type='text'>Finiding Hope for our Guilt, a Look at 1 John 1:9, Phrase by Phrase.

What can you do when you have a load of guilt and feel that the wrongs you have done are so bad that nothing will fix them? What can you do? Is there hope? Yes, something can be done. In fact, the hard part has already been done.

The Bible says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9.

IF
The word "if" reminds us that there is a condition, that forgiveness and purity is not a universal automatic assumption. God as a right to ask us to admit that we are wrong.

WHAT IS SIN?
The Bible teaches that all wrongdoing is sin and that "if you know what is right to do and fail to do it, then for you it is a sin." (James 4:17) The Bible also teaches that God cannot ignore sin, but since He is holy, He must judge sin and condemn it. Ultimately, all sin is against God, and it is right for Him to be angry with us for the wrongs we have done against him.

HE IS FAITHFUL
He is faithful to His promise of the Gospel. He is faithful to His love for us, and so He offers forgiveness.

JUST
God is just as loving. He does not merely pass over our wrongs or wink at them. He satisfies the requirements of moral justice. For humanity, justice means eternal death, but God offers a substitute in our place. Logically, only a person without sin can pay for another's sin. And a substitute for the wrongdoings of all mankind would have to be infinite (or God) to pay for the sins of all mankind. Jesus fulfilled these requirements.

FORGIVE
God does not forgive the way we do. We may forgive but hold onto some little part; we may have trouble forgetting. But God puts our sins "as far away as the east is from the west," (Psalm 103:12). His forgiveness is perfect, and nothing is left out.

We can not forgive this way, but God can. He can forgive because His anger has been vented in judgment and endured by his son, Christ, on the cross.

PURIFY
Purify here is both an action and a result. God acted by sending Christ to take judgment on our behalf. God took the action, and we received the result, forgiveness.

If you feel that you need to be purified from your sins, then remember it is about the IF. If you confess and receive God's forgiveness through the justice of Christ's death on your behalf as a substitute for your sins, then you can be assured by the promise of God that he accounts for you as righteous.

If you want to know more about how to receive eternal life, see the tab above about the gospel.

To learn about my books of poems, visit my website, A.E. They use tools and formulas to measure the success or progress of their projects and work. Such metrics and algorithms are important but do they measure the one most essential qualifier of success?

Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. Psalm 127:1

ONE SCRIPTURE WITH MULTIPLE MEANINGS

This scripture is poetry and metaphor and has more than one interpretation. People interpret this scripture to refer to the building of the temple and the Lord's watchfulness over Jerusalem. Other people thank this scripture refers to the building of His kingdom or of building up the church, and of watching over the morals of society.

These are beautiful things to think about and talk about. Still, the problem for many of us is that it becomes academic and ethereal. Isn't it better to approach scripture by asking oneself how this verse applies to my life and my understanding of God and the universe, and how do I make it work for me?

Psalm 127:1

At the heart of this verse is the expression of faith and dependence on God. Matthew 4:19

In many of Christ's teachings are statements that his followers would be blessed and be a blessing to the world. Why do so many people try to follow him but fail to live the same joyful and purposeful life of blessing?

Maybe we need to read a little between the lines of what he said.

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." Matthew 4:19

COME

Jesus used the word "come" a lot. If you take a few minutes and look it up you will see he was always inviting people. Many people, however, get the wrong idea of what his invitation is about. He did not invite them to an organization, institution, religion, philosophy, movement, or any of the things we think of when we associate Jesus with the popular definitions. He said come but come to what?

Matthew 4:19

FOLLOW ME

He invites us to himself. He calls us to know and experience him. But to know and experience him is empty without the following of him. We must know his teaching and his way, but more than that, we must be those who do what he taught. We must enact or practice the daily habit of putting him in our lives by obedience to him and knowing him.

AND I WILL

The results or blessings of following him do not come from something we do but from something he does. We do not make our lives a blessing- he does. We don't make our own purpose; he does. Our religion does not fulfill us- he does. Our church does not give us meaning; he does. It is crazy, but it is all about him.

SEND YOU OUT TO FISH FOR PEOPLE

This is a promise, but it is open-ended and not directly defined. It tells first, of God's activity in our lives, but this promise is not for a blessing but for labor. Fishing for others is not a self-focused activity: it is intensely other-centered.

Fish for people is not specific. It may be a work among the poor or the marginalized people it may be reaching out to the sickly or refugees. It may be working among prisoners. It may be meals for the elderly. It may be the many traditional expressions of faith and service, such as preaching and teaching his Word.

As there are many types of fish in the sea, so there are many answers to what fishing for people means. It is not even our determination because he said, "I will make you," so Jesus is the one who enables us to fish for men, and he is the one who defines for each of us what manner of fishing we do.

If we try to build or create our own blessing by following rules or some self-energized activity, we are going to be disappointed. If we give it all up and just focus on coming to Jesus every day and hour and focus on following him every day and every hour, then we will experience him in our lives. He will make us become a blessing to others. There is no guarantee that you will be blessed or fulfilled but you will have something greater; you will experience the works of Jesus in and through you.

Blessings.

A.E. Where Jesus turned over the tables of the money changers and used a whip of cords to drive the animals from the temple.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE?

The worshipper traveled for days to the temple and offer sacrifices. But when he arrives he is told that the lamb he brought to offer is inadequate and he must buy a sheep from the temple merchants at an inflated price. He may have to sell the lamb he brought at less than its fair value. He may be told that the money he was bringing was not good enough for the temple and he had to exchange it for temple coin and to do so cost a percentage. This experience at the very least would distract him, it would very likely take the joy out of his worship, and maybe destroy the worship he was going to offer.

DEN OF ROBBERS

Who were the robbers? Most people assume that Christ is talking about how the moneychangers were taking advantage of the worshippers that came to offer sacrifices and worship. Some people might argue that the robbers were the authorities who were allowing it to happen and they were profiting by it. Other people may say the leaders were the robbers by taking advantage of the people who came to serve God and worship and enriching themselves through religion. Those are valid interpretations but what if there is another?

Who was being robbed? What if the question about who is being robbed is answered by connecting the two statements together? For a moment let's connect the robbery statement to the statement of prayer like Jesus did. This would mean that the robbery Jesus was talking about wasn't the swindling of the worshippers by the money changers but the robbery of prayer to the Almighty!

