I first came across snippets when it was in very early beta. I had been using Code Collector Pro for a few months and I was far from satisfied. I downloaded it and wanted to move over but didn’t want to redo all my snippets. About a month later when Snippets was around beta .8 (one of the final versions before full release) code collector pro corrupted my entire database and I was sold. I started up snippets and took off. Ever since I can’t even imagine how I lasted without it. One thing that the snippets guys brought up to me is their Import utility which is absolutely amazing. Mainly it gives you the ability to import your snippets from different unfortunately popular snippet collecting applications. If you’ve stored a significant amount of snippets in a different application this is exactly what you need.

What it’s made for

Snippets aims to give you a great way to not only save and store your code but also use it anytime anywhere with ease. Their web site puts it perfectly as

“The main idea is to make the process of reusing as easy as possible to avoid wasting your valuable time to write the same code again.”

Who is the target crowd? In my opinion it’s anyone who uses code, ever. The amount of time this will save you from not only not having to type it again but also from not having to find snippets again somewhere on the internet is invaluable.

The Interface

The interface is the most gorgeous aspect of the entire program. It’s perfectly apple-like so you understand exactly how it works right after you start it up. Snippets comes with a few pre-set up code snippets just to show you how it’s set up and then you’re ready to go.

The left side shows your hierarchy of snippets, all of which are originally stored in the library, and then referenced from the different smart groups and groups that you define. Snippets comes set up with a ton of different language options that you can turn on or off accordingly.
If those languages aren’t enough you can even add your own smart groups to store your weird language snippets how you see fit.

The Menu bar

Although the interface of this application is close to perfect, the beauty of it is it’s presence in the menu bar. Obviously, this is a necessity because no one would ever leave the application open all the time when you can simply paste snippets from there. This is where one of my favorite parts of the applications comes in. The attention to detail when it comes to the menu bar side of snippets is absolutely unbelievable. You have a few options for how to interact with the menu bar icon, first off you can set up keyboard shortcuts that will pull up either the search box or a menu of your created groups and the snippets within them. You can also either click the menu bar icon just to pull up the search box or option-click it to pull up your groups.
From there you have even more options. You can either click or hit enter on a snippet to automatically paste it in the active application, or you can do so while holding option to immediately copy it to the clipboard. For me this partnered with ClipMenu(link) has become invaluable.

Syncing

So what’s a great snippets application without the ability to sync your snippets between your computers? Snippets provides you two great ways to do that. First of you can use MobileMe. This is obviously fantastic if you, like myself, are a MobileMe user who just wants to sync them between multiple computers. But instead lets say you want to sync them between people you are working with. Then you have the second solution, dropbox. Dropbox has been one of my favorite applications for a very long time, with its large following and the ability to sync nearly anything between multiple machines, it’s absolutely amazing. Snippets allows you to store your groups of snippets as “Datastores” on dropbox and therefore after you publish it and share the folder with other users, they can link their groups with it and keep your snippets in sync. You can read more about exactly how this works in the 1.1 release notes on the snippets blog.

Sharing via Scrippets

This feature of Snippets was something I just learned about very recently. Scrippets mainly allow you to “perform a custom set of actions” to a selected group of snippets. One of the bigger uses of this is to send your snippets to websites like pastie.org allowing you to quickly share selected snippets simply and easily.

Textmate

For me Textmate has become my main code editor and even text editor for most of what I do. So naturally I’d like to use it with Snippets for as much as I can. Thankfully I can do that as you can see from the menu bar of Snippets I have the option of editing any snippet directly in Textmate or any other application, mainly that allows you to edit your more intense snippets in dedicated code editing applications. That’s nice and all but that’s not enough for me, but it gets even better as far as Textmate is concerned. There is a fantastic Textmate bundle so you can do even more, this bundle allows you to highlight text in Textmate and then directly make it into a snippet of your own.

