Sure, they bring Internet to your devices, but today's routers do so much more. Take advantage of these advanced capabilities to get the best Wi-Fi coverage.

Only a few years ago, wireless routers were relatively dumb devices that merely beamed the Web into your home or office and not much more. Now, they offer everything from support for multiple wireless frequencies to mobile-management tools. And forget the painful setup: The best routers boast a much higher level of default intelligence, making it simpler than ever to configure and use more advanced features. Many functions that once required significant networking know-how can now be properly set up with the click of a mouse. With that in mind, here are seven features found in most advanced wireless routers that are well worth the time and effort to configure and use.

The Wireless Welcome Mat: Guest Access
Whether you're setting up your home or business network, you can extend the welcome mat to visitors with free Wi-Fi. Most routers on the market today include the ability to easily offer guest access to your wireless network. (In some cases this access is even enabled by default. If you are security-conscious, you may choose to not allow outside entities access to your network, but you'll need to disable this setting.)

If you are allowing guest access, it's a good idea to change the guest password on a regular basis. And if your router supports multiple frequencies, say 2.4GHz and 5GHz speeds, you might also elect to limit guest access to the slower 2.4GHz network, saving the higher-performance access for internal connections only. Some router makers allow an even greater level of control access with the added capability of limiting the number of hours or time of day that guest access is available for use. With the mobile-management apps offered by most manufacturers, you can change passwords, control access to different frequencies, and enable and disable guest access on the fly from most smartphones.

Keep the Kids Safe: Parental Controls
Parental controls aren't simply for stopping kids from visiting unsavory websites. In a small business environment, they can be quite useful for explicitly managing sites that should not be accessed on company time. Router vendors offer varying levels of control, ranging from granular blocking on a per-device level to full-blown content-control systems that manage access to external sites. These capabilities can include an additional layer of security protection for your network with antiphishing and malware-detection capabilities you can configure.

Do Double Duty: Add External Storage
The latest breed of routers can take the pain out of shared data storage, too. Current generation high-end models offer the ability to connect external storage directly to the router, with options for USB 2.0, 3.0, and SATA connections, depending upon the model. This allows a do-it-yourself network-attached storage setup. The data may be accessible via multiple paths in addition to network mapping, for example via a router-based FTP server, which can make folders on the drive available externally via the Web. In most cases, any USB storage device, from thumb drives to spinning hard drives, can be attached and made available as shared-storage devices. If it supports it, the drive could also work with DLNA for use as a media server for DLNA-capable devices on your network.

Do More With Connected Media & Backup Servers
Some vendors have gone a step further than merely supporting network-attached storage. A range of high-end routers offer a DLNA-discoverable service that can be explicitly configured as a media server with detailed control over how and where audio and video services are delivered. This server-side application can also be used to manage file-sharing permissions on externally attached storage. Some manufacturers have gone as far as including backup applications, which allow attached storage devices to become part of an automated client backup process. With the continuing drop in storage prices, a small business, for example, may be able to use a multi-terabyte USB hard drive connected to an advanced router as a centralized backup.

Expanded USB Connectivity Means Shared Printing
Wireless printing is nothing new, but with USB connectivity becoming standard, nearly any printer can be turned into an Internet-connected model by just plugging it in to your router. Some manufacturers provide wireless support for printers that are not AirPrint-enabled, when accessed via a supporting router. In a home or office with heavy iPad/iPhone use, the ability to print from any iDevice can really come in handy.

Control Traffic With Network Prioritization
What if you could easily ensure faster Internet speeds for the applications that were most important to you? Wireless routers have offered Quality of Service (QoS) and Wireless Multimedia Extension (WMM) support for quite a few generations. But, for the most part, the actual effectiveness of these technologies was, at best, a slightly noticeable gain in performance and, at worst, a wasted effort in configuring explicit application and bandwidth settings. Router makers have taken note, however, and realize that getting optimal network speeds for specific programs has become a much more common requirement.