CAN GOD BE ROBBED?

It would be foolish to rob a cop, and more foolish to rob a prosecuting attorney and it would be even more foolish to rob the only judge in your town, but there is no greater foolishness than to rob God who is the judge of heaven and earth.

So, can God be robbed? YES! Malachi 3;8-9 says, Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.

If God can be robbed because we fail to give Him the offerings and tithes, it is only a step away to rob Him by neglecting prayer.

Malachi 3:8-9

ARE WE THE ROBBERS?

When we fail to pray for others we may be keeping the Blessings of God from them. Perhaps we are robbing the nations when the church is no longer a place where they are prayed for.

For all the hours we spend in church services, we only spend a few minutes in prayer and those minutes are often defined and consumed by prayer requests and little actual praying.

If there is one clear example from the teaching and actions of Jesus in this matter it is that the church is to be a community of prayer for the nations-our own and all others. (Of course not to neglect the other clear commands of scripture to love one another, assemble together, the lord's supper etc.)

MY HOUSE WILL BE...

As we consider what the church is and does we should remember that it was Jesus who connected the idea of prayer for the nations and the statement about robbers. Sadly it is a statement of judgment and condemnation. His actions of cleansing the temple are actions of holy zeal for the temple and the purity of worship. We should take note of it or else we may see him do the same to the church

today.

If you want to rethink what church is start with reassessing the foundational place of prayer in church. Do not be surprised if from the foundation of prayer the other things that the church should be occurfes spontaneously.

(c)Adron Dozat

What Should be a Christian's Political Point of View?

Is there a Biblical political point of view?

As a Christin, should I be a Republican, a Democrat, a Capitalists, a Socialist, or is there another that is closer to the Biblical point of view?

We Christians should live our lives in the sight of a loving God, yet one who is righteous and holy. When we try to put Him in our decisions, then we are often forced to ask ourselves difficult questions. But God's Word gives some direction, though not always clear answers.

I know very little about what a Capitalist is, or a Socialist is, or any of those other political-economic ideals. But I know Jesus taught a lot about how to live life. And one of the things that stands out to me lately is the parable of the talents. Matthew 25:14-30.

Here is a link to where you can read it. I recommend that you do.

In the parable, the ruler leaves on a journey and entrusts three servants with three different sums of money, and upon his return, he requires accounting for the management of those sums. The ones who respected him handled the sums well had doubled the amount. The third did not take responsibility and hid his in the ground and gave back the money to the ruler. The king rewarded the ones who were wise and punished the one that did nothing.

The story is about fearing God and being good stewards, and it ends with the ruler judging all three and either rewarding or punishing the servants. (I believe God is love- but you must remember He is holy and just).

The sums can represent anything, your material blessings, your wealth, your talents, your freedoms, your citizenship, and your vote.

I tried to read the Wikipedia article on capitalism, and it was long and complicated. So my limited understanding is that a capitalist says, "I earned it, it is mine, and I answer to no one for it." Of course, that is an oversimplified summary; but if it represents the foundation of the capitalist view, then I cannot be a capitalist because what I have is a gift from God and not the fruit of my own will. I must answer to God for it. That means tI should use the blessings He gives as He would have me use them, not as I would use them. In short, I am to use these blessings that He has entrusted me with to obey God and to activity love my neighbor.

I went to Wikipedia to try and learn about socialism. It is confusing, Socialism seems to be many things and different groups have different interpretations of what socialism means. My basic understanding of the socialist view is, that no man lives unto himself, we are all one, so what is mine is yours and what is yours is mine. A Socialist should collectivity use his gifts for all. Again, this is oversimplified. But if it is a correct summary of the socialist's view then I cannot be a socialist because I personally must answer to God for how I use His gifts. I cannot surrender my responsibility to the collective. I admit I do not understand how Socialist and progressives get things done but it seems they must arrive at some common ground, but that ground may not agree with my understanding of God's command to love my neighbor. So I cannot be a socialist. I am mindful of the third servant in Jesus' parable I do not want to be judged like him. I must remember that I will answer to God for how I used the gift He gives me.

I can make a long list of why I cannot be a member of this party or that, and no one would read it except to argue.

The story of the ruler who entrusted his servants with different sums makes me think about fearing God and being a good steward. The parable ends with the ruler judging all three and either rewarding or punishing the servants. (I believe God is love- but remember He is holy and just).

When God gives these blessings, He still requires an accounting because we are stewards. If I may coin a phrase, we are DIVINE STEWARDS, because He who is divine has made us stewards.

I am responsible for the gifts God has given me. As a steward, I must become more educated and informed and use those gifts to further His cause of loving my brother. I cannot accept blindly what any party says because I am answerable to God- not to a group or a party. This responsibility of stewardship is not for the lazy of mind or weak of will. It means I have to work to know the truth about charities, institutions, people, and causes. I may, with a good conscience, support institutions, and non-profits that are either conservative or progressive. I can never say that there is a program that is supported by the conservative community (or progressive), and I am a conservative (or progressive), so I will automatically give my support to it without researching it. In every case, as a steward, I must learn the answer to the question, "Is this the best use of God's blessings, and will it show His love to my brother?"

If anybody asks me if I am a Conservative or a Progressive, I say that I am neither. I have chosen the third view, and so I am a Divine Steward.

(c)Adron Dozat

Why We Must continue to Trust God Psalm 37:3

People say to trust the Lord but do those words still have meaning?

"Trust in the LORD and do what is good; dwell in the land and live securely." Psalm 37:3.

TRUST

We often hear that we should trust in the Lord, but maybe the frequent reminders have become a disservice to us because we have stopped thinking hard about it. We are self-reliant or reliant upon government or social structures like insurance or economics, so the trust in God that other generations practiced are foreign even humorous to us today.

We must renew our vision of God and of the practice of trusting in Him.

Trust in God Psalm 37:3

Your faith is only as good as the thing or person you have faith in. If you are driving a truck across an old bridge that is held up with rotting timbers you can have a lot of faith but the timbers are still rotting and the heavy truck will collapse the bridge because the bridge was not worth your faith. You can walk across a new iron and concrete bridge and be full of doubts and even though your faith in that bridge is weak if you have enough to go across it will be sufficient because the bridge is strong. You can trust the Lord, He is God, the creator, and sustainer of the universe, He has all power, all knowledge, and all wisdom. Trust in him is never misplaced.

