TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Travis Cobb returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to set the tone for No. 21 Arizona and the Wildcats went on to rout Washington State 48-7 on Saturday.
The Wildcats scored the first seven times they had the ball.
Arizona led 34-0 at the half, then William "Bug" Wright returned a punt 86 yards for a score the first time the Wildcats touched it in the third quarter.
Arizona (6-2, 4-1 Pac-10) stayed in the thick of the Pac-10 race. The Wildcats are the only team in the conference never to play in the Rose Bowl.
Washington State (1-8, 0-6) lost its starting quarterback, freshman Jeff Tuel, when he sprained his right knee in the second quarter.
Marshall Lobbestael replaced Tuel and finished 7 of 11 for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Cougars avoided a shutout when Jared Karstetter made a one-handed grab of Lobbestael's pass on a 64-yard touchdown play with 6:23 to play.
Nick Foles threw for 151 yards and a touchdown in limited playing time for Arizona. Matt Scott, the Wildcats' starting quarterback the first three games of the season, rushed for 83 yards in nine attempts and threw for another 26 yards.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -Kevin Craft passed for 159 yards in the second half after taking over for injured Kevin Prince, and UCLA made a late defensive stand to snap its five-game losing streak with a 24-23 victory over Washington on Saturday.
Rahim Moore intercepted Jake Locker's deflected pass near the UCLA 20 in the final minute for the Bruins (4-5, 1-5 Pac-10), who ended a school record-tying seven-game conference skid despite losing Prince on a helmet-to-helmet hit late in the first half.
Craft, the Bruins' starter last season before losing his job to Prince, led their comeback from a nine-point deficit, going 10 for 14 with a 29-yard TD pass to Terrence Austin. The UCLA defense also shut out Locker and the Huskies (3-6, 2-4) in the final 26 minutes.
Locker passed for 235 yards and connected with Jermaine Kearse for two touchdowns, but the fleet-footed quarterback rushed for just 23 yards while playing with a deep thigh bruise in Washington's fifth loss in six games since beating Southern California. Kearse had seven catches for 114 yards, none in the fourth quarter.
After Kearse's 34-yard TD catch put Washington up 23-14 early in the third, the Bruins came back with Austin's TD catch and went ahead on Kai Forbath's 27-yard field goal just 7 seconds into the fourth quarter.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Sean Canfield threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score Saturday night in Oregon State's 31-14 victory over No. 23 California, which lost star tailback Jahvid Best to a concussion after he took a scary fall.
Cal (6-3, 3-3 Pac-10) couldn't recover from seeing Best land on his back and head in the end zone after a leaping touchdown in the second quarter. The Golden Bears, who had won three straight to get back in the Top 25 for the first time following a four-week absence, lost their fifth straight at home to the Beavers - and this one made Oregon State (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10) bowl eligible.
Canfield completed 29 of 39 passes with nine to Jacquizz Rodgers and six each to James Rodgers and Joe Halahuni. It was the third time in the last four games Cal gave up more than 300 yards in the air. Damola Adeniji had five catches for Oregon State, which leads the Pac-10 in passing.
Lance Mitchell's 18-yard interception return early in the third quarter set up Justin Kahut's 24-yard field goal that made it 24-7. The Beavers have won three in a row against Cal overall and nine of the last 11.
Canfield completed 11 of his first 13 passes, including five straight to start the game. Canfield's first incompletion came in the final minute of the first quarter, but he then immediately connected with Adeniji on a 32-yarder.
Canfield threw a 15-yard TD strike to James Rodgers early in the second quarter for the Beavers, who have won four of their last five games and are in position for a school-record fourth consecutive bowl berth. Jacquizz Rodgers was held to 67 yards rushing on 25 carries but had a late 24-yard TD run.
Cal, meanwhile, struggled to get anything going offensively - and that only became worse after Best's injury. The Bears were held to one first down and 45 yards in the first quarter, 37 of those coming on one pass play.
Best sustained a concussion and was carted off the field and taken to the emergency room. He had movement in all of his extremities, Cal spokesman Herb Benenson said. Benenson also said more tests were being done on Best before a final diagnosis would be announced by the school.