Many models now offer the ability to configure specific applications and user devices for optimized networking performance. An administrator may elect to prioritize the performance of desktop devices, for example, while not optimizing connectivity for smartphones or tablets. For example, as businesses add cloud-based services, those offerings could be added by name to priority lists, giving them precedence over non-line-of-business Internet connections.

Vendors have also taken a closer look at how WMM and QoS interact and have added intelligence that allows the technologies to co-exist in a much cleaner fashion than before. In the past, a conflict between the two configurations could easily degrade wireless networking performance.

Apps for Mobile Management
Smartphones and tablets in the office are here to stay, and router makers have responded to the upswing with tools that allow for greater functionality and mobile management on a range of devices. Some are just general purpose, like Wi-Fi scanners that can be used as part of the troubleshooting process when installing and positioning router equipment. Administrators can also monitor signal strength, channel contention, and attenuation from any manufacturer's router on their mobile devices. Some apps even allow you to go from room to room, identifying each space and noting the signal strength, allowing different router antenna configurations and locations to deliver optimal performance in each spot.

Seriously Considering ConfiguringIf you stick with the default settings, you'll certainly get the same router functionality you've come to rely on. But a few minutes spent configuring these advanced features could pay off in real benefits. These high-end options vary from vendor to vendor, of course, so be sure to consider the applications and hardware your router supports.

5 Things Missing in Windows 10

We really like Windows 10, but there are few things missing.

Some of you reading this may not be old enough to remember, but there was a time when a new Windows release would be An Event. Devotees would camp outside stores for days beforehand. It was a positively iPhone-esque phenomenon.

Fast-forward to 2015: While a new Windows release is still important, it's a far cry from The Happening it was back during the Clinton administration. There's a few reasons for this. One, desktop operating systems (and the PCs they run on) just aren't as important as they once were. Yes,Windows 10 is officially device-ambivalent, but its primary raisons d'être is running desktops and laptops. Also, Windows has seen a (relative, but notable) dip in its desktop market share—Apple's Mac OS X is still a distant second, but it has edged up to a not-insignificant portion of all desktop users. And perhaps most importantly, there's simply no reason to journey to a physical location to get a new OS—there's no party to be had.

But that said, we're really excited about Windows 10 at PCMag (even Dvorak!). It's not only a vast improvement over Windows 8 (which has admittedly set its bar precipitously low), it's just an all-around quality experience.

Microsoft has hinted that Windows 10 will be the final incarnation of Windows. There will be no Windows 11. Windows 10 will just receive regular incremental updates moving forward. And as impressed as we've been with Windows 10 so far, it doesn't quite have everything we wanted. Here are a few (easily fixable) things missing from this initial release that Microsoft should consider fixing in coming updates:

1) The ability to tag and color-highlight files

Ever since OS X Mavericks, Mac users have had the ability to add tags to locally stored files. And Apple users have had the ability to add color-coded categories to files since way back in the pre-large cat days. Windows 7 actually included a file-tagging functionality (which I only recently discovered), but that ability appears to have vanished in Windows 10 for some strange reason. Seems like it would be an easy add, no?

2) Improved Skype integration

While the Microsoft-owned Skype is officially an integral part of the Windows 10 ecosystem, it doesn't yet work seamlessly with all the aspects of Win 10. Most notably, it doesn't seem to communicate with the Action Center (Windows 10's notification panel), while other messaging apps do. WTF? This may very well be the fault of Skype's dev team, rather than on Windows 10. But, come on, couldn't someone have made a call? You're on the same team, people.

3) Some version of "Continuity"

Today, our digital lives span across multiple devices. Acknowledging this digital truism, Apple wisely integrated something called "Continuity" into its OS X/iOS ecosystem (not to be confused with Windows 10's poly-device "Continuum" feature). Continuity is the name that Apple applies to the seamlessness between its mobile and desktop devices. This includes things like the ability to start reading an article or email on your iPhone and then pick it up exactly where you left-off on your MacBook.