DO WHAT IS GOOD

Faith and trust in God are not a nice feeling it is something that must be expressed in actions. The faith in the bridge is meaningless until you step onto the bridge. We express our faith in God by obedience to Him. Many agree that mankind, in general, should do what is good, and we all have many reasons, but God is honored when our good acts are expressions of faith in Him.

DWELL IN THE LAND

There is a promise associated with trusting God. This verse was written in a time when empires conquered and enslaved kingdoms then deported the best people to serve the empire. It was a common fear that a person would be separated by slavery and taken from family, country, and culture. The threat was real so this promise was great hope.

LIVE SECURELY
To live securely would be without fear of bandits, conquest, famine or oppression from your own king. Like ancient times we live in an uncertain world, but there is one thing we can be certain of and that is God, He never changes and He is forever good. When we trust in Him we make Him our security.
Matthew 12:49-50

Wouldn't it have been wonderful to walk with Jesus as he traveled over the Judean countryside, just to be intimate and close to the Lord and really know him? Too bad those days are gone, but according to the words of Christ it is possible to us today.

"And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:49-50

CONTEXT
Jesus said this after being told his mother and brothers were waiting to see him but they were unable to approach because of the crowds.

You would have thought the response would be for Christ to jump up and go to his family since scripture teaches we are to care for our family. But it was more important that he use the moment for teaching to his greater family, about a greater extended family of greater intimacy.

AND STRETCHING OUT HIS HAND
A strange and small detail but this gesture is recorded for a reason. It shows many things.

He was personable. That gesture is one any of us might make.

It was a powerful communication to those he gestured to; imagine how they must have felt to see the Lord pointing to them as he declared they were his family.

It is a detail that an observant journalist would report; this detail proves the account believable.

The gesture makes his meaning unmistakable.

TOWARD HIS DISCIPLES
At first one would think Jesus meant the twelve but he gestured to all. His statement was inclusive and not just the twelve. If it included the crowded house of that day it must also include the crowded world of today.

HERE ARE MY MOTHER AND MY BROTHERS
Did you ever want to be one of Christ's disciples, what about being his brother or sister? In this statement, our Lord says, "Yes you are my brother my sister...."

FOR WHOEVER
The whoever in this verse is you and me. Not just some super saint, or priest, or seminary graduate but any guy on the street can by obedience to the Father become accounted as a brother or sister.

DOES THE WILL
We use the word, does, as an action word it is a word of work, doing and moving. Doing the will of the father is not about sitting in church on Sunday but more. We have to know His will and that means knowing His Word then we have to be obedient to its teaching.

INVITATION
To declare the possibility of kinship with Jesus by obeying the father is an invitation, it is saying the door to intimacy with Jesus is open. But do we do God's will? The Bible offers many verses about God's will. Here are just a few for you to start with.

1 Thessalonians 5:18, Give thanks.

1 Thessalonians 4:3, Be sanctified.

1 Peter 2:15, Do good.

2 Peter 3:9, For none to perish.

Micah 6:8, Walk Humbly.

Is there something that is dangerous about the teaching of Jesus? He himself warns that there is in John 12:35.

"Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going." John 12:35, NIV

JUST A LITTLE WHILE LONGER
This is a temporary world, and our lives here are temporary. Although the one who believes in Christ is eternally secure, which means that salvation cannot be lost, the opportunity to be the light in this world is only for a short time.

WALK WHILE YOU HAVE THE LIGHT
Jesus used the word walk to describe the totality of life. Walking is one of the most common activities of a healthy human being. It is a metaphor for the travel through our lives to the destination we all face at the end.

THE LIGHT
You may hear a powerful and convicting sermon, or go on a wonderful mountain-top retreat or participate in an eye-opening mission service but if the lessons you learned from God in those times are not lived out every day thereafter they will wither away inside you and instead of being a blessing become a weight holding you back in every area of your life.

The phrase, while you have the light, suggests these blessed truths will not always be there or that we are in danger of losing it at any time. In the context of John 12:35, the disciples must have thought that Jesus was referring to his death when His light would be taken then, but we must all take warning to live the truths we have been given.

WHOEVER WALKS IN THE DARK
Many people fail to be true to the light of Jesus' teaching. They have little understanding, mix it all up, and hurt people in the name of God. They wander in the dark and cause others to stumble after them.

Neglecting the teaching we have received is dangerous. If we fail to live out the light we have been given, that light will become darkness inside us. We must all be diligent about staying in the light of Christ's teaching and practically living that light.

Psalm 103:11

Is there a limit to God's love?

A child may ask how much do you love me and it is cute but the question is a serious one when we become adults, especially regarding God.

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;" Psalm 103:11.

HIGH

We are earthbound and any reference to height, no matter if it is the top of a ladder, a building, a mountain or the heavens makes us aware of our smallness.

High as a term of measurement is unique because most other measures have limits of some sort or they change at some point such as measuring light, sound, or heat, but if Earth is a starting point and you go up you keep on going up without changing the nature of going up.

HEAVENS

It is interesting that the word Heaven is used and not sky or universe. The idea of sky or universe suggests limits but the heavens are outside our limits and this extends the concept of something that is far beyond measure.

This makes the measurement to be measureless. The expanding universe has no bounds so the direction of up or high does not have a stopping point, so we understand that there are no boundaries to God's love it is infinite

SO GREAT
With the words, "so great," the verse moves to compare the infinite measure of "ultimate up" to God's love.

These two words suggest the equality of the next subject. The psalmist could have used some other comparative term like, just as, or is the same way, or just so measureless but to say "so great" not only gives the sense of equality but a value of importance, and awesome wonder.

HIS LOVE
God is a God of love, but since it is His love it is unlike anything we know, we really have nothing to compare it to and any attempts to find a similar experience of love in human experience will fall laughably short.

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR HIM
This verse speaks lastly about our relationship with God.

To fear God is not contradictory to loving God but it is the realization of His holiness that we start to understand when we come to know Him. If you know Him you begin to respect and reverence Him.

The proof of God's love is not in words but in actions. The Apostle Paul points out that "God demonstrates his love for us in this in that while we were sinners Christ died for us." Romans 5:8. God's love for us is more than a positive feeling toward us. It is a love that acts- God loved us and died to pay for our sins. Our sin is the only barrier to God's love and He took care of that at Calvary on the cross.

