Altered a $4 clearance sale men's BDG tee from Urban Outfitters using vintage ribbon trim from the thrift store. The buttons are from an old jacket. I thought the colors and styling were reminiscent of Marc Jacobs, but maybe its just me.

So, this is my cat:

And I have one of those wacky cats that is always up to something wacky. Like all cats I suppose.

Anyway, lately the light in our apartment has been really cool. I think its because there is a really big tree outside the front yard that casts amazing shadows. Everything kind of shimmers and dances around on windy days.

Anyway, its funny when I'm working from home during the day and out of the corner of my eye I start to get the sense that Ruby is up to something. Lately she is talking to herself and concentrating on spots of sun. Rory thinks that she is waiting to be beamed up to meet her mother in a spaceship. Naturally.

Today I took photos for the Companion Animal Trust: Feral Cat Initiative. They seem to have been able to adopt out all five baby black cats they brought to the event so that is a huge success! I'm so proud to have helped with this event. This is a really cool organization.

Jersey City Craft Mafia at Fourth Street Arts Fest

On the weekend of October 3rd, the Jersey City Craft Mafia manned a tent in the rain during the JC Village 4th Street Art & Music Festival in Downtown Jersey City. The day was almost completely rained out, but we stubbornly held our ground, hanging plastic sheeting and banding together to fjord the massive puddles in the parking lot. In spite of the rain, there were two stages of music, lots of vendors, and a lot of festival goers that came by in support once the rain let up. It was really terrible as far as sales go, but I made the best of it, and after the sun went down, I packed everything up and came back with friends to catch more music.

This is my lovely roommate, Allison of notenoughspoons.com, who sat with me through the rain and hung out most of the day at my table. Rory also got up early, helped me haul my stuff to the venue, went and got me breakfast, and hung out for a bit as well.

The lovely green tablecloth on our table was embroidered by Johanna's grandmother.

I only had time to take a picture of one band before my batteries died, and I happened to catch Dancing Tony from Rock-it Docket in the act of video-graphing the scene!

Other items of note from the day:

Thomas from Made with Love Bakery lent us his tent and helped us set it up.
I met the lovely and kind and amazing Marc Frydman in person, finally.
8-bit music maker Natty Adams was amaaaaaazing. Chip tunes for all.
I met one of the boys from Thomas Francis Takes His Chances who just moved to JC and seem to be loving it.

New Dress Form

My sister Janine brought this awesome birthday gift over for me last week. I guess they've been hanging on to it since my birthday. Now I have two dress form mannequins in two sizes, which makes it easier to photograph smaller sized clothing (In my Etsy shop I try to carry bigger sizes, but sometimes I find things that I just can't pass up!)

I think they look nice together.

The dress form on the left is the new one. It came from a music shoppe that was going out of business. Janine and my niece Hannah also picked out some old sheet music for me, and included a bag of Lindt Lindor Truffles, which are my absolute favorite! (Dark chocolate especially.)

Thank you David Ziser, Dane Sanders, and Sarah Petty; from a new photographer with a bright outlook for the future.

In 2006 I had this little studio space set up in my parent's basement.
I've definitely progressed since then...

Last night I attended the David Ziser Digital WakeUp Call Seminar in midtown. I learned a lot about lighting, marketing, video, and the wedding photography industry. It got me very excited at the prospect of shooting more weddings, and for finding someone local to work with and learn the business side of things. Photography is one of those things that I think has always been in my life and I'm just now realizing how important it is to me and all of the creative aspects of my personality. Photography ties in my loves: fashion, music, design, nostalgia... you name it and I can capture it with a lens. I can't explain how nice it feels to discover just how much I love taking photos.

