taro paste). We also got our hands dirty and helped plant and harvest. If you have more time, you can stay and volunteer at Waipā.

But the Food Pathways Tour extends beyond taro. You can explore the diverse gardens bursting with Polynesian canoe crops like breadfruit, sweet potato, and ti leaf, all grown using traditional and sustainable methods. It’s a great opportunity for all ages to learn about the medicinal properties of native plants and the interconnectedness of the ecosystem. Afterwards, you will be rewarded with a healthy and nutritious lunch using all the ingredients from the farm and surrounding area. We tasted kalo nuggets, taro and kale salad, vegetable rice paper rolls, and delectable taro cheesecake. It was a truly holistic experience, highlighting the deep respect for the ‘āina (land) that is central to Hawaiian culture.

Just a few minutes from Waimea, you can visit the famous Waimea Canyons, aka the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” Take a day-long scenic drive through Koke’e State Park, which offers tons of opportunities for hiking and photography. From the top most point in the Park, you can also see the best views of the NaPali coastline. On the way back, stop at Kekaha Beach, one of Hawaii’s longest white-sand beaches.

Many restaurants on Kauai embrace the farm-to-table movement, showcasing the island’s fresh ingredients in creative and delicious ways. One of my personal favorites is ʻUmeke Kitchen + Bar located at Kukui’ula, where Executive Chef Ben Takahashi and his culinary team deliver a “Kauaʻi Elevated” Hawaiian Regional cuisine with a strong farm-to-fork and ocean-to-table ethos. All the food is sourced from The Farm (Kukuiʻula’s own 10-acre organic farm), local fishermen, ranchers, and purveyors. The sprawling 1,010-acre exclusive club and resort community features exquisitely landscaped grounds that include a championship golf course, a massive multi-tiered pool complex with cascading waterfalls, a working organic farm, and one of the most beautiful spas I have seen, all designed with lush tropical flora and sweeping views towards the ocean.

Also, the luxury resort Timbers Kauaʻi at Hōkūala is deeply committed to sustainability. It’s a great spot to enjoy the sunset and see the famous lighthouse. The resort’s oceanfront restaurant, Hualani’s, embodies a “farm-to-table” ethos, crafting seasonal menus from the daily harvest of its own gardens and collaborations with local Kauai farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. Try the Dynamite Kona Kampachi, Chili Crunch Poke, and Signature Pupu – Whole Fried Local Hawaiian Fish (perfect for sharing).

Kauai is blessed with fertile land, and its farmers markets are a vibrant showcase of fresh, seasonal produce. Years later, he found his true family when a herd of elephants, rescued from the perilous political climate in Zimbabwe in 2002, were brought to Kapama. This remarkable group, largely orphaned themselves due to culling operations, welcomed Jabulani, forming the unique and close-knit Jabulani Herd we see today.

This herd’s willingness to accept new members is what makes Jabulani and HERD so vital. They provide a second chance for orphaned elephant calves who have lost their families due to human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and other tragic circumstances. The orphanage works tirelessly to rehabilitate these traumatized youngsters, slowly integrating them into the nurturing environment of the Jabulani Herd. Success stories like Khanyisa, the albino elephant calf rescued from a snare, and Kumbura and Timisa, are testaments to their dedication.

Jabulani is a family-owned and operated, and one of the oldest in the area. The design feels like an old but updated safari lodge with African art and tapestry. There are six spacious suites and a villa with en-suite baths that have dual sinks, bath tub and separate shower. Each of them comes with a private patio with plunge pool overlooking the dense jungle so you can hear the birds and monkeys right from your camp.

All meals and activities are included during the stay. There are morning and afternoon game drives with South African wines and snacks on board. You will definitely see the Big Five, including rhinos, leopards, lions, buffalos, hippos, giraffes, and zebras with the expert safari guides.

The food at Jabulani is one of the best I have had at a safari camp in South Africa. There are delicious tasting menus for dinner, healthy breakfasts with locally sourced ingredients, as well as fresh made snacks for high tea at the main lodge. At the end of the day, cozy up by the fireplace for a glass of wine and canapés before dinner. You can choose to have dinner inside the wine cellar, at a common patio overlooking the stream, inside the lodge or in the comfort of your own room. There’s also a spa and a lovely gift shop.

