• Videos | Youtube     Videos are the biggest part of the internet right now and will be for a long long time. People like to watch video and they always will, until something better comes out. It took a long time for video to get to the internet just for the simple fact that internet access couldn’t support it at dialup speeds. A good example I can share is my buddy, Jonny.  Jonny started a cosmetic business in 2008. His website was made with wordpress and provided products for purchase and tutorials for anyone who wanted to learn how to apply make up like a pro. He made a couple short videos, edited them, threw some music into the background and posted it to youtube. Viola! Six months later, he has had 30,000 views and thousands of visitors to his website because of one 3 minute video. The best part? This “advertising” is free. It doesn’t cost anything to put a video on youtube.  Youtube isn’t the only video site either. You should post every one of your videos to different sites to maximize viewing pleasure! If you keep making new videos, you will eventually develop a group of subscribers who will follow every video and post you make. And, as we all know, word of mouth advertising is the best advertising you can get. You can make a site for free, market it for free and provide your customers exceptional products that they love to buy. I remember reading in a book called the little red sales book, customers hate to be sold, but love to buy. This is so true. And the internet is a shopping tool. People know they can get deals online. Help them buy what they want. Show them all the fun things they can buy with your videos. Keep this is mind when you talk about your product in your video and customers will buy from you.

Now, on the other hand, there are going to be people out there who will continue to pay for ‘pay per click’ ads. And why not let them pay you to put their ad on your site, right?   • Email has always been a pain in the butt. Unless you’re just sending one or two emails from your computer, you need to setup a professional email system. There are some free systems you can use, but they’re complicated and don’t work as well as the paid services. Plain and simple. If you’re going to spend money, spend it on this. Communication is the most important part of running a business. If your customers aren’t getting your advertising emails, you’re not going to make any money. Get a pro email system setup asap. Prices vary from free (trials) to 15 bucks a month to 100s per month if you’re sending to over 100,000 people.

Flickr

• Flickr is a wonderful tool to use to keep your photos organized. It’s web based, which means you can upload pictures from any computer and put them instantly onto your website. You can crop, edit, write on, resize and much more to your pictures.

Watermarks

• The best way to keep your photos from getting ripped off is to place a water mark on them. You may or may not be able to do this using Flickr, but if not, you can use google picasa. It’s also a free program. It’s super easy to use. You can make all sorts of collages with it as well.

Your website is not going to look professional unless you use professional stock photography. Chances are, you’re not a professional photographer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use your photos on your website.

Wordpress is so simple. It’s amazing and free. You can install it on your server with just a few clicks and you’ll be able to update your website from anywhere you have internet access. I use wordpress for all my new websites and by doing so, I’ve been able to update websites from my cell phone or from a computer in an electronics store. I remember a time, when I was in Fashion Valley, that a friend called and needed some updates made to his site. I wasn’t going to be near a computer for a couple of hours, so I had the idea to use a mac at the apple store. Within a few minutes, I was able to make the changes. In addition to successfully updating the site, I also had a new client with me, who was so impressed by the capabilities of the website that we agreed upon a website deal that moment.

In addition, I’ve worked on my client’s websites from my friend’s computers in New York while I was on vacation. New technology truly sets you free. Not to mention, it’s got a great support group on the internet, meaning, if you run into a problem, chances are, someone else already has found a solution. You just have to look.

  • wp-contact  The most important part of your website is your contact information. Without it, your customers can’t get in touch with you to learn more about your products or services. You should have an entire page dedicated to contacting you. The simple addition of a contact plugin, which takes minutes to install and customize, will virtually write your contact page for you. It sets up a form so anyone can input a message and their contact information, to send it right to you. Your email stays secure and away from fishers on the web. Fishers are robots that steal your email address and put it on a spamming list.

Recently, I’ve been installing the FAlbum plugin, which uses the flickr service. It’s great. We’re running a complete image gallery utilizing a professional front end, while utilizing the easy to use, feature rich, backend provided by Flickr. I pay for the $25 per year upgrade, but most new websites will not need to upgrade. You can upload in bulk, tag, edit your photos using Flickr’s website. So no more editing the pictures on your computer before you upload them to your website.