Overall

Snippets is one of the very few applications that I literally use daily and can no longer imagine living without. Like it says on their front page, “Stop reinventing the code.” It really just isn’t worth your time. This application has literally made it to the point where I can’t think of a single feature I would like added. This is one of the very few applications I could possibly say that about therefore it gets a:

Wow….just wow….never in a million years would I have expected to read what I just read…A 1600 word essay from Steve Jobs himself explaining IN DETAIL why Apple is supporting flash less and less. You can read the original article here straight from apple.com.

Argument

Steve highlights six main points to explain his reasoning.

1. “Open”

Steve dives into detail about how flash is a completely closed system. He admits that the iOS is proprietary too but explains that flash is completely controlled by Adobe, the definition of closed.

2. Full Web

Since the iDevices stopped fully supporting flash people continuously say that without flash you’re missing out on 95% of web video. That is blatantly not true. He first talks about YouTube since they hold an estimated 40% of web video and come with a handy little application to make it all work, and then he lists these: “Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video.” A very convincing point.

3. Reliability, security and performance.

The trifecta of the computing experience, and something flash has never delivered on any Apple platform. Don’t believe me? Just go here (warning depending on your browser it may crash immediately, thats the point.) Or you can just read this article from TUAW explaining the 16 month old bug…

4. Battery life

I’m glad Steve touched on this because this is something a lot of people don’t understand, and he explains it in detail. Mainly flash video is decoded in software rather than hardware (where H.264 is decoded) which destroys your battery life.

5. Touch

This makes perfect sense. Flash relies heavily on hover events to achieve silly effects, this is obviously not something you could provide on an iDevice, Steve puts it this way “Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers.”

6. The most important reason

Steve debunks the idea that they only reason you can’t develop in flash for the iDevices is political, he explains that it’s because of their spotty performance when transcoded.

Final Thoughts

I think this is a great argument that really may be one of the last nails in the coffin that is flash, something that I am not sad to see go.

It came out and was all the talk for a few days because of it’s very strange approach to writing. No one can deny that it is quite different from almost any application. Granted it has the normal full screen mode used in WriteRoom and Pages but it really separates itself with music. Thats right, directly off the install Ommwriter plays music to you. Everyone immediately said “WOW THATS SUPER CRAZY!!” But its really not….

Think about it. If you like doing a lot of intense work where you try to zone yourself out of distractions to help yourself work what do you go to? Maybe you quit your Twitter client and Facebook, maybe you hide your desktop with Deskshade or Camouflage, and maybe, like me, after you do all that you turn on music. I always try to go for something without vocals just so I don’t get distracted by someone talking. And thats exactly what Ommwriter does.

I do want to mention this application is still in beta, I’m sure many changes will be made before that label is removed.

Loved

The first thing you notice after you start it up is it eats your entire screen.

No questions asked. That is your only option. It starts off with the surreal snow and dormant tree scene giving you two more options with a blank white background and a textured grey(my personal favorite).

Along with that you notice a few other things.

A light tune starts to play and when you start to type if you’re not a loud typist, you hear a subtle clank every time you tap a key. Both of these options are customizable between different tunes and completely off.

Along with sound options you have font options.

Being a font fanatic and typographic enthusiast the majority of the time I open a text editor the first thing I do is change my font. So being given only three choices it’s quite abnormal. You have a single Serif, Sans-Serif and Cursive font, that’s it, and then the option to make the font small medium or large.

Resizing the text box.

In most text editing or document forming applications all you can change is the window size. Depending on the application this can change how the text is laid out. Or if you’re using Word or Pages it can just give you more grey space beside your text. One very cool thing about Ommwriter is that in your giant full screen window, you’re actually typing in a text box. That means it is completely resizable and movable however you so desire.

The last thing that I completely love about Ommwriter is the keen attention to detail.

Not only are their beautiful fade transitions when using ALT + TAB to switch apps and when minimized. But it has a gorgeous custom scroll bar and changes your highlight color to somewhat match the background.

Hated

There are a few things that while using this application I found to be a major nuisance.

First off I am a bad speller.