While this "hand-off" feature is indeed kind of cool, the Continuity feature that would bereally useful would be the ability to send SMS or take calls directly from your PC when you're nearby (something iPhone users can do on their Mac). It would be particularly wonderful if we could do this without needing a Windows phone, but we'll take what we can get.

4) A male voice on Cortana

Sure, we all love Cortana, but what about Cortez? Apple has allowed users to change Siri's gender (and accent) since iOS 7, but Cortana is just a robot lady voice. But why stop at a simple gender change? Why not allow a celebrity to be the voice of your system when they have a movie to promote? We want some flava in our digital assistants!

5) What, no DVD support?

Native DVD support was one of the surprising features that will be disappearing in Windows 10 (Microsoft says that DVD support will require "separate playback software"). I know that we are living in the post-physical media age and this is easy enough to work around, but come on, why ya wanna make us work to watch our old DVDs, Microsoft?

Your phone is full of free apps. But don't neglect the desktop. These free programs can make your life better.

Windows and MacOS don't get the attention they used to in today's mobile world. But we have not fully abandoned the desktop. The real work (and a lot of the play) of computing requires a full personal computer system. To get the most out of that, you need software.

Software can be expensive if you're not smart about it. Free programs have been a mainstay of the desktop experience for decades, and the offerings only get more powerful and fascinating each year. As PCs compete with smartphones, it gets even better. Software developers can adopt an ad-based model, donation-ware to keep things afloat, or a shareware/freemium model that charges for extra features.

This is our first big look at free desktop software you can download and install (as opposed to just free Web-based apps) since 2012. While a lot has stayed the same, there's an odious new threat: crapware installers. To make ends meet, many creators of otherwise great free software, or the services that offer the programs for download, bundle in things you don't want. Worse, the installation routine you muddle through obfuscates the steps, so you provide the program tacit permission to be installed—even though you probably don't want it, at all. One step that helps prevent the extra crapware onslaught: only download desktop software from the maker of the software directly. It's not foolproof—after all, developers want to eat, too—but it helps. That's why it's one of the criteria for inclusion here is that the program has to be available directly from the maker.

Other criteria:

The software has to typically have a Windows-based download; we mark it if it has a version for other platforms, even mobile or cloud-based.
If it's on a tiered sales model, the free version can't be trial-warethat doesn't work after a time.
It should have little or no advertising to support it. Some freemium software depends on showing ads to exist, however.
Software for productivity is what this list is about; there's plenty of other places to find free games.

They might not have a nifty, tanked-up Batmobile at their disposal, but Catwoman and Robin are the stars of two new stories — "Arkham Episodes," as they're called — in Batman: Arkham Knight.

Catwoman is out for revenge after the Riddler captured her and lured Batman into a city-spanning quest to save her. Meanwhile, Robin's got beef with Two-Face, who's using Gotham City as a home for his money-laundering operation.

One day, Batman's many enemies will realize that the Caped Crusader is most concerned with keeping Gotham safe and they'll move on to more crime-friendly cities. Today is not that day, however.

Both Arkham Episodes are available now, as is a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice-themed add-on that brings the 2016 film's Batsuit and Batmobile into the game. This pack is a freebie for everyone, though you'll have to wait until Dec. 1 to get it if you don't have a Season Pass.

There's a new trailer hyping all of this stuff — plus a few other add-ons that are all part of the Nov. 2015 update.

Avast Free Antivirus is one of the
most popular antimalware products around. The 2016 version overhauls the interface, but it could stand to be more informative.A better interface: This year's version gets a row of icons at the top with intuitive images and labels, which animate when you hover over them, to help you see that you've selected them. Clicking each icon drops down a submenu, so you can browse all of them before making a move. If you get lost, just click the home icon that's always in the upper left to return you to the main menu.