Because the lodge is quite intimate, you won’t hear many people running around. Also the game drives and activities will have fewer travelers on safari vehicles. The service is stellar with special attention to each guest.

Jabulani is located in the Kapama Private Game Reserve, near Hoedspruit in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, adjacent to Kruger National Park. Access is typically via flights to Hoedspruit (HDS) airport, followed by a short transfer. I recommend going in the dry season as the safaris are more accessible and the temperature cool.

During the dry season (typically August to January), when water levels are low enough, you can swim in a natural rock pool right at the edge of the Falls on the Zambian side. With a natural rock lip preventing you from going over, it’s a truly exhilarating and unique photo opportunity. Access is via Livingstone Island tours.

3. Stay at The Royal Livingstone by Anantara (Zambia)

The Royal Livingstone by Anantara is the closest accommodation to the Victoria Falls. As a guest you will have pristine views right from your room, and be able to walk to the Falls anytime of the day through a private access. Also, at the hotel, you will see free roaming resident giraffes and zebras that don’t seem to be spooked by humans walking around. Some of them moved in during the pandemic and had babies on the property, so this is as much as a home to them, as your stay here for the next few nights. Not just that, you will see impala, baboons, and hippos right outside your door, even though this is not a safari lodge. This may be the only Spa in the world where you can get a massage overlooking the Zambezi River, wildlife, and the spray of Victoria Falls.

There are multiple restaurants at the hotel serving locally-inspired cuisine with unparalleled views of the Zambezi River. Grab a cocktail at the instagram-worthy Travelers Bar, and head in to the Lounge where you can admire the paintings of Sir David Livingstone, hand-drawn maps of his African travels, and an array of artifacts and books that inspire a sense of adventure. Have dinner of African mezzo, kudu stew, and malva pudding at the open-air Kubu Deck with an orange sunset over the Victoria Falls.

Make sure to book a breakfast at the hotel’s Jetty, so you can watch a special sunrise over the Falls. It’s super quiet at this time, except for the grunting of hippos, who are all around you. You can see the mist rising above the Victoria Falls, as you sip on your cappuccino. A dedicated server will bring you your breakfast order right on to your private table at The Jetty.

A quintessential Victoria Falls experience! Glide along the tranquil Zambezi River above the Falls as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues. Keep an eye out for elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and an abundance of birdlife. Many cruises include drinks and snacks, providing a perfect, relaxing end to your day.

6. Soar Above the Falls with a Helicopter Tour (Zimbabwe)

Gain a breathtaking aerial perspective of Victoria Falls, the winding Zambezi River, and the surrounding national parks with a 12-minute long “Flight of Angels” helicopter tour. See the sheer scale of the Falls, the gorge, and the incredible landscape from a vantage point few get to experience. It’s a splurge, but worth every penny for the unforgettable views.

7. Fly in a Micro Plane (Zambia)

An alternate and more thrilling aerial experience is on a two-seater micro flight. The open-air scooter style vehicle looks a bit funky, but is super smooth and safe. You will sit behind the captain, and soar into the skies for about 20 minutes. Below you can see the National Park, Victoria Falls, and the Zambezi River. I was able to spot elephants, rhinos, and crocodiles from above. The best part of this experience is that there are no windows and doors to block your views!

7. Bungee Jump or Zip Line at Victoria Falls Bridge (Zimbabwe)

For the ultimate leap of faith, take the plunge from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, spanning the gorge between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Dropping 111 meters with the thundering Falls as your backdrop is an experience reserved for the truly fearless. Alternately, take a Canopy Tour gliding through the rainforest in a series of zip lines. You will get a variety of different vantage points – from above, below and within the canopy itself. Experience forest bird life, which can include the Knysna and Purple crested Turaco (Lourie) and Peregrine Falcons. There’s also a bar/ restaurant onsite where you can enjoy the views from.