This snowball of a process is all due in part to my purchase of a smugmug account, which gave me a discount download of an audio book by Dane Sanders called FastTrack, which led to me tuning in to the recent Sarah Petty Joy of Marketing Telesummit. I feel like I've finally found a few tools to help me share and explore my talents in a way that expresses them perfectly. I'm so excited to see what other classes I can take and who else I can meet in Jersey City that's shooting events and is looking for some assistance from someone like me! Stay tuned to find out.

As you may or may not know, LITM, a local bar, restaurant, and art gallery in downtown Jersey City, asked me to come and photograph all of their monthly art openings. This is the latest: a team of three tattoo artists and friends displaying pen and ink, airbrushed, and mixed media pieces. Enjoy the photos of work by Tim, Russel and Ruler and get down to LITM to check it out in person. Particularly of note: Russel Kelley's painting of a Saturday Evening Post Rockwell cover was a knockout.

Myrtle Beach Wedding

I had the joy of attending my college roommate's wedding this past weekend. It was a long trip, but it was such a nice and relaxing time. We had gorgeous, if a bit rainy, weather down in South Carolina, and I may have finally erased my tan lines from biking in Ireland over a year ago so I am a happy camper. The wedding was great, the wedding band was AMAZING! My favorite part of the weekend was remember what amazing college friends I have: they are quirky, comical, caring, and totally loyal and fun. I almost forgot what treasures they are! How nice to reconnect with friends who know you well and knew you when. Here's to Monmouth University alums everywhere!

I also just really LOVE shooting weddings. I love capturing personality and movement in candid moments. Enjoy!

She won't be performing in Manhattan on this tour so catch her up here while you can before she comes back playing a less intimate venue.

Human Adult Band (New Jersey/Philadelphia) experimental noise/grunge fronted by Trevor Pennsylvania and backed by a collective of artists and general weirdos.

Mirrors & Wires (New Jersey) psychedelic surf band that kind of make you feel like you'd rather be catching waves.

Exploding August + Solanin (Jersey City) are beautiful ladies performing melodies for your sonic pleasure and if you ask them, will probably also have equally beautiful crafts to buy/swap.

Just a quick little post to tell you not to worry. I'm still alive and kicking, and I've been working very hard behind the scenes to develop a new web site, as well as a photography portal to share my photo work with clients. Its become quite necessary to put a process in place so that I can quickly process my creative work in a consumable way, and I've struggled with how to keep the casual feeling of my go go distro blog.

Here's the lowdown:

You don't have to change any RSS feeds whatsoever, and you'll still be able to read my blog on Blogger, or you can hop on over to emilyaugust.com and subscribe to the new RSS feed there. It will essentially be replicating exactly what I put into Blogger, so if you are comfortable here, please stay. I like that I can keep all of the social linking aspects tied to Google and Blogger while trying out my grownup blog on Wordpress. This whole process has been a learning experience and I would be happy to consult with other bloggers looking for help on this topic!

I must say a big Thank You to Rory Nugent for helping me figure this out!

I'm also restructuring my flickr pages and images to make that more navigable and as a result, I'm breaking image links left and right! If there are any images you can't see in my blog posts, or if you've linked to one of my images in the past and now find it missing, please let me know. Thanks, as always, for reading. Every summer I reread Bonjour Tristesse.

Just like The Outsiders it was written by the author when she was a teenager. Its fantastic! I read it before I knew anything about French Cinema and I fell in love.

Other books I habitually read during summer include:
The Chronicles of Narnia series.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
After college I added:
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
and Ham on Rye by Bukowski.

I was a child of the public library system. I wanted to be a librarian when I was little and I longed to join all of the summer reading clubs that were posted up at school at the end of the year. There is something luxurious about laying outside by the pool with a good book, sleeping on the beach with a book across your eyes, or laying inside when its scandalously hot outside and oh-so-air-conditioned inside the house and you've got a comfortable chair. I liked riding bikes and building forts and all of that, but I was always content to sit with a book for hours on end. I wish we had time for such luxuries now that we're grown.

I will re-read my "classics" this year, but it will just have to be between everything else.