And while I know exactly what Ommwriter is going for with the not cluttering your writing space with the obnoxious red lines under text, the simple fact is that means one thing. Before whatever I’ve written can go anywhere it has to pass through another text editor just to be spell checked. I would really like to see a hidden option that would just search through the document highlighting errors as when I told it to. I do want to mention it has an interesting autocomplete feature that applies when I tap the escape key hovering over an unfinished word. But in no way does this act as a full feature spell checker.

The cursor.

Everyone is used to the flashing vertical line that determines exactly where the next letter you type is going to land. After using Ommwriter I respect that vertical line. If you’ve been paying very close attention through the last few screen shots the cursor has been changed to a gorgeously minimalistic underscore looking flashing line. And while it looks great it makes it hard to judge exactly where you are typing or deleting.

As you can see thats not exactly what you would normally expect to be deleted. Although that’s something that just takes a few days to get used to it definitely threw me off at first.

Spaces.

This is something that I know wouldn’t affect every user out there, and it’s not really a huge issue it’s just strange. I noticed that I had been using Ommwriter in the first space. I used ALT+ TAB to get out of the application, sent a message in Adium, went down to my second space to check my NetNewsWire, tried to ALT + TAB back to Ommwriter but ALAS! It didn’t switch my space. I had to manually move up to my first space and then ALT + TAB into Ommwriter again! Which just seems like a waste of time.

Compatibility.

Normally when you use some sort of word processor you are planning on getting what ever you are writing out. Ommwriter doesn’t allow you to print. Although this doesn’t surprise me it seems worth it to add, email it, or post it to the web you have to be able to rely on the fact that wherever it goes it will work. This is where the issue appears. By default if you click the interesting save button and just click save it is a new .omm file. Obviously proprietary to Ommwriter. But not all is lost! In the save dialog you also have a single option to save as a .txt file which is obviously as universal as you can get. Yet with no formatting, again which is to be expected. This means along with throwing the text into Pages, Word, or Bean for spell checking you also need to make sure everything is formatted correctly and saved appropriately.

Find and replace.

This almost goes hand in hand with the spell checking functionality but because of my time with the application I decided that it needed the mention. For some reason about half way through typing this up I realized that I had been typing “Omniwriter” instead of “Ommwriter” I was fully aware and have no idea how I got this confused with a non existent product from the Omni group but obviously I needed to fix this. Because Ommwriter doesn’t have the capability to find and replace I had to Cut all the text past it into Smultron just to find and replaced and the move it back into Ommwriter.

Other thoughts

A few other things worth mentioning but not in an entire paragraph:

1. Ommwriter has an awesome looking word counter at the bottom of the page.
2. Textexpander seems to work perfectly inside of it along with cursor placement.
3. The minimize button does not minimize it to your dock it is really more of a hide button.
4. Growl notifications still appear about the Ommwriter window.
5. The normal CMD + S short cut does not work to save the file.
6. Using CMD + O opens whatever file you happen to have selected on the hidden desktop at the time.
7. Global shortcuts work perfectly and automatically hide the window.
8. There is no clunky auto numbering system.
9. There is no crazy awesome menu when right clicking the dock icon.
10. AGAIN this application is still in the glorious beta days so I’m sure improvements will be made.

Verdict

Although this application has a few short comings, I have faith in the developers to improve upon these as needed. Although I’m not exactly sure how to check for updates. But all disadvantages aside the seclusion of writing without being distracted by the blue glow of the Tweetie icon really does inspire you to sit down and just write for as long as you so desire.

I will continue to use Ommwriter on a regular basis and give it a:

Rating 3.5 of 5

Not 24 hours ago I was eagerly awaiting the release of Opera for iPhone, so I was very happy to see Opera publish this press release. About 20 minutes later, the time it took to actually get into the store, it was on my phone. I was personally one of the first people to write a review on iTunes where I gave it 3 of 5 stars, just so it wouldn’t be completely looked over. The browser itself is only a big deal because it is the first non-Webkit browser in the application store. I don’t actually know how much of a feat this is, as in I haven’t heard about any other browsers actually getting denied, but Opera did a great job building up the hype for the release. Not to long ago they released a video showing Opera running on an iPhone 3Gs right beside MobileSafari. Opera absolutely creamed it on EDGE which got a lot of people stirring. Because of Apple’s super closed environment not many people, myself included, expected them to actually accept the application because it obviously “directly duplicates functionality on the device,” which is one of the reasons Apple has to deny your application.