9. Attend a Boma Dinner and a Show (Zambia)

At the Avani Victoria Falls Resort, you can visit a Zambian village recreation that is open to visitors each night. Be greeted by storytellers in village huts, djembe drummers and Ngoni dancers, colorful arts and crafts, and learn about the ways of everyday life. I found great examples of this throughout Uganda, but especially in Bwindi. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of the most visited tourist sites in Uganda as it is a gateway for mountain gorilla trekking. But the community of Buhoma in Bwindi greatly benefits from this wildlife conservation activity.

Find out different ways you can support the local community in Bwindi during your visit.

Gorilla Trekking

There are only three countries in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild. These are Rwanda (crowded and expensive), DRC (unstable to visit right now), and Uganda. In fact, Uganda has more number of gorillas that are habitualized, meaning safe for visitors to come close to. Habitualization is a multi-year process during which park rangers trek mountains and spend time around the gorillas, so they are comfortable seeing humans.

There are also multiple sites in Uganda where you can track gorillas. Bwindi is the largest one, issuing up to 60 permits each day. The permits cost $800 per person, and the fee is split between the government and the community. Aside from that, you also have to tip guides, rangers and porters. I also went for a gorilla trek in Gahinga, which is more intimate.

Gorilla trekking is not just a bucket list item for tourists, it helps support the local community. Because of the gorilla-related businesses, Ugandans have realized the importance of conservation. They are now not encroaching on wildlife habitats, cutting trees, and poaching animals. As a result, the gorilla population has increased significantly in recent years.

So, you should go for a gorilla trek. Pay the hefty park entry fees. Stay at a nice lodge and shop for local gifts. And even if you don’t need porters to help you carry your bags or help trek through the steep, slippery forests, get one, or two. You will thank me later! Most of the porters are farmers and homemakers who volunteer up to three times a month to trek with travelers. They make the hike much easier and you also support the community.

Conservation Through Public Health Center

If you are more interested in learning about the different ways of how gorilla conservation goes hand-in-hand with the community of Bwindi, visit the Conservation Through Public Health center. Located in a picturesque hill top, you will not only have some of the most amazing views of the forest, but get a chance to meet real life gorilla doctors! They work with rangers to collect gorilla poop samples to examine their health conditions.

The organization mobilizes volunteers throughout the rural communities in Uganda to teach locals about wildlife interaction, health, vaccination, safe water, employment and education.

Founder, Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is one of the first female trained veterinarians in Uganda. She has even written a book about her work with mountain gorillas and speaks at global platforms.

Ride 4 A Woman

I went to visit Ride 4 a Woman to shop for gifts and souvenirs to bring back home. But when I started talking to the founder, Evelyn Habasa, I was moved by her story and everything she has done for the community. Evelyn was one of eight girls of a single mother in a remote village in Uganda. But through education, she forced her way out of poverty. After working at another NGO, she returned to Bwindi and started renting out bikes to tourists and organizing bike tours for them. Then she bought a sowing machines and started making quilts. As her desire to help others expanded, she purchased more sowing machines, taught other women how to sow, and today employs 300 women from surrounding villages. These women, who are often struggling with poverty, domestic violence, and HIV, walk up to an hour to come to the Ride 4 A Women shop and earn fair wages, get free meals, and dignity to support themselves and their families. Evelyn also provides micro finance loans for them to purchasing sowing machines for home, cattle, plants and home-based businesses.

Today, the large campus is a boutique hotel, gift shop, activity center, and a volunteer and tourism spot. This is the best place in Bwindi to shop for crafts, baskets, clothing, napkins, yoga mat covers, table runners, and much more. You can also place special orders and they can make you whatever you need during your stay in Bwindi. And if you want to place a larger order for holiday gifts and special occasions, they will even ship the products to your door.

Bwindi Tea

It’s hard to think that a commodity like tea can help improve lives. But tea has proven to be a very useful buffer crop when planted between forest areas with protected wildlife, and local human communities. Animals do not eat tea so feel no need to come out of the forest to “crop raid” which is the source of much human-wildlife conflict in areas around National Parks.

Volcanoes Safaris Bwindi Lodge’s nonprofit VSPT set up a tea processing cooperative at the lodge. They train and employ locals to grow, harvest and process tea at the lodge’s tea gardens. When you visit Bwindi, you can take a tea tour where you can walk through the gardens and learn about how tea is traditionally processed in Uganda. You will also learn the difference between black, green and white teas and get a chance to sample them. Finally, take some Bwindi Tea back home for your friends.