The world is divided into those who know and fear God and those who do not know God. Galatians 6:14

If there was one thing that you wanted people to know about you, what would it be? You can tell by what you boast about.

"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." Galatians 6:14

We tend to boast, intentionally or unintentionally, about the things we think are important. They are the things that we feel others must know about us. These things make us feel important. When we boast about something, it is usually to communicate that this is a thing that we are particularly identified with and that we feel is important for others to know,

MAY

Galatians 6:14 begins with the wordmay. Its use can be wishful thinking or a resolution. It can mean letting something happen, as if to create the circumstances that allow it to occur, or intentionally removing the obstacles from the path of this happening. In this context, it appears that the Apostle is speaking resolutely.

NEVER
Here, the word conveys the sense that he is resolved and committed to a course of action. This is the idea of not giving any opportunity to boast in the wrong thing.

BOAST

We generally look down on boasting as being a shallow and self-absorbed activity. If the Apostle is boasting about himself, that would be a correct conclusion; however, there is a sense of boasting that is not vain when it gives objective and correct information.

CROSS
We, in our modern times, have romanticized the cross, but in the days of the Roman Empire, it was a shameful and torturous death for the worst offenders. In Paul's day, no one would have worn a cross as a piece of jewelry- it was considered ugly.

CRUCIFIED

The past tense of this is that something has happened. The apostle declares that he is dead to the world, and the world is dead to him. Something that is dead has no ability to respond or react to its environment or to stimulation.

THE WORLD HAS BEEN
Another past tense statement, where the Apostle is saying, "It is over," he sees the world, the kingdoms of man, as dead to him.

Since he is dead to the world, there is nothing in the world that has or stimulates the apostle: nothing draws his affections or attention.

His boasting is not about anything he has done but about an event that occurred by the hand of God. His message is that God has worked a marvel in his life, changing him and his values; it was accomplished through the death of Christ on the cross on his behalf.
Psalm 102:27

What does it mean that God lives forever, and how is it important to me that He does?

"But you remain the same, and your years will never end." Psalm 102:27.

YOU
Who is this one we call God? He is the All-mighty, the Creator, the Lord Of All, He is the All-powerful-one, He is the one who saw us from the beginning of time and loved us. He is God whom we can call on with confidence.

REMAIN
Something that remains is the thing that is left when all other things are taken away. If you took away all that was unimportant and all that was temporary, you would be left with God.

THE SAME
God does not change. He must remain the same, or else the hope of mankind for eternal redemption is lost. If God could change then Satin, His enemy would be able to win, and evil would triumph. If God changed, then what is righteous and good today might be wicked tomorrow. His love for us today may be vindictive tomorrow.

If God was to change, there would be a supposition that He may intentionally or inadvertently change His mind about his love for us. If God was to change, perhaps His love for us, if it remains through such a change, might be different and not gracious. But God does not change, so His love for us will endure eternally.

YEARS WILL NEVER END
Notice the scripture quoted above does not say days but years, the longest measure of the celestial planet we live on. As the creator of time, God is outside of time, and He is not bound by it. He is eternal, so there is no gradual slow change, no maturing or decaying.

IT IS A COMFORT
It is a great comfort that God does not change because we can count on Him to be the same loving God who sent His one and only Son to pay for our sins with his own death and blood. To think that God does not change from year to year or day to day reassures us that his love and grace toward us are the same. Therefore we can always trust in God.

It is a comfort that God lives forever because if He did not, then how could He give eternal life if He himself does not have it? Any type of salvation doctrine must begin with an all-powerful and eternal God.

EVERYTHING ELSE ENDS
This world will pass away, but God will not, and when we respond to His love and come to Him through the Gospel of His Christ, then we are in Him who will live forever. Therefore we can be assured of our own eternal life.

Who can you turn to?

So many people let us down, family friends, bosses and our leaders. Who can you turn to? Who can you trust?

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him." Jeremiah 17:7.

BLESSED

We do not use the word blessed much these days, but it can be thought of as "Happy" or to be in a place of contentment. It can mean that you have God's favor.

IS THE ONE

This is the ultimate singular. The one is not someone who is looking at God and faith as an extension of a family, culture, a formal religion that is inherited, or someone who is observing traditions for social reasons. This one is an individual who himself has personally chosen to trust; he would say it is a "Me and God thing." It is personal in the sense of ownership but it is not secretive or hidden.

WHO TRUST

Trust is unwavering faith. Believing in someone and looking to them with hopeful expectation. It is based on knowing the person and knowing that they are trustworthy.

IN THE LORD

Your faith is only as good as the thing you trust in. If you trust in a statue then your faith is only as good as that statue. If you trust in a person then your faith is only as good as that person. To trust in the Lord is the most secure trust you can have. He is ever able to save and provide.

The title of Lord reminds us of how God is the one who rules over all things. He is the ultimate authority and no one is higher in rank than he is As Lord of all he can command the stars and the seas the wind and flowers. If you were to trust anyone there is no one better.

He is worthy of our trust, not only is the Lord the All-Powerful-One, he is one who never breaks His word and always keeps His promises found in the Bible. He is the Creator Father who loves you and sent his Son to be our salvation by sacrificial death.

WHOSE CONFIDENCE

Confidence here is like trust in action, it is to trust with experience, trust that has been tested, and is based on knowledge. If you do not know anything about someone it is almost impossible to trust them.

IS IN HIM

There is no one more worthy to put your trust in than The Lord. Express to him that you are trusting in him and that you are confident of his help. And whenever doubts occur reaffirm your trust in The Lord.
Proverbs 24:3

We would all like to be wise but what would happen to us if we really were?

"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established." Proverbs 24:3.

WISDOM

Wisdom combines experience, knowledge, and good judgment; but more than that it is a gift from God and the result of diligently seeking it.

HOUSE

This reference can have multiple meanings. At first glance, you would think of a structure where a person lives as in a shelter and a place in a permanent community. Metaphorically it can refer to one's life, family and social standing. In both interpretations, several truths come to mind.

A house is built on a foundation, basic support that secures and gives stability to the structure. It can refer to a life that extends beyond oneself, a life that touches others and has an effect for generations to come. A house can be a place of identity and being.

BUILT

The effect of wisdom is intentional since it is actively building in a positive and desirable way. We are all building a life and a legacy but not always with the counsel or guidance of wisdom.