Yet since there was so much hype about Opera coming to the iPhone and it would’ve been very strange for Apple to deny an application that has many very similar counterparts already in the store, they actually accepted it. Whether they did that because of their good will, Opera’s countup timer to see if they would actually approve it, or the fact that it’s UI is so terrible they just felt sorry for them. That’s right I said it, the user interface of Opera is about 10 times worse than that of Opera on my Mac, and that’s saying something. Don’t get me wrong yet, there are a few cool features to Opera Mini that I definitely like, they just don’t out weigh how disgusting it is. Let’s go with the happy stuff first.

Loved

It’s Fast

This fact is indisputable: it is fast. Why? How does it work? It’s quite simple actually, mainly if you say you want to go to GoGoGadgets (shameless plug) their servers grab our site, strip it down cache it and send you a tiny version. Why is that bad? Well it looks funky thats for sure. The way it caches sites makes the text tiny and unreadable, like this.

I don’t know about you but that irks me to no end. First off it totally kills the look of the site, and secondly you can’t read ANYTHING with out zooming in?!? You can even read the title of the article without zooming in on it, which means if you were looking for something of a specific topic you would zoom in, oops thats not it, zoom out, scroll, zoom in, there it is! Which wastes a ridiculous amount of time!

Zooming

This is the first time that I’ve seen this very cool zooming feature. Mainly when you tap to zoom in the back button morphs into a zoom out button so rather than having to tap again to zoom out the back button will do it for you.

Although I think it’s still easier to just tap again to zoom out props for being original Opera, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of this stuff in the future.

Top Sites

One of two flash features of Opera mini is the Safari Top Sites like view.

This is quite nice for getting to places you go often quickly without having to dive into book marks menus.

Tabs

By far my favorite features and the other flashy features of Opera mini is the Tabs. Tabs are something people have wanted in MobileSafari forever, although I don’t get why windows are so bad. But the Opera team really did it with their implementation of tabs.

They made a quick way to open and view multiple tabs that still looks as nice as it can in their terrible interface. Now that I’ve used up all the good features on with the bad.

Hated

The UI

You’ve probably caught me about 3 times completely bashing the UI of Opera, but I’m not doing it because I completely despise them, just hear me out. I think this image from Loren Britcher, the founder of Tweetie, says a lot.

And as he so eloquently put it, “This is pretty self-explanatory: Stop fucking it up.” For Opera this is just the beginning, the just should’ve given up on their red trademark color and made it look nice, not like it was ported from a Blackberry. Oh no, it doesn’t end there, besides the fact that they wouldn’t use the nice Apple interface elements that make applications look oh so pretty, a lot of stuff they did just doesn’t make sense. Like their menu navigation.

Normally you dive into a menu and to go back you press the button on the left with the triangle shaped side. Oh look at that, it’s on the RIGHT SIDE, all I have to say about that is what the heck were they thinking. That just doesn’t make sense, it’s like not a single one of their designers, if they even have any, have ever touched an iPhone or even a mac for that matter.

“Fullscreen mode”

I could’ve packed this under UI and it would’ve made sense but I figured I’d give it a section because of the demand for a fullscreen browser on the iPhone. I spent a while using VanillaSurf, a browser with a stellar fullscreen mode, and it was very hard to move back to MobileSafari just because I lost that feature. Opera’s “Fullscreen mode” is an absolute piece of crap.

As you can see its not really fullscreen. Yes the top bar goes away when you scroll down but because of the giant buttons in the bottom left and right there might as well just be the normal bar there.