Bwindi Bar

Hospitality is one of the easiest ways to generate income. And the award-winning Bwindi Bar has created just that. You will find this no-frills, local bar on one of Buhoma’s main streets. It is easily accessible from the Bwindi National Park and most lodges, but set within the community. Here you can enjoy a well deserved signature Gorillini cocktail after your trek, as well as Ugandan bites, tea and coffee. You can also watch a Rolex making demonstration. It’s not a watch, but a delicious omelette and roti wrap!

Founded by VSPT, Bwindi Bar provides hospitality training to young disadvantaged youth from the neighboring communities. This is the first practical training ground for those who want to enter the hospitality work industry. After gaining skills on communication, service, confidence, hygiene, etc., they go on to work at luxury lodges and restaurants across the country.

On St. Vincent vetiver helps protect the volcanic soil against soil erosion, and helps with ground water retention, soil regeneration, and insect repelling. It is also non invasive and resistant to fire. Vetiver is now utilized all over the world in tropical and sub tropical areas as low cost ‘green engineering’ to stabilize slope embarkments along roads and drains. The 2021 volcanic eruption on St. Vincent destroyed vegetation, but vetiver grass was unaffected by the ash. This promoted the idea of planting vetiver hedgerows on farmlands.

Vetiver originates from Southern India and I have definitely seen it around growing up. But it was only recently that I learned so much about this grass. I went to visit the brand new Vetiver Heritage Center sponsored by the Sandals Foundation in St. Vincent.

Finding Self Esteem in Grass

From the outside, the Center appeared like a charming Caribbean home, with a small garden and breezy air passing through the doors. Inside, there were several people learning how to train, sow and craft the grass into beautiful handmade rugs and bags. The founder of the nonprofit, Grow in Time and Hand2Earth, Vonnie Roudette greeted me with a big smile and told me about her love for vetiver. As an artist, she was asked to do a workshop in St. Vincent’s prisons, which is where the idea was born.

Roudette showed prisoners how to work with vetiver, and their creativity and attention impressed her. She also found they were learning teamwork as making some of the pieces involved many people working together. The temporary project turned into eight years. Roudette trained them on leadership skills, entrepreneurship and gave them income for their work.

Started in 2015, the Vetiver prisoner rehabilitation program has trained over 160 prisoners in craft skills, sustainable farming, land conservation and eco-entrepreneurship. Today, Grow in Time provides sustainable livelihood to 24 inmates in two correction facilities on St. Vincent.

I spoke to several former inmates who are now employed by the organization. They both claimed that vetiver helped them with self esteem, communication, and learning new skills. They support their families through their products, but also grow their own grass, and teach others about it.

Resort That Gives Back

Because Go Eat Give is all about making a positive impact when you travel, we love Jamaican-owned Sandals Resorts. The Sandals Foundation invests in the local communities wherever their resorts are. They also encourage guests to visit and donate to the projects. In St. Vincent, The Sandals Foundation joined local NGOs Hand2Earth and Grow In Time’s Vetiver Craft Project, making a US $10,000 investment into the Vetiver livelihood prisoner rehabilitation and re-socializing training programs. Until then, the organization did not have a physical location where the craftsmen and women could come to for training.

A Remote Retreat

If you decide to go to St. Vincent, you will be surprised by how the island is still untouched despite the tourism boom in the Caribbean. In fact, Sandals St. Vincent, which opened in 2024, is the first luxury property of that scale on the island. It is also the largest employer. The staff is super excited to be able to work in the tourism industry without having to move to neighboring islands.

Sandals St. Vincent is an all-inclusive, adults-only resort, set in a pristine cove surrounded by volcanic mountains. You can arrive at the property by land or water taxi, and see gorgeous scenery from both sides. The lush tropical surroundings are my favorite part of the resort, but the sunsets on the water and the expansive spa are romantic too. Stay at one of the 10 beautifully designed wood and earth toned two-story overwater bungalows. Make sure to grab one of these in advance, as they sell out quickly! Enjoy the ocean breeze from your private patio with a daybed upstairs, and a king size bedroom with glass doors downstairs, so your view is never interrupted. All meals, drinks and activities are inclusive during the stay.