STANFORD, Calif. - "Fifty-one points," Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh said to himself.
Stanford Stadium was still reverberating with the Cardinal's stunning 51-42 victory over No. 7 Oregon on Saturday, and in the tumult, it was all he could think about.
"Fifty-one points." It hadn't sunk in.
On so many fronts, the victory was monumental for Stanford football.
• It vaulted Stanford back into the Rose Bowl race -- still needing help, but back in the race nonetheless.
• It showcased the talent of Toby Gerhart, who set Stanford rushing records for a game (223 yards) and a season (1,217).
• It gave Stanford its sixth victory, making the Cardinal bowl eligible for the first time since 2001.
• And it ignited such a reaction from Stanford fans that they stormed the field at the end of the game.
"Over the hump, baby," Harbaugh said while hugging another well-wisher.
Indeed, after last year's 5-7 season, the Cardinal sought the elusive victory that would symbolize the program's ascent. The fact that it came over highly-ranked program that was at the forefront of national prominence after a resounding 47-20 victory over USC last week, made the significance even greater.
"This was the best opportunity that Stanford football has had in the past 10 years for this team to express who this team is," Harbaugh said. "And they expressed it. I couldn't be more proud."

BERKELEY, Calif. - It tells you something when the postgame quotes after a big road win lean more toward "Ho-hum, we did it again" than "Hip-hip-hooray!" but Oregon State had been here before, explaining a big win at California while the devastated Golden Bears congregated in the other locker room.

To be exact, they had replayed this scene in 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007 and again Saturday, when the Beavers hammered the No. 23 Bears 31-14 for their fifth win in a row at Memorial Stadium.
"There's something about Berkeley," said OSU quarterback Sean Canfield, who completed 29 of 39 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns. "I love the area. I love playing here. It's a great atmosphere."

On a day when Stanford rocked No. 7 Oregon, the Beavers (6-3, 4-2 Pacific-10 Conference) climbed back into the championship race -- they are tied for fourth place, one game out of first -- and became bowl eligible for a fourth consecutive season, a school record.

In what has become their usual late-season push, they have won four of their past five games but that doesn't explain what seems to happen every time they walk into Memorial Stadium.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)--Will Harris returned an interception 55 yards for a score, Matt Barkley threw a 75-yard pass to Damian Williams for another score, and No. 12 USC held on for a shaky 14-9 victory over Arizona State on Saturday night.
Coming off the worst loss in the Pete Carroll era, the Trojans (7-2, 4-2 Pac-10) barely survived on a night they produced little on offense. The victory kept the Trojans in the hunt for an eighth straight Bowl Championship Series berth.
USC's defense was the reason the Trojans beat ASU (4-5, 2-4) for the 10th straight time.
Sun Devils freshman Brock Osweiler came off the bench and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Chris McGaha. But Harris ended ASU's upset bid by picking off Osweiler's last-gasp pass in the end zone as time expired.
Perhaps still reeling from last week's 47-20 wipeout against Oregon, the Trojans seemed to be in a fog early on.

The cast of characters showing a little character had two leading men.

The senior quarterback who conjures up horrific memories of bad passes . . . interceptions . . . defensive backs celebrating in the end zone . . . from a last season UCLA fans would love to forget.

The freshman cornerback who is so skinny teammates would like to send him back to the table for seconds . . . and thirds . . . and maybe slip in a midnight snack or two.

Kevin Craft, poster boy for a 4-8 season in 2008, came off the bench to put UCLA back in the win column. Sheldon Price, an example that three square meals are not always enough, made sure of the 24-23 victory over Washington on Saturday.

It ended UCLA's seven-game Pacific 10 Conference losing streak, which stretched to last season. It also left Coach Rick Neuheisel open for criticism -- but only for his postgame rendition of the UCLA fight song over the public address system at the Rose Bowl.

Oregon State took it another step further.

And then, of course, Oregon humiliated them.

So USC's defensive players came to the desert seeking redemption.

They got a measure of it on Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium, the defense leading 12th-ranked USC to a 14-9 victory over Arizona State before a crowd of 55,582.

Senior safety Will Harris returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown and receiver Damian Williams turned a short pass into a spectacular 75-yard scoring play as the Trojans bounced back from last week's blowout loss at Oregon.

