Prenova announces the results of a survey revealing that large retail operations are choosing to decrease energy consumption because they see significant quarterly savings as a result. Performed in conjunction with Chain Store Age the results of the survey are unequivocal. 50 percent of retailers with 500 to 999 stores, and over 60 percent of retailers with 1,000 stores or more, indicated that sustainable energy initiatives help them save money on energy every quarter. Complete survey results and analysis are available on Prenova’s website.

The growth in popularity of sustainable products—those that are eco-friendly, organic and those produced through fair trade methods—has marched upward for at least the past five years as more shoppers factor in the environmental impact of the products they consume. According to the latest IRI Times & Trends Report, “Sustainability: CPG Marketing in a Green World,” the spectrum of green shoppers is broad and represents a diverse array of consumer demographics, psychographics, values and beliefs. The IRI report examines eight green consumer segments and provides insight into current and emerging sustainability trends that will enable manufacturers and retailers to drive top-line growth in the rapidly evolving green segment of the consumer packaged goods market.

According to the U.S. Commerce Department, which manages the government's digital TV coupon program, the Zenith DTT901 converter box consumes less energy in "on mode" than any other converter eligible for the $40 federal government discount coupons. The Zenith DTT901 also performs better than the guidelines of the Energy Star program, which stipulates conservative energy use in both the "on mode," when the box is in use, and in the "sleep mode," when the converter box is not in use.

New research conducted by EnviroMedia Social Marketing indicates young Americans, an estimated audience of 76 million people, will power the new green economy and are the key to future economic growth.

This national opinion poll reveals a clear generation gap in understanding the cause of climate change — and marketing experts say businesses that pay attention may find new growth strategies.

More than any other age group, 18- to 34-year-olds believe global warming is caused by human activities. Additionally, the research indicates Americans who believe in this connection are almost twice as likely to buy more green products in this economy than Americans who believe it occurs naturally.

With the world’s servers currently consuming some 408 MWh of electricity, the effort is certainly needed. In fact it has been under way for some time in some of the United States’ large data centers.

UPS has deployed 300 new delivery trucks powered by Compressed Natural Gas to seven cities in Colorado, Georgia, Oklahoma and California. The CNG vehicles, part of an order placed last May, will allow UPS to further reduce its dependence on traditional fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel and lower its carbon footprint. UPS already operates the largest private fleet of alternative fuel vehicles in its industry – 1,819 in total with these additions.

The new CNG trucks have been deployed over the past month to Denver (43); Atlanta (46); Oklahoma City (100), and four cities in California: Sacramento (21), San Ramon (63), Los Angeles (9) and Ontario (18). All now are in service.

President Obama's first speech to a Joint Session of Congress last night was almost entirely devoted to the troubled economy. Amid a deepening recession Obama described the $787 Billion stimulus as one of the bold steps his five week old administration is implementing to turn the US economy around.

In the speech, Obama vowed to spend $15 billion a year to develop renewable energy. "We know the country that harnesses the power of clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century," he said. The administration's Secretary of Energy, Stephen Chu, announced on Monday an immediate fast-tracking of all applications from wind and solar companies for stimulus dollars to kick-start the construction of more projects.

Teleworking or running a home-based business can save money and help the environment by decreasing carbon emissions from commuting. ComEd recommends several tips for customers to save more money and make a bigger impact on the environment by better managing energy usage in their home offices.

Teleworking is well on its way to becoming a mainstay in today's work environment. According to the U.S. Labor Department, about 14 million workers were telecommuting part-time in 2004 and 7 million were running home-based businesses. Employed Americans working remotely at least one day a month increased by 63 percent from 2004 to 2006, according to a survey by WorldAtWork*. The Society of Human Resource Management's 2007 benefits survey showed that 56 percent of U.S. companies surveyed offered some form of telecommuting in 2007, up 5 percent from 2006.