Play in the Sun

Another reason to visit St. Vincent is the coral reef. Since not many visitors come to the island, you will not find many boats filled with people at the snorkeling and diving sites. Sandals St. Vincent has an onsite PADI dive shop that offers classes, certifications and excursions.

Other things you can do while on the island are hiking, biking, kayaking, visit waterfalls, sunset cruises, spa and relax at the beach. Take a Pirates of the Caribbean tour and see filming locations for the movie, ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl.’

And of course, don’t forget to purchase Grow in Time crafts to take home, so you can tell everyone about the benefits of vetiver grass. Many of their products have already made it into luxury homes and hotels! The store is open on Saturdays and by appointment, so message them before you go.

I travel internationally so frequently, that my 52-page passport filled up before hitting the 10-year expiration mark. I found out that you can no longer add more pages to your existing passport. And I usually don’t have enough time between trips to wait around for a renewal. So I panicked! I searched online and got conflicting and outdated information. So I posted my dilemma on social media and asked for help. Then, I contacted the National Passport Information Center and inquired about my options.

Here’s what I found out…

There are two ways to get a new passport or renew one quickly.

The first option is to make an appointment at your local passport agency and go in person. You can only do this if you have an international trip coming up in less than 14 business days. You will need to prove your travel by showing your flight, accommodations or tour reservations. For me, this option felt playing too close. There were only limited appointments available in Atlanta. What if I miss my appointment, make a mistake on the paperwork, or the office is closed? Actually, many people forget to sign the passport photo!

Responding to and fixing a passport application that has been suspended/put on hold by the government due to errors can add 3-4+ weeks to the current government-quoted processing times and has been a huge factor in countless missed and canceled trips. 

Another way to get your passport renewal expedited is by going through a third party company, such as ItsEasy.com Passport & Visa Services.

Can it be so easy?

I researched for third party services that offer faster passport renewal services and found ItsEasy.com. • It should not be damaged, torn or stained.
• May 7, 2025 onwards, all U.S. travelers must be REAL ID compliant to board domestic flights. The new passport photo page is REAL ID compliant and printed on laminated hard stock.

Get a Passport Card

It’s Easy.com can also help you apply for a second passport. That means, if you are work demands you to get visa processing frequently, you can get 2 U.S. passports. This is quite difficult to get and requires approvals.

However, you can easily get a passport card separately or in addition to your passport, through It’s Easy.com. I got myself one of these as well. The card is for U.S. citizens to travel by land and sea between USA and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and Caribbean countries. It can be used to cross land borders from Mexico and Canada faster.

Experience Fiji Before Landing

When I board my 10-hour long 10pm flight from LAX, I was excited for the upcoming romantic getaway, but also want to get some sleep so I arrive fresh to enjoy my vacation. The cabins on Airbus A350 were spacious, with pink hued backlights. The moment I settled in my business class seat, the flight attendant greeted me with a hot towel and a glass of champagne.

The business class cabin had lie flat suites with 33 business class seats, in a 1-2-1 configuration, spread across nine rows. The gray leather seats were super comfortable, and you can get a mattress topper when you are ready to sleep. The black and white pillows, blankets, and amenity kits, look sophisticated. I was well stocked with socks, pen, toothpaste, eye mask, and premium brand Pure Fiji lotion and hand sanitizer. I also liked having two storage compartments, so my purse and shoes were not on the way of my bed. Of course, you want to watch a movie before, there’s a 17 inch personal screen with lots of entertainment options, and USB port to charge your devices.

Dining on Fiji Airways

Aside from the delicious food, I loved that the tray table was quite large and could be adjusted in height. This is important for me particularly, as I use my laptop to catch up on work emails. You can also get 15 minutes of free messaging on a mobile device and pay extra for web plans.

Another great amenity is the constantly supply of bottled Fiji water available throughout the flight. Fiji water is considered one of the purest in the world and the best way to stay hydrated on long flights.