Lots of optional settings: Overall, you have a fine degree of control over how Avast behaves. Clicking the gear icon on the far right takes you to Avast Free Antivirus's settings window, which has categories in the left-hand pane, and options for each category on the right. Clicking Active Protection shows you a submenu that breaks down file protection, email protection, and browser protection into three subcategories. Each of the three has a toggle to disable the whole element, which is handy when you already have other software installed that you prefer for one of those three roles. Click Customize to drill down into another set of categories and options specific to that role.

Free syncing password manager: Tools bundled with antimalware suites range widely in utility and quality, and the free suites rarely include a password manager. However, the one in Avast is pretty respectable. It provides extensions for Firefox and Chrome, which you can use to autofill your login information at websites. You create a master password that protects your list of individual site passwords, and you can also sync your list across devices. This requires you to create an account, but it's free. You can also import passwords stored by your browser. Avast doesn't make it clear if its list is encrypted, and the password manager doesn't have many settings to customize its behavior, but if you don't have a password manager, this is a decent entry point.

To sync with Android and iOS devices, you need a different app named Avast Passwords, available for free at the Google Play store and iTunes App Store. The Android version of Avast's security software doesn't bundle the manager, and there is no iOS version of Avast Mobile Security. You can also subscribe to a premium version of the password manager that lets you transmit your login info from your mobile device to your computer, if they are on the same Wi-Fi network, by tapping a button on your screen. This feature costs a modest $10 a year.

Streamlined system software updater: Avast Free Antivirus can quickly scan your computer for outdated software, and updating is integrated into the app's interface. It creates a list of programs that need to be updated, and you need only click the button next to the program's name to get the latest version. Avast noticed that Java was out-of-date on our device, a problem that can create serious security holes. Because of Avast Free Antivirus's update integration, we didn't have to go to the Java website and hunt down the correct pages and links. This might not be important for advanced users, but it also won't get in their way, because the update scan is optional and doesn't hound you to use it.

Cons

The sales pitch can be tricky to navigate: A free program still costs money to make, and its maker will use a variety of methods to persuade you to become a paying customer. Avast Free Antivirus's main method is to put some tools in its interface that redirect you to purchase pages when you click them, or -- in the case of the VPN service -- entering you into a free 7-day trial that you can stumble into if you click too quickly. In the case of Avast Cleanup -- integrated into the Scan menu as "scan for performance issues" -- the tool goes through the process of checking for things that needs to be fixed, then redirects you to sales pitch when you tell the tool to fix the problems that it's discovered.

It's not necessarily a bad thing if an app integrates sales pitches into its interface. However, Avast Free Antivirus indicates two different price structures if you decide to upgrade to Avast Internet Security. The UI tells you that you will be paying $29.99, with an original MSRP of $69.99. But when you click that button, you'll be sent to a window with three choices, where the default choice is a two-year subscription of $39.99. Or you can get one year of coverage for $19.99. None of the MSRPs on this second window screen are $69.99, so it's not 100% clear if this is the same product, or what has been lost -- if anything -- by going from $29.99 to $19.99. On the bright side, PayPal is an option, if you prefer not to use a credit card.

VPN service overstates its abilities: When you log in to the seven-day VPN trial, Avast Free Antivirus tells you, "Your Internet activity is now completely invisible so nobody can spy on you,"that isn't necessarily true. Your Internet service provider can still detect that you're connecting to a VPN, and someone can monitor the VPN's exit point back onto the public Internet and keep logs of that activity. And a VPN doesn't necessarily protect you when you transmit personally identifiable information while using it, nor does it protect you from malware that may already be on your computer, recording what you type or which websites you access.

Bottom Line

According to AV-Test and AV-Comparatives, Avast's antivirus engine is relatively fast and accurate without bogging your system down, making it one of the best free antivirus apps around. And the password manager has cloud syncing across Windows, iOS, and Android devices, a feature that the other managers would usually make you pay for. But it would be better if the free and premium components were more clearly distinguished.
