Mayfield releases letter; hopes to be a Chicago:
To all my fans, friends and fellow competitors:
First and foremost, Shana and I want to thank all of you who have supported us. To say that the last two months have been two of the worst months of my entire life is an understatement. The only event I can think of that brought me even greater pain was the loss of my father in 2007.
Last Wednesday's ruling by Judge Mullen was a giant step towards clearing my name and getting the 41 car back on the track. Our hope was to bring our team to Daytona this weekend to qualify and race in the Coke Zero 400. For those who know me well, there is nothing in the world that I would rather do than race for you all on the 4th of July. Following Judge Mullen's ruling, we had less than twenty-four hours to prepare the car, assemble a team, get sponsorship and travel to Daytona. Ultimately, we were unable to get this done in time. We've received several phone calls from friends and fans as well as friends in the media wondering if we would be coming to Daytona this weekend, anyway. We've decided that our time is best spent back here in North Carolina working around the clock to try and secure the funding needed to get the 41 car to Chicago and beyond. Shana and I as well as everyone at Mayfield Motorsports will do everything in our power to race next weekend.
Finally, we've been watching on television and reading online about the "Storm Clouds Over Daytona" and the "Mayfield Media Circus." Honestly, this is the last thing Shana or I want for anybody. This weekend shouldn't be about a questionable drug test or a flawed drug testing system. It should be about celebrating our country, the greatest country in the world. So, enjoy the weekend with your friends and family, and have a very happy Independence Day. We look forward to seeing you all at the track very soon.
Thanks again for keeping us in your hearts and prayers.
Jeremy and Shana Mayfield

There's been a lot of talk about a potential third SHR/HMS team. Kasey Kahne's been mentioned. Kesolowski's name as popped up. I read anunsubstantiated rumor in another forum that A.J. Allmendinger might have caught Smokes attention?

Here's another one, a kid who I think is vastly under appreciated: Reagen Smith.

(1) ROY last year
(2) Sitting around 38th in point despite having run only slightly more than half the races
(3) Is averaging between a 22nd and 23rd-place finish for each race despite driving for a part time team.
(4) Currently has a string of 51 DNF and has yet to suffer a DNF in Cup competition
(5) Seems intelligent and is well spoken. He'd make a good spokesman for some sponsor

Looks like a kid who drives with his head as well as his gut and knows how to bring the equipment home in one piece. I believe Smoke could do far worse.

The eighth inning, which has produced so many heartaches for the D-backs this year, was for once their friend.

The D-backs scored six times in the eighth to beat the Rockies, 11-7, on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd at Coors Field.
The win snapped Arizona's three-game losing streak and came on the heels of a tumultuous 24-hour period that saw the team's third baseman, Mark Reynolds, call out his teammates for lack of effort and the manager bench two players as an example.

John Daly (Daly Planet Blog) wrote a pretty good article on last night's race coverage. He brings up a lot of good points and finishes the piece with:
This TNT production really showed what NASCAR TV could be if the three networks involved got together and pooled resources and ideas. This single telecast put the Hollywood Hotel, Digger and Fox's endless "Junior hype" in a new perspective. In a short time, ESPN will take over the Cup coverage with no online video, full-screen commercials and one pre-race driver question as the only connection with the fans.

Saturday night in Daytona was memorable for many reasons. One of them may be for a type of NASCAR TV broadcast that we will not see again until next July. That would be a shame.

The entire thing is a really good read that puts some things about TV coverage into perspective. It can be found at:
The Daly Planet: TNT Sets The New NASCAR TV Standard

One thing I didn't see John mention, which added to my enjoyment of last night's coverage, was the fact that Larry McIlliterate was kept in the background and apparently didn't have an open mike available to him throughout the race.

I have only two minor complaints about the way TNT handled the coverage last night:

When they cut to Stewart in the first Burger King commercial it was kind of too real. I thought for a second they had patched into Tony's comm's when he was actually reporting trouble. The PIP effect enhanced this possibility.

What brought out the yellow flag on lap 166? The fact that they had just finished commenting the Edwards felt a caution would come out soon and the inter-car comm's between Hamlin and Shrub and their vibrations... It just seemed kind of "coincidental" without an explanation.

Other than that it was about the best coverage I've seen since the major networks took over. It just proved to me that cable channel coverage is still the best.

What had been a blown six-run lead for the Tigers eventually became a victory -- it just took a while.

Actually, it took quite a while, long enough for Placido Polanco to have two go-ahead singles, for the Tigers to empty the bullpen and for the calendar to turn to the Fourth of July by the time Polanco's RBI single spurred a three-run 16th inning. It was a tough 11-9 win for the Tigers to pull out over the the Twins, and it probably shouldn't have gotten to that point. But they also know it could have been worse: They could have lost a game that they twice led by six runs, 6-0 in the third and 7-1 in the fourth, and that's a good part of what kept them going from Friday night into Saturday morning.

Manny Ramirez homered in his first at-bat Saturday during just his second game back from a 50-game suspension for violating MLB's Drug Policy.

The solo shot gave the Dodgers an early 1-0 lead.
In his second at-bat, Ramirez grounded out to short on a close play at first. Ramirez briefly argued the call before retiring to the dugout. Ramirez then hit another sharp grounder to shortstop Everth Cabrera in the sixth, but Cabrera tossed to second to force out Russell Martin and end the inning.
Ramirez turned on a 1-2 changeup from Padres starter Josh Geer with two outs in the first inning. It was his seventh home run of the year, and the 534th of his career -- tying Ramirez with Jimmie Foxx for 16th on the all-time list.
Ramirez left the game in the bottom half of the sixth, and Juan Pierre took his place. In Ramirez's first game back Friday night, he went 0-for-3 with a walk and left after his sixth-inning at-bat