Passengers are offered a four-course dinner once airborne. I was surprised to see so many vegetarian and vegan options, along with Fijian inspired meals, using locally sourced ingredients. There was stir fry tofu bowl, yellow pumpkin curry, broccoli and cheddar quiche, and red velvet pancakes. “Tasteful to the palate and the eyes!” says the chef on the welcome menu card. And Fiji Airways delivers on that promise.

Certain flights also offer dehydrated garnishes feature locally grown root crops like cassava, dalo (taro), kumala (sweet potato) and vudi (plantain banana); as well as kava and cinnamon ice cream.

Once we crossed the international date line, and were ready to land, we were served a scrumptious breakfast. You can make your selection in advance and hang your breakfast card just the way you do at a hotel room. I opted for a vegetarian omelette, chicken sausage, with fresh tropical fruits, muesli parfait with berries, and a really good cup of coffee with soy milk.

Fiji Airways Lounge

Lounge access is only available to business class passengers. The flagship lounge at the small airport in Nadi has a grassy backdrop at the entrance to make you realize you are leaving the tropics. Inside there are couches and comfortable chairs, though can get crowded as there are not many sitting areas at the airport. You’ll find free wifi and a full bar. The food options are also plenty, to reflect Chinese, Fijian and European flavors.

My experience on flying Fiji Airways was consistent on the return as well. The laidback attitude of the staff, friendly service, good food and modern amenities, made the flight more comfortable. Ferrari’s ‘Chilli’ shared advice on overcoming jet lag while taking a seven-hour flight to Dubai. 

“He praised light exposure as the most effective method to get yourself to fall asleep or stay awake at specific times. He suggests applying this strategy during the flight to help you adjust to the new time zone before you reach your destination.”

“If you’re feeling extremely tired and are on the verge of falling asleep on the plane,  despite it not being nighttime in your end-destination, use available light sources to stay awake. The reading light or the television screen – anything that emits light —this will signal to your body that it’s not time to sleep just yet.”

But when the light fails, bring in the caffeine. 

“If you do still feel yourself dropping off, Carlos suggests getting a coffee or tea. Sometimes, you just need an extra dose of caffeine to keep you awake.”

4. Daniel Ricciardo: Preparation For Jet Lag Begins Before The Plane

McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo recommends preparing as much as possible with the time you have, including starting to adjust to the time zone before you even board the plane.

“Ricciardo stresses the importance of preparing as much as possible with the time you have. You can begin preparations before you even set off, adapting your time zone at home slightly before you get there.”

An example of this would be aligning your meal times closely with those of your destination. Eating and digestion promote wakefulness and influence your circadian rhythm. Scheduling your breakfast, lunch, and dinner to coincide more closely with the mealtimes of your destination can be a great way to help your body clock adjust to the timezone shift before travelling.

“Implementing such strategies will allow you to cut straight to enjoying your holiday, rather than spending the first few days asleep in bed!”

5. Valtteri Bottas: Coffee and Exercise

Finnish racing legend Valtteri Bottas is currently competing for Alfa Romeo but previously spent four years driving for Mercedes. According to his experience, coffee and exercise are the answer.

“Bottas is a devoted coffee enthusiast; some brands have even introduced an F1 blend inspired by his coffee preferences. When he’s not searching for coffee, he’s often found exercising.

Exercising at certain times of the day can alter the circadian rhythms in a way that can help aid jet lag recovery, according to The Journal of Physiology. And, as we all know, the caffeine in coffee helps keep you alert and awake.

6. Tom Clark, Esteban Ocon’s Performance Coach: Light-Blocking Sunglasses

“Esteban Ocon’s performance coach, Tom Clark, is possibly the most dedicated in addressing jet lag. He is pursuing a Doctorate in Jet Lag Research.”

Clark has delivered presentations to the team on the disorder and how to deal with it. 

“One of the strategies Esteban praises is light-blocking sunglasses.”

Blue light signals ‘wake’ time to the body which can interrupt the processes of a restful night’s sleep. A recent systematic review suggested that light-blocking glasses may help people with insomnia by preventing those signals from sending these messages to your body. 

In turn, they can lower stress hormones and improve sleep quality.
