Horror Blogger Die!

This is my no budget homage to those awesome and terrible VHS horror films you would find at any mom and pop video store. It was by Wormwood Cinema, and I have plans for some more crazier films in that vein.

Gory martians don't wear plaid

2012-09-14T23:28:00.000-07:00

In the eighties, Carl Reiner cleverly spliced Steve Martin into public domain footage of poverty row quickies to make the comedy, Dead men don't wear plaid. I've been thinking about that and the old VHS slasher quickies like Hellroller, Mummy in the basement, etc. Essentially, it was the explosion of the 60's cinema done in VHS format. Were there terrible movies? Sure, but finding the diamond in the rough was a part of the charm, and a reason why VHS and shot on video horror films still retain a charm despite the ketchup blood and the stripper moonlighting as an actress kind of thing.

My favorite director from that time period is Tim Ritter, and the film that definitely got me into that genre of film was 1995 Creep...when I moved to Lexington Ky...the only spot that dealt with offbeat films had it...it had a surreal cover and of course I rented it many times...it was a weird horror movie in a cartoony universe with Joel D. Wynkoopoop as the eerie Angus. I, was of course, hooked and into this film and more.

Fast foward several years later, and by luck and fate I got to know Tim and got a small part in Truth or Dare IV. It was a great experience for me, and loved the screening of the film at the histroic Kentucky theater. I won't bore folks with some of the headaches I've had making indie films...let's just say, if I ever wanted to pursue that career in personality disorders therapy..a lot of the actors and crazy gearheads I've met over the years would give me a heads up. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great folks on both sides of the camera...the unstable folks are just the pepper in that soup sometimes. Getting back to the screening, it was a fun blast of crazy gory fun...and something I'm thinking about in my next project. Nothing is set in stone with indie films...even after the shoots and edits, but I have a good idea where I want to go..

It will involve aliens, burlesque images, creeps, and doctors from alternative universes...I have some test pix I recently did and will share it with everyone...mostly the thing is to make a fun film on all sides...thought I'd share the work in progress with folks.

Saucer Sextant (prequel to 'Saucer Sex Peep Show' available only here!)

Saucer Sextant: the prequel for 'Saucer Sex Peep Show'

the magical 'church of the octopus' holds the key to another world

This film came about when a distributor start up was hitting me up for any films I had available (at this point I was wrapping up Saucer Sex Peep Show). I made the prequel quickly using mainly myself, puppets, and public domain burlesque footage for the film. The point was to make a film and if the distributor was on the up and up, then go ahead and offer them 'saucer sex peep show'.

I was both the hero 'Bruce Strange' and the comic foil, the slightly horny and daffy 'Hugo', and both characters were working on a strange device from the 'church of the octopus'...a fairy tale, that Bruce Strange is convinced is a real gateway to another world.

Bruce Strange

Hugo the scientist

There are connections to Saucer Sex Peep Show, Bruce Strange was talking to General Krueger on the phone (a cameo with the actor playing Krueger didn't work at that point), and the newscaster was named after the main actor in saucer sex peep show, Steven Guynn). The church of the Octopus was also a connecting thread to both films, and the idea of a nightmare world was just waiting to infest this world was an idea in both films. Saucer Sextant was a lot of fun to make, and so I'll share it with the world...

Newscaster Steve Guynn

What happened to the film?

Long story short, the distributor which had been asked for a film turned out to be a lemon, and after the smoke cleared I walked away with both films still safe(there are legit distributors for indie films out there, but some are fly by night operations who play it loose with the math and are looking for naive filmmakers to swindle films off for their profit only...but that's another story...)

check out the prequel for saucer sex from beyond. It's called 'Saucer Sextant'...available for free and only on this blog...more surreal hijinks and is NSFW (nudity, skulls, and weirdness)

If you are interested...here is the trailer for 'Saucer Sex Peep Show' (available on amazon instant video).

It was a lot of fun...perhaps there is a sequel?

J.R.R. Williams presents The Hobbin Stone

2012-03-04T19:33:00.000-08:00

Working on a tolkienseque inspired film which is a parody and homage to the early eighties sword and sorcery films like Conan and Ator, the fighting Eagle. Once a part of Ectovision, the Hobbin Stone is now a stand alone film(s), and inspired by my love of role playing games and getting pumped up with the excellent gamer film, Gamers II: Dorkness rising (worth a look, produced by the dead gentlemen)...The Hobbin stone aka the stone of saint Seth is a magic item stolen from the etheral elves by the wicked bloodline of Morganna. Enter the wizard Guyfax (Steven Guynn) and Kevin the hero knight (Cherokee Hall) to protect castle Chadwell and the bloodline of the Bruce.

As a nod to middle earth...I will add an extra R to my initials, and it will be 'J.R.R. Williams presents the Hobbin Stone'...fun medieval surreal craziness! Still working on it, but more details soon...

Guyfax and Kevin the Knight

Witch queen Morganna (Heather Price) craves the Hobbin stone

King Bruce, heir of the Bruce line

Guyfax under the spell of the dreaded Selinix (Roni Jonah)

the film actually deals with a previous age, where a younger guyfax fights the dreaded Venomix Morganna, who had stolen the Hobbin stone from the eternal elves.

Misty Simmons-Poteet as Venomix Morganna from the first age of the stone

Guyfax and the Foe Hammer fight Venomix Morganna!

wizard Gaydar and warrior Banyon prepare for battle!