UNDERSTANDING

Understanding does not just come it is the result of hard mental work. You need to think things through. You need to get informed and educated. Understanding takes time and effort.

ESTABLISHED
When something is established it is firmly set in place, it is ready and has an accepted place. It endures through difficulties and time. When our lives are established by wisdom and understanding they will be lives that others will respect and admire.

SOURCE

Wisdom and understanding are not something you can buy at a store or acquire in a classroom. These are unique things. The Bible teaches that the source of wisdom and understanding is God and He gives it to those who ask of him, James 1:5.

Seek wisdom from God and allow that wisdom to be your foundation then it will empower your works and your legacy will endure.

If you do not know God, who is the source of wisdom, and want to learn more about how to have a personal relationship with him then follow THIS LINK.

It is surprising who gives us discouragement. We think our friends would support us in difficult times, but they can attack our decisions and turn on us or just silently withhold their support.

"Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him." But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain." Psalm 3:2-4.

MANY
We may have so many problems and so many enemies that we feel surrounded and trapped in an iron corner. They cast doubts and say things like you can't trust in God, or there is no hope for your situation. They seem to be everywhere, and their gossip spreads through social media until whole communities seem to be against us. We start to avoid people who were our friends and cease to reach out to anyone at all.

No matter how big the problem we are facing, the betrayal of our friends is far worse because of the despair they bring.

BUT
Sometimes a word like but is is a turning point or the beginning of a rebuttal statement. Here it is the beginning of hope. The author of this verse turns his attention from those full of discouragement to his hope in God.

Here he starts to speak personally and directly with the Most High. You can sense the attitude of confidence and expectation.

LORD
The Lord is the one who rules, commands, and controls. He is in charge and has ultimate authority. When you know who God is personally and in an intimate way, you find hope far beyond any other hope.

"Lord" is not only a title- it explains a relationship. A lord is one you are subject to and obey. Many call God Lord, but though He is the ruler of the universe, they themselves have not obeyed him. They make it only a name, not a declaration.

The psalmist speaks as if he knew the Lord personally and was actively subject to Him.

SHIELD AROUND ME
A shield is only good for warfare, and you use it in battle. A shield offers protection from attack and danger; it is comforting to crouch behind it as it stops sword thrust and arrows, but a shield offers only minimal protection. If a shield is big, it is also heavier, and its weight reduces your mobility, so you cannot turn to face a threat. A shield can only protect one side at a time.

The Lord is the ultimate protection. He is like a shield protecting us on all sides; His protection has no gaps in it.

MY GLORY
The Lord gives us more than success since it is He who is our victory. We cannot boast or revel in the conquest of our problems; instead, we look and see it was by God that we endure and will still be standing when the conflict is over.

LIFTER OF MY HEAD
He does what we cannot. He is the one who lifts us out of the dark pit, not ourselves.

I CALL
Here is the desperate cry of a soldier about to fall in battle. Imagine a battle that has turned against you as if your comrades on every side fell, leaving you alone and surrounded as you stand against the host of enemies. You raise your voice to cry for help, and immediately the general sends the entire army to your position to rescue you as they overrun the adversary.

God is always waiting for the humble prayer; it is as if He is waiting while holding the answer in His hand.

HE ANSWERS
It looks like we get out of the problem; but to say He answers does not always mean that He delivers. His answer may be the strength to endure through a difficult time. We can be assured that whatever answer the Almighty gives is more than answer enough.

The world we live in can be very adversarial, but the God we serve is the Lord who triumphs, and we can have confidence that if we come to Him in humble prayer, we will see the victory.

Are you tired of serving God?

Sometimes, you just get tired of serving God because it is so draining on your time and energy, and after all that work, it seems like no one appreciates it. So what do you do?

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS...
In the writings of St. Paul, serving God was not exclusive to the clergy or the faithful of a certain rank; he saw serving God as a privilege and a mandate for every believer.

STAND FIRM...
At first glance, this phrase does not convey a lot of activity. More than once in the Old Testament, God says, "Be still and know I am the Lord," Psalm 46:10. Exodus 14:13. 2 Chronicles 20:17.
To stand firm means to not give way to an enemy in battle or leave a position. A soldier on the battle line does not need to advance as much as he needs to hold his one place in line, so he must stand firm. If he fails to stand firm in his position, the entire line may collapse, and the battle will be lost. When we fail the Lord, those we love are hurt too.

LET NOTHING MOVE YOU...
"Let" is a word that indicates we have a choice. Choose and resolve to allow nothing to move you. We must be watchful for the many little things that can move us by an inch from our place. If the enemy can get us to move enough inches, then we will have moved a yard. We must be vigilant and diligent to be watchful of all temptations, big and small.

ALWAYS...
There is no exception. There is not a day off and no vacation from persevering in service to God. Every situation is an opportunity to demonstrate faithfulness.

GIVE YOURSELVES FULLY...
Again, we are challenged to choose to be all out for the Lord. We don't give ourselves halfway or 90%, or mostly; we must be fully given to the Lord. This is a reasonable response because he gave himself fully for us in his death for our sins.

YOU KNOW...
We can be assured there is no doubt.

LABOR IN THE LORD
A condition. Not all church work is in the lord. Two people can be doing the same work simultaneously and place, but one may be in the lord, and the other is not. The difference is the heart attitude; if we are serving selfishly or seeing it as drudgery, it is not in the Lord. But if we are serving with an attitude of Love, devotion, joy, and obedience, we are doing that task in the Lord.

NOT IN VAIN...
We may not see the fruit of our labors but are like the patriarchs who sought a city not made with hands, which is to say we obey God's calling in faith. We do not know the outcome and may not even see the fruit of it in our lives here on earth, but we have this promise in this verse that our labor, our energies, and our lives will not have been wasted.

Resolve that no matter how tough it is to stand for the lord where you are, he is the one who makes it worth it.

We hear about Christian values in the media and our faith community. Does the Bible list a set of Christian values? Are some more important than others?

The Bible gives several lists of values. Here is one.

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." Colossians 3:12-14.

THEREFORE...
The context of this passage is that Paul encourages those who are made alive in Christ to set their hearts on things above. As he expounds on the idea that in Christ, we focus on heavenly things, he makes it practical for how we live here on earth.

CLOTHE YOURSELVES...
Clothing is a word picture for covering yourself. In this context, it is to say let all your acts be wrapped up in these things.

