Home vs business use

Even though technically my printer is for my home business use, my kids end up using it quite a bit for their school projects. Sometimes it’s not so easy to distinguish the cost as a business operating cost. Then again, it’s not that my kids use it all the time or print in volume. Still if you’re a perfectionist and are really picky about segregating your business cost, you could always get your color printing done by an online company. It’s quite affordable and the quality is really good.

The thrifty bug

If you run a business from home, or from anywhere as long as you’re stumping out your own capital, chances are you will want to reduce your overheads as much as possible. So you’ll find yourself constantly on the lookout for stationery deals, any kind of deal that will save you money and eventually that extends to tv deals for your home. I think it’s all in a frame of mind. When you start becoming more thrifty, it doesn’t just stop at your business purchases, it extends to other areas of your life as well.

Sold out in a day?

Each week before I head out to do my groceries, I write up my grocery list with the help of the store’s online catalog. Of late, I’ve been noticing that most of the promo items on my list are sold out each week! Very frustrating and it’s not the first time either.

I hate to throw the word ‘false advertising’ around loosely but I’m saying if they don’t have sufficient stock to run a promo, then they shouldn’t run it at all. It is inconceivable that everything’s been cleaned out one day after the promo starts! It makes for a lot of unhappy customers.

Cutting cost without cutting corners

As a home business owner, I have to be very careful about minding my business capital, tiny though it may be. I don’t have a lot of money to spend and every little bit is going to cause a dent in my revenue so I have to be very careful before I spend any money.

I usually take some time to do my homework thoroughly, read the reviews (yes, almost as thoroughly as if I were reading prototype 37-c reviews) and compare prices. I try to cut cost whenever I can without cutting corners. And in the long run, that has helped me keep a healthy profit margin.

Do it or outsource it?

And so I’m toying with the idea of changing my blog landscapes with some new themes. It should be a fun summer project in that it’s not only giving the blog a facelift, it’ll be like feeding it some essential vitamins to make it run faster and give it better SEO. I mean, what can be so bad about that?

I like the idea. I just don’t necessarily like the effort I have to put in, fiddling with the code. See, the thing is I have to do the tweaking myself as I’m not fond of paying someone to do it for me. If it’s money I can save, then I will try to save it. But it also means I’ll be bogged down with the actual work myself.

Game to try?

A friend was telling me about Squidoo which, yup, while I’ve heard of it, I’ve never ventured to try. I never found the time to find out what it’s really about but she tells me she really loves it. I have to say I’m not often very adventurous when it comes to trying out new stuff unless it really, really impresses me right from the go get.

It’s just like eczema treatment, let’s say. Unless someone told you it really works, would you just go around trying them all? Most likely not, right? But if it comes recommended, I might just make time to at least check it out and see for myself. Same thing for Squidoo. I have yet to check it out though it’s been around for a long time as far as I recall.

Summer agenda

There are some businesses which thrive in the summer and well, for the rest of us, business does slow down because folks are on vacation and not online as much. So round about this time of year, it’s like business is on apidexin and it’s also a great opportunity for us to take a break from working our fingers to the bone.

This is the best time to revisit business and marketing plans, plan for the next business year, do the necessary housekeeping and just get reorganized. So what are you doing this summer?

Find a productive time of day

Have I ever mentioned that it’s harder to get any work done when the kids are home on their school breaks? Well, it is. The weather is warm and it’s easy to get distracted… not just into going out but also when I pull down the blinds in my home office to beat the heat, I almost inadvertently end up becoming really lazy and sleepy.

Whenever I get distracted or have too much to do, I simply take a step back and try to refocus. I think it really helps to find a time in the day when I feel most productive and then try to do as much as I can within that window of time. For different people, this may be a different time in the day. We just have to figure that out and then try to sit ourselves down for a few hours without distractions and just focus.

Being my own boss

Is it just me or is it really tough to get cranking on a weekend morning? I’ve been trying to get started writing and sending out diet supplement reviews but I keep getting distracted. It’s days like this I feel it’s better to be working for someone else because then I can have weekends off.

Being my own boss, I just have to toil away no matter what day of week or what time of day. As long as there’s outstanding work to be done, I have to get it done. That’s because I’m the only employee I have. So if I don’t get to it, no one else will and that means I won’t get paid either.

Revisiting business processes

For a while now, I’ve been thinking of streamlining my home business, you know, something akin to subjecting it to a dose of noxycut treatment to slim it down. It’s doesn’t have to be done in a hurry, just something that should be kept in the back of the mind as we work on our business daily.

You know how we tend to get in a rut when we’ve been doing something for a long while. We just get complacent and keep repeating what we’ve been doing all along. We stop trying to do things differently.

So it’s good to be looking at ways of improving efficiency and productivity while reducing duplication and wastage. Sometimes it also helps to get someone new into the picture for their perspective on how to things could be run differently.