Roundup

The one single reason that I can think of for actually using Opera is if you have a limited data plan because by going through its server first it’ll save you a little bit of data. So there are already tons of reviews about Opera mini out there, why bring it up? Because what happened was very interesting. About 24 hours after its release it already has over 10,000 reviews in the app store (granted they’re definitely not all good). Imagine if Fennec (Firefox’s mobile browser) made its way on to the iPhone, the world would explode! They hype for this application was absolutely amazing, Opera did a great job promoting an application that I believe to be absolutely terrible. It really does feel like it was ported directly from Windows Mobile or a Blackberry, you can obviously tell their developers have no Apple experience. Even though it’s this bad, I was blown away when I saw this…bare with me for the scrolling. What is this exactly? These are pictures I TOOK less than an hour ago of the top free applications in all the different countries store’s. So mainly Opera was the top in ALL the stores and has been for about 5 hours. Well isn’t that interesting Steve Jobs! PEOPLE DO LIKE A CHOICE! WHO WOULD’VE THUNK IT??

Well the iPad bug bit me. I was very excited when I first saw Steve Jobs unveil the iPad back in January. I couldn’t wait to try it out. A few months passed and April 3rd finally arrived. I went to my local Best Buy to check out the iPad and was initially less than impressed. I spent some time with the device and after three hours I left with every bit of the money I planned to spend still in my checking account.

A few days passed and I came home to my roommate telling me that it was time. Trey told me that if I bought an iPad then so would he. I thought about it for a second and realized that I hadn’t stopped reading articles on the iPad since the week previous. I tossed the idea around all the while making Trey promise that he too would buy one if we went that night. Peer pressure, indeed. I read nothing but good things about the device. I felt like I certainly didn’t need it, but I did want to have the latest and greatest from Cupertino’s labs. So we did it.

An hour later we were back with our 16GB iPads just in time for Chuck on NBC. I waited, the full hour, for Chuck to end so that I wouldn’t miss either the episode or the unboxing (in all it’s glory) of the iPad. Soon it was loaded with a few playlists, some photos, my Safari bookmarks, Address Book and iCal and that’s about it. I saw no reason to add any of my existing iPhone apps just yet since they really looked terrible on Best Buy’s demo iPad.

Now I currently own two Apple laptops, an iPhone, and an iPod. I had absolutely no reason to snag an iPad but after using it without the distractions present in the store that day, I must say that I love it. Browsing the Web has never been so intimate. It is as if I’m holding this month’s edition of Whatever Web Page I’m On magazine. My four year old MacBook may very well become my “new” HTPC as I resolve to travelling only with the iPad now as my newer MacBook Pro rarely leaves the multitude of cables/wires that stay connected to it.

As more and more app developers show the iPad’s promise, I’ll continue to enjoy it as my current go to gadget for everything Web site related (save Flash, I know). It is just easy and convenient and comfortable to use…so much so that it doesn’t even feel like I’m using anything. All righty, enough with the blind Apple love. I’ll end this bit with the same old song and dance that everyone else out there obsessed with the iPad recites: To claim this new device as an oversized iPod Touch is silly. The added screen real estate and power from the A4 chip really changes the game. Welcome iPad. I am glad you are here.

Well I just have to say that I am most impressed with Apple’s current lineup of hardware. Their iPods are more sophisticated than ever. The iPhone is ruling the roost in the mobile space these days. The iPad made quite a splash when it launched and is still going strong. Apple’s iMac continues to sell well while simultaneously eating away at the need for it’s more costly bigger brother, the Mac Pro desktop. And finally we have the well-loved and highly respected Macbook Pro family. Apple’s newest laptops, released today, are simply stronger than ever.

While I immediately questioned Apple’s reluctance to add Intel’s latest i5 series processors, it will all come out in the wash I’m sure. In my mind the people that purchase Apple’s entry level Macbook Pro are not going to be too discouraged by the somewhat stale Core 2 Duo. I feel that the longer battery life will be more appealing to said customers. Power users are still going to opt for the “sweet spot” 15″ Macbook Pro or even the “way too big” 17″. That said, these new laptops are a welcome addition to the hardware family.