This is a beautiful teaching illustration. You must willfully put on clothing. He did not say, "Let your servant clothe you" or "Let clothing happen." To say, "clothe yourselves" requires a purposeful act. we must become intentional in practicing the following virtues.

COMPASSION...
An act of grace when it is in your power to exercise justice or punishment. It is an act of sympathetic understanding.

KINDNESS...
An act of good mercy when it is in your power to withhold it.

HUMILITY...
Take the servant role and esteem others as better than you are.

GENTLENESS...
An act that considers another's weakness and approaches them with care.

PATIENCE...
Enduring over and over the weakness of others.

BEAR WITH EACH OTHER...
Holding others up in times of difficulty or to carry them in their weakness.

FORGIVE AS THE LORD FORGAVE YOU...
The highest standard of forgiveness one could have. The Lord forgave sinners who rebelled against him, even those who died for their redemption. If that is our example, we must never hold a grudge or seek revenge.

OVERALL...
We are to put on these virtues, but over them like an outer garment, we put on love. These wonderful virtues are wrapped up with the one that is above all and holds all other values together. It is the supreme governing rule of conduct and is the one thing that is our default behavior. If in doubt, this is the one to do.

PUT ON LOVE...
As we put on the other virtues, we are especially admonished to put on love; we must intentionally choose to do it.

PERFECT UNITY...
Love is the most powerful and binding of virtues and brings balance where one value may become overemphasized, and others neglected. When love is the binding value, we must practice all the values sincerely and without hidden motivation.
Luke 18:1

Prayer is essential, but we don't act like it.

We know we should pray and that prayer is supposed to be a good thing, even essential, but a lot of times we just don't feel like it. What do we do then?

"Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." Luke 18:1.

In the parable that follows this verse, Jesus tells the story of a woman who repeatedly goes to a judge to seek justice, but he continues to refuse her. Eventually, he gives in because she has worn him out. Jesus makes the point that God responds to our request more willingly than the judge who does not, and therefore, we should always pray and not give up.

The type of prayer that the woman portrayed was the prayer of need. We may feel that our needs are insignificant or not worthy of God's attention, but the opposite is true. Every need and situation, no matter how small, is deserving of the attention of Him who sent his only begotten son to die for our sins.

ALWAYS

Always can refer to time. It means we should be ready and willing to engage in prayer at any time of day, whether it is morning, noon, or night. It means we should be willing to pray on any and every day of the week, regardless of the season of life.

Always can refer to any place. You should pray in your church as part of your community of worship, but you should pray at home, at work, in the place of leisure, or in the marketplace.

Always can refer to circumstances. When you face problems, trials, and tests, pray. When you have times of refreshment, peace, and relaxation, you should pray. Whether it's good times or bad, you should pray in those times.

Always refers to the practice of a daily discipline of prayer, where we have a habit of praying at specific times.

Always refers to a prayer that is spontaneous and offered on the spur of the moment.

We should pray in the morning and at night, both at work and at rest. We should not allow other things to crowd out the importance of prayer.

NOT GIVE UP

There are many hindrances to prayer, and there are numerous obstacles that hinder prayer in our lives.
Such as...
     * We are attacked by doubts, guilt, or a sense of unworthiness.
     * We may not see the answers we expect or desire.
     * We may have doubts that God is interested in our prayers.
     * Our sins may have made us feel distant from God.

But knowing that God is good and trusting in His goodness should encourage us to pray.

If you don't feel like praying, you should pray even more. If you are discouraged in prayer, you should resolve not to give up.

NOT JUST ADVICE

This passage has many parallels in the Bible where we are admonished to pray, and there are more where we are commanded to pray.

If we don't feel like praying, we shouldn't give up; we should still pray.

If you feel that you are distant from God, maybe you need to come to Him and receive his gift of

How often you read the Bible may show your true opinion of it.

We know we should read the Bible every day, and most people of the Christian Faith try to read through it once a year. We think it is a good thing to do, and without a doubt, it is, but is there a time when it is a bad idea to read the Bible?

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." James 1:22.

The context of James 1:22 is in a passage where the Apostle James tells the followers of Christ to live holy lives. He says that we must not listen to God's word and then not do it because we will become self-deceived. He concludes with an example of a simpleton who looks at a mirror and forgets what he saw.

DOERS

Of course, not everyone who reads the Bible is a doer of the Bible.
A doer of the Bible is
     * A person who is obedient to its teaching.
     * A person who observes the commands.
     * A person who intends to do what it says.
     * A person who applies it to his life.

WORD

The unique name for the scriptures illustrates its purpose. It is "The Word," an expression and communication of The Creator to the ones he created. The Word of God is a gift and a responsibility. Our Heavenly Father has a message for each of us and it is in the pages of the Word He gave us.

HEARERS ONLY

A healthy person with average hearing can hear something effortlessly under normal circumstances. The idea is not just the audible reception of the scripture; it could be a matter of studying or reading the Word of God. It might even be advanced study such as attending a seminar, camp, or classes at a renowned seminary.

ONLY
Only is defined as a lesser, a part of a task, it is something that is left undone, neglected, or overlooked. If you have only read or heard the scripture you have done the lesser part, there is more. The greater part is obedience to The Lord's instructions and commands.

DECEIVING YOURSELVES

A deception is essentially a lie. We deceive ourselves without knowing it. We do it when we tell ourselves that we are going to do one thing but really have no intention to do so. We do it when we refuse to see the truth about ourselves.

To deceive yourself is the worst deception. It goes on and reproduces itself in millions of thoughts and actions.

Jesus claimed to be the "Way the Truth and the Life," John 14:6, and if we are his followers we should be characterized by truth in our actions and thoughts.

MISSED BLESSING

James 1 continues to say that anyone who hears God's Word and does it he will be blessed. You are not blessed by just hearing or reading the scripture- your blessing comes from doing what it says.

THE LIVING WORD

Read God's Word and read it every day. It is living and active, Hebrews 4:12, it will slowly change you if you do so, but read it with an attitude of willing obedience because to read it and not obey it is self-deception.
Malachi 3:6

If everything changes, does God change too?

We have trouble with the idea that God does not change because we see and experience change on every level in our world and lives. If He changes, can we be confident in the goodness of The Almighty tomorrow as we are today?

"I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed." Malachi 3:6.