A few hours after Oregon fell at Stanford, the Trojans improved to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

STANFORD, Calif. — Oregon will have to settle for the Rose Bowl race in 2009.
Any glimmer of hope the No. 7 Ducks had for a national-title shot went up in smoke Saturday — or rather, up in a cloud of dust. Stanford and powerful tailback Toby Gerhart bull-rushed Oregon before 43,924 in Stanford Stadium, the Cardinal fending off a late UO rally to win 51-42.
Gerhart ran 38 times for a career-high 223 yards and three touchdowns, complementing the pinpoint passing of redshirt freshman Andrew Luck. Oregon had very little trouble of its own moving the ball Saturday. The only problem was, the Cardinal had absolutely none.
“I’m a big man, I shoulder the blame,” UO defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti said. “For whatever reason, we didn’t get it done.”
The Cardinal brought Oregon crashing down to earth, after the Ducks’ blowout win over USC raised the specter of national-title worthiness. Whether the Ducks overlooked the Cardinal or not, Oregon’s winning streak is over at seven.

ATLANTA, Ga. - Josh Nesbitt's three-yard touchdown run in overtime allowed No. 10-ranked Georgia Tech to escape with a 30-27 win over Wake Forest on Saturday evening at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
With the loss, Wake Forest drops to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the ACC. Georgia Tech improves to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
The Deacons were looking for their first victory over a top 10-ranked opponent since 1946 and nearly pulled off the feat. Wake Forest led 17-10 at halftime and pulled even at 24-24 late in the fourth quarter. The Deacons' final drive of the fourth quarter stalled at the Georgia Tech 40-yard line, sending the game into overtime--Wake Forest's second OT game of the year.
After the Deacons were forced to settle for a field goal on their opening possession of overtime, the Jackets responded with the game-winning touchdown. Tech converted a fourth-and-one at the five to set up the winning score by Nesbitt.
In the team's first meeting since the 2006 ACC Championship game in Jacksonville, Georgia Tech started out fast taking a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. However, the second quarter was all Wake Forest as the Deacons scored 17 unanswered points to take a 17-10 advantage into halftime.

MIAMI (AP) -- A defense that couldn't stop anything a week ago was suddenly airtight. An oft-injured running back had the best game of his career. And a punt returner somehow evaded seven would-be tacklers on his way to a touchdown. For Miami, everything worked.
Graig Cooper rushed for a career-best 152 yards and a touchdown, Thearon Collier cut across the field for a remarkable 60-yard punt return touchdown and Miami (No. 17 BCS, No. 16 AP) eased past struggling Virginia 52-17 Saturday -- finally avenging a loss that hovered over the Hurricanes for two years.
Jacory Harris finished 18 of 31 for 232 yards with two TDs for the Hurricanes (7-2, 4-2). The 35-point margin of victory was Miami's biggest in an ACC game since beating Duke 52-7 in 2005.
Rashawn Jackson had a 34-yard rushing touchdown for Virginia (3-6, 2-3).
The Cavaliers were outgained 515-149 and played without starting quarterback Jameel Sewell, who warmed up but was eventually ruled out with a shoulder injury.
"Miami's got a lot of playmakers in all phases of the game," Groh said. "And we had a lot of difficulty controlling and matching those playmakers."

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and ran for another, and North Carolina State held off Maryland 38-31 on Saturday.
The Terps, playing without starting quarterback Chris Turner for more than half the game, rallied from 10-point deficits twice in the second half, but were unable to get the tying touchdown in the final minute.
NC State was forced to turn the ball over on downs at the Maryland 31 with 0:59 left in the game.
Backup quarterback Jamarr Robinson had scrambles of 11 and 19 yards to move the ball into NC State territory, but defensive end Michael Lemon sacked the sophomore and forced an incompletion on the final play of the game.
Wilson was 25-for-38 for 343 yards and the Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4) made just enough plays to secure the win. Both teams combined for 752 total yards.

RALEIGH -- N.C. State's players got back to the locker room just in time to watch the tape-delayed broadcast of the game-clinching defensive series on television.

After the month the Wolfpack had, it was a moment worth watching again.

Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and ran for another, and N.C. State snapped its four-game losing streak by holding off Maryland 38-31 on Saturday in a matchup of the ACC Atlantic Division's worst teams.

In a wild game that featured a combined 752 total yards and five turnovers, Wilson was 25 for 38 for 343 yards and the Wolfpack (4-5, 1-4) -- who went 0-for-October -- came up with just enough plays to secure their second win against a Bowl Subdivision opponent.

"They go in the locker room, it's like they don't know how to win anymore, it's been so long," coach Tom O'Brien said.

Wilson overcame a career-worst three interceptions with touchdown tosses of 17 yards to George Bryan, 35 yards to Donald Bowens and 18 yard to Darrell Davis. Wilson and Jamelle Eugene each had 2-yard scoring runs.