I am loving that there is now an option to add a 512GB SSD, however the price leaves a lot to be desired. I find it silly that 500GB is the largest HDD that Apple allows in their CTO option. Still though, with the low cost of storage these days, it’s not really a big deal anymore.

All in all these new laptops are a nice compliment to Apple’s current hardware lineup. I can’t say I was really surprised or blown away by the upgrades. Today’s announcements seemed like a very natural progression in the way of things. While I certainly won’t be going out of my way to replace my late ’08 Macbook Pro 15″, I wouldn’t hesitate to plop down the cash for one of the new 15″, or even 13″, Macbook Pros.

I can tell you right now I’m not happy about this article and I think very few people are. If you read my last article you know that Twitter bought Tweetie branding them as their favorite application. They are changing the name to “Twitter for iPhone.” Why are they taking the happy name “Tweetie” that Loren said wasn’t as scary as “Twittelator” the Arnold Schwarzenegger of iPhone Twitter clients. You don’t think he said this? Check out this video of him speaking for the Stanford iPhone application development class (iTunes Link). Twitter decided to switch the name for one reason SEO. I’m not sure if SEO is what you would call it for the application store but that’s why. Uniformed people go to the store and type “Twitter” in which case Echofon comes up first and Tweetie 2 is about 15th, yet Tweetie is arguably the best Twitter client on the iPhone (ignore Tweetdeck it’s a different story).

So why is everyone angry about this? They have a good reason to be, a good many reasons. First of which this is discouraging development of other applications (like Nambu), since Twitter branded themselves its very hard to compete with the initial creator of the entire system.

Tapbots

This hit me right in the face when I read a brand new post from Tapbots today. Tapbots are the fantastic developers behind some amazing applications WeightBot, an application for tracking your weight Convertbot, an awesome conversion application with a one of a kind UI and Pastebot, reviewed by MacLife with the title “Pastebot Will Change Your Life.”

In the same presentation mentioned before Loren talked about how his UI for Tweetie, using Apple design elements, was ideal for users since they already know how the controls work. He then said the only company that can get away with changing that and still come out on top is Tapbots, which is very true. Everyone of their application interfaces is created completely from scratch and looks nothing like the normal Apple designed applications but they are still perfectly function and intuitive. Their article “Say Hello to Tweetbot” made me want to break down in tears. To sum it up they announced that the application they have been working on for about the last 2 months was, you guessed it, a Twitter client.

This presents problems not only for Tapbots but for every developer working on, or maintaining a Twitter application. First off it will be very hard to charge for you application anymore. Tweetie was previously $2.99, not a bad price for such a great application, but more than free nonetheless. Now that Twitter bought it, besides just changing its name, they are releasing it in the App Store for free. Developers can say good bye to much of their profits from Twitter applications. Not only will “Twitter for iPhone” be the first application in almost all searches its arguably the best application in the store now. Tapbots put it this way “We probably won’t be able to charge for the app anymore. Who’s going to pay for a Twitter client when “Tweetie” is free?” Which was a little bit better than how John Gruber put it “…And there’s going to be some heavy drinking tonight from developers of other iPhone OS Twitter API clients.”

Everyone has a reason to be angry. Twitter had no reason to need to take over Tweetie, at least none that we can see at the moment (unless its for mobile advertising). Besides to try and get more people using Twitter because of a sexy iPhone application. If that’s all they need then they sell out easily…

Technicalities

Getting to more of the technical side of things, many people have been asking some unanswerable questions. Like will the new versions of Tweetie get preferential service because it’s directly developed by Twitter? Tapbots asks 4 major questions that seem to be the biggest overall.

1. Will the official Twitter client gain access to private APIs that others can’t access? There has been a lot of crap about Apple’s ‘AdLib‘ Framework that was used to build the iPad user guide that acts exactly like a native application yet it is unusable by other web developers who would love to have the awesome interface for their web apps. Along with Apple using other controls like the brightness control in iBooks that developers cannot access which makes other E-Book readers insufficient comparatively.