THE LORD
Here is a simple reminder of who He is. He is not only the one who created the universe out of nothing, but he is also the one who, by that same power, has the authority to rule and even condemn. As the Author-of-all, He is also the owner of all.

DO NOT CHANGE
Things change for different reasons. They change because they grow, age, learn or are subject to external forces greater than they are. But none of these things apply to the Almighty. He does not grow since God is already complete. He does not age since He is eternal. He does not need to learn because He is All-knowing. He is not subject to external forces greater than He is since God is the Almighty, and as the Creator of all things, nothing is greater than Him. Nothing that causes change applies to God.

God has declared that He does not change, so we have a promise based on The holy character that He will not change. If it is a matter of choice, the decision is made, and God has decided not to change.

Our understanding of God may change, but the way He was yesterday is the way He is today and the way He will be tomorrow.

DESCENDANTS OF JACOB
The verse and passage were addressed to a people and a time, but it may easily apply to all people and all-time since the point is not the audience but the author. It is about God.

The faithful today can identify themselves with the promises to Jacob.

ARE NOT DESTROYED
It is not because we are so noble and virtuous that we are not destroyed but because of the faithfulness of God. He is faithful to Himself, so He does not change. He is faithful to His promise.

God is Good, loving, and gracious. He always has been, and He always will be. Because He never changes and is holy, we can trust His promises in the Bible, where He offers eternal life, blessing, and goodness to those who receive him.

Isaiah 12:5

Few of us think much about worship.

Worship may be one of the most important things we do, yet we do not realize how much is implied in the simple act, or how many truths we are expressing. Could it be that worship is the very point of it all?

"Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world." Isaiah 12:5.

SING

Singing is often thought of as a form of entertainment and an art form, but here it is an act of celebration. When you sing to someone you honor them and are showing that you value them. When you sing the national anthem of your country you are celebrating, honoring, and declaring your relationship to your country.

HAS DONE

God has done many wonderful and blessed things in each of our lives. He has given us life and a measure of health and a measure of prosperity. Without focusing on the past we want to remember that we are in debt to the past mercies and glories of God. We should reflect on the great things he has done for us each as individuals and as a community.

GLORIOUS THINGS

His greatest blessing is that he sent his only unique son to be the sacrifice for our sin and pay our debt before his holy justice.

LET THIS BE KNOWN

The verse suggests that worship is a proactive act of proclaiming. We should not be silent, it is just wrong. God has done so much good for each of us we have a moral obligation to communicate to one another. For example, if we were publishing an article we would credit sources or if we were producing a movie we would list the names of all those who supported the project. How much more should we give God the credit that is His for what He has done in our lives?

ALL THE WORLD

This verse starts with a singular voice as if it was speaking to an individual, (the command to sing), and we experience scripture speaking to us individually because it is living, but the verse moves to a sense of the plurality in declaring to the world the deeds of the Lord.

First, we are singing to the Lord, then we are giving testimony to those around us. His greatness, grace, and mercy are worthy of telling to the nations. He is worthy of global praise.

Many faiths are obedient to the command to spread the Good News to the nations. Of course, we want to spread His kingdom and see souls rescued from the bondage and judgment of sin. Part of spreading the kingdom is spreading the worship.

Let us all follow that model of giving God private personal worship personally and then faithfully declaring to others his glorious deeds.

Sometimes we are so worn out by loss and grief that we do not have the strength to go on. Where can we turn to for strength to carry on?

"My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." Psalm 119:28.

MY SOUL
We are creatures of body, spirit, and soul. The soul is often referred to in a poetic way to describe the deepest, truest part of a person. It is the part that is thought to be eternal and essential. The writer of this verse is speaking of his deepest feelings.

WEARY
Weary is more than being tired after a day of work. It is the bone-deep exhaustion that comes after the constant use of your energy and strength. It is the result of the sustained struggle.

SORROW
Sorrow is not just sadness but grief. We may be sad, but this sadness is far more.

STRENGTHEN
The prayer of this verse begins with the need of the petitioner. The request is not to escape but to be strong and endure. It is not to avoid sorrow but to thrive through it. He asks God to prop him up and give him the ability to stay the course.

ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD
The Bible is full of promises from God to His children that offer hope, blessing and encouragement in times of struggle and sorrow. The verse does not reference any single promise in particular but the totality of scripture.

The psalmist speaks as if he is confident. There is no doubt in his mind that if he calls God to honor his word, there will be grace and blessing.

YOUR WORD
It is the word of:
     * The One who never breaks His word,
     * The One who is holy.
     * The One who is all-powerful.
     * The One who is all-powerful.
     * The One who never lies.

OUR PRAYER
We can take this verse as an example. We can ask for the enduring strength of the Almighty, loving Father with confidence that He is willing and able to give strength.

We must learn His Word, the Bible, and study it to know the many promises it has for each of us. Take time to read the Bible and look for the comfort it can bring as God speaks to you through it.

Prayer John 16:24

Is personal happiness something we could get through prayer?

Jesus said, "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." John 16:24.

"ASK"
To ask someone for something is to take a position of being inferior to the person you are making the request of, at least at that moment. The very act of asking is humble.

This verse has no reference to earning- just asking. Asking implies relationship; you need to know the one you are asking.

You do not come with an offer to earn or buy, but you must simply ask.

"AND YOU WILL RECEIVE"
This is a promise, but Jesus did not say exactly what you will receive. You may receive what you asked for, but the answer may be no, or wait while God works in your heart to change your desires.

HAPPINESS VERSES JOY
The word happy refers to good happening, so happiness is circumstance driven since it is our positive response to the events around us. We are made to respond to our circumstances, if things go well you are likely to be happy.

Joy has no regard for circumstances; you can experience adverse events and still have joy. Joy is from within; it comes by the spirit and is a fruit of God's Spirit living in us. Joy may find expression through prayer. God makes a promise that in prayer we will experience joy.

"IN MY NAME"
We represent Jesus in our prayers to the Father. We are bringing his kingdom interest before God. On one hand, this is very open and on the other, this is very restraining. Open because it suggests anything may be asked for since he represents the authority of God's power, and restraining since it is saying your request represents his desires. Meaning we would pray for the things he wants, and we would not pray for things that are opposed to his holiness. For example, we would not pray for revenge since Jesus taught love and forgiveness, or we would not pray for idle wealth when Jesus taught to sell all you have and give to the poor and follow him.

As in all things Christian, this is tied to our relationship with Jesus. We cannot pray in his name if we do not know his interest or his desires. We cannot pray in his name if we do not know him and his teaching.

PRAY ON
We all make mistakes in prayer but we must press on and pray. It is worth the effort to know God better through prayer and to experience the spiritual joy He gives.

Note: There are other conditions of prayer in scripture, such as prayer must be according to God's will and not for self-gratification, but this verse is one of the foundations to prayer.

You try to do right and be a good person as an expression of your faith, but hard times come, and it is like being good makes no difference at all. Is it worth the trouble?

"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholds him with his hand." Psalms 37:23-24

This verse is not only a statement of faith it is a promise from God.

STEPS
Steps are common, and by themselves, they are small and only measure two or three feet, but combined together you can go long distances; just as our lives are made of many small choices, but can lead us on to the end.

GOOD MAN
No one can truly claim to be a good man. What makes us bad is sin. If goodness is the absence of sin then no one is good. God considers us good based on our faith in His promise of salvation; we are not good of ourselves. God credits us with the goodness of redemption through our Savor.

ORDERED
Something that is ordered is arranged, laid out, or prepared. When you put something in order you are using logic, purpose, and intent. There is design in our lives as God works out circumstances and events to bring us to a place of greater character and perfection.

BY THE LORD
It is wise to remember that the one who guides our steps is the sovereign. He rules over all the universe as the all-powerful King, and it should comfort us that He is the one guiding our steps.

HE DELIGHTS
Delight is a happiness that is involved and experienced; it is not passive but active, you linger over a delight and enjoy it. God is not some killjoy in Heaven who is looking to make us miserable, but he is watching to see with joy that a man is good so he may delight in him.

IN HIS WAY
God gives mankind free will, and He delights when we live in harmony with His designs for us. God is good and delights in good; when you do good, you are acting in a way that He is pleased with.

NOT UTTERLY CAST DOWN
The most important word in this phrase is the word NOT. There is no finality in this verse. In your darkest hour, you can have hope in His promises that you will not be entirely cast down. You can know that there is a getting up again. This points beyond the testing and trial to a time of getting back up.

UPHOLDS HIM WITH HIS HAND
This poetic phrase is a beautiful picture of the intimate care of our Heavenly Father. The hand that formed mankind out of the dust of the earth is the same hand that was pierced for our transgressions and it is that hand that will hold us up. The hand is the symbol of
     * Strength,
     * Comfort,
     * Power,
     * Creativity,
     * Giving,
     * And touch.

No matter how desperate your trials are there is no better place than being in God's protective hand, count on it, accept it by faith, and rejoice in it.

Role models are people we admire and emulate. The world pressures us to copy someone's likes or values. What do our role models say about us?

"Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God." 3 John 1:11.

This Bible verse uses anyone twice. It is all-inclusive, and we must ask what about me, where do I fit in? Am I from God, or have I not seen him?

IMITATE
To imitate is to copy or reproduce. Children imitate parents, adults imitate teachers. Often we do not realize it, though sometimes it is intentional to learn skills and life lessons.

EVIL
Who would imitate evil? Evil hates God and is hated by God.

There are many ways to define evil.
     * Sin or the results of sin.
     * Rebellion from God.
     * The opposite of good.
God does not do evil, so if you are doing evil, you are doing something God would not do; therefore, you have not seen God.

DO GOOD
God is good, so if you do good, you are doing what God does. Christ went about doing good, and he is an example of one who came from God. (Of course, Christ is much more than an example.)

HAS NOT SEEN GOD
The Bible teaches that no one can see God, but this past tense reference suggests it has happened in the life of one who does good.

There is more than one kind of seeing.
     * You might see something up close or far away.
     * You might see as in understanding an idea.
     * You might see the doctor, meaning an encounter.

We cannot see God's face and live, but we can meet with God and experience Him. This requires faith and time. The Bible calls this being born again and starts a relationship through faith in God and the work of Christ on our behalf.

Our actions show what is inside. Doing good won't bring us to God but are the evidence of the truth within. They show we are imitating God, and He is in our life.
Footnote:
A person who does not believe in God could be from God. God could send a person that is not a believer to be a blessing to you. You may have a lifesaving operation though the doctor may not be a believer; he lives and has skills by God's enabling. We should be open to being blessed by anyone.

ARE THESE THE SIGNS OF THE APOCALYPSE?

The media shows images of wars, murders, natural disasters, collapsing governments, and bankrupt societies. People say these are signs of the Apocalypse but never consider them a sign of the end times.

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

This is The Bible's description of the people in the last days. It is an awful list. But one thing sums them all up.

"HAVING A FORM"

The people of the last days live by their own ideas and philosophies. They reject the Creator's instruction for their own.

A form is a hollow shape inside a mold. It is an empty space, and when a substance is poured in like wax or plaster, it takes the form's shape. A form is an emptiness waiting to be shaped.

We not only want to avoid such people, but we also want to avoid being such people.

"OF GODLINESS"
Godliness can be defined as being like God, living a life He approves of, or imitating God in the way you live.

This world's religions are a form of godliness designed by man, but they cannot succeed in reaching God because man is flawed, and his efforts will be flawed. To say I am good enough for God is based on a lack of knowledge of God. God is holy, so no one is good enough for him, but God is powerful, and in His wisdom, He made a way through Christ (see below).

"BUT DENYING THE POWER THEREOF"

The people of the end times deny the power of God; this is a sweeping and broad statement. It includes:
     * The idea that God is smaller than our problems,
     * That God is helpless or unwilling to do good.
     * That He is old-fashioned or irrelevant to our needs today.
     * That He just set things in motion and walked away.

God's power is seen in Christ's atoning death and resurrection. God is the basis of our relationship with God- not our works, merit, or effort. God is the basis for changing us into better people, not our energies.

"HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH SUCH PEOPLE"
Such practical advice since such people are never good for us. They bring discouragement and problems.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN

There is one person that we should seek to be with. This person is the opposite of the list of character traits described in the verse above and expresses God's power. Jesus lived a perfect life; even his enemies could not find anything wrong in him. His death and resurrection are evidence of the power of God. Though the world is slipping into darkness, his life, teaching, and redemption work can be our personal light. We must get to know him and his power.