2. Will it get a higher query limit? Will Tweetie be able to call the API more times than the rest of the applications just because of its direct integration with Twitter.

3. Will it be the only client to have true push notification? This coincides with the first question about private APIs. If Twitter allowed direct access to the ‘Fire hose’ or direct flow of tweets from Twitter rather than having to call the API, Tweetie would immediately become the most function Twitter application around with true push notification abilities.

4. Will they eventually kill all 3rd party iPhone/iPad clients to prevent confusion between their app and all the rest? If Twitter integrates advertising into the new flavor of Tweetie this could actually be possible. Twitter could cut off the API all together and maintain a closed environment very close to what Apple does with the application store. This way everyone would receive the same experience using Twitter and they could rake in all the advertising money they so desired. Finally a way to monetize Twitter…Yay…

Roundup

Tapbots did finish their post on a happy note, this made them more anxious to finish their application and get it on the market. I for one will be switching over for a few reasons. First off I know it will be awesome, because all their other applications are, and I am planning to boycott Tweetie as soon as it becomes “Twitter for iPhone.” I’m very opposed to what they are doing and think that it really is the big man bullying the smaller developers who should get the credit for making Twitter what it is today.

My task manager of choice on my Mac, iPhone and future iPad is Things by Cultured Code. I don’t think their applications even need reviews, but I’ll go over them nonetheless.

Mac

From the first time you open the mac application you will be sold. Its perfect interface is all you need to see before you know its exactly what you need.

As you can see from the amazingly well done screen shots on the mac portion of their site the UI is perfect and functional with perfect hot keys and organization that isn’t too complicated to wrap your head around. Spend 15 minutes with it, I can almost guarantee you’ll be sold.

iPhone

Although they are still in the process of implementing a great over the air sync feature, as you can tell from their amazing status page, is still flying at “Full Speed.” That is the only possible feature that I could as for that I don’t have. Two days after using the mac app I was sold on the $10 iPhone app(iTunes Link) and it was worth the money. Wireless sync isn’t too much to deal with and its fantastic to have everything I need and want to do in my pocket.I was planning on taking all these screenshots with my copies of everything but their website has such great shots and explanations that it just wasn’t worth it.

iPad

After the first two amazing releases I thought they could wow me no more. Then when people starting flaunting their iPad mockups there it was. The most gorgeous application I’ve seen to date, the beautiful UI is just a start, not only is it gorgeous it’s amazingly functional.

Why?

So why the completely unrelated title? Why wasn’t this called “Things: an amazing ecosystem.” Although that title isn’t bad, it’s because of their recent iPad demo video. On the front page of the iPad portion of their site they have a video that I’ve probably watched at least 20 times. Every single time it grows on me more and more. Pause right now and spend 30 seconds to watch it…………………………………..Amazing right? Their video looks like something right out of Cupertino. The minimalistic background and feel is just like an iPhone or iPad commercial. They manage to show how amazing the application is quickly enough that they never lose your attention. Not to mention the perfect choice of music in the background. A trademark Apple commercial.

So they look like Apple, who cares? That’s what every developer tries to give their applications and websites an “Apple feel,” so why is Cultured Code different? Because Apple sucks at task management. They’ve tried and tried again but they’ve never done it well, not even close. Until iPhone 4.0 you couldn’t even sync notes wirelessly via MobileMe, the HUNDRED dollar service they offer to sync your data. Just a few months before that they just started letting you sync it with a wire. Before that they hardly even had task management. I’m sorry random to dos sitting in my Mail.app inbox or on the side of my iCal is no way to work with task management. Even someone completely oblivious of the GTD system by David Allen need way more than Apple offers. A task list is something that everyone needs but they don’t immediately think about. By acquiring Cultured Code Apple could integrate all of these applications right on to their hardware making an amazing experience for everyone.

Please hear me Apple! Everyone go out and get all three of their applications here! They’re worth every penny.
